Beware!!!! Dont send your uni to shakal007 for ram upgrade!!! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Here's how the story goes:
I bought a brand new MDA Pro a few months ago. I tried to use it as a satnav with iGO but of course that was not possible because the 64mb RAM of the device was not enough. So I decided to upgrade to 128 mb of RAM and I started searching here in xda-developers. I read the section of the Wiki about upgrading and also I found a couple of threads. Well I found out that the best option for me was to send my device to a guy called SHAKAL007 who is located in Czech Repuplic which is the nearest to Greece where I live.
His name was in the wiki's list about the shops around the world that can do the RAM upgrade. I contacted him via email and he replied me immediately to all my questions after a few minutes (very suprising!). He told me that he would need a couple of days to finish the upgrade (software and hardware part) and that he wants 74 Euros for the upgrade and the chips including the P&P fees to send the pda back to me. I found the price very reasonable and agreed to pay him via Paypal immediately as he asked me and the next day I posted my precious device via registered mail.(How stupid I was that I paid extra money for registered post).
After a few days he told me that he received the device and as soon as possible he would do the upgrade and he would send me my pda back to me. I waited a few days but no news from SHAKAL007. I sent him another email asking him if he has finished the upgrade. A few days later he responded to my emails (in the meanwhile I had sent him a few more emails) and he told me that the hardware part of the upgrade has finished but he had a few “software” problems that he finally succeeded to solve and that he would send the pda back to me. That was all.
Please notice that the pda was sent to him on the 26th of November and after more than a whole month I have sent him tons of emails but get no response. In the beginning he claimed that he drives a truck and cannot be online because he is not home. Well I think that is a kind of trick so we dont bother him. That's all RUBBISH!!! I know that he logins in xda-developers all the time. And when I see he's online in xda-developers, I send him emails in his personal email address and of course I get no response but he is just keeping ignoring me.
Hey guys who is this SHAKAL007? As I can see he has only 4 posts since 2006 he became a member of our very helpful to everybody community and all of them are related to the upgrade. The posts are about advertising his business. So in my opinion, this guy has not offered anything to this community but he just uses it to make money and steal other people's devices. I dont know why but perhaps he sells them to Ebay(?). The most funny (or tragical) was that when I was sending all these emails and he was ignoring me I was sending him private messages here in xda-developers as theseas asking him about info on the upgrade. Of course he didnt know that "theseas" is the guy from Greece that has sent him his uni. So the same time that he was ignoring my emails, the same time he was answering me to all my (fake of course) questions here in xda-developers through private messages. Then I was started to think that SHAKAL007 is a SCAMMER because he was still looking for other victims to steal their devices, to do them what? Sell them to Ebay and make money?
I was the best customer and paid him promptly the same day via Paypal. Well SHAKAL007 is not only a SCAMMER but IMPUDENT because he asked me to pay him 74 Euros just to steal my device!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course I know that the mistake is mine and that I am responsible for that but I saw his ****ing name in the wiki. I thought he is confirmed. Who wrote his name in the wiki list, I suppose that he did it for himself.
Perhaps I am wrong but I feel that I had to open this thread just to share my bad experience with you and help you not to loose your pda and your money because as I told you he asks money too!!!!
Perhaps I am wrong but I told you exactly what has happened to me until now and all that I know and have seen about Him until now.
IF I AM WRONG AND WILL EVER RECEIVE MY DEVICE UPGRADED AND IN FULL WORKING ORDER THEN I WILL EDIT THIS POST AND APOLOGISE TO SHAKAL007. I THINK THIS IS FAIR FOR ME AND FOR HIM.
BUT FOR NOW MY ADVICE IS NOT SEND YOUR PRECIOUS UNIVERSAL TO THIS SCAMMER!!!!!!!
MOD EDIT: Removed real life names, see my post below.

this post is reserved for me and I will edit it to apologise to SHAKAL007 if I ever receive my device upgraded and in full working order.

That is very sad hearing about your device. Why dont you approch the Paypal customer support to file a fraud ? Paypal will have their local branches of the service provider to take a legal action. Try to include Paypal in this case as soon as possible. I think he should be banned from our beloved community if found guity.

Well as I can see right now SHAKAL007 signed in in xda-developers today and his last activity here was at 6:44 AM. Of course he has seen the thread because I have posted a visitor's message in his user profile but still no response even after opening a whole thread about him. Also still no response to my emails.

Dealt with Paypal after someone on these forums took my money and admitted he 'forgot' to send the Universal to me. I asked for my money to be returned to me, but he stopped contact and kept my money. Well, Paypal investigated, concluded in my favor and recovered.... USD 0.77 out of USD$150 I paid. And that was the end of it.

Thanx for your support. As you can see this SCAMMER doesn't ignore only me but ALL OF US who are honest and genuine members of this community. I suppose that he thinks that we ALL are stupid because after a whole thread that I have opened he keeps on ignoring us. As I told you maybe I am mistaken and I am wrong while accusing him. Why he doesnt post a reply just to protect himself and his business he has setup in our beloved forum?
PLEASE CHECK HIS USER PROFILE AND NOTICE THAT HE LOGGED IN TODAY and his last activity was at 6:44 AM.
His user profile: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=276576&vmid=8281

Diamond owner here, but couldn't help but notice this thread as I was scrolling down. This is his supposed address taken from the guest comments in his user profile. The road doesn't seem to match up with the area he mentioned:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&h....077646&spn=0.003338,0.010514&z=17&iwloc=addr
Maybe someone can find his IP address and 'pay' him a visit?
EDIT: Just noticed the following. But street number doesn't match up with the provided address.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&h....081852&spn=0.053364,0.168228&z=13&iwloc=addr
EDIT2: To get the second result, just type 'vitezna' in Google Maps. Something's fishy. I don't understand the address standard of Czech Reublic so maybe a Czech guy can make sense of it.

Waow that sounded really strange. well i guess admins and mods should beaware of his ip incase he fleds his account and goes under another new account here at xda.. i hope you guys will manage to solve this mystery and i hope justice will be brought forward..

AS much as I sympathise with this situation we cannot allow sensitive info such as that posted to be on our forum. There isnt any evidence which shows beyond a doubt that this guy is a scammer, suggest further action is taken along the correct routes.
The info has been removed so xda-developers.com is not in any silly legal situations later on due to this thread. I trust members will comply with this small request?
Has anybody contacted the website host, ISP of the whois entry etc...??

as i have already told to all of the guys here i thank them for their support. perhaps mrvanx's opinion to remove personal and sensitive info is correct but i dont think that it matters because all this information is in the section of the wiki about htc uni ram upgrade. this info has been provided by the xda member that has my device right now exactly for this reason: to be able to approach him so we can upgrade our devices. also you can find this info in his personal site which is dedicated to the upgrade. the link of this site is also in the wiki.

I also agree with mrvanx that we are not sure if this guy is a scammer. I have said it in my first post but until now from all i now and from all that has happened to me by him this guy is a scammer and for me he will be a scammer until the opposite will be proved. And the opposite for me is to get back my device upgraded and in full working order.

Hi all, sorry to hear the bad news, but jus my bit... Mods, wold it not be safe to "remove" shakals007´s name from the upgraders list in the wiki???
Again, just my bit, don´t mean to annoy anyone...
All the best and good luck in getting your device back...
Willy

Here are the steps you need to take if you paid by PayPal.
1. File a dispute claim with PayPal (You are allowed to do this for 45 days from the payment. After 45 days you are out of luck).
2. Go to the open dispute claim and then escalate the claim for PayPal review (You can escalate it any time after filling a dispute claim. The maximum time allowed is 20 days, after that you are out of luck).
3. He has to respond to PayPal. Describe your situation in the PayPal claim.
4. Either he has to ship the item to you with tracking number or you will get your money refunded.
Hope this is helpful!
KOR!

He will receive 74 euro refund and than what? Paypal will not cover the money that hasnt been sent through it...
My advice to theseas, try to go to your police station and report stolen phone to them with IMEI number of your uni if you have a box or a phone store bill... They have the authotiries to forward your request to the police in any EU country. It's a long shot but you never know...
I lost my uni last summer. I set on my scooter, put uni in front pocket and when I arrived to the destination uni was gone Real stupid, and tomake things worse i diddnt have the box with IMEI number so th police could find it easily in my country...

I have already filed a claim through Paypal but I also agree with Duke Nukem that Paypal isnt gonna give me my uni back but Paypal is just the first step. Have also sent again an email to SHAKAL007 and I hope to get a response this time. I am sure that he follows this thread, at least at weekend if he really works as a driver and is at home only at weekend as he has told me but this time he is not stupid to login with his user name. Perhaps I shouldnt have written that I know when he logins in xda-developers by watching his user profile. Now he knows and he wont use his account to login.

Thank god! Man you finally spoke to me! You answered to my last email that I sent you yesterday and you finally posted here to protect yourself. The only problem is that at least me I dont understand what you want to say because obviously you have used an automated translator. If it is possible rewrite this post using simple english like mine or ask a friend of yours that speaks english to help you. If anybody understands please help me guys.
Well I have said in this forum that I didnt like accusing you but tell me what you would do man if you had sent your pda and your money to someone that doesnt respond to your emails for a whole month. It's quite simple what you would think of him. As I can understand from your automate translated english you say that you were not online. No man you were online here quite often (I am not fool and nobody here is) and as I have said everytime I knew that you were online here in xda-developers I was sending you emails and you were ignoring me. Even the time that I opened this thread you logged in and of course you saw everything but even then you didnt say anything. Everybody knows that you were online that time. If you really had problems why you didnt tell me? Why you didnt tell me when I was almost begging you for an answer to my emails. I was begging you because I didnt want to open this thread. I am not sure that I would get an answer from you or my device (I havent received it yet) if i hadnt opened this thread. Well I dont have to dispute with you about anything, I dont really care anymore. The only thing that matters for me is to receive my device. And I am waiting for facts because I am tired of words. Words are for free, dont cost anything.

I suppose here you mean that you apologise because you were NOT able to send the pda back to me earlier. Because 17th of January is quite late, it has been almost 2 months.

@SHAKAL007: you might just have cleaned your name Hope all goes well and theseas get's back his phone, he really have been concerned. I retreat my words and accusations. Due to your business i hope you could be more answerable when you get questions and find sometime to explain deadlines you will hold. that would make the customer more peacefull
well i do not understand your english fully by what you wrote on this thread but i believe you used a form of language translator on the internet..

many days have passed now .
what was the overall outcome ?
was he a tea leaf or just a bad businessman

I'm glad that it finished

Is the device OK? Is there 128mb?

Voided Warranty and now need a repair - Yorkshire

Hi there, I have been a member for a while now but never posted before!
I have followed many of the hints, tips and suggestions on this forum and have had a great time with my O2 XDA mini s but now find myself needing more help !
In fixing my mini s stylus issue I voided the warranty. A couple of weeks ago a colleague managed to knock a screwdriver into the empty battery compartment. I was swapping the sim card but got called away. The screwdriver pierced the sticker giving the IMEI number and damaged the electrical component under it. The component is labelled 3R3.
After calming down and restarting the mini s, all was ok apart from the backlight which would not work at all. I took my phone to a local phone repair shop who had it for a week then said they could not fix it as it needs a new mainboard - typical !
I have spoken with O2 who will charge me £17.50 to send my phone off to a company called A Novo who (I was told) will then send it back unrepaired as the warranty is voided. Totally pointless.
Does anyone know where I might be able to get my mini s repaired or has anyone got a broken mini s with a good mainboard they are willing to sell me ?
thanks
If you send it to Anovo they can quote you for a non warranty repair, this way you will know whether its worth while paying for the repair. BTW Anove are based in Norwich. I believe there is a link form the o2 xda web site that has a contact number.
Hope that helps
LB
LB,
thanks for the reply.
I have had a hunt through the o2 XDA site but cannot seem to find any reference to Anove. I have even googled them and not found anything like.

Has anyone else used them? If so what are they like ?
Cheers
These people seem ok.
I did not actually need to use them in the end so I can't tell you what they are like, but give them a try.
They are authorised repairers for HTC models.
If you contact them and explain the fault, they will give you a quote before they carry out the work.

If nothing works out for you, I've got a almost like new main board lying right here on my desk! I purchased a damaged wizard to grab a part out of it i needed for mine but the main board is still in perfect shape. I could sell it to you with or without the camera, your choice. PM me if interested.

Apex laptops are overpriced and most definatley NOT HTC authorised - most of their 'parts' come salvaged from broken units. Check their website. Then go elsewhere...!

Depending on where you are in Yorkshire, you could take your device to Bulmers second hand shop in York on a wednesday or saturday and ask for 'Dave' - big guy with glasses. He does board level repairs on xda's but is usually quite busy.

Apex laptops do not use parts from broken pda's. They come direct from factory. I bought a new XDA II case and it is perfect!
i would highly recomend them.
they are not overpriced either. they say if you find a price cheaper elsewhere they will beat that!

Ok, then why do they have Qtek 2020 boards listed - if they came direct from HTC they would have no reseller rom flashed to them. Trust me, I know. They alos charge £295 for this board! MORE THAN A COMPLETE DEVICE.
They also list the housing at £25 and the front bezel at £30, battery cover at £15 and aeriel cover at £15 = £85.
I sell the complete housings on ebay for the himalayas / alpine for £25....and they are the entire housing inc the battery cover!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130015502288
So you don't think that much of a massive markup is overpricing? £85 from them or £25 from me. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm............
So, I state again, they are OVERPRICED.

Hi folks,
Allow me to intoduce myself.
I am the Service Manager for a UK based laptop and PDA repair company, Apex Laptops. With regards to the PDA repair side of our company, we specialise in mainly iPAQ PDA's but are finding a large number of people wanting HTC repairs.
We have tried many sources to obtain parts, the most unhelpful being 02's actual XDA repair center, ANOVA.
We are trying to find a company or people who would like to give / sell their broken / unwanted HTC's to us. Working or not, we do not mind.
If you know or have any information which may be of use to us, we will certainly be most grateful.
Thanks for your time and hopefully look forward to speaking to you soon.

So the 'highly recommended' in the above posts for apexlaptops - comes from APEXLAPTOPS. And they want to buy up your broken PDA's for parts.....

I tried Apex Laptops with no success. I emailed them with the details and received an email back saying someone would be in touch soon. Several days later I received another email asking for a little more detail. I sent the reply and have heard nothing since. I even emailed them with prompt for my estimate! Just nothing from them.
On the other hand, fluffcat1 and Dave in York have been more than helpful. I can recommend them both

Dave says it's all working now as well - I've dropped the rear casing bits off today - was trying for last sat but was busy, sorry, my fault.
Bet he's a lot cheaper than Apex 'we need to replace the entire mainboard' laptops as well  who incidently have deleted the thread I quoted from above but not the other posts they previously made - go on, have a search!...

LMAO!
Obviously making no comment about a specific company here, but as a general statment...
Should a person, say, a Service Mananger, for a company visit a forum, not disclose that they work for said company, while making comments about them, you would think "hey, that's immoral". You could well be right.
Should that person LIE about the company, say for example, making a false claim that they are a customer of said company and give glowing FALSE praise, you'd probably be inclined to wonder about just what kind of a business it is. You'd be right to think that. That hypothetical situation would be incredibly shady, outright immoral, and quite possibly an illegal business practise.
A little flag should also be waving in your head saying "hey why does this hypothetical person need to pretend to be a satisfied customer? surely if they are an honest and trustworthy company they will have actual satisfied customers, and have no need to lie and decieve."
Shold said manager at the company in one thread be calling for people to send them broken phone parts for use as spare parts, yet in another vigourously (while lying and pretending to be a customer!!!) deny that they use parts from broken phones... you'd just be thinking "WTF! Why aren't these people being invesigated by the local coppers?" That'd be a fair question.
In this hypothetical situation, I would advise people to seek the advice of the local trading standards or police, to determin the legality and correctness of this deciet.
Of couse, as I've stated, this is all hypothetical and unrelated to this thread. No idea why I've posted it here, sorry. We have NO such immoral persons falsely claiming to be satisfied customers.
I apologige profusely for this post that is unrelated to the thread and the posted comments within.
b19dmj, does your part looks like attached? Part size is about 3*3 mm.
Hi, yes it looks like that but has 3R3 stamped on it.
I would just like to thank everybody on the forum who posted info to help me.
I am happy to report my Mini s is now back in my clumsy paws and is as good as new! - Special thanks to Dave - the Phone man at Bulmers in York (a real hero !) and to Fluffcat1 who pointed me in the right direction and helped out with any parts needed. I recommend both these gents.

Warning HTCCODE website, forum user FerrariPassion

**UPDATE , I DID GET THE CODE HOWEVER I WOULD TAKE TIME TO READ THIS THREAD BEFORE USING THESE GUYS**
These are the guys that claim on their website....
Unlock any HTC phone locked to any network worldwide instantly!
# Full money back guarantee if we fail at our end.
A word of warning on these guys , they take your money and then when they cannot provide a code your phone they make a few excuses and then stop responding to PM's or emails , the user on this forum is ferraripassion and the website is htccode.com they also use totalgsm software. Here is another site they operate under http://www.simunlock-htchero.com/buy.html
My phone is locked to the three network in the UK and the IMEI number is not in their database.
I am sure when everything runs smoothly they are fine , however the judge of a good company is when something goes wrong !!
They are based in Banaglore according to whois , might pay them a visit as I am over there next week
Anyway would be great if you could make this a sticky so that other people at least deal with these guys with their eyes open.
I will update this thread if they either refund my money or if they provide the unlock code both are promises that they made on the website.
Mark
I fully agree that they are not very hot on communication, but I don't think they're fraudulent. I got my code from them a while ago, but it did take a week or so and communication was very poor.
Regards.
Dave
Well i am at two weeks and waiting ....
Mark
and let me just say this, I emailed another site THIS MORNING asking for unlock with this phone, and guess what !!! its the same people. See below for what they say when i ask if they can unlock phone, they dont realise its the same person... inbetween time they have ignored my emails and PM's about the original purchase.
Can you unlock this phone HTC Hero , locked to Three UK
IMEI number below.

Yes, you have to purchase the code on www.htccode.com

i've had the same experience, code not in their database. Please wait 3-4 days and PM Ferrari person again. So i did, but no reply.
did you ever get an unlock solution ?
not as of yet, i bought the code a week ago thursday
i used htccode, the client generated the unlock key almost instantly. I found that it didnt work in the end and got a refund. But i found out my Orange UK Hero had the new ROM which used orange's own unlock algorithm. All i did was downgrade it and flash it with MoDaCo's custom rom and the key worked fine.

Hi
Your code has been sent.
code recieved and works
Another one here !!!
I'm in the same position, no code, no money.....
I don't know what happened, but is very sad to me to waste my money for nothing....
Greetings
i got the code late last night and it works for htc on THREE , seems this thread hurried them along.
Mark
tried to get my code earlier but said my IMEI wasn't recognised. Emailled ferrari passion off here and sent the crap through they need via that gsm server.
I will add however it is an incredibly poor show that they take money for a service they don't even know for certain they can give i.e whether or not they can unlock your phone, and can only clarify this once they have your money.
I'm sure the word "fraud" fits in there somewhere...from wiki "In the broadest sense, a fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain ..."
they do not offer any explanation to the delays which is the annoying bit.
In the end I did get my code so they can do it when pushed .... I just think they fail to communicate when things do not go to plan.
In my case it was three weeks of it will be tomorrow or no replies ... I post this thread and raise a pay-pal dispute and it is solved within one day.
At least this thread will let people see what kind of service they offer and then they can make their own mind if they want to spend the money.
Mark
Yes i hear you mate, well we'll see, at the end of the day its £14 so i was prepared to take the risk. I'm also a pain in the arse when it comes to getting ripped off so i'm sure i'll get somewhere. It clearly says on their website that they can unlock htc heroes on orange, they take £14 off me then say they can't....hmmm
Like I have said before. Phones are being manufactured everyday and Orange etc.. rolls them out in batches.
It is impossible to update the database everyday with so many IMEI's.
So this happens monthly or once in 2 weeks.
@mark
I did tell you that I will email you once the code has been obtained and that has been done.
Now the main database has been updated with 2 million records, so there should be no problem with the automated system.
@crazy email me your IMEI no, will have a look.
And am 100% no one else would have got you the code this fast. You can still try with other providers who are on the net, you will get a response saying code not in database and you will be offered a refund and not a code.
Your totally missing the point here mate, it says on your website "Unlock any HTC phone locked to any network worldwide instantly!". Not in two weeks or when you can be bothered to find the code.
What your doing is like royal mail advertising next day special delivery and then saying well we'll deliver it when we get round to it, can't guarantee when though.
Your are clearly advertising a service you cannot provide or am i missing some smallprint here?
I emailed you my IMEI as soon as the software failed to generate my code? However I shall "instantly" do it again.
@ crazy
The mistake is at your end.
You have not read the instructions.
The code has been generated , but you have not clicked on get using the software.
http://www.htccode.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9
@ Fradulentpassion
Yes it does work now your right, however from the information i sent you last night when i tried you will know exactly what i did? Seems funny how a quick rant on here has got results! You still fail to aknowledge the short fallings in your service though which is the issue here?
Thanks anyway. For all those people wondering, code received, orange htc hero now unlocked. Result

[Q] Contact from Asus?

Hi All, I've just had a PM from one of the other forum members:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4087579
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for purchasing ASUS TF101 Transformer tablet system. Currently we have noted your comment on the forum about the issues in using TF101 docking unit and we need your help to investigate the root cause of the issues. Therefore, we are happy to exchange your full TF101 system (include tablet, docking, power adaptor and cable) with a new one. If you agree, please reply with your name, phone# and e-mail, our customer service representative will contact you shortly. Your satisfaction is our goal, do not hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.
Sincerely,
Customer Service Center

-----------------------------
After viewing his profile - he mentions that he 'had to contact Asus Support' himself for some of the issues he was having, so I'm a little suspicious that he actually works for Asus. Needless to say I'm finding this a little unusual as the couriers are turning up today to pick up my dock, and I have had no official contact from Asus about returning everything....
Has anyone else had any PMs like this - does anyone know this guy?
EDIT: It would appear I was wrong - see post #19, and others around it
I suggest you call Asus and confirm the job before you let it go
if Asus isn't in his username then it is fake. Forum vendor reps usually are in the form (vendor)(name)
So like Asusbob
Yeah, I thought as much, although I do remember seeing someone on here who was actually from Asus, but didn't have an Asus tag before their name, and now I can't remember who it was!
I think I've been a little vague and it's caused minor confusion! There isn't a courier turning up from this guy, I have a genuine courier that I arranged through Asus officially when I filled out the RMA form, but then I had this message earlier, and was just double checking that this guy genuinely wasn't from Asus.
God knows what he's phishing for - I wouldn't have thought this would be enough detail to really steal anything from me, or phone asus and arrange a different delivery address etc. Perhaps he was trying to get me to send him my tablet!
Anyway, I didn't give him any details, so have nothing to worry about - but heads up people!
Sounds like a great way to get a free system. Strange that they are asking for everything back even the cable. I would call asus ( do NOT use the number the email provices) to verify any info they give you prior to sending my stuff.

It's pretty obvious he/she is a fake and scammer considering the posts made so far. I'd report asap to a mod to get this goon banned before someone foolishly falls for it.
There are a few legitimate Asus reps on here including Asus_NA. I worked with Asus_NA to RMA two devices (one died from FOTA and the other, ~99% perfect, had a problem with adjusting the backlight) and they provided me free shipping via Asus fedex delivery, they were able to confirm when my package arrived at their facility and also updated me, on here, about when my replacement will ship out followed very shortly by an email from Asus with the packing list and tracking number. My newest transformer arrived yesterday.
So if Asus_NA ends up contacting you then they're legitimate.
However, the user that sent you the message seems to way not legitimate and i'd report it ASAP. Get them banned for trying to rob someone.
The three legitimate Asus reps on these forums are Asus_NA, Eric Liu, Rich @ Asus. Their might be a fourth, Rick @ Asus. I've worked mostly with Asus_NA.
Jeez
I am glad you got suspicious. That would totally suck to send the whole setup to a scammer. I guess no place is safe. Sorry to hear you are having problems though. My second TF101, serial number B50...... works great. Good luck.
Thanks Guys, these friendly and helpful responses are why I love this forum, even if I do get the odd phishing PM!
I haven't heard anything back from that so-called Asus person, so will report that private message so a mod can look into it - anyone know who I should be talking to? I had a quick look in the message to see if there was a link to report it, but couldn't find one....
Thanks again everyone.
Scammer...
look at that persons posts
"I had the same problem, then, I call to ASUS.
Their reply is they will upgrade server by 5/20."
"Oh~ I go to the ASUS official website to find th following.
One year of Unlimited ASUS WebStorage, two USB ports, SD and Micro SD card readers for easy sharing & storage expendability
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_...sformer_TF101/"
"thank you, will try on my device"
sound like a ASUS rep to anyone? Not even close.. report his/her ass
but, come to think about it, some people have made claims that when theyve spoken to ASUS, theyre clueless...lol
maybe he/she was forwarding something to you? (im trying to be optimistic..lol)

Those were exactly the posts that roused my suspicions! I always seem to be a victim of really poor phishing scams, and as I've worked in IT for 12 years, I consider myself a bit wiser than most to scams like this!
Hell, I once got one of those Nigerian Scam emails - except it wasn't an email, it was an actual letter and had a stamp on it and everything! I feel sorry for the poor chumps who aren't a cynic like me and get caught out by this stuff!
Who should I report it to? (the Asus Scammer, not the Nigerians! )

I got the same PM from the same user - "Kimi_Q"..
I just assumed by the broken Engrish - and all of the support posts that they were an Asus 1st line trying to point people to the proper support - but I was still suspicious..
As others have said, I'd never give any one from a forum any private info via PM (or other).
I got that pm and did respond to it. Definitely suspicious but not really very private info. Haven't heard anything further.

You'd be surprised. Using just an email address it's often possible to figure out their address and more. If you have an RMA processing and they have that information they could call Asus and pretend to be you, then say they've moved house or want the delivery to their work address, and boom, your stuff goes elsewhere!
Just an example, but you can't be too careful. A few google/facebook/directory enquires searches, and you can find out loads of information about someone, enough to convince a company when you phone them.
That may not be happening at all, but be careful about giving your details out to people you don't know.

I replied to the PM too. I got a call today from a 510 number but couldnt answer as I was in a meeting. Calling the number back got to ASUS support main line, but I didnt know where to go from there, so I hung up. Now can they spoof caller IDs too, must be a elaborate scam for sure
Update: I got the call again. I spoke to a live person, who set me up with an RMA for the dock. The RMA # given to me was trackable through ASUS site, and I received a free FEDEX shipping label addressed to Asus in CA, USA. I told him about this thread, and he asked if I could vouch for the legitimacy of the PMs that many of us received. PM me if you need any other details.

Yeah I just got off the phone and got setup for the RMA. He mentioned the message from Kimi. It is indeed real

Beware of Sunchip company !!!

Unfortunately i don't have a great message count here, but you can check my record in biggest computing forum in Russia - 4PDA
I want to share with you my very unsuccessful experience with that company called Sunchip!
In december 2014 i bought CX-929 RK3288 android stick from them. It arrived pretty fast with DHL and pre-sale communication was also very fast.
In January 2015 i contacted Sunchip to order another unit for my aunt as a gift for her birthday, and again everything was very quick and unit arrived just in time..
Ok, so now the issue. My own unit (the one i bought in late december) just got broken. No signal. it was recognising Ok by PC, i could flash by backup files but it was something hardware related, probably HDMI.
So i contacted Sunchip about my problem, and that where the problems begun.. First of all communication speed has drastically fall. I roughly got replies once in couple of days.. Then, after we agreed that i need to send my unit to them for repair i been asked to cover both shipments to and from Sunchip! In my long years practice with China suppliers this is unusual request, especially when purchase been made just in less than a month prior to warranty cal! Only after my direct email to CEO of sunchip, they accepted one way delivery payment! So i sent my package to china with registered mail on 08.02.2015 and it's arrived in China pretty quick. Unfortunately it fall on New year hollidays in China, so i been forced to wait untill sunchip will back to work on 27.02.2015 as per Mr. Kobe Chen words.. here is the quote :
Hi Jacob,
Well noted, we are on Chinese new year holidays and will be back to office on Feb 27th, we will inform you when we receive the package.
Thanks.

Kobe

I'm concern about one's safety on this site!

I contacted the moderator:
I have the strangest suspicion that this member, kp263 was trying a scam on me. I posted a message regarding help to fix my bricked LG D858HK, and kp263 contacted me by private messaging requesting. After I sent my number, I received a message, saying; I'm always offline on WhatsApp. I responded; I normally turn my phone off 12.00 am to 8.00 am UK time because I don't want to be disturb at those times when sleeping, but I'm available all the other times. I also mentioned; I'm using another phone, as the LG is bricked (of course). I started to get suspicious and asked; how are you going to repair phone in the UK when you're in India? But, I didn't get a reply, so I contact him again. So he informed me that was away for a few days.
Could this member have been leading me on to a scam? Check this member out - could be dangerous...! But Moderator doesn't seem to be concerned...

My response to moderator:
Speculation!? As a moderator, you don't seem to be concerned regarding the safety of users on your site! This dude wanted to gain access and control my PC and could have stolen information via a piece of software he wanted me to install, and you're not concern about that!? Or, could it be that he may be connected with you/your site?
The problem is with my phone, so why did he wanted to access my PC? Why didn't he send me the instruction by private message (like I asked him to), or better yet, publicly, so that others can see, who may be experiencing same or similar problems, so they can refer it his cure? Why didn't he respond to several questions...I'd put to him regarding my concern of him accessing my PC?
If you're not going to check him out, I'll have to make this public so that others can be aware of this

If you're not going to check him out, I'll have to make this public so that others can be aware of this

you should never give out your number and install software you don't know what it does.
Use common sense, you made a mistake to give out your number and if you installed software you don't know what it does nobody else to blame but yourself.
Sorry to sound harsh but you need to be careful what you do as well and protect yourself

I'm sure there are novices that use this site that doesn't know the risks... But, I'm not a novice as far as the internet is concerned. I know the dangers and this why I didn't download the software and questioned the dude.
So I'm in a jam with my phone and asked for some genuine help and was hoping I would get it in return, at least so I thought. These scammers should look into by the moderator/s and not ignored but rooted out; because not everyone would be aware of this sort of practice on xda, and is not a matter of common sense. Are you saying you've never given a stranger your mobile number? I sure you have. So where is your common sense that? :silly:

Moderator's comments: Cannot act on speculation. Add member to your ignore list and seek reputable verified help in the future.

Do you mean this user https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=7532374 ?
Do you have any idea how many accusations are made similar to this on this site of almost 8 million users? So YES we need proof of wrong doing. The message you reported was a simple Whatsapp request. No where did he ask for access to your computer. He did suggest he could fix your problem with Teamviewer. Generally these members are not scammers but are trying to sell you their repair service. When we have proof of attempted sales, then the accounts are removed.
Thank you for bringing this member to our attention and adding to our investigation already in progress.
Have a nice day.

This dude was shady... If I wasn't alert and aware of these type of scams and fraud, I would have let him have his wicked way and could have scammed me. I not gonna deal with someone in India when am in the UK and especially the way he wanted me too. No way!
As a good and responsible citizen and trying to help to stomp out scamming and fraud, my original message to you was to make you aware of the situation..., but your replied was sarcastically... When I get scamming emails and forward them on to the banks, etc, they thank me for informing them - unlike you. Your statement above (Thank you for bringing this member...) would have been just nice in the first place. There is another guy on your team (who was very nice - not sarcastic) that I sent the message to in the first place but he instructed me to contact the moderator because he didn't deal with that area. So, it seems that there are nice guys amongst you all.

Sure...but as I said...they generally try to sell you a service under the radar of XDA moderators because selling of anything on this site is not allowed except in the paid app section. That is the shady part. We remove these types daily once we get evidence of them asking for money. The repair is usually legitimate. Thanks for adding to our evidence against this member.
So others thank you and do nothing, but I tell you we need evidence and then do something...which would you prefer. By the way I am still awaiting an answer to that PM.
@Soundboy There are many legitimate people out there that will help people through teamviewer out of the kindness of their heart. So next time present more evidence than a Whatsapp request and offer to go on teamviewer. Back in the Epic 4G days of 2011 I helped someone through it and know of another good friend that helped members through teamviewer all day long and only for whatever they wanted to donate to him, even if it was nothing. So your paranoia was insufficient to act on without evidence.
I 100% agree with @DJ_MiX . I can't believe I have to say this, but, this world is full of nefarious people out to do you harm. If you expect any website to be able to protect you from every single user, you are in for a shock. Welcome to the internet. :highfive:
Receiving a private message instead of answering your question publicly in the forums should have been a large red flag and warning sirens for you. That's like getting cold called at your house and the person asking for financial information.
These forums are not for one-on-one help. They are for public questions, answers, and discussions so that everyone benefits. I personally would only use private messaging with users who have a long history on the forums. And even then, there's rarely a reason to do so.
You seem nice and you seem like you mean well, just be vigilant and do your due diligence whenever possible. Evil folks prey on the naive. I will personally not be able to help you out with your particular issue, but good luck!

Maybe paranoia... But you haven't seen my messages I sent to him via Whatsapp, asking for his legitimacy... But of no surprise, he didn't respond to them.

I'm always aware and suspicious about private messages, emails, letters and phone calls I get from people I don't know offering their services, e.g. like paying upfront. I always tell them to take a hike! I get them all the time; even from these pretty-young-nice-figure-babes on facebook. It's like; "You're a gorgeous babe; but why you want to friend an old fart like me, old enough to be your granddad or even your great grandad?" They're gone, man! So yes; I'm an internet savvy and on the money! :highfive:
My initial message was only to make you guys aware... I do it all the time; forwarding suspicious contacts to Banks, PayPal, Facebook and Action Fraud. I'm only just trying to make the world a bit safer

Regarding your PM... I've already responded to it yesterday via reply to the email. But since it seems you haven't received it, here it is again: I did google Teamviewer...and that is why I didn't download it to my PC. And yes, I do get lots of Prince in Nigeria..., etc, etc and phone calls too but I don't fall for them. So no, not foolish. I'm not new to the internet but on your site. In fact, I'm a savvy on the internet and know of the dangers.
The account countfox: because when I first join I made a spelling mistake with my username and after about 4 times of asking Brendon to edited he failed to deal with it, so I set up another account. But it was changed by another person in the end after I contacted him. So, I kept on using Soundboy because my message was already on it. If there was a way for me to edit or delete them myself I would have done so instead of relying on you guys. Anyway, you can delete both of them because they no use to me now.
Cheers!
