at the risk of sounding like a complete RETARD - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so i currently have what seems to be a stockpile of mytouch 4g phones.
2 are rooted with s-off and running roms.
however my 2 newest bundles of joy seem to be unhackable. i think ive tried every root/s-off trick out there yet i got nothing.
both say the following:
glacier pvt ship s-on
hboot-0.86.0000
microp-0429
radio-26.03.02.26_m
emmc-boot
sep 27 2010, 11:12:59
please help lol there CANNOT be a way that i have 2 crap unrootable phones.
the phone i currently use has:
glacier pvt ship s-off
hboot-0.85.2007 (pd1510000)
microp-0429
radio-26.03.02.26_m
emmc-boot

just to give the whole story...

Youve tried gfree?
Sent from my My Touch 4G using XDA Premium App

Try gfree and use the visionary r11 app its older but will do the trick.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

gfree is the only way i didnt try. lol i got scared when i read "this is not for the faint of heart"

its not that bad there's just no room for error, I tried every method but only gfree worked,

My bootloader was 0.86 just like yours. First try I got s off via visionary r14 app and root.sh. So your most likely messing something up. Follow the unlockr method. Gfree isnt a good idea. To many people have gotten screwed up errors in recovery. Or chances are your new phones have bad emmc chips. Then in that case only the gfree method will work.
Sent from my cyanogenmod, warp speed edition phone. Dont be jealious!

Gfree worked! I was a little nervous but took my time. Actually to be honest it didn't seem that bad. Thanks once again for bailing my ass out guys!

wow 2 bad chips...i hope not i did get the phones from 2 separate people and at different times.
if the chips are bad whats that gonna do?

Some phones bricked and the only thing they had in common was the bad chip and gfree. I have the "bad chip" but so far so good and its been two months

Stupid question, but I am a noob

Ive been looking around but I still don't seem to understand something regarding the radios/spls. I have a mytouch 3g 32b board, running cm6. I see people bricking their phones and I was just curious why I would have to update the radio. Do certain roms just not work with stock radios? Thanks!

S-off and s-on question

I'm new to HTC but not android.
And have never heard of s-off or s-on.
Can someone explain what they are, I've searched it but don't understand techy terms much...
Any help would be much appreciated.

[Q] 4G Pops up in notif. bar, even when off?

The H sign always pops up in my notification bar, even when it is switched off, and wifi can be on or off, it doesn't matter. Am I the only person who has this problem, and if not, is there a way to fix this? I'm running stock Froyo btw.

Sadly, yes.
The "bad" eMMC issue is very overreacted upon. Especially while the phone is under warranty.

Wait, if the phone breaks cuz' of the eMMC chip, while still rooted, it's covered under warranty? Btw, I have the monthly warranty from T-mo too.

And my research on rooting continues! Thanks for clearing that up for me, did the eMMC failure occur when changing roms, or just randomly?

ok so here's the whole history of how my phone died:
i was running cyanogenmod 7 and all was well, but i absolutely LOVE HTC sense. it just makes sense you know? so i downloaded evil's desire Z port of HTC sense, flashed it, but the phone didn't boot. not sure why. then i flashed the desire HD version also from evil, and the ROM finally booted into sense 2.0, all was well.. but not for long. about 2 or 3 days later the phone started lagging really bad. at one point it just completely froze and i had to do a battery pull. i was fed up! i found a sense 2.0 ROM made by faux and flashed that. all was well, but once again, not for long. after about a week the phone started lagging again, and one night, it just froze and i did a battery pull, and ever since it's been stuck on the splash screen. i booted into clockworkmod recovery and it gave me some errors about not being able to mount /cache partition. someone on XDA told me to flash the PD151IMG.zip file, so i did. and ended up with Fail-PUs. after that i guessed i was truly bricked. it happened around march or so, only a month after i got this phone, and back then, no one knew what was causing these "sudden deaths". but everyone pretty much knew that the phone was screwed, there was no way to fix it, so i called tmobile and told them my issue, and they sent me a replacement (with the good chip woot woot!)
so basically to sum it all up, symptoms of fail eMMC include:
-lag
-clockworkmod recovery shows errors about mounting
-bootloader gives Fail-PU when trying to flash PD151IMG.zip.

Thanks once again! You've helped me out sooo much. Once I root, I'm probably just gonna stick with Virtuos Unity, it just sounds like my ideal ROM, and it seems like the more roms you flash, the higher the chance of eMMC failure.

Reason to root?

I was origonally using my vibrant which I bricked a couple days ago... Came back to my G2 and now I'm scared to try and root it. I need a little convincing. Can you guys help way the pros and cons?
PS - my warranty on the G2 is up.

The latest (a long time ago) HTC updates killed the speed and performance of the device. Rooting and installing a new ROM will not only keep it up to date they will keep it running better than when you got it day one. Heck you can even install ICS if ya like.
DO IT!
P.S. You sure your vibrant is actually bricked?
For me it made all the difference in the world. You can remove the bloatware, overclock, and choose a rom you like. I've been going back and forth from andromadus ics and mexdroid atomic lately.

Sorry to be pedantic (it's my middle name though). But there's often confusion between rooting and S-OFF/unlocking.
S-OFF is the big thing to get, to open up the world of new ROMs (and S-OFF is far preferable to using the HTCdev bootloader unlock), new radios etc.
Rooting your ROM gives you access to extra stuff, like useful apps that need root (TitaniumBackup being a great example).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Know what you mean, but I've rooted thing thing once. I couldn't get s-on at unroot.

The back has HTC on it.. I am confused, I want to root my phone but I am not sure if I should go under the slide section or what. Please Assist me in finding the correct forum for my phone.

Lol... I have done this, This tells me T-Mobile MyTouch 4g There isnt anything that tells me which one it is.. I know there are many types of Mytouch including Slide and Glacier.. I am currently installing my webcam drivers on my laptop to take pictures of the phone.. I know its not LG and I know its HTC but under this forum there are slides (which mine is not) and Glaciers (Mine could be but I am not sure because it does not specify this)
Ok here are the pictures of the phone..

Glacier is the development code name (used internally by HTC during hardware testing, before it was branded).
The slide model is code named 'Double Shot', different forum.
And the Panache I believe is just the CAN/International name for the MT4G.
Glacier, MT4G and Panche(?) = All the same device.

I'm pretty sure that its a Glacier. A glacier is a mytouch 4g they're one in the same. If you live in the U.S. and got it from someone here its a glacier. The Pananche is the Canadian and European version of the mytouch they are a little bit different and have different ways to root. I hope this helps
Edit: I'm almost completely sure it's a glacier. Another way is to use the xda app and look in your signiture in the settings and it will say sent from my Glacier. Like mine does.

that's definitely the HTC Glacier Mytouch 4G.
the backside of the Mytouch 4G Slide doesn't look like that.
Alright!!! thank you all for your help, after searching on this forums I at first thought it would have been glacier but then got turned around and around trying to make sure that I root this the correct way and not with some other phones method... I would not want to brick it. and by the way yes I do live in the USA and I bought it off of craigslist from a dude here. Thank you all for your help!

Haha.
Well the phone has no keyboard, so it's not a slide.
It's Branded with T-mobile, so it's not a panache.
It's made by HTC so it's not an LG myTouch or Huawei
That leaves one option, as far as released phones.
Now the bootloader verified it for you.
