I was origonally using my vibrant which I bricked a couple days ago... Came back to my G2 and now I'm scared to try and root it. I need a little convincing. Can you guys help way the pros and cons?
PS - my warranty on the G2 is up.

The latest (a long time ago) HTC updates killed the speed and performance of the device. Rooting and installing a new ROM will not only keep it up to date they will keep it running better than when you got it day one. Heck you can even install ICS if ya like.
DO IT!
P.S. You sure your vibrant is actually bricked?
For me it made all the difference in the world. You can remove the bloatware, overclock, and choose a rom you like. I've been going back and forth from andromadus ics and mexdroid atomic lately.

Sorry to be pedantic (it's my middle name though). But there's often confusion between rooting and S-OFF/unlocking.
S-OFF is the big thing to get, to open up the world of new ROMs (and S-OFF is far preferable to using the HTCdev bootloader unlock), new radios etc.
Rooting your ROM gives you access to extra stuff, like useful apps that need root (TitaniumBackup being a great example).

Know what you mean, but I've rooted thing thing once. I couldn't get s-on at unroot.

I love the G2, but not as much as my wife or dog.
what's the P/N? it's on the bottom of box or under the battery.

For what reason would I not root my phone, besides the possibility of owning an expensive paper weight...

Biggest problem is you could brick your device. The other is yes technically it does void your warranty but I have never heard of anyone being denied warranty exchanges on a root device.
It's always been my experience that bricks aren't likely. I've flashed quite a few things. Is it any more likely in this case?

If you can read then you won't have problem rooting. Everything is writing in steps. Unless you are a retard then don't try .
Hahaha I think I'll be alright. Other than almost dd'ing a hard drive the wrong way once I'm pretty astute. I'll probably root next week.

Anyone have favorites on roms, while we're at it.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Hey mate, if I can root anyone can, if u need help pm me. As roms go, u can't really go wrong. Iced and the DHD (desire hd) roms are much like what your running stock just with slightly improved graphics and other customizations. Miui is from another planet where android and ios had a baby, slick smooth and very dif from any other rom ive ever tried. I like it but its kinda like a plymouth prowler, kinda cool lookin but just not quick enough. Cm-6 is prolly the best and def the cleanest android experience. Ive had a couple issues with it but its still what im running.
Awesome reply srivers33 good info. I was leaning towards iced (seems pretty popular) I am looking for something more vanilla but def not a requirement. I might just flash a few and try them each for a little.

Backups
Always make sure u do a true perm root and use rom manager and its clockwork mod recovery to back up the stock. That way if stock 2.3 releases before a good 2.3 rom releases you can just flash and update to 2.3!!!
Thanks dont think I read that in any posts, its a good idea. Definitely sounds easier to go back
Just wondering, will all of the rooting methods and discussion for the Desire Z also work for the G2? I wasn't sure if all of the software was the same between the two, so I didn't want to screw up rooting my G2 next week.
Whole of europe + canada (on bell) = Desire Z
America (only tmobile) = G2
That explains that
And in asnwer to your question.. It's the same method but use the files for the G2 make sure it says this if for G2 though
So are Z and G2 ROMs cross-compatible once you're rooted?

There are also Desire Z users in Asia too (like me)
ROMs are maybe cross-compatible, but the keymappings are definitely not. I experienced this when flashing CM 6.1.1 on my Desire Z and the capacitive buttons got messed up, make sure you back them up on your SD Card before flashing and have your PC ready for adb command since you almost can't type in Terminal Emulator.
Problem is that most of rom builders are G2 users, not desire Z. So doesn't matter if there are more DZ users if most of the modding will happen for the G2. Sorry DZ owners . Though I do believe you will receive some support from the dev.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Not a big problem really. Like I said, just remember to backup the keymappings and have adb ready, and you're all set.

Yeah, that's the only difference between the G2 and DZ that will affect ROMs - the hardware keyboard layout. Not the biggest problem to get over !
It would be nice if all custom ROMs took this into account, not sure what the situation is on that at the moment, but there are thread on the dev forum with DZ keymaps if anyone needs them.
[Apologies for resposting this in other threads, just want as many eyes to see this as possible]
Seems like what you guys are saying here conflicts with what I thought.
Basically, is the T-mobile USA G2 still rootable?
As most of you know, the Desire Z 1.72 OTA update prevents current methods of rooting so I was wondering if new G2 devices from T-mobile are still running rootable ROMS
Thanks!
Well, there was an OTA a couple months back for the G2 but I was still able to root.

Thanks for the reply. Would your G2 be getting an update if there was one? Or are you running cyanogen or something?
I thought G2 owners were receiving the new update as well. I could be completely wrong, in which case the G2 would obviously still be rootable
I just picked my phone up on the 30th and was able to root it without issue.
The phone will alert you almost immediately about the latest OTA tho. Just tell it to install later and you'll be fine.
It doesn't matter aslong as we have the same phones.. ahaha LoL

I'm running cyanogen 7 right now so I'm not sure if there's been an OTA update since, but the last OTA I installed was the November 2010 one and I was still able to root.
Are you talking about the desire z 1.72 update that makes the devices unrootable? Yeah, I don't think the G2 got that one.
Guys im sure as hell no newbie to rooting my own personal phones , but tomorrow my sister is visiting me from Florida with her new Evo on a fresh sprint 2 year contact (yeah dont ask) but anyways she wants to root her phone to tether on WiMAX. Could you guys guide me to the right links on rooting her phone and tell me which rom will be a kick ass rom for her. Most likely that will be the ROM she'll stay with for the rest of her contract.
Searching old thread isn't my thing. I rather suscribe to my own thread.
Also is the rooting process hard? My EVO 3d was a pain in the ass.

It all depends on the software. If its on 2.2 froyo you would use unrevoked. If its on GB 2.3.3 you would use revolutionary.io and if its GB 2.3.5 you have to use HTC dev unlock. I recommend that you put tommytomatoes classic rom on her phone. Its 100% stable and fully working and has great community support

+2 on tommy's rom. Is under the new evo 4g original development section. As far as rooting go is pretty straight forward, just find out which android version she is running ( which might be 2.3.5 ), and go from there.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Depends on preference, Tommy's rom's great. but have some variants for her. also may just show her some rom's she'll most likely want gb for stability and best performance. also HTC Sense rom's lagg a bit in my opinion AOSP seems to lag less for me and run more in a operational fashion.
edit install rom manager on her device and keep her stock rooted tell her she can change the software via that app. screen shot's info and downloads all in one nice little user friendly app.
Thanks for the great info guys. I'll be working on her phone tonight.
Just to make sure, with these roms, she still be able to use the HDMI out on the phone?

No insurance and $200 later, here I am, having to make a warranty claim because HTC screwed up while putting my phone back together.
Rooted. Took the plunge after owning my AT&T M7 for 45 days. Wanted to take advantage of 4.2.2 and I am glad I did.

Rooted but I staid on stock for a pretty long time until revone came along. I only used that to solve a bad kernel wakelock I was experiencing and knew was fixed in 4.2.2. I wanted to go to stock 4.2.2 but can't since now my device is s-off usage reporting to HTC is on and can't be turned off and that is causing bad battery drain too.
But I think all in all the One is so good out of the box there isn't really a big reason to root....
Rooted just cause I'm deeply in love with ARHD. LOL

Rooted & Stock.
It's nice to have a play & see all the lovely tweaks that are acheived with custom roms.
But I think stock has got that good on the One, that as far as day to day tasks & running go there isn't much between stock & custom. But it's sure nice to have a choice & I thanks all the great guys who do the custom roms :good:

AOSP didn't brick your phone. I'm pretty sure you didn't know what you where doing.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
There have been a few bricks on aosp and a few bricks with custom roms that I've read about, I believe that the problem is just random faults HTC, can't expect to have so much going on in a phone, mass produce it on a large scale and not have some phones shutting off permanently for unknown reasons. Sorry for ot. I rooted to see what my one is capable of, tried nearly every Rom but now I'm very content with a stock custom rom that allows me to modify and personalise everything that want
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
I'm stock and unrooted but planning to root after warranty time/no OTAs I love rooting and flashing (got a HTC Desire before and changed it every week ) but always take the OTAs until HTC announce there are no further updates anymore.
I'm pretty satisfied with the One unrooted though. Maybe only (real) negative aspect so far is decreased battery life compared to rooted devices.

Rooted mostly because ARHD did it for me automatically. Greenify is really the only app I use that requires root.
Stock
Spent ages going through ARHD/CM/AOSP roms and all that craic only to end up on a stock rom on the Sensation and had much the better experience on Stock.
Haven't rooted the ONE as i just really don't think it needs it (for me) and so far, i have been proved correct.
Rooted.
Why? So I can clean up the crap I don't want that they schlep into /system, and for tether.
