I know there is a poll already, but I think there needs to be more options. And since you can't edit a poll after the fact, I am making a new poll. You can also select more than one option.
I'm very interested to know why so many Gen8 owners just aren't interested in Gen9. I think it's a good upgrade over the Gen8. Gonna sell mine, hopefully get $175 for it, and then my Gen9 will only cost about $150.
I know one of the options says "only if Archos promises Honeycomb". I know Archos says it will have Honeycomb shipped, but last time they said Gen8 would have Froyo shipped, and it didn't. If they do the same again, I don't think people will be happy.
What say you?
No i'll wait, unless they promise honeycomb (i take it that reflects gen8) as that would mean we might get the next one(s) on gen9 aswel.
No, I meant unless they actually promise and ship Gen9 with Honeycomb.
Honestly, I think Archos is done with major updates for Gen8.
I am fairly certain that all we'll get from here on out is minor bugfixes. The tablet market is heating up, and they are trying to break through. That means all of their attention is going to be on Gen9 and getting Honeycomb on it. So unless they've ported Honeycomb for the Gen8 already, I don't see us getting it (unless a dev gives it).
You don't have a "yes if they give us SDE again"
I'll only be getting one if I can dual boot it easy.
~Jeff
Will wait for reviews. Build quality is important, would be willing to pay extra for a solidly built tablet with the same specs, but I don't think thats what we are going to get.
The Archos (70 IT at least) are really solid, mine as fallen from a head height, and, yes, the case is broken, but the screen isn't and everything work as out of the box, do the same with an ipad, the screen is dead.

I think I am one of the few people who think that the Gen8 was well constructed. My A70 has always been solid, and I was very surprised at that.
Anyway, apparently the Gen9 has a uni-body frame (at least I remember reading that somewhere) which should lend to greater stability than ever before. I'm sure Charbax will get his hands on one soon, and let us know his impressions of the device.

Actually liked the gen 8 A101 for what it was an "entry level device". Was light and thin, very convenient and not a hassle to transport around. And the investment was appropriate for where the technology was. After seeing the the Samsung offerings I wish archos would add a little eye candy along with great specs.
They're shipping with Honeycomb. (since 3.2 is around the corner, we most likely get 3.1 then promised for 3.2)
All demos run HC. Best of all, Google Approved Market.
(This was a deal break for some when they ship Gen8 with no Market. You need to sideload + do the app fix to show all apps)
I believe Gen8 was right on the price/function ratio. (~1:1)
I paid $250 for A70 vs $699 for Sammy Tab.
This time Gen9 is well exceeded this ratio. (~1:2)
$279 for 1.5Ghz Dual core. 3G for $50 more. 16GB + microSD. HDMI. Full USB.
vs.
$629 ipad 2 3G (Got this for Bday... consider selling it once Gen9 available)
1 GHz Dual Core. 16GB no microSD. HDMI(+$79 for stupid dongle). no USB.
The biggest problem i had with Gen8 was the memory being so low (only ~256MB)
From the Demos, i can tell it's as fast as the Asus Transformer (which has 1GB ram). So I'm sure this will have at least 512MB (same as iPhone 4 or iPad 2)

Seriously, if Archos puts less than 1GB of RAM of these tablets, i'm gonna pull my hair out. There just isn't any reason to put 512MB in it. The cost difference can't be that much, after all, it is DDR2.
I just don't see why Archos would go for the minimum (I think Honeycomb requires min 512MB), when it is so clear that the amount of memory is absolutely crucial to a tablet's performance and success.
I would be very surprised and disappointed if they did that. I can forgive anything else (no back camera, no customized Flash, even cheap plastic materials), but I can't forgive them hamstringing the Gen9 with less than 1GB of memory.

They already confirmed the hardware specs^^
They have 1 gb ram
Will these be able to play high profile 4.1 mkv since it isn't a Tegra2. If so I will buy this asap, with a dual core 1.5ghz it should be able to
3.1 not 4.1. And you can't buy them asap; they're not on sale until the end of September.

OK, I thought it was just an unconfirmed "leak" that showed the specs. Well, good. I am looking forward to getting my hands on Gen9 then.
The fact that android needs at least 512meg of RAM to run is sickening. I can run a full blown Linux OS with 128meg.

In my best old people voice:
"I remember years past when a man could get by with just a shade over 64 Mega bites of memory and a commodore 16. Kids today...with their facebooks and the twitters. I had to hand deliver messages ya little punk!"
As some previous posters had also noted, only if Archos manages to deliver a firmware that makes the Gen8 what it is supposed to be, would I ever consider buying any Archos-tablet again.
Until such time, NO WAY!

Yeah, but what's the point of that. If you're gonna buy a new Gen9, what does it matter what happens to the Gen8? It's not like Archos promised Gingerbread for the Gen8 and then pulled the rug out from under us.
In anycase, We'll definitely get Gingerbread for Gen9. And I think Googs is pushing manufacturers to provide at least 18 months of updates for Android devices. I know Archos isn't part of that consortium, but I think that bodes well for upgrades.

Recommendations are requirements are not the same, as you know. The emulator only uses about 80 megs for Honeycomb. I think it's more the third party apps that cause the increase than the OS itself.
The point is that the Gen 8 tabs were riddled with problems: broken USB, wifi issues, battery charging issues, blue tooth and tethering problems, etc.
They may be able to deliver a gen 9 tab with Honeycomb which might likely include a boat load of problems. Also it has been noted that Archos still must get Google certification for its Gen 9 tabs to have access to Google Market, if the wait for certification is anything like for Gen 8, then Gen 9's will never get Google certified

Hey all,
I've been shopping android tablets for a couple weeks now. After considering the nook color to the galaxy tab, to the viewsonic G, I am now considering the Archos 101.
A tablet for me is a want. Primary uses would be browsing, reading (kindle app?), movies, some games, and I would like to spend less than 300 ( I've seen used 101's for around 270). I also like to mod/root but this is not a must if the stock UI works well. Did see a little developing here on XDA...A nice dark UI on YouTube.
With that said, my question to current Archos 101/70 owners, is would you buy an Archos today or wait it out for other tabs to come out? (Arnova 10 gngrbread model, Amazon tabs, quad core tegra's)
Love the specs on the 101, but does the limited 256mb of RAM hamper the device, and is there a lack of apps optimized for the nice 10in screen? Is the 101 heavy to hold for long periods of time?
Thanks in advance!

1) I would say for you, condering in you uses above, buy the A101. I own it, and i love it!
This is the best Tabet for browsing, chatting and gaming
You won be able to play the future games in a few months (brand new Samurai II works very well - ths game is for Nvidia Tegra devices)
And the best about Archos and exspecially about the A101 - The Price!
2) A little bit, but you'll accostume this
3) Nope^^ Some games have a little bit crappy graphic but not many (for example Stick Cliff Diving)
4) Nope^^ Its extremly light. Its feel like the half of the iPad.
Special Tip:
If you want Honeycomb and play the future Games, you hould wait until Q4 of '11 untill the "Gen9 - A101" will be released
Awesome thanks!
The kindle app?
Whats the max microsd card it can support? 32gb?
Wait. Or buy a transformer or acer iconia.
101 build quality is iffy at best. Screen is terrible. Current fw is totally flaky.

3) Yep, you're right 32 gb (The first 64 gb card, was just announced) But you have the Usb Host (HDD's and USB Sticks)
Tip:
Cajl (owner of JBMM) recevied a flyer from Archos about a Gen9 Event, if you're interested in that, you should look at it (Theres a Thread around here about this)
the best ereader app for archos is the Nook app. It gives you the freedom of loading in any epub. The kindle app is limited to kindle formatted files. also the nook app has good features. I read alot on my 70it and i have tried just about every app out there. The nook app is the best overall.

Thanks again to all for their input,
and with that said,
I took a look at the GEN 9 devices already on the net .. They look very nice, but I can't justify 500 dollar price tag for my wants..(really a cool tech toy). However, after the release of Gen 9, perhaps Gen 8 prices will drop some.
I also looked into the Iconia and Transformer, and as mentioned, they're too much in cost. I know they're both awesome, but I would really like to stay in that sub-300 range. I have looked at pretty much all the tablets on the market right now, and the 101 seems to offer the most for the money. Especially with the DARK UI that the user on youtube has put over it.
Thanks to all who looked into the Kindle App. I haven't used the nook app, but I have some books I am reading on my Kindle app on my Samsung Fascinate
I have decided that of the current options available, the 101 is the best option out there for the price. If I were to buy today, I would go with it.
However, with the tablet market so exciting right now, I think I'll work on making a rough man cave in the basement (which will need a new LCD TV) and then look into the tablets towards Q4 , "Black Friday" when I bet there will be better deals.
Just curious, can you add more RAM to the 101?

You have this 2 options:
Compcache - This will comprimise a part of your Ram Memory.
Swap - This will add some extra Mb's of Ram out of the normal Flash Memory.

400 Euro which is about 566 US..

Those numbers on the Engadget link were posted back in March. I doubt we'll be seeing those as the actual prices.
I would expect to see the prices pretty close to the Gen8 original pricing.

And in the past, Archos sold products for same prices ($=€)
The Prices won't be over 300 dollars for the normal 10.1 Inch variant
good to know, thanks! I guess I'll be waiting!
Do you all think the GEN 8 devices will have some Honeycomb custom ROMS ever? These 101's are going for cheap on ebay, and it's very tempting.

I`m a optimist and i say: YES
sibere just did a test, about how much RAM honeycomb need...(Read here at xda)
and it just need 94 MB! The rest is free RAM
But we need the sources, so we dont get Honeycomb until the Q4 of 2011, when google releases the HC Source Code or the Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) Source Code

There isn't exactly a guarantee on that one. I would assume that we'll be looking at closer to $350 for the 10" model.
We might get HC on the Gen8 devices, but it won't be until after the HC source is released, and we aren't exactly sure when that will be, so don't expect it any time soon (better to assume it will be later rather than sooner).
Honestly, I don't expect official HC on Gen8, maybe some GB love, but not HC.
Also, the test done was JUST for the system, nothing else. We will be running a lot more than just that. You have to include all of the background things that run, so don't expect there to be more than ~80-100MB free at any given time. Currently we see ~110 at best free on FroYo, so I honestly wouldn't expect more than that.

Me too but i love my A101
I have an Archos 101 8GB for sale if you are interested. PM me if you are.
The eLocity A7 is a 2.2 tablet, so it is being eclipsed by the new 3.0 tablets. But the current A7 prices ($180 used, $240 new on eBay) are much lower than the 3.0 tablets. So I've been contemplating picking one up for noodling around while I am riding around on mass transit. Basically playing Angry Birds, Plants versus Zombies, listening to MP3's, reading Kindle books, and watching videos. As an unlocked device it might also be fun to try other ROM's too. So I am curious about current user's perceptions.
Would you buy your A7 again at current prices?
How usable is it out of the box versus needing to install Dexter's ROM's?
As I understand it, the A7 isn't true multi-touch, but does support pinch to zoom. How limiting have you found this?
Dexter appears to be hard at work on A7comb, but there are bugs. Have user's found this a viable way to use Honeycomb on the A7?
I just bought one the other week for 240 off of ebay and am loving it. Don't feel like there is anything in the same price range that can do what it does. I simply wanted to be able to play nes, snes, and psx roms on the go with an xbox 360 controller, as well as play HD videos and output it through HDMI. So I am happy with my purchase.
I would definitely recommend putting on dexters mod as well as the xbox patch if you have a 360 controller.
I feel though if you don't want the 360 controller support there might be better options for you in this price range that still have hdmi support.
Thanks good to hear. I had heard about the 360 controller support, but I doubt I would use that during the commute.
I would buy the A7 at current prices. I paid $300 when they first appreaed on Amazon becuse I wanted Tegra performance with plenty of RAM and Storage. I would definitely use Dexters ROM becuase it gives you the market. (Three Cheers for Dex)
I use Dolphin HD for a browser and A7 Zooming works just fine just by touching the + - screen icon.
I use the Nook Reader, do email and calendars, surf the web and listen to my favorite MP3. Except for the reader, these are activities I used to do on my little droid. These are much better on the A7.
I also use a Tega2 which is a 10.1 tablet which will run Android or Windows. Right now I am running Win7 Professional and it does everything a Netbook would do. If Windows 8 meets my expectations, I will use it on the Tega2 10.1.
I will be upgrading my phone soon. I am considering a an HTC Thunderbolt setup to take advantage of Verizon's very fast 4G. The Thunderbolt will also act as a mobile Hotspot for my A7 and make it truley mobile.
Price is what you pay; value is what you get. I am satisfied with the value of my A7.
I do have one gripe for StreamTV, makers of the A7. I don't think they understand or appreaciate the value of the Dexter's of this world. Their hardware would be so much more valueable if they cooperated with the XDA community and Dexter and help him realize the full potential of the hardware. I keep hoping StreamTV managment will wake up one day and empower the XDA community with A7's code. Doing so would only enhance the name and value of StreamTV.

StreamTV/eLocity are not the manufacturers of this device. The manufacturer is Compal, and eLocity is just a branded reseller.
Also I REALLLLLY suspect that they don't have anything to do with any coding at all, never mind releasing more than they already have... Remember back to when they were releasing kernel source. They blamed the delays on their "overseas programmers". Sure it takes a little reading between the lines, but they couldn't provide anything because the actual manufacturer hadn't supplied them with anything.
Not so much...
It has been a special experience getting these various ROMs that have been giving a much needed level of usefulness to the Elocity A7. If I knew it was going to require all this to get some basic enjoyment out of this device, it would have never been purchased with my tech dollars. Kudos to Dexter and others for making it worth more than a Frisbee but, Archos seems like it may have been a better choice or simply waiting for the dust to settle before buying anything at all.
Multi-touch, which is very standard now and was even on lower powered handsets when this Tab came out, just seems like a must have.
We know tablets work differently than phones but, having affordable large MicroSD cards but a poor access and management solution just blows, perhaps this device was rushed to shelves too soon.
Nice bright 7" inch display with non-backlit keys...this has been aggravating on numerous occasions.
Every once in a while I take a look at that docking port and mumble "one day, one day".
There has been occasions when a daydream about what could be done if the SIM card slot wasn't blocked would pop into my head then that too fades away.
Very grateful for the ear-buds that were included, they really make up for the low volume of the built-in speakers.
There are many great aspects about this tablet but, it's not without it's flawS.
I recently got another tablet, Acer Iconia A500 which i started supporting..
and i can say, that i suspect knowing where the latest COMPAL "picasso" went
Iconia A500 is another COMPAL product, but fully 3.1 compatible and probably 2nd/3rd gen. of compal products..
so if you find a compal picasso dupe, it is probably compatible with acer's latest product. but the devices are now locked (but they can be semi-opened), so its not easy to modify, but it is possible.
anyways, i think thats why the new products are delayed probably where compal put its focus now.. making 3.x tablets..
and to keep topic,
is the IconiaA500 in US, not compable pricewise to $300 ?
Honeycomb on A7, folio100,Vega etc.. are all using semi-GL drivers, which does not work 100% which makes it not perfect, but A7 works prety ok (i havent installed the original mod since my honeycomb install).. but since its not getting drivers made and any new kernel compiled, a real update is far from being made..
Dexter, the Iconia A500 is $450 in the US. If I was going to spend that amount I would likely opt for the Asus at 400 as I think there build quality is usually pretty good.
If I understand the driver issue. StreamTV released the kernel source, but the drivers remained closed source? So the 2.2 binary drivers aren't fully compatible with Honeycomb?
Even with it's super sensative screen and horrible built in speakers I would still go out and buy another one if I had to. It's HDMI out, super fast processor and great price are a good deal IMO.

In Denmark Acer is actually cheaper ($15), but it has the extra builtin usb device port. and it seems now that the "dolby" feature acer got, it much preferred over assus when it comes to audio.
A7,
the drivers are there, and source is ok. but its an old one, and nvidia adapted drivers differently..and im no that "hardcore" when it comes to drivers conversion where needed..
but it is all there, 2.6.32.9 kernel source is ok, i compiled and used it for some ports.
So dexter the A7 reach its potential with updates, vizio or asus will be my next choice..

Agreed 100%
For the money, it's a great device.
I find every last complaint about it unfounded... If people wanted all the features of a $700+ tablet, then they would have bought one. Don't spend less than half of that and complain because it doesn't have a couple of the same features lol

The A7 is a super sweet tablet. My eyes are not what they used to be and I really needed something with a larger screen so I bought the WiFi Xoom, and my daughter promptly stole the A7 from me. Size-wise, the A7 is really great (nice and light and a good size for many games) but hard for me to use on the road for work because it has such a small screen. Also battery life is too short, but with the Pal Energizer power pack 8000 (supports 19 v) that can be fixed (though one more thing to carry). Multi-touch is nice but my Xoom is almost too sensitive.
I think each tablet has it's own ups and downs, but I love them both.
Both are also greatly improved by being rootied and customized, so huge thanks to all the developers!
I'm sold, compared to the resistive screen tablets which are not much cheaper, the A7 sounds like a better option. I know about the short battery life, but I plan to use on the T, charge, then then use on the way home.
I'll reply when I become a user which should hopefully be soon.
A7 is a good alternative for now, at the price you can get it! 110%..
if you dont mind the small limitation of android2.2 or semi-3.0 i have given the added value of a A7. its a nice tablet, and i have used it more often than my folio100 ever was in my living room..and it kinda light weight
An aside for anyone thinking of buying a used A7. I've watched several eBay auctions (and won one last night). A 3 month old A7 with case went for $168.50, another a7 failed to meet its reserve and the auction ended at $157.50.
I won an auction for an a7 with case and 16 GB SD card for $190. I figured the SD card and case made it worth a bit more.
So all of these prices are inline with my observation that a used A7 is going for about $180 US.

So all of these prices are inline with my observation that a used A7 is going for about $180 US.

Lucky.
I paid a little over $300 for my A7, plus a new 16bg mircoSD, plus a case
Well new has a warranty while used is a risk. But if I have a working A7 a week from now (that keeps working) I will feel lucky.

Best of luck.
As long as you keep your expectations of it realistic, you'll love it.
Not sure if there is any truth to this, but check out this article from Android Police and judge for yourself:

looks good, if it is anything like that describe it.
It should make the xoom soooo much better.

Really? Because I didn't get that impression at all from the article. The impression I got is that it adds support to smaller devices, qualcom processors and an update to the video editing app. That doesn't really qualify as "soooo much better" in my mind.
It took just a couple mouse clicks and I was able to learn that 3.2 is for the smaller (e.g. 7") screen and 3.1 is for the larger (e.g. 10") screen tablets, beyond that there is no significant difference.
Remember.......Google is your friend.

I guess if it is true, at least it'd get us closer to the possibility of source code being released since they would have taken care of the smaller tablet size porting issue.
From the ThisIsMyNext post, the main benefit is different res & CPU support (well, QualComm at least). It supposedly also improves "hardware acceleration," which would be a perk for existing Teg2 devices. But apparently, any substantive improvement will come in ICS.
My impression is that HC is a ICS beta, released early so that Android vendors can establish a tablet market this year against the iPad juggernaut. One wonders if that means ICS can at least make Q4, or if it will miss the Xmas shopping season altogether. If it's pushed to 2012, and assuming Win8 beta gets good reception come Sept, Android may have a steeper path to adoption than envisioned.
There is nothing "to die for" in the upgrade...
3.1 wasn't a major upgrade either, but it was still welcomed. As it stands, 3.1 is still a mixed bag, which is born out in lackluster sales. 3.2 reportedly will be in time for back-to-school, and hopefully will make Android tabs presentable enough to be a viable competitor to the iPad.
"As for timing, we’re told that current tablets like the Motorola Xoom will get the update in the “next few weeks,” with new seven-inch tablet hardware to follow in August."
here we go with the term next few weeks...
its going to be next few months again before we even sees it..
Ok - that's great - we don't know what other additions are thrown in to 3.2 but the major thing is support for more processors and smaller sized screens - knowing Google they have probably thrown in heaps of other little minor changes...
like 3.1 which was touted as loads of bugfixes? then throw in that usb host and xbox controller goodness and bluetooth mouse stuff...
let's just wait and see what officially gets announced as 'fixed' or 'upgraded' in the 3.2 announcements...
also is this the first time an Android OS has gone through three (major?) revisions, from 3.0 (-> 3.0.1) -> 3.1 -> 3.2
I think if I recall wasn't Eclair 2.0 and 2.1 ?

This should have been the title of your thread. Or, perhaps more accurately, "I didn't bother to research this because I care much more about being the first to post hearsay than about the validity of my posts."
I think we can assume this is pretty well confirmed, due to the recent announcements of 7 inch Honeycomb tablets by Huawei and Acer. 3.2 seems to be basically a maintenance release aimed at setting up the infrastructure for ICS. Google needed to get the 7 inch tablets on the same version as the 10 inchers so that they can focus on phone integration in ICS.
However the news is not all 7 inch focused. I think hardware acc. improvements is good news for the Xoom and other larger tablets and I am sure there will be general improvements and performance tweaks. I would expect to see other fixes related to the recent movie rental abilities of non-rooted tablets.
While not a world shaking update it will be welcome to US Xoomers, and I for one am already looking acquisitively at the 7 inch Iconia tablets running HC3.2 that Acer has announced.
As for Euro Xoom users, can we hope that Moto decided to just jump 3.1 and focus on a 3.2 Euro update?

I'm sure that line will be bandied about but I don't know if there's any truth in it. Tbh, I'm sure BRD and the rest of Team Tiamat will have the update ready for us before Moto even think about a Euro release. /sigh.

Nice contribution to the thread.
I had the A100 on my radar since 10" is too large for my preference, but its announced specs were disappointing. It has half the RAM (512MB vs 1GB), half the storage (8GB vs 16GB), and half the battery capacity (1530mAh vs 3260mAh) of the A500.
http://www.blognotes.in/compare-acer-iconia-tab-a100-vs-iconia-tab-a500/
At USD$350, it's only $50 less than the Asus TF, which for the Acer brand is grossly overpriced. Acer's waffling Android support is also worrying. It's going for the shotgun approach and sees what sticks, releasing a ChromeOS laptop and a Win7 (Iconia W500) tablet at the same time. Yet it has cut its tablet sales projection by 60% for 2011. Not exactly a vote of confidence in Android.
Another downer is that when it comes out in Q3, the Tegra 2 will be close to the end of its short life cycle. And if ICS shows up in Q4, then it's a triple-whammy of outdated hardware & OS, and halfhearted vendor support. Imagine getting a Teg2 in Jul/Aug, and 3 months later, ICS pops out the chute with the quadcores in tow.
I suppose it boils down to whether it serves one's immediate needs. But too many consumers will buy into these things expecting continued support, and disappointment then ensues, as to wit here.
Weirdly enough, I'm actually looking forward to seeing the Vizio 8" specs, as I like the 4:3 format anyway. If it sports 1024x768 with 3.2 and anything other than the Teg2, it's on my short list.

The Vizio is an interesting option...since I really want something in the 7ish size bracket and the Galaxy Tab and HTC Flyer strike me as steps back in terms of OS with 2.2 and 2.3.
As for Huawei....I have too much experience with Huawei's build quality across their overstretched industries to actually pay my own money for their products.
I'm sure the GalTab 7" will be updated for this year, as Samsung is all-in for the Android effort. Ditto HTC. Once 3.2 hits, I think we'll see new products (or updates) from both.
It's the PC vendors like Asus, Dell, and Acer that Android is more of an iffy proposition. They have strong existing relationships with Microsoft, and will likely be Win8 launch partners. If I were in their shoes, I'd be biding my time for Win8--if its schedule doesn't slip of course.
Huawei...reportedly the 7" is going through carrier channels only. Not a mass-market item. It has no presence in the US anyway.
Motorola will probably say they were waiting for the 3.2 release before pushing an update out to the 3.0.1 non-US models....
although you'd start to hope that 3.2 actually comes out with the sdcard fix by now - in a few more months its not going to be worth it with ICS coming out probably with, like the rest of the 3.x tablets, a working sdcard slot
The Xoom will get 3.2 in the "next few weeks".
As for timing, we’re told that current tablets like the Motorola Xoom will get the update in the “next few weeks,” with new seven-inch tablet hardware to follow in August. We’ll also have to wait and see how this will affect the Ice Cream Sandwich rollout — with Android updates coming this fast we’re finding it a bit hard to believe that Google will be able to stick to its upgrade promises, but we’re all for being proven wrong.

Most of you have probably seen the Gen9 launch (above). Let's find out how many are planning to upgrade to it. Aside from participitating in the poll, please reply with your reasons why you will/won't buy one.
You missed item "maybe" I'll wait for real tests. I've bought Asus Transformer couple of days ago (waiting for delivery) and will play with it by the Autumn. Gen9 will probably my next toy, but maybe not -- it could be Amazon tablet or something else...
err HELL NO!!. too much drama with my 101, I would be a fool to go through it all again, shame really cos it had sooo much potential.
@Kocta
Yes, a "wait-and-see" option should've been included. Unfortunately, AFAIK polls can't be changed once they're up.
Instead, think of it like this: If you're favorably inclined toward buying one, based on the announced specs at this point in time, vote Yes. If not, vote No.
too much hardware and software issues so far with my Gen8 101... maybe again in 1-2 years when they've learned their lessons. but so far I'm planning to buy a Transformer or something similiar by the end of summer
me the 80 gen 9 and the 101 gen 9
No, because they made the wrong size.
As I'm flying alot i don't need that big thing.
The 70IT was just the right size.
Why did they do that?
The 80 is 8"? This isn't much bigger than 7", is it?

In fact, just 2.2cm (=1") bigger
And they've said that they'll bring out 6 Tablet from 5" to 10".
I think these will be A50 A70 A80 A90 and the A101
Wht do you think?
IMHO the 90 should be replaced by a 40 ^^
@Lennb to be exact: 1" = 2,54cm but it's not about the numbers, it's about "how big" does it feel.
1" more in screensize doesn't translate to a 1" bigger device.
Because they changed the format from 16:9 to 4:3 we have 2cm wider but 4 cm higher device.
That is more then 35% higher.
And that 4cm is enough that it doesn't fit in a normal pant pocket ( temp while entering/leaving plane ) and generally makes the thing alot bulkier.
so the new screen format is the problem, not the size for itself
Only if they upgrade Gen8 to Honeycomb - cause then I'd have more faith in the comapny :-D
I'll stick to my newly bought gen8 101.
First of all it'd be a pain to sell it now and wait for the release in sept. Selling it after the release will just have a huger price drop.
Second it's still a budget tablet, u can get good stuff but it won't be like u suddenly get handed an ipad3 / asus transformer 2 / ...
The only things that rly interest me in this is the dualcore and the honeycomb, which both i can live without. (doubt the screen is that much better than the 101it atm)
Since the Gen9 uses the same OMAP4430 as the Pandaboard @ pandaboard.org I'll try one and see how much work it will be to replace the factory bootloader/firmware with u-boot gitorious.org/pandaboard/u-boot
There is no reason why a tabklet should take more than a few seconds to power-on to login for Linux. A few people are also working on knocking off 20 seconds or so from starting Android.
I have already been working with the Pandaboard and if Archos hasn't done too poor a job with the rest of the tablet it might be worth it.

that would rly be a big win on their part
however marketing predicts it's never going to happen (even if they get around the possible ram issue ppl talk about)
I will wait to see if they will upgrade it to IceCream-Sandwich and if they launch another models. May be I will just get me an Archos 7c. Or an Archos Phone Tablet(Dreams come true ). In two months time we will see. Of course it can be something not from Archos, like TF2...
I am seriously wondering whether Archos delivered more problems with the current firmwares (esp. the Battery-Issues) in order to make people buy Gen9 due to being less satisfied with their Gen8 Actually in my case it would be just the other way around - only if Archos manages to deliver a firmware that makes the Gen8 what it is supposed to be, I would ever consider buying any Archos-tablet again.
So there are two conditions: 1. Wait and see if the main Gen8-Firmware-Issues will be fixed 2. Wait and see if the Gen9 come up with similar issues like the USB-Host-failure on Gen8 (I had two of those!) after a few months.
If Archos doesnt come along with a real step forward on firmware soon I will downgrade to 2.1.08 and wait for an easy Custom-ROM-Solution, then watch the market a little longer and save some money for something that lives up to what it is praised for by marketing, probably not Archos again....
It's a pity, the Gen8 really looked good, too, now I havbe become really cautious and suspicious with Archos.
A resounding NO.
I love new gadgets but under no circumstances would i buy another archos tablet. Did anyone else feel robbed after they had used their gen device for a while? I know i did. From random reboots, usb and wifi issues to ridiculous firmware updates that only made things worse!!! I know that i bought a "budget tablet" but I cant help feeling that I should have paid alot less for this device than 300 euro (200 for the 101 would've been more like it and then i might've upgraded to gen 9).
Archos need to learn a lesson and this consumer intends to teach (not that anyone would listen).
Here's hoping that Bodhi linux quench's my disappointment a little.
p.s. To the people who voted yes, you're either crazy or have too much money lying around.
I usually look at all the tablets at electronic stores and the last 1-2 weeks I have not seen 1 on display.
Fry's no longer have them on display. Staples and HH Gregg used to have a power display and neither are displaying them also.
Wonder if Acer is just getting ready for the next versions.
I would guess they are clearing them out in hopes of replacing them with ICS versions.
Just my guess, but a lot, I mean a LOT of tablets are at 'fire sale' prices.
Then you got tablets like the Kindle Fire out there that are really cheap.
Now for a look into my Crystal ball, I see data moving to the Cloud. Tablets getting cheaper and cheaper. Apps and the Cloud growing to the point hardware is irrelevant. Tablets will become disposable just like a disposable camera, what's import is the apps and data are on the Cloud.
Now; fast forward 10 years. Everyone will have a data profile that is their personal space. This personal space, is maintained in cyberspace (the cloud or call it skynet ). The Cloud is world wide and can be accessed from just about anywhere on the planet using wireless G5 (huge fast bandwidth). Your phone, your car, your PC, your tablet, your TV all are just vehicles to access your personal cloud. You loose your phone or drop it in the toilet, no big deal. You just turn on your TV and all your data is there, even the email you were in the process of typing when your phone fell in the toilet.
TD
Nice. I hope it's not G5 but instead WiDi or WiMax that takes over. No more phone numbers, data/text caps, and convert voice to voip. Oh and free would be nice too.

Definitely a firesale going on, as tablets move to ICS.
The A500 might also be moving away to be replaced by the equivalent A200.
To give you an idea of the value some stores are giving, I've just ordered my A500, which was the 64GB Unit, for $399 CAN. Which is crazy considering a few weeks ago you'd be paying that for the 8GB or 16GB models.

Seems to be the trend. Everyone is gearing up new models for ICS and some are offering them with HC saying ICS ready.
However, I caution everyone on ICS. The architecture is totally different and early hardware along with older hardware will have issues. Does anyone remember buying a computer that had Windows 3.1 but was Windows 98 compatible? Or a Windows 98 computer that was Windows XP compatible? These usually don't offer the performance you'll get if you just wait a few months and many really had serious issues.
So, take advantage of the 'fire sale' going on now and you'll get a great tablet with HC that you can use for a long time. Well, at least long enough to wait for vendors to release ICS and work out the bugs.

This and more of this. People try to buy products that will encourage capability of upgrading, but little do they know, their device will run it very slug like and could frustrate them more than the previous version they had installed.

I wonder what makes you think ICS is "totally different" from 2.x or 3.x ?
My understanding is that it is really isn't changing very much of the honeycomb base for tablets, and is instead just merging that with 2.x style support for phones.
In other words, the only growing pains should be the time it takes apps to develop proper ICS apps that adjust based on tablet vs phone. But there shouldn't be any problems running ICS on our hardware, given that it's basically 3.x.
Is there something I missed?
The A500 is going to be replaced by Acer’s A700 Tablet Detailed: Quad-Core Tegra 3 SoC and 1920x1200 Screen. Just do a search on the web for A700
The lifetime of these products is going to be similar to those of cell phones which is 6 months to a year. Maybe a bit longer.
The business model is all about turnaround, planned obsolescence, consumers buying the next hot product, upgrading at every turn, etc. Just look at some of the signatures everyone has with several models of phones, tablets, etc. listed. Seems the economy is tanked yet everyone is buying electronic products at a furious rate (gotta have priorities).
The A500 is not immune to this paradigm.

Basically put, ICS has a series of new API's that require more horsepower to run. Running this on a earlier version of chip sets not designed for ICS will be sluggish.
Like I've said, I've been using ICS for over 3 months and it runs like a dog on older equipment. Half the time you think it's hung or locked up.

Exactly, follow the money. There is NO money in it. The margins are too tight to spend money and resources on something you've already been paid for. You might not like it, I don't like paying baggage fees at Airports either, but that's the market place.
If you have ever listened to JT (CEO) at ACER and his vision, you'll see exactly what he has told every employee. That ACER's life cycle is 6 months. They plan and build on replacing hardware constantly improving and encouraging customers to upgrade. The second thing, that comes out through him, is the need for ACER to make money on services, the Cloud, and software. Look around and you will see a lot of the tablet MFG's doing the same thing (just like bag fees at airports) they are all doing it.

Did anyone think since it is the holiday season that may be why they are sold out?
Perhaps Acer did not make enough to keep them in supply or the stores did not order enough.
I doubt they would stop selling just because ICS may be an update.
And I doubt they would stop making the 500 until the 700 is close to being available.
But then it is Acer we are talking about and who knows what their thinking is.

Demand is high and they probably did not make enough. But, they also cut back on the A500 production numbers too. So you're probably looking at several reasons. However, the a500, according to ACER personnel has been added to their twilight list. Not sure it twilighted items are 6, 9, or 12 months. It use to mean 12 months with production runs dropping each month after 6.

I can confirm that they are officially discontinued at Best Buy. They will no longer receive any from Acer. Of course there are some stocks at some stores an distribution centers but once they are gone they are gone.

I have to disagree with the statement that ics runs poorly on older devices. I've been running ics without any issues on first generation samsung galaxy s variant for the past couple of months. the speed is one of the main positives with the ics rom. I don't see why a tegra2 based 1gig memory iconia a500 wouldn't be an excellent hardware to go along with ics.

i loaded ICS on my Captivate the other day, and I noticed the same thing. If a single core 1Ghz phone with 512mb ram can run it smoothly, why can't a dual core with 1Gb?
The only official specs I can find is that it will be of similar requirements to honeycomb, with a minimum of 512mb ram.
