Android 2.3. Is there a higher? - Hero, G2 Touch General

What is the highest android version at the mo? Im running 2.3 is there a higher?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA Premium App

Well, Android 2.4(Ice-cream sandwich) has been announced recently. And of course, there are the tablet oriented 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2. But for our poor old Heros, currently it still 2.3.4 (gingerbread) though a 3.0 port is underway by JieeHD (not sure if he is still continuing coz he is concentrating on the SalsaSense port). Hope that helps

There's the Android 3.0 port as Geoworld said.
2.3 is the latest 'usable' version for our phones IMO.

2.3.4 to be precise

maybe htc will not release 2.3...

Wildfire S is 2.4?

So I read on CNET, a preview that the Wildfire S will be running a 2.4 (a bug fixed gingerbread, I think they mean 2.3.3) rather than 2.3 gingerbread when it comes out late spring at a similar price. So its almost time to ditch the wildfire already sigh..... cos face it wildfire screen is simply lame.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire
I did actually read the same. But then, there are conflicting reports. Some sources state that 2.4 is Ice Cream, whereas some say 2.4 is still Gingerbread. Obviously, as far as I know, 2.4 will be Ice Cream, and, in such a case, Wildfire S runs Android 2.3.x Gingerbread.
Ahaa gingerbread hasn't been out for long so I think that google wouldn't release another so quickly. But they have announced it'd be soon.

Android Central: HTC Says 2.3 for DInc This Summer

Android Central has this from a customer that contacted HTC.
The bigger question for me: which version of Sense will it get? (2.0? 2.1? 3.0? something entirely different?)
[Could someone post the link for me, still can't put outside links in]
First off, here's that link you wanted...
Second, if it gets Sense 3.0 I will **** myself. Likely 2.0, but still...
I really like that lockscreen in 3.0.
Also I guess its worth speculating over which gingerbread it will get. The rumors about the Droid X update had 2.3.3, but supposedly 2.4 is in the works.
As i said with Froyo, I'll believe this when I see it.

I think its "impossible" for us to get sense 3.0 because well its built to run on dual core phones as you see only two phones have been "announced" and not "released" that will run sense 3.0 and both have dual core 1.2 ghz processors and i dont think htc would give us sense 2.0 since sense 2.1 is so similar so if we get sense 2.1 or 2.0 it will be 2.1 because of it's similarities and thats only a slim chance that we will get sense 2.1 because we might stick with out original sense which will be very sad but as the other guy said if the incredible gets sense 3.0 i will also **** myself hehe.

Unfortunately, it's official - HTC will not be supporting Sense 3.0 on non-dual core devices. So it's Sense 2.x or bust for us.

I would imagine HTC would port Sense 2.0 to the Incredible, rather than working with Sense 1.0. That being said, I've been wrong before.

And the clarification:
"Clarification: aspects of the latest HTC Sense won’t work on some previous devices. We are working to incorporate other aspects that will"
Perhaps Sense 2.1.1? Or 2.2?
Odds are we will be on sense 2.0. Engadget just posted an article saying that only the newwer phones will get 3.0 so that's a non-issue. HTC did say we will get gingerbread by end of 2nd qt 2011 so we should be good on that.
The big question is... will be it worth unrooting and loading back on all that bloatware for the 2.3 update?
I'm sure a couple of the devs around here will help all of us not make that decision.
We wont be getting Sense 3 thats for sure, but once again I don't really care what we get since I'm rooted and will always have the best stuff available before stock users

I'm concerned that we will get locked from being able to root after the update. I think that happened with the Aria when AT&T pushed out the 2.2 update where the phone was unrootable after that?
Am I mistaken or is this a legit concern? I'm kind of a newbie to the root scene so I could be being a total idiot here.

I could be mistaken, but given that you can set S-off, doesn't that pretty much guarantee that you can always flash a custom recovery and then, flash a rooted ROM?
Besides, even if the update is "unrootable"... I have no doubt that smarter people than I will be able to find a way.

IceCream Sandwich... Is it coming to Desire HD ?

Hi All,
With news humming around that IceCream Sandwich will be out soon ( October Maybe ) Do you think that we will see official update from HTC to Desire HD or they will continue ignoring Desire HD owners and we will go for custom ROM's from developers ??
Images for IceCream Sandwich are already leaked out...

Don't get how the desire hd doesn't have the right specs, if its better than the Nexus S. Unless its the dedicated gpu that it needs.

Official Sense 3.0 Update , I don't know how HTC claims that Desire HD doesn't fit with requirements to run Sense 3.0 while XDA developers brings Full Functional Sense 3.0 to Desire HD in thier ROM's !!!!
Most rumors says that Ice-cream doesn't need hardware changes and it will fit in old devices and comparing Desire HD to Nexus S i think Desire HD is better in Ram and almost equal processor performance !!!!!
Good point about Sense 3.0.
Anyways, I hope there will be support, but it might be too much to ask that we will get any the day ICS comes out. We may be waiting for for some time.
i dont think so................they have already ignored us in updating to sense 3..........................most probably.....officially we wont get it.........
but i am damn sure that XDA will find a way..............
In their official statement i've read at endgadget, "...ice cream sandwich is expected to be backward compatible, universal upgrade that will standardize the Android platform." I forgot where the links are.
8penned from my blazing fast DHD
Keep in mind that Sense 3.0 is HTC's UI on top of Android Gingerbread OS. The new Sense 3.0 devices have more or less the same Gingerbread beneath.
Even if we think Sense 3.0 works okay in ports on the DHD it might not meet HTC's "quality standards" regarding smoothness and stability for example, on a phone that hasn't got the hardware it was meant for. This I think is the reason why we haven't got a Sense 3.0 (yet). Another reason could be that new devices need something special to make people upgrade their old phones and not just update them. HTC might just be holding back the update until they've sold enough new phones.
I'm not saying that I'm sure we'll get Ice Cream but there's a difference in releasing a whole new OS instead of just a UI. A new OS brings much more important and necessary changes (eg security fixes and new features) than a UI. AFAIK Ice Cream will be designed to work even on phones that aren't cutting edge.

I don't think that it will, officially anyway.

This is the problem with Android devices and what gives iPhone more popularity in some markets that Apple support for their devices
3Gs is more than 2 years old and still get support with new iOs till now so this is a good point for it but with Android it's always up to developers community
Icecream Sandwich meant to all devices and tablets so i think that all devices that meet minimum requirements should get it cuz this is the first Android version that will be compatible with both Tablets and Mobiles also with support for new languages like Arabic as example and have better enhancements in it's core so i think that we should get it

How about the Desire that went from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3?
So maybe if we're lucky!
I am honestly not too concerned. As others have stated ports will most probably arrive after the release. And I would honestly rather use a ROM cooked up by one of the talented devs here than the official HTC crew. So far their results have underwhelmed me.
They do however make quality phones that feel good to hold in your hand, and that is what I buy them for. The rest I fix myself. =P

Also this. It's a shame, a real shame. But I suppose if they did not do it this way and kept people interested somehow, they would stop selling phones. I do find it silly though that with the crazy specifications on new phones that a phone like the DHD which I consider a decent phone will be left in the dirt a lot sooner than I had imagined.

After icecream comes jelly bean on android

http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/09/android-jelly-bean/
More likely, it will be something like Jelly Roll instead. Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, FroYo, Gingerbread, ICS (not just Ice Cream as your title states) . . . the naming convention has been following dessert-type items, not just sweets. But then, I was sure the last version would be Gelato.
Also, isn't ICS pretty clearly going to be version 4.0? This source seems to be out of the loop with that, or maybe just being very cautious without formal confirmation.
And, finally, shouldn't this be in the Android General forum?

Just name it 3.0 and have honeycomb (and future tablet versions) numbered under it's current structure.
What are you gonna do have it go from 3.x to 5.x for tablets?

next version?
Kiwi? Wow, good luck.
The new version will bridge the gap between all the differing versions and unite all android under the same OS - phone AND tablet. The new version, out sometime Q4 this year, will be Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

This is what was said at the Google I/O.
9:15 a.m. (Maggie Reardon): Ice Cream Sandwich will allow Google partners to put the OS on all kinds of form factors: phones that flip, tablets, smartphones. One OS that runs everywhere. That's the goal.

I highly doubt there will be official ICS. Huawei doesn't seem to be the best company at giving updates to our phones. Still no gingerbread and you guys are talking about official ICS.
EDIT: People should also read the forums rules. Development forum is only for rom, kernel etc development. So if you are not developing anything you should put these in the general section of the forum.
What is needed to be done to get the 3.0 kernel to this phone?
with custom roms supported.... k?

yes, right...
Then, as soon as the code comes we will be able to know which phones can take it.
It is my assumption that the U8800 will have some minor problems with it, if ram is an issue.I find no problems with the hardware though. If ICS has hardware acceleration on the browser and UI, our GPU can take it.I find no reason not tofcourse we will have to see what happens with the drivers, and what we need to change.
I am positive though.
Huawei Forums;
Senior Vice President of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Yu Chengdong: I see some friends who use the old product U8800 asking if 2.2 can upgrade to 2.3 version as their expectations and concerns. Huawei's mobile phone R&D focus to a more leading ICS 4.0 version, with the fastest speed for the main products directly to upgrade to 4.0, for which cannot be upgraded to 4.0 will also be upgraded to 2.3, unless some of the hardware capabilities are limited. However, Vision Honor and other new models provide the first public version 2.3, and then will be the fastly upgraded to version 4.0!
ideos x5
Vague bull***t... :/ Whats that suppossed to mean? After all these months of waiting for the "october relase of gingerbread" now we'll have to wait for a (probably fictional) upgrade straight to 4.0?

On this site, it says all newer devices HAVE to have the latest update for the first 18 months after they go on sale. I think our u8800 is new enough. (In Estonia available at August, announced in December 2010 worldwide?)
And, Open Handset Alliance members are here, as you can see, Huawei is there.
And I read somewhere that ICS should support >1 year old devices, so even if we don't get the official port, we'll get a custom one hopefully.
would be great to have ICS to x5
