Hi All,
With news humming around that IceCream Sandwich will be out soon ( October Maybe ) Do you think that we will see official update from HTC to Desire HD or they will continue ignoring Desire HD owners and we will go for custom ROM's from developers ??
Images for IceCream Sandwich are already leaked out...

I don't think that we will get 2.4 officially, but I know that the sensation will get it 100%, and the great devs will bring it to us! that's my point of view.

Offical update? Unlikely, especially if the DHD does not meet the hardware requirements.
or they will continue ignoring Desire HD owners

I'm curious. How did HTC ignore DHD owners? We have the latest updates, after all.
Don't get how the desire hd doesn't have the right specs, if its better than the Nexus S. Unless its the dedicated gpu that it needs.

Official Sense 3.0 Update , I don't know how HTC claims that Desire HD doesn't fit with requirements to run Sense 3.0 while XDA developers brings Full Functional Sense 3.0 to Desire HD in thier ROM's !!!!
Most rumors says that Ice-cream doesn't need hardware changes and it will fit in old devices and comparing Desire HD to Nexus S i think Desire HD is better in Ram and almost equal processor performance !!!!!
Good point about Sense 3.0.
Anyways, I hope there will be support, but it might be too much to ask that we will get any the day ICS comes out. We may be waiting for for some time.
i dont think so................they have already ignored us in updating to sense 3..........................most probably.....officially we wont get it.........
but i am damn sure that XDA will find a way..............
In their official statement i've read at endgadget, "...ice cream sandwich is expected to be backward compatible, universal upgrade that will standardize the Android platform." I forgot where the links are.
8penned from my blazing fast DHD
Keep in mind that Sense 3.0 is HTC's UI on top of Android Gingerbread OS. The new Sense 3.0 devices have more or less the same Gingerbread beneath.
Even if we think Sense 3.0 works okay in ports on the DHD it might not meet HTC's "quality standards" regarding smoothness and stability for example, on a phone that hasn't got the hardware it was meant for. This I think is the reason why we haven't got a Sense 3.0 (yet). Another reason could be that new devices need something special to make people upgrade their old phones and not just update them. HTC might just be holding back the update until they've sold enough new phones.
I'm not saying that I'm sure we'll get Ice Cream but there's a difference in releasing a whole new OS instead of just a UI. A new OS brings much more important and necessary changes (eg security fixes and new features) than a UI. AFAIK Ice Cream will be designed to work even on phones that aren't cutting edge.

I don't think that it will, officially anyway.
The DHD went from Froyo to Gingerbread, where as i think the Sensation will go from Gingerbread to IceCream Sandwich.

I agree that. More than a 2 official updates of Android ver. on device that it`s not branded by google (Nexus) it`s not for hope.. but there will be many cust. roms based on Icecream for sure
but i think there wont be any ARHD rom based on ice cream sandwich........
and that makes me sad ...........

This is the problem with Android devices and what gives iPhone more popularity in some markets that Apple support for their devices
3Gs is more than 2 years old and still get support with new iOs till now so this is a good point for it but with Android it's always up to developers community
Icecream Sandwich meant to all devices and tablets so i think that all devices that meet minimum requirements should get it cuz this is the first Android version that will be compatible with both Tablets and Mobiles also with support for new languages like Arabic as example and have better enhancements in it's core so i think that we should get it

I think the last update for our dhd is 2.3.3 thats the final and major update some other phone like samsung tab still getting 2.3.3 at the moment so i think this is our last update... Thats why it is open source and its up to developer to make run to our dhd...

How about the Desire that went from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3?
So maybe if we're lucky!
I am honestly not too concerned. As others have stated ports will most probably arrive after the release. And I would honestly rather use a ROM cooked up by one of the talented devs here than the official HTC crew. So far their results have underwhelmed me.
They do however make quality phones that feel good to hold in your hand, and that is what I buy them for. The rest I fix myself. =P

Also this. It's a shame, a real shame. But I suppose if they did not do it this way and kept people interested somehow, they would stop selling phones. I do find it silly though that with the crazy specifications on new phones that a phone like the DHD which I consider a decent phone will be left in the dirt a lot sooner than I had imagined.

Technically all the Android powered devices capable of running of Android Gingerbread will be able to run Android 4.0 ICS but Practically all devices may not give an overall good user experience . So all the manufactures are reviewing ICS on their devices to check the user experience and will release the latest OS according to the results.
HTC's list of devices that will surely get ICS :
* HTC Sensation (XL,XE,Original)
* HTC EVO 3D
* HTC Incredible S
* HTC Desire HD
* HTC Flyer
* HTC Rhyme
* HTC Desire S
* HTC Salsa
* HTC Desire Z
* Google Nexus One

HTC Sense
As you are already aware that HTC Sense is the best UI on Android till date. With the Android ICS around the corner we are thinking of taking HTC Sense to a whole new level.
Re-designed, Re-vamped, Smoother and even more user friendly HTC Sense 4.0 coming with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Any suggestions you would like us to work on?

@hamdir are you saying thte dhd will get official ics?
"The just-unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android (aka Android 4.0) may not be coming to some of HTC’s best-selling smarties, a statement from the phone-maker suggests.
Google lifted the lid on the new iteration of its platform yesterday. Melding the choicest features of the Honeycomb tablet-optimised version with the Gingerbread edition for smartphones, Ice Cream Sandwich brings a smart new multi-tasking interface with slicker notifications and widgets to Android phones, as well as revamped takes on native apps.
But if you’re an HTC Android phone owner, you’d best not get too excited just yet."
According to:
http://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/news...ream_sandwich_ruled_out_for_htc_desire_range/
That sounds promising actually: HTC won't release the update to those devices "if it feels an update would compromise their usability." I don't see any reason why it should, but even if they don't release it that sounds like they'll be testing it so there's sure to be leaked test ROMs to play with.

Since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this week, HTC has been looking closely at the new OS's features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. We're a recognized industry leader in providing fast and consistent upgrades to our Android devices (see what Engadget had to say about our upgrades: http://engt.co/qMb9nQ), and Ice Cream Sandwich will be no different.
Upgrades require a careful balance of hardware and software to ensure the best possible performance and usability, so please stay tuned as we assess our product portfolio. Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible and we'll be sharing details on specific devices and timing in the coming weeks!
Thanks!

will have to wait for a few weeks to see if the DHD is in the update list till then flash away keep the hope and for me and some other fellows puff on the herb
Well HTC uses the same chip for all their android line up. I guess it wouldn't be so hard for them to update majority of their phones unlike samsung, moto, LG that uses tegra, TI, Exynos and qualcomm. i am still hoping that our DHDs will get the official update.

well i honestly think that the Desire HD is the most powerful device among the 1Ghz single core phones in terms of GPU and RAM and all others it is very powerful...if HTC will say ICS will compromise the performance of the device i think it's only a marketing strategy and the DEVS will prove it

Agreed - I think the high end phones like the DHD will run ICS without a problem. It's still high end, if you compare its CPU/GPU/RAM with other devices. However the mid-range phones won't, and I'd expect HTC to be conservative about their decisions there.
All the same, once the cooks get going, I think the ROMs will be even better than HTC standard

really glad to hear samsung listen to their customers!
I agree that an official update from Samsung for our gtab would be most welcome. However, by the time any of us see this update (seeing as this obviously wasn't originally on Samsung's radar and the snail like pace with which carriers provide updates) I'm pretty sure that the awesome dev's we have working on CM9 and the ICS team will be able to provide something much sexier, making the update moot for many that follow those threads.
Still though, nice to see that Samsung is considering not throwing year old adopters under the bus (yet!)
Hello,
That could be a great news once confirmed by Samsung.
I'm sure the devs here will make it even better once the first official roms (even an alpha) get leaked. The community has already a "spy" at Samsung, Cyanogenmod founder

Another things is that the Sensation XL will be released "soon after" the Sensation. So we will probably be getting custom ROM's based off Runnymede before the official one is released!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Good news, everyone!
finally its happening!!!
but i think that as always the cooked ROMS will be batter than the source
Why is everyone suprised!!
HTC is supporting devices up to 18 months of release, the DHD was sold on OCT 2010, furthermore we have enough evidence now of continuous support to their devices
the classic Desire: Eclair > Froyo > Gingerbread || it stops here because of the slow S1 and bottle-necked internal Memory
the DHD: Froyo > Gingerbread 2.3.3 sense 2.1 > Gingerbread 2.3.5 Sense 3.0 > upcoming ICS
Three major android updates! the only surprising part in this is actually our latest Sense 3.0 update which was unexpected, if you look at the Sensation and EVO3D both devices are still officially on the old slow QHD Sense 3.0, the Sensation has many leaked test firmwares including GB sense 3.5 and the beautiful ICS sense 3.6 but officially users are still waiting
and actually EVO3D owners received this as bad news, since they are slated to receive the ICS update in the same time frame as DHD owners given that the EVO3D is highend almost a twin the Sensation sans 3D, it's not really fair to make them wait
The EVO3D situation can be explained, i think it didn't sell so well, while the DHD is their biggest selling Android device so far, still being produced and sold, i doubt they will upset all it's users
as for Desire S owners saying DHD owners are lucky?! why the DHD/DesireS/IncredibleS are twins and we have been receiving the same updates, like the recent Sense 3.0 update
I've seen posts for the last few months with people nagging and saying its impossible ICS will come to DHD, XDA should make a sticky saying, yes people believe it already HTC currently offers the best Android updates/support
If Samsung made such announcement then i would be surprised!
I'm hoping the RCMIX3D team comeback and cook an ICS rom for the DHD.
Greg.

That's why I really in love with my DHD and sold my Nexus S even after it received official ICS update and several good quality custom ROM based on official ICS (but I don't care, after all vanilla Android is really boring anyways even for ICS, HTC Sense is so much better, trust me ).
I guess that this would be the last major update (ICS 4.0) release by HTC. If HTC decides to release a new firmware beyond ICS, it would be a pleasant surprise for us and that time we will say it's time for DHD to go and welcome a new generation of DHD. ;-)

you honestly can not expect more support from HTC after a stable ICS, 4 major software update including 3 major android updates! no other manufacturer matches this!
The new generation of DHD is here, it will be announced on the 25th!
Their commitment in releasing ICS has definetely locked me into getting HTC all the way.
I mean , Motorola phones definetely has superior build,but their after market support sucks so much you can't even get BEYOND 1 major update for a phone. Don't even talk about Samsung....

HTC didn't announce ICS update, despite its brothers getting it.
We assumed it was hardware limitations with the smaller RAM (512mb)
But now HTC have announced the new HTC One V with ICS and Sense 3.6/4.0.
And guess what? It only has 512mb aswell.
So RAM can't be the issue. Maybe CPU power?

I think Nospin is right; commitment to the development of Android varies among different manufacturers. Commitment to profit does not. There is limited upside to them providing an upgrade. Chances are, we'll still purchase the next HTC phone when we get the money and/or discounted price with contract from our carriers, despite them choosing not to upgrade our phones. In other words, why provide us with an additional free service, when they're going to get our money in the future anyway. In fact, providing the upgrade might *deter* us from buying their latest and greatest.

That's cause the Desire HD IS a flagship device.
But I hope so, we will get custom ICS from HTC ONE V. I think it will be brilliant
I don't think the desire z will get a OTA update either. I think they plan it this way so that we have to upgrade and won't be content on sticking it out with our old devices. Either way the desire z will get ICS from cm9 most likely. It's taken longer then I wanted but I know it's in the works.
Just use Andromadus. I know it's not official, but you can rock it now. Which counts for a lot.

If this was Samsung, then I would agree with the Desire Z getting ICS. However HTC has already given us an unlocked bootloader as well as the source code for the Desire Z. There's no need for HTC to get involved anymore. This is exactly why places like XDA are important to the rest of us who "knows" our devices are still kicking strong because then we can just do the work ourselves. And besides, even if Desire Z does get an ICS update: the majority of us will still prefer Custom ROMs anyways. This way, everybody wins. HTC maintains a healthy reputation with us and we get to save some money.
heh, by "we", I mean the talented devs that still support our devices. I'm personally useless.

I agree, I think there would be two benefits of having ICS come officially to Desire Z / G2. First would be that that ROM would be a lot easier to modify and tinker with by the dev's then what they are working with currently. The second benefit would be in the form of less people asking for eta's on cm9. I would rather use a custom version of a rom than a stock rom, but the same doesn't go for everybody. I bet a lot of the traffic on xda is people just wanting ICS on their device period.

Its always hard to find out the type of camera is on what phone.. the only thing i could find for the One V camera is that it is also a 5MP camera. (Secretly hoping it has the same sensors as ours )
Anyways to get back on the ICS for DZ. I still would like to have it for this phone only because it will have a rotating launcher..

Wasn't HTC saying that they're using some kind of new "imaging chip" for enhancing their photos with their new lineup?
Also, did the Desire Z ever get an update to Sense 3.0?

ICS is coming to both the Desire HD and Desire S, both of which use the same chipset (including camera chip) as our phone. So the problem should be solved soon (One V probably won't be out much sooner, if at all).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
If some developer port kernel from desire hd then probably we will have full working ICS with sense ui. Port from Desire HD is easy.

Hum, that's good!
It’s been nearly two years since HTC first announced the Desire HD, making it a proper dinosaur in the smartphone world. Despite its age, the manufacturer had been planning to give the smartphone a fresh new start with an Ice Cream Sandwich update. At least, that was the plan, but now it seems that HTC may have reversed course, and the Desire HD won’t be seeing an official ICS release, after all.
Back in May, we saw a list of which HTC models were due their ICS updates, and when; the Desire HD fell in the July-August range. We’d assume that was still the case, were it not for Canadian carrier Telus updating its own list of future software releases, noting that the Desire HD’s Ice Cream Sandwich release is now canceled. According to the carrier, “HTC has [canceled] the HTC Desire HD ICS upgrade due to poor device performance during testing.”
That’s a little surprising, because even with just a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon, the phone’s 768MB of RAM sounds sufficient for ICS operation, even if it might be a little pokey in spots. Apparently HTC just felt that the performance issues were too great to ignore; maybe Sense simply got in the way too much.
We haven’t heard any update from HTC itself on the Desire HD’s prospects, but if this really is the case in Canada, we can’t imagine things will be different elsewhere.

Are you kidding me? If you really had to post a thread about this, you could have posted it in general. Not in the development section.

First of all, wrong section.
Second of all, you'll notice that their source is actually from an XDA thread, this one. (And seeing that the linked page is the one that contains my post I guess I'm the source )
However, an XDA user contacted HTC on their Facebook page (link to post) and got the following answer:
Tom - volunteer helper said:
HTC are not cancelling their upgrade to ICS for the Desire HD as far as we know. If Telus have done this, it's unilateral on their part.

That's mentioned in the thread linked above, and that thread also contains an email reply that a different user received after emailing HTC's support and the email said that the update is still happening.
My guess is that HTC were hoping to get the upgrade ready by now, they got issues so they postponed the release, and some kind of miscommunication happened between them and Telus.
Either way, we're still in the first quarter of the time range HTC gave for the upgrade. So unless HTC makes an official statement that there won't be a release, then there's no reason to despair.
i wanted to share this with you all
so ppl can talk about it
we are here to inform and help each other
if this is not the proper place im sorry
i hope this is BS
we all want to see something more in this device

You should quote the 11072012.

Who knows the one of 18072012?
Also today, Telus launched the One X. Hmmm.

Sorry to be slightly off topic, but HTC never mentioned the Inspire 4G to get Ice Cream Sandwich, despite it being the AT&T version of the Desire HD.
Do you think the Inspire will get ICS?

HTC, unfortunately, has no control over the devices chosen to get an upgrade. HTC may make software that is for a device, but the carrier may say no. Sadly, ATT has deemed the Inspire to be End-Of-Line, and will receive no future updates. GB was the last, and final update.
if the new Desire C can run ICS and new Sense on a measly 600Mhz processor, the desire HD certainly can too
Android 4 Life
Desire HD will get ICS, if the Incredible S with the exact same specs is getting it too, then it would be trivial for HTC to do the same for the DHD.

Well I can understand HTC Inspire will don't get ICS, but what's app with Desire HD?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
one I do not believe Telus will not upgrade it. If they do not, I will be organizing a petition against them plus they will be getting some nasty phone calls. Plus I have a neighbour that works for Telus (but does not work in mobile) but I will ask him for help with this also.
There is no reason for the Telus Desire HD not to get it, it is not at the end of life, so there should be no reason. I think someone at Telus posted this because they know we are all waiting for it
Also shouldn't this be in general, and not development
Edit: I can not even see the phone on Telus site anymore (does this mean end of life)
Some interesting info

Yeah, kinda raging at people who're getting all pissy about it. Look on the official site and you'll see it says that by the end of August we'll have ICS w/ Sense

Is there maybe a chance that we get Jelly Bean immediately instead of ICS?
or other question, if vodafone got the rom from HTC already so vodafone can customize it, shouldnt there be the original HTC rom already be available?
