I've been having a few issues with a couple of games freezing and have also had the phone get quite hot, particularly around the camera end. The two games I've had freeze up a lot are Fruit Slice and Pinball Classic, neither are spectacular graphics wise. Basically the games just freeze up and either I'm ejected to the home screen or I have to power off/restart. Occasionally I do get the "Force Close" box, but not very often, this contrary to what I would expect if it were just a normal bug related issue. sometimes it crashes after 5 mins or so, other times straight away. What makes me think it might be overheating is that once it does freeze up, it will do so again almost instantly if I relaunch. The rest of the phone seems okay in operation, I've run a few benchmarks and stress tests, all run okay so far. However (and it is a BIG however), once the phone has got warm, if I go to adjust my screen brightness I am limited to how high I can raise it and receive the following message: "To avoid overheating, maximum brightness has been reduced" (I've attached a screen print below).
Does anybody else get these issues or that message?
Got that "To avoid overheating..." message too while using Navigon Mobile Navigator inside my car (attached to charger).
In some other post I also read about a message like "To avoid overheating, the charging process has been paused", but this depends on the temperature of the battery only (I think).
Regarding the crashing games, that might be a problem of the game. But I had some crashing games, too, but I could not find a relation to the temperature of the phone.
Anyway, it could still be a heat problem.
In my opinion it would had be better for samsung to make the phone some mm thicker to better deal with heat and including a more powerful battery than just claiming to have the thinnest superphone.
Anyway, its still a great device.
Useful to hear it happens on other handsets, in fact I've now found a few threads talking about the issue happening on other models of samsung phone, such as the Infuse.
On the crashing games front, would you mind trying out Fruit Slice for a bit, to see if it hangs on you? If it dosen't crash after 10 mins or so I would think you're okay.
about overheating
i did experience it
when i left the phone in the car it became very hot and i get the same message

I'll try that as soon as I have it back (and if I remember to test), its currently at the repair facility because of a faulty camera.

Cheers, really appreiated. Just to update, I played it again just now, managed 3 games before it froze and kicked me out to the home screen; again no crash dialoge asking force close/wait?! I also checked my temp immediatly after it crashed, using Stability Test V1.5, it reported 31c, which dosen't sound too hot from what I've heard...who knows, cheers agian though!

sorry about the double post
Okay, I've been playing now about 15+ minutes without any problem. The phone doesnt get even hot, just a little bit warm. Using Navigon Navigator it gets a LOT more hotter.
So maybe you should try a factory reset? Or its a faulty phone...
By the way, I had display brightness set to Auto and I'm on german KE7 firmware.

My galaxy S freezes out of the blue, and i can't even turn it off. Sometimes i look to check the time, and noticed the phone is turned off. Both problems are only corrected by taking out the battery, and putting it back in...and then waiting for it to happen again!
Is this a software issue that 2.2 will fix? Should I exchange for a new one, or will all of them have the same problems, if bought from the same place? (Best Buy in Vancouver Canada)
either your battery is not good, or your got a defective phone
the new SGS out of the box works smooth
what is your firmware version?
type in
*#*#1234#*#*
Sounds like a bad phone. I got mine from one touch in delta and it has been perfect. Return asap and get yourself a working unit.

Thought you meant lag. Mine lags a lot (stock firmware) and sometimes "freezing" seems the word.
But no, that's not it. Perhaps you can try a hard reset and check your sdcard too, something isn't ok.
I'm actually experiencing the same issue. My phone goes black and seems to be happening more in low wireless connection areas. Like in a mall. With the the *# code I get I9000UGJG9.
if you have LAG issues, install the one click lag fix in the development area
problem solved
Its not LAG issues it a complete freeze issue. My phone goes black like standby mode and will not come out of it. The only fix is a battery pull or holding the power button for 6 seconds. The same issue as the op.

that is a factory defect
take it back, exchange it for a good one
this latest firmware is really good, you should not see anything like that
Allright will do. I figured as much I didn't want to bring it back I already purchased some apps. Guess I'll have to wait for my store to get some.

you do not lose the Apps
once you log back into your Gmail account in your new phone, when you go into Android Market, they will remain in the Download section
those apps are saved in your Gmail account, not in the phone.
that's the cool thing about the android phones
so if you ever switch to say an HTC Android, or a Nokia Android, you can still re-install those apps (assuming they are compatible)
Oh sweet I wasn't aware of that. I sold a couple of the Galaxy S and I'm the only one with this issue as of yet. Hopefully it isn't a common one. I've been trying my best to convert Iphone buyers in most cases when I'm sold out to get this phone I just hope it delievers for my customers and they won't have the same issue as me.
Are u futzing with oclocking or changing CPU mode ? This causes hangs with black screen

I believe this same thing just happened to me. Plug in my phone to recharge it (got it 2 days ago, so the battery still runs out quick) then tried to activate it and Lock screen wouldn't disappear when sliding.

you do know you don't just slide
you have to move the entire picture of the "slide" out of the phone frame for it to unlock
if you say only slide it partially, it will just bounce back and remain locked.
if you have thick fingers it wont work properly
you might be better off using the 3rd party unlock screens, specially the kinds that needs no sliding.
i have that issues nowadays too. randomly "freezes" on the black screen, i can call through my phone (ringing) but there's no notification / vibration or anything or sorts.
the only way is to reboot the phone and it'll randomly happen again after some time >.> and the call that i've just missed isn't showing on the call-log either.
i hope it gets better overtime or i'll just have to reflash!
ps. was fine before i tweaked my cpu settings in sleep mode, you might wanna disable that if you're using it.
Mine has the same problem and by the looks of things a lot of people have this issue. I called customer support and after sometime the rep admitted this and said it will be fixed in next build however I doubt that
Then there are probably lots of diff units out there. The phone shouldn't freeze unless you are using a beta/alpha firmware (pretty unlikely - i've tested more than 10 different firmwares without a freeze), or set the core clock of the cpu to a higher & unstable frequency (OC). people claim that their phone can do 1.2ghz - that's nice, but each chip has a different capability.
Hi All,
I have got my Ideos X5 for about 2,5 weeks now and at first everything was fine. I had a battery life of about 2 full days, made it 3 days once! The response was quick and everthing was as I wanted it.
The last week however when i scroll in my menu, it's not fluent anymore, switching from screens (left and right) is not fluent anymore and i am unable to remove widgets from my homescreen. This is because when i press the widget (if you do it long enough you should be able to place it in the garbage can) it only holds it a for a fraction and then it drops it again, or it simply loads the program. Angry birds simply crashes after like 5-10 games for another example. When i do a quadrant test at that moment, it scores like 1000.
Now the strange thing is: this is not all the time. Sometimes it has these problems, sometimes it works fluently, no problems, no crashes, quadrant of 1400.
I tried to find out if it was a particular application that was running that caused it, but i ended every application that i've downloaded so far and it still occurs.
Anyone have any idea what it could be and how to solve the problem?
Tnx!
What Rom are you running?
I use the stock os.
build number: V100R001c00b135sp01
custom version: Custdeuc253d001
so i guess B135?
Hi all, quick update. I think i might have found the answer to my problems.... I downloaded this battery app earlier and i removed it now. This night cost 0% battery (earlier it sometimes cost 30%) and angry birds didn't crash even though i played for like an hour and alle screens work fluently again. Lets hope it stays that way! (otherwise i'll be back )

Every battery saving app is oNLY for stupid people who don't know what is their phone and how to lower brighness or disable GPS. Apps CAN NOT make any difference in battery life, only shorting it. Cause it's again only just one more app running in background and using phone resources - and it's from battery.
Hello guys, hope I can get an idea here to solve a problem, i'm at the end of my hopes.
So, I got an unlocked EU HD2, been using it with Android mainly. Some months ago the touchscreen broke, I got it changed under warranty.
Since it came back the phone freezes under heavy load the image is stuck on screen, hardware keys don't react if I press them and if there was any audio playing at the moment of the freeze i hear a buzzing sound (possibly the last of the audio buffer playing back constantly).
By "heavy load" I mean flash, Youtube streaming, games (jelly defense) sometimes offline video playback, google maps specially when caching areas for offline use, when GPS locking. It's not CPU load it seams but high current drain load possibly (CPU stress test runs for long times without issues).
I mentioned possible heat related cause because if the phone freezes and I reboot right away it freezes again quite shortly but if i let it cool down and then boot up it takes longer for it to freeze.
This appears in multiple android builds, it is more frequent on ICS builds (or it seems under high GPU use), appears in WM6 also but less frequent.
I got the phone back to stock state and sent it back to service with the information above (minus anything android related) and they sent it back saying the problem did not manifest. Indeed in WM6 with stock software it seems that there is not much that can stress it enough.
The phone itself does not get noticeably hotter than before touchscreen replacement but the screen itself seems to heat up less, it might be that it used ti dissipate some of the heat before.
So anyone got a clue if there is something I could do ? I'm willing to take the phone apart to solve the problem but not without a clear plan in mind.
It is an already well-known problem with CPU heating failure probably because of BGA balls between motherboard and CPU.
The only long-lasting solution is replacement of motherboard, unfortunately...
Thanks for the info.
Alas, no good news, was hoping it may be a heat dissipation problem. I wonder then how this may have appeared after touch screen replacement.

Maybe a coincidence, maybe not...
There is a thread with some methods of heat dissipation improvement posted by facdemol, maybe it'll help you...
For reference it's this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982454
I'll check the methods there and i'll be back with update.
EDIT:
Issue pointed out is much too similar to mine, no need to keep another thread open, will get my answers there.

Hello everbody,
bought 2 weeks ago the Nexus 4 16GB and I'm very happy with it.
But i have the problem, that the device restarts when it is under load, means i play or watch something what needs
the full power of the CPU and GPU.
It happens a lot when i play Iron Man 3 The Official Game or Dead Trigger.
Than the device freezes, can't kill the app or even lock the screen and after 10~ seconds it reboots itself.
Active Wifi, Bluetooth, 3G or not doesn't make any difference.
The only strange thing is, what i discovered after a few crashes, is that the battery gauge stands still before the crash and after the reboot the gauge drops to it assumed level.
Screenshot as attachment.
System: Android 4.3 Stock (with this last mini patch from last week)
Does anyone have a idea how i can fix this?
I tried, to charge the battery while android is off and to turn android at 100% on, but this doesn't help.
Sincerely,
GTrash81

Did you undervolt the CPU?
If this is happening without rooting/etc... then I would definitely get a replacement. It sounds like the processor is overheating and causing a reboot rather than throttling.
Today i checked if the device is getting too hot.
But after 2 minutes playing Iron Man, by 9°C outside (i was on the way to the city, waiting for the train), it rebooted.
So i started the game, deactivated the display and put it on the table. After 4 hours i checked the game and played over 10 minutes without a crash.
So what i think is, that these two don't like Trim (most new feature with 4.3) or the are badly programmed and must reload/refresh objects while playing and Trim must work to clear temporary files.
And they are badly programmed, because i red at the developers page, that a few other people have the same problems.
So excuse me for wasting your time. But hey, to err is human.
Sincerely,
GTrahs81
Hey I just got my Z4. Upgraded from a Z2 Play. I bought direct from Motorola off their website. I'm having really strange 2D performance issues, and was wondering if anyone else is having similar issues because they seem outright stupid for a phone as beefy as this one is to be doing this.
OK, so, this is going to sound super vague because I did try to nail it down with a ctrace, but wasn't able to come up with anything conclusive.
Sometimes, when drawing 2D only, my phone will drop to 30fps or lower. This happens in both in the launcher/normal apps and games (Fire Emblem Heroes)
However, when the phone is drawing in 3D (Dragalia Lost) the phone never drops below 60fps, ever, for any reason.
I have tried the developer option to force 2D Drawing on the GPU. This does not change the behavior at all.
This happens regardless of what MotoMod I have attached (None, Car Dock, Projector, 360 Camera)
This seems really weird to me. The phone isn't getting hot. It happens both plugged in and unplugged. Fresh reboots and not. What's interesting about this is it's exactly the opposite of my Z2 Play, which Dragalia F***ing hated (It would run fine for anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, and then it would crash) but FEH would run fine on, and never ever have issues, ever, even if the phone hadn't been rebooted in like, 3 months. And the Z2 Play is just generally a weaker, crappier device in every way (Except Ram, I had the 64gb/4gb model of the Z2 Play) than the Z4, I kind of "expect" the Z4 to just do everything the Z2 did but better.
I'm not a particularly heavy user (I upgraded from my Z2 Play because the battery was expanding, not because it was insufficient) and both of the games mentioned are the only things I do on my phone that could be considered to "Push" the phone in any way (Push in quotes because Dragalia and FEH are both REALLY light games.)
Has anyone else noticed any strangeness like this?
I have the same issue, and yes, it's really hard to describe and difficult to determine what causes it.
What it actually looks like to me is that the digitizer randomly goes into a powersaving mode and samples input at a lower frequency. When scrolling through any app, if you hold your finger down, it'll make it look like it's running at 30fps or less. But if you fling a page that can scroll, for the most part the scrolling animation will be full 60fps.
I know for certain that if you reboot the phone, you're more likely to trigger it soon after boot. But, if you suffer through the agonizing experience, the phone will eventually fix itself for the next week or so before it happens again.
Here's the weird part, not everyone is affected by the weird performance. My theory is most people can't detect it or don't care, or there's a particular app that is prompting the digitizer to behave badly. No idea what it is though.

It's definitely not the digitizer though! I have some data! Fire Emblem Heroes has an autobattle mode, This is as likely to happen during an autobattle when I am providing no input (Phone sitting on desk/just watching while holding) as it is when I'm scrolling through my list of apps.
Same problem here, pretty sluggish experience compared to my girlfriend's G7 Plus.
I've noticed that since the latest update, this issue has gone away for me. Anyone else confirm?
I don't think it was the update, but certain apps seem to exaggerate performance issues. I fixed mine by marking Pokemon Go (the only 3d game I play), as "Restricted" under battery usage settings.
I've been testing this configuration for about 2 days now and it looks like that solved it.
Just to set the record straight, the Android 10 update fixed the random performance problems that have plagued the device so far. There is some hitching right after a reboot, but if you let the phone settle, it's fine until the next reboot.
