Hello guys, hope I can get an idea here to solve a problem, i'm at the end of my hopes.
So, I got an unlocked EU HD2, been using it with Android mainly. Some months ago the touchscreen broke, I got it changed under warranty.
Since it came back the phone freezes under heavy load the image is stuck on screen, hardware keys don't react if I press them and if there was any audio playing at the moment of the freeze i hear a buzzing sound (possibly the last of the audio buffer playing back constantly).
By "heavy load" I mean flash, Youtube streaming, games (jelly defense) sometimes offline video playback, google maps specially when caching areas for offline use, when GPS locking. It's not CPU load it seams but high current drain load possibly (CPU stress test runs for long times without issues).
I mentioned possible heat related cause because if the phone freezes and I reboot right away it freezes again quite shortly but if i let it cool down and then boot up it takes longer for it to freeze.
This appears in multiple android builds, it is more frequent on ICS builds (or it seems under high GPU use), appears in WM6 also but less frequent.
I got the phone back to stock state and sent it back to service with the information above (minus anything android related) and they sent it back saying the problem did not manifest. Indeed in WM6 with stock software it seems that there is not much that can stress it enough.
The phone itself does not get noticeably hotter than before touchscreen replacement but the screen itself seems to heat up less, it might be that it used ti dissipate some of the heat before.
So anyone got a clue if there is something I could do ? I'm willing to take the phone apart to solve the problem but not without a clear plan in mind.
It is an already well-known problem with CPU heating failure probably because of BGA balls between motherboard and CPU.
The only long-lasting solution is replacement of motherboard, unfortunately...
Thanks for the info.
Alas, no good news, was hoping it may be a heat dissipation problem. I wonder then how this may have appeared after touch screen replacement.

Maybe a coincidence, maybe not...
There is a thread with some methods of heat dissipation improvement posted by facdemol, maybe it'll help you...
For reference it's this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982454
I'll check the methods there and i'll be back with update.
EDIT:
Issue pointed out is much too similar to mine, no need to keep another thread open, will get my answers there.

I just got an HD2 and installed SlingPlayer and SPB TV on it.
If I run either of these video streaming apps for more then about 5 minutes, the HD2 will blank and it will restart/reboot.
I am not 100% certain, but it seems this problem only happens when I am using a wireless 3G conntection. If I use a wifi connection, it hasnt rebooted yet.
The only thing I can think of is that the 3G radio section is heating up the HD2 by the heavy data flow of the streaming video (and wifi doesn't generate the same amount of heat), and when it gets to a certain level of heat, one of the components fail due to the heat and the phone reboots.
Has anyone else had this issue, or do I just happen to have a defective unit?

it´s the heat, Buddy, it´s the heat ........... happens to mine also since ambient temps are above 30 °C with all apps calling for 3G and/or HSPA connection or running data-intensive apps like copilot ........
Got no answer form HTC supprot since 5 days concerning the heat problem ...........
I´m fed up ..............
see my topic about the same problem; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676983
i also thought it was the heat, but eventually it was a faulty mainboard

That is the EXACT same problem I am having - thanks for the info!
Hi everybody. I got my hd2 second hand and it doesn't have a warranty. My phones seems to have a faulty temperature sensor. Is there any way to disable the sensor by software? Or even manually would be great. I don't mind opening the phone since it isn't really useable in it's current condition. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Dang, I was hoping someone had a fix
Can you describe the problem a bit more. My Hd2 has overheated but is completely usable.(happens when charging and watching movies /a lot of YouTube)
Sent from my HTC Hd2 using XDA App
Hi, I have tried running wm6, android, and wp7. Starting from room temperature my phone usually works for 10-15 minutes before locking up and I have to take the battery out. The battery does not feel warm, only the lower portion of the phone. After the phone sits for 5 minutes or so I can put the battery back in and turn it on. Holding the phone it barely feels warm.
I don't know on witch radio version you are now but I have had some equal problems in the past, and by changing my radio the problem was solved. lately I'm on Radio 2.15.50 (all is okay now) but previously when i was on radio 2.14.50 and 2.12.50 I had this issue.
Thanks. I'll give it a try. Hopefully changing the radio will help
Had nothing to do with your battery, that's your processor heating up. Install set cpu
It depends also what you call overheating.
It's normal than the phone become hot in some conditions (GPS, ...).
This was also stated on the HTC website when they launched the HD2.
Hi,
I recently sent my HD2 for repair, because it had heat issues and GPS couldn't get a lock. Now I've got my HD2 back, but when I try to use the GPS, it either doesn't find signal at all or when I use for example Google Maps or TomTom, it causes the phone to reboot. I've used the QuickGPS software to get a faster lock, but this doesn't resolve the issue.
Also the heat issues still exist. Whenever I wan't to watch videos etc., the device heats up a lot and causes the phone to reboot. The bottom of the device gets always very hot.
The service center did change the touch screen, chassis and installed "HotFix-update", but these didn't solve anything. Does this mean, that the service center changed wrong parts? What actually can cause heat and GPS freezing/rebooting issues?
I'm now using stock WinMo 6.5 and the ROM version is WWE 3.14 and the radio version is 2.15.50.14.
Watching video or any activity that constantly uses the screen also uses a lot of battery power and it will get very warm/hot.
Have you tried any other software to test gps usage?
Do you have ALL the settings for Google/gps/locations and maps set up in the correct manner?
Do you have a case or any other protection on the phone - if so remove it
If your ambient temps are high this just compounds any issues with heat
first time to hear that
will be very carful

I was able to get the GPS working fine. However it doesn't work in Android. If I turn on the GPS and the GPS starts looking signal and when it founds it, it causes instant freeze. This is a real mystery to me. What can cause this issue? WinMo 6.5 with WWE 3.14 and 2.15.50.14, GPS works great, but when I switched to nand Android RAFDROID 4.0.2, the GPS doesn't work anymore. Or it does work, it does look for the signal and everything, but when it founds it, it causes instant freeze. Screen stays on, nothing happens.
I should point out, that I was having this same exact problem, prior the repair. And some time ago, I was still able to get the GPS working in various versions of nand Android. But now, whatever Android build I use, I have the same issue. Something in Android is messing the GPS module.
The heat is not that bad of a problem in Android, so I can live with that. I'm not using any bumpers or any other protection.
hi if you sent it back to htc repair center contact them again and say problem still there they should replace phone for you
Send it back for replacement. Yeah the phones become warmer under certain conditions but I use mine to watch hour long XviDs one after the other in the sun and I have no such issues. It takes constant downloading of data with GPS locked and loads of apps open for mine to warm up! Sounds like you need a mainboard replacement to be honest, surprised they didn't switch the boards the first time and test .
I've never had mine reboot or go crazy on me due to heat, at worse the battery temp check kicked in in WM while charging to switch off charge (flashing orange led) with my cheap Chinese battery
Sent from my Nexus One
I have heard that the high temperature causes by 3g... If you use 3g data, try to disable it and then try gps and movies again.
The conclusion, btw, is to sent the phone back for repair or replacement.
Same here my brother's hd2 working perfectly fine but mine every time temperature exceeds 33 celcius gps cause phone reboot and if i manage to turn gps on can't find fix
I got my phone up to ~42C while I was working in an auto garage and I still don't have reboot. If your phone reboots at a certain temperature, your phone is defective, and try to get it replaced by warranty, or you could try to modify your phone to fix the issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982454
I've been having a few issues with a couple of games freezing and have also had the phone get quite hot, particularly around the camera end. The two games I've had freeze up a lot are Fruit Slice and Pinball Classic, neither are spectacular graphics wise. Basically the games just freeze up and either I'm ejected to the home screen or I have to power off/restart. Occasionally I do get the "Force Close" box, but not very often, this contrary to what I would expect if it were just a normal bug related issue. sometimes it crashes after 5 mins or so, other times straight away. What makes me think it might be overheating is that once it does freeze up, it will do so again almost instantly if I relaunch. The rest of the phone seems okay in operation, I've run a few benchmarks and stress tests, all run okay so far. However (and it is a BIG however), once the phone has got warm, if I go to adjust my screen brightness I am limited to how high I can raise it and receive the following message: "To avoid overheating, maximum brightness has been reduced" (I've attached a screen print below).
Does anybody else get these issues or that message?
Got that "To avoid overheating..." message too while using Navigon Mobile Navigator inside my car (attached to charger).
In some other post I also read about a message like "To avoid overheating, the charging process has been paused", but this depends on the temperature of the battery only (I think).
Regarding the crashing games, that might be a problem of the game. But I had some crashing games, too, but I could not find a relation to the temperature of the phone.
Anyway, it could still be a heat problem.
In my opinion it would had be better for samsung to make the phone some mm thicker to better deal with heat and including a more powerful battery than just claiming to have the thinnest superphone.
Anyway, its still a great device.
Useful to hear it happens on other handsets, in fact I've now found a few threads talking about the issue happening on other models of samsung phone, such as the Infuse.
On the crashing games front, would you mind trying out Fruit Slice for a bit, to see if it hangs on you? If it dosen't crash after 10 mins or so I would think you're okay.
about overheating
i did experience it
when i left the phone in the car it became very hot and i get the same message

I'll try that as soon as I have it back (and if I remember to test), its currently at the repair facility because of a faulty camera.

Cheers, really appreiated. Just to update, I played it again just now, managed 3 games before it froze and kicked me out to the home screen; again no crash dialoge asking force close/wait?! I also checked my temp immediatly after it crashed, using Stability Test V1.5, it reported 31c, which dosen't sound too hot from what I've heard...who knows, cheers agian though!

sorry about the double post
Okay, I've been playing now about 15+ minutes without any problem. The phone doesnt get even hot, just a little bit warm. Using Navigon Navigator it gets a LOT more hotter.
So maybe you should try a factory reset? Or its a faulty phone...
By the way, I had display brightness set to Auto and I'm on german KE7 firmware.
okay.... i have some weird issues with my x10 that's most other dont... so i assumed that my hardware gone wrong.. im just posting here so if some PRO can confirm that's it is the hardware problems
firstly, while charging, easy to get reboot... even messaging...
playing "light game" is also easy to get reboot
all the cases is test on custom rom+ custom kernel/stock kernel
and stock rom as well....
so please... if it is a hardware problems... is it possible to send to sony to get a replacement? well ofcourse i have to pay but anybody know the estimate price? (my phone is out of warranty)
thanks buds
You are not alone.
I have suffered constant random reboots lately and a number of total shut downs that do not allow a restart unless the software is reloaded. The device vibrates as normal when you turn it on but then nothing happens. If youleave it in that state it totally dicharges the battery. In addition, the performance on 2G was nothing short of abysmal, data connection being lost all the time.
It has just gone back for the second time. The first time the transmitter stage was replaced. I asked what would happen if this did not cure it and was told it would be mended again - no replacement phone (not good).
It would appear that a 24 month contract for a mobile is not a good idea as the (smart) phone hardware seems to be incapable of holding together for that period of time. So I am reduced to using my trusty K800i for the time being. Still if it is good enough for James Bond, it's good enough for me..............
