Has anyone encountered similar symptoms I've getting. I was using Garmin Mobile XT in california about a month ago and the phone was on the dashboard getting really hot from all the sun. but I didn't pay too much attention to it. Now I think my GPS radio is heat sensative. if the unit it getting warm (even brightness on full indoors), it might freeze and restart, but if I do anything that touches the GPS (google maps, garmin, geotagging) I have to do the steps with the utmost care as to not go through the menus too fast. even on fresh boot (phone was off), if I go into Garmin too quickly the phone will restart or just stay stuck on the white HTC screen (which is resolved by removing battery and leaving it out for 30 secs or so). if the phone is warm, the GPS unit will almost always freeze and restart. googles maps has use GPS settings but I can't turn it off anymore as the phone always restarts before I can untick that.
the only really way to determine if it is in fact the GPS radio is to somehow disable the radio permanently and see if it continues to freeze. but it HAS restarted when doing none GPS related tasks (this occurs if the unit is warmed up via high brightness or being in a warm climate) such as mp3 playing and such.
anyone? going to try yet another rom and hopefully that helps
Anytime I use any program that uses my GPS the phone freezes and restarts.. I can't even use it.. I have done a hard reset and everything the phone still has the same problem... any advice??
hi,
i also have problem with gps. As i use a non htc car charger during navigation, sometimes my hd2 gets real hot and the navigation programm lost gps fix. Sometimes my device restarts automatically.
Now i lost the gps fix when using a navagation programm sometimes after 5 minutes, but max. 30 minutes the gps fix is gone. So i have to make a soft reset to get a gps fix again. Navigation programm restart doesn't help.
How can i check if the gps modul is ok or not?
thanks

Have you run the same programs and situation, but only with the power connector not plugged in?
the freezes and restarts are under tomtom and igo my way, when the car charger is plugged in, but only sometimes.
But now also without the car charger is plugged in, i also lost gps fix with igo. The longest time without loosing gps fix is about 30 minutes. I made a trip about 60 minutes with tomtom still got gps fix?!
Strange is also that if the device lost gps fix under iGO, i have to make a soft reset to get the gps works again.

You need to make sure that nothing else is in communication with your GPS, ie having TomTom GoogleMaps running at the same time.
Silly question but why have TomTom and iGo installed?

Bad news!
From my experience this is just the beginning of the worst thing: overheating problems of CPU related to BGA balls=a future non-working device with only 1 solution, another motherboard!
Can you reflow the motherboard, the oven method, did anyone did it before?

i think your right !!
I have a hd2 with this problem
it's a nand pb, no other solution than another motherboard
or use it in north Pole (or in a fridge ^^)
I also had this problem and the solution was a new phone. CPU overheats and phone freezes or reboots. It is a design flaw that is also present in the first Google phone.
This occurs mostly when using a GPS guidance software, that keeps the screen on and you may also have to keep your phone connected to the charger, thus enormous amounts of heat is generated.
You'll see that if you only use a simple GPS test app for hours you won't have a problem. So it is not the fault of the GPS unit.
Another way to see that your phone is bad is by keeping it recording a video at maximum quality from camera, while keeping the phone plugged to the charger. Somewhere between 20minutes and 60minutes (depending on ambient temperature), your phone will freeze.
And another way to check this is to call another phone and leave it on a table face up so the screen won't shut off for 1h-2h. Heat will build up and the phone will freeze. Guaranteed.

There is a thread dedicated to this subject (OP by facdemol), but results are really unpredictable (sometimes good, sometimes bad).
I will try to underclock the cpu , with setcpu to max 700Mhz, I hope with this i will have less heat.
this is the best method, undervolt and underclock the cpu to something like 800mhz.
apple underclocked their processors in the iphone for lower heat output and better battery life.
it is possible to do the same to the hd2, dropping couple hundred mhz will allow for a failry lower operating voltage to be applied and a large reduction i heat output.
or better yet setup a power profile for gps app usage where clockspeed is locked to something like 700mhz when running tomtom.
I used setcpu to do the underclock, is there a option to do it throuh HyperDroid-CM7-v5.8.0[a2sd][CyanogenMod7 LEO 2.3.7][seader_R9] i am using? the max option is only 998Mhz and above, can i do something to see other speeds to?
I have a similar problem with my HD2 / GPS.
It will sometimes pull a GPS location, but then quickly looses the GPS fix.
Right now I have ICS running, but had the same issue with Win 6.5, Win 7, and Gingerbread(s).
Does anyone have a recommendation on a good app to get base data from the GPS.
Thanks,

For android use Gps status&tools, very good application!
During the last week I experienced some strange behaviour on my HD2. I want to point out that in general I am very happy with it, but now I wonder whether my device is faulty or weather this is a feature.
What I have seen:
- my device had some sudden reboots when using it in my car, charging with car charger
- this happens only when outside temeperature is close to 30 degrees C or above
- it happens after some time (10 - 15 min) using Navigon or even just doing Bluetooth calls
- it usually stops charging the device, the LED is then blinking green & orange, then reboot
- I recognize that the device is very hot
- after cooling down it has lost the power settings
I found two other threads dealings with similiar effects
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=707477
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627884
and now want to do some detailed anaylsis here. I installed BattClock (great tool!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612083
to monitor the battery temparatur and found the following:
- idle phone (office, not charging, 3G connect, push mail activated): 25 - 30°C
- phone in use (office, not charging, checking mails etc): 30 - 34°
- idle charging (as idle phone, plus charging): 30 - 34°
- phone in use, charging in car, summer temp 28°): temperuture rises up to 47°
The last case ended with a reboot, when coming up again the temperature was 47.1 degrees, green / orange was bblinking and charging has stopped. Before crashing the temperature raised from 33 to 47° within 15 minutes.
Can anybody confirm whether he can run the HD2 wíth 47° and above? I would like to understand whether I shoul return my phone under warranty or whether this is a feature. 47° is high - though I do not think too high??? I also got the impression that this issue is coming up more and more frequently with my phone and as the summer just has started this could mean I need to stop charging while driving. How to use navigation?
Any comments or ideas?
Regards Hase
Well Hase,
I've seen this a few times in the past when driving running CoPilot, Bluetooth, screen bright and charging.
In the last week, with a new ROM base and significantly warmer weather, I've seen this with just having the phone in the car charging.
Very interested (and actively hunting) a manual underclock to see if it helps.
I don't think this is a defect, but it does happen.
I've noticed it too a alot during the NE heatwave in the US.
I'm waiting it out for now.
47C is not too hot though, although maybe there could be some kind of feature with the processor?
Yeah I've noticed it too. I was driving in my car running Bing Navigation with no problems for about 2 hours with the windows up and the ac on in my car. 10 minutes after I opened the windows when it was 101 F outside bing maps would randomly shut down and other apps would not even open. Closed the windows cranked the ac and held my phone in front of the vent to cool down and it went back to normal without even having to soft reset. Seems like a feature to prevent damage to the phone.
I would guess its some overheat protection feature with the processor, as its really the latest, which means sometimes it may get too hot ( you know, 1GHZ is really fast and thus may generate much more hrest than normal slower processors ) . Just like Intel's processors, which also shut off when the temperature rises over a certain programmed known "safe" temperature and reboots the computer, in hope that when its started again, it would be cooler. As for battery temperature, the cpu may be even hotter than the battery's temperature and thus it may seem that the phone shut off at a low temperature, but in actual, the processor is REALLY hot. And as its a mobile processor and its known that the second hottest factor is charging/discharging the battery, charging may be temporarily disabled until it cools down to a "safe" temperature to prevent overheating/buring out other components. But that's just what I think. Best to check with Qualcomm or HTC if possible as it may also be a defect in the phone. Hope this helps.
I haven't experienced any reboots but I have had problems with my HD2 locking up due to excessive heat.
Leaving it in direct sunlight means I'm unable to unlock the phone due to the lack of response from the screen.
Yesterday my HD2 was charging in its cradle and wi-fi was on. The device got hot and became unresponsive and I ended up putting it in the fridge for 10 mins which brought it back to life.
The HD2 definitely has an issue with high temps, the screen in particular.

Have you tried LeoCpuSpeed?
I have had this problam as well. It also happened with my Touch Pro 2 when in the car, sun, Copilot, etc...
My fix was kind of a lucky guess. I have AC vents that blow on the windows of the doors when it is on the defrost setting. I just have the windshield mount sitting kind of over the vent for the drivers window. It is not quite in a direct line with the window, but enough AC comes out of it to get to the device and cool it.
When I do this, it goes from a rather toasty to the touch to rather cold actually. Even with the rubber "case" on it it keeps it down to a reasonable temp, if not below, with it charging, GPS going, bluetooth stereo and WMP all going.
Since popping it into the airflow it has not even gotten warm let alone started the warning flashes and such.
Kind of an obvious one, but those are the most often overlooked so I figured I would add it in.

In fact that was my solution too. I changed my cradle using one putting the HD2 in front of an AC outlet and now everything is fine. Just make sure the lower part of the HD2 where the USB cable is connected is not covered by the cradle or any cover as this is the place where the cold wind has to blow. Battery temp remains well below 30° C, if driving longer distances even below 20°. I am not sure whether I will get too low? And I do not now yet what will happen in winter when we get it freezing cold and heating will step in.

Does anybody have tried underclocking yet? Would be good to now whether this could be an option too. Sometimes even using the HD2 on hot days (without charging!) gets the temp up to 38° C plus. Best thing is not to hold it on the lower part.
I am wondering that still only some people get this problems. Either everybody is ACed (not poss in my convertable) or the problem is only with some HD2 or some ROM. Has anybody noticed any other strange behaviour after an overheating occured? I noticed some issues during the last months which I could not yet connect to any other reason. I am not sure whether I have had overheating bevor these occured the first time:
- all of a sudden bluetooth connex to my car was not poss any more
- all of a sudden pocket xls application and the note application got very very slow
- all of a sudden POP connect to google Mail did not show any mails any more.
These effects did not show up the first time all together, they came one after another, one per month since March. And probably I have had overheating earlier without even noticing it
Regards Hase
Hi, i have the same problem with overheating ... it stop charging when Battery Temperature reach 45°C. Battery PINS are all OK and clean
First : My Leo has Radio 2.11 (2.12 same problem)
OEM 2.10 (My own ROM)
Today Test : Go back to original ROM 1.66 (Radio 2.06) and my HD2 does not overheat ! Strange
I can see with PowerGuard that the charging current slow down when the temperature go up and reach max 42.3°C
Tomorrow Test : Radio 2.06 and my ROM with OEM 2.10 ... if do not overheat then i try with Radio 2.08 (more RAM ... TMOUS) ....
to be continued ...
Today Test with Original Firmware 1.66 and Radio 2.06 has problem too
Ordered new original Battery from Brack.ch ... when battery comes make new test to see if it's the battery or HD2.
Strange is that the battery is not so hot but the charge circuit of the HD2 is very Hot. (Hottest place is between SD CARD and SIM Card)

Hello,
I experienced the same sudden shut downs (not reboots) during the last days as well ("hopefully" only due to the very hot weather). And none of my POP3 account seem to work right now!
The internet connectivity seems to be okay, and of course I haven't changes any mail settings... but I cannot receive or send any mails. I get no error message when I try to receive mails but when I click on the new mail button my HD2 asks me to set up a new mail connection!
Any solution found to this problem?
Kind Regards,
DW!

Hmmm, that's no problem on my HD2 - Mobile Excel is opening as fast as ever...
I have now deleted 2 of my 4 mail accounts and re-installed them; the other 2 I simply have re-installed withour prior erasure - and this seem to do the job! Indeed I have done this more than once now, but 3 accounts now already received test mails... the 4th is a freemail account which I can only use every 15min. via POP3/IMAP...

But what was the outside temperature? I think the overheating has to do mainly with using the phone (gps) while charging in a hot environment inside of a car.
Just charging the phone shouldn't use the processor to any significant point.
Just my $.02.
I could not believe it what I read here, but now the high temperatures in Austria caused the same problems on my HD2 when navigating in my car. HD2 after 2-5 minutes blinks orange-green (no loading) and after maximum 10-15 minutes crashes.
Unfortunately I have to rely on navi-function for my upcoming vacation. No solution to place the HD2 in AC-stream in my car with this stupid original HTC-Car-Navi-Holder.
When driving in the heat of noon I don´t even have to switch it on, just mounting into the loading-cradle is enough to make the HD2 crash after 10-15 minutes, only 3G on, nothing else (no BT, WiFi, HSPA, no app running etc.)
Until now I was quite satisfied with the HD2, had no crashes or malfunctions so far, but now I am really fed up with this piece of sh.. and I don´t think there will be a hardware or software-solution (except swichting it off) since the HD2 is malconstructed.
This was the last time I bought a HTC product ............... Crap at a high price I can have with an iPhone too ................
Hi everybody. I got my hd2 second hand and it doesn't have a warranty. My phones seems to have a faulty temperature sensor. Is there any way to disable the sensor by software? Or even manually would be great. I don't mind opening the phone since it isn't really useable in it's current condition. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Dang, I was hoping someone had a fix
Can you describe the problem a bit more. My Hd2 has overheated but is completely usable.(happens when charging and watching movies /a lot of YouTube)
Sent from my HTC Hd2 using XDA App
Hi, I have tried running wm6, android, and wp7. Starting from room temperature my phone usually works for 10-15 minutes before locking up and I have to take the battery out. The battery does not feel warm, only the lower portion of the phone. After the phone sits for 5 minutes or so I can put the battery back in and turn it on. Holding the phone it barely feels warm.
I don't know on witch radio version you are now but I have had some equal problems in the past, and by changing my radio the problem was solved. lately I'm on Radio 2.15.50 (all is okay now) but previously when i was on radio 2.14.50 and 2.12.50 I had this issue.
Thanks. I'll give it a try. Hopefully changing the radio will help
Had nothing to do with your battery, that's your processor heating up. Install set cpu
It depends also what you call overheating.
It's normal than the phone become hot in some conditions (GPS, ...).
This was also stated on the HTC website when they launched the HD2.
Hi,
I recently sent my HD2 for repair, because it had heat issues and GPS couldn't get a lock. Now I've got my HD2 back, but when I try to use the GPS, it either doesn't find signal at all or when I use for example Google Maps or TomTom, it causes the phone to reboot. I've used the QuickGPS software to get a faster lock, but this doesn't resolve the issue.
Also the heat issues still exist. Whenever I wan't to watch videos etc., the device heats up a lot and causes the phone to reboot. The bottom of the device gets always very hot.
The service center did change the touch screen, chassis and installed "HotFix-update", but these didn't solve anything. Does this mean, that the service center changed wrong parts? What actually can cause heat and GPS freezing/rebooting issues?
I'm now using stock WinMo 6.5 and the ROM version is WWE 3.14 and the radio version is 2.15.50.14.
Watching video or any activity that constantly uses the screen also uses a lot of battery power and it will get very warm/hot.
Have you tried any other software to test gps usage?
Do you have ALL the settings for Google/gps/locations and maps set up in the correct manner?
Do you have a case or any other protection on the phone - if so remove it
If your ambient temps are high this just compounds any issues with heat
first time to hear that
will be very carful

I was able to get the GPS working fine. However it doesn't work in Android. If I turn on the GPS and the GPS starts looking signal and when it founds it, it causes instant freeze. This is a real mystery to me. What can cause this issue? WinMo 6.5 with WWE 3.14 and 2.15.50.14, GPS works great, but when I switched to nand Android RAFDROID 4.0.2, the GPS doesn't work anymore. Or it does work, it does look for the signal and everything, but when it founds it, it causes instant freeze. Screen stays on, nothing happens.
I should point out, that I was having this same exact problem, prior the repair. And some time ago, I was still able to get the GPS working in various versions of nand Android. But now, whatever Android build I use, I have the same issue. Something in Android is messing the GPS module.
The heat is not that bad of a problem in Android, so I can live with that. I'm not using any bumpers or any other protection.
hi if you sent it back to htc repair center contact them again and say problem still there they should replace phone for you
Send it back for replacement. Yeah the phones become warmer under certain conditions but I use mine to watch hour long XviDs one after the other in the sun and I have no such issues. It takes constant downloading of data with GPS locked and loads of apps open for mine to warm up! Sounds like you need a mainboard replacement to be honest, surprised they didn't switch the boards the first time and test .
I've never had mine reboot or go crazy on me due to heat, at worse the battery temp check kicked in in WM while charging to switch off charge (flashing orange led) with my cheap Chinese battery
Sent from my Nexus One
I have heard that the high temperature causes by 3g... If you use 3g data, try to disable it and then try gps and movies again.
The conclusion, btw, is to sent the phone back for repair or replacement.
Same here my brother's hd2 working perfectly fine but mine every time temperature exceeds 33 celcius gps cause phone reboot and if i manage to turn gps on can't find fix
I got my phone up to ~42C while I was working in an auto garage and I still don't have reboot. If your phone reboots at a certain temperature, your phone is defective, and try to get it replaced by warranty, or you could try to modify your phone to fix the issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982454
Hello guys, hope I can get an idea here to solve a problem, i'm at the end of my hopes.
So, I got an unlocked EU HD2, been using it with Android mainly. Some months ago the touchscreen broke, I got it changed under warranty.
Since it came back the phone freezes under heavy load the image is stuck on screen, hardware keys don't react if I press them and if there was any audio playing at the moment of the freeze i hear a buzzing sound (possibly the last of the audio buffer playing back constantly).
By "heavy load" I mean flash, Youtube streaming, games (jelly defense) sometimes offline video playback, google maps specially when caching areas for offline use, when GPS locking. It's not CPU load it seams but high current drain load possibly (CPU stress test runs for long times without issues).
I mentioned possible heat related cause because if the phone freezes and I reboot right away it freezes again quite shortly but if i let it cool down and then boot up it takes longer for it to freeze.
This appears in multiple android builds, it is more frequent on ICS builds (or it seems under high GPU use), appears in WM6 also but less frequent.
I got the phone back to stock state and sent it back to service with the information above (minus anything android related) and they sent it back saying the problem did not manifest. Indeed in WM6 with stock software it seems that there is not much that can stress it enough.
The phone itself does not get noticeably hotter than before touchscreen replacement but the screen itself seems to heat up less, it might be that it used ti dissipate some of the heat before.
So anyone got a clue if there is something I could do ? I'm willing to take the phone apart to solve the problem but not without a clear plan in mind.
It is an already well-known problem with CPU heating failure probably because of BGA balls between motherboard and CPU.
The only long-lasting solution is replacement of motherboard, unfortunately...
Thanks for the info.
Alas, no good news, was hoping it may be a heat dissipation problem. I wonder then how this may have appeared after touch screen replacement.
