Dude, seriously, you know we all love you here at XDA Archos (and every Archos site), but I have no idea what you said. I know you said something about a conference, and internal communications, so I know it's a business function of some kind. But then you started talking about shelves, so...i'm kinda lost.
Edit: I never click on links...I'm deathly afraid of getting rick-rolled.

Hi Cajl,
This is d00b on the ArchosFans forum. Hope you are well. Drop in here to check, since the Gen9 was introduced today. I noted there isn't any 5" or smaller model. Is this a permanent shift away from the pocketable sizes?

I think they decided to create tablet just above the 5 mark They have "normal" mp3 players too, you should look at them i've bought one beside my A101
I noted the 3G stick has its own covered USB slot. Is this specifically for the 3G, or is the USB connector a general-use port?

Last option The 3G Stick has a own usb port, so we could connect to 3g and a HDD or keyboard.. A change: The A80 has a fullsize usb port, you dont need a adapter(like for the 70)
The Gen8 only has 256MB. Do you know if the Gen9 is similar? The specs don't list memory allotment (same as with the Gen8).

Yep
PS. We have a "G9 Discussions Thread" here
Lennb,
Thanks for the info. The reason I ask about the 3G slot being usable for general USB is that it would be nice to plug in a stick w/ large storage (say 64 or 128GB) on a semi-permanent basis, and use the regular USB port for other things.
I was interested in the Gen8 A43 until Archos upped the pricing at the last minute. It would be nice to have an Android counterpart to the iPod Touch. I realize many have smartphones that subsume this function, but such a pocketable size can have many uses.
Personally, I think Archos hit all the right spots--price point, features, performance, etc. My major concern, as of many here, is the hardware build quality, and quality of OS updates. I think the Gen9 is still worth the consideration, but I'll wait for user feedback from here as well as on ArchosFans.
I do wish Archos well, as we do need a reasonably-priced option other than all of these $400-500 Tegra 2 clones.

Please
I would say, this will working, but maybe we have to create a kernel with more Usb Energy output or so, like sibere just did
That's the other thing that concerns me, that Gen8 had fairly limited hacking support from the community (no offense to Sauron and others here). It would be nice if Gen9 can be as "open" as, say, the Xoom, to facilitate 3rd-party ROMs.
I guess we'll just have to wait to find out. Unlike last year, this year there'll be many other tablets on the shelves. Archos will need to be competitive, and not just on price!

That's because you're in EU. Us Yanks are ugly ducklings in regards to Archos distribution. US retailers never got decent stock on Gen8 until after the new year, which kinda defeats the point. (Oops, I'm starting to slip into a rant...)

Heard that around here a few times, and around tech sites a few times. Nvidia seems to be difficult to get any answers out of too. There were people asking about it on their forums and it didnt seem that anyone was getting any answers as to why.
That's the kind of treatment I would expect from eLocity/compal but not from nvidia

No, I think it was just a bad management decision on nvidia's part. I can understand that they want their guys working on the new upcoming stuff, but abandoning not only the companies that used the last generation components in their products, but the users that purchased the devices not knowing that nvidia had something like this up their sleeve ... it's pretty BS. I don't see why they can't leave a small team working with the harmony boards. I am sure they have teams on the payroll that are working on projects that are useless in comparison.

Congrats Dexter!!!
Yes, heartfelt congratulations to Dexter, who has shown such patience and good humor to so many of us in this forum.
I was just thinking about how much computing power I'm holding in my hand with this crazy almost orphan eLocity A7...when compared to my first computer bought in 1991--a tank of a 486 33mhz mail-order ZEOS with a grand total of 8 MB of RAM and a 256 MB hard drive (but it had a math co-processor!) it's hard to comprehend how far we've come. That damn thing was the fastest computer around when new and cost 3 grand(!) and I had to install a CDR drive, a sound card and I can't even remember what else. I was a wiz with config.sys and autoexec.bat and made that beast last me for 7 years by crunching the hard drive beyond all comprehension. I actually ended up giving it away to someone in 1998, who went on to use it a couple more years after that.
So when we ***** and moan about the lack of true multi-touch, sd card issues, etc...just remember where we've come from and thank Dr. Moore.
lol, my first machine was a IBM PC XT
A whopping 4.77 MHz of pure 8088 processor (pre-286) power.
UPGRADED to 256k of memory.
UPGRADED to a 20 MB hard drive.
ran the electric bill up higher than leaving the microwave on for days at a time
Hey, at least it had a hard drive! Remember when all they had were two huge floppy disk drives...if you were lucky!

Well it seems that we were all proved wrong after yesterday.
I just read this http://www.mytabletlife.com/2011/04/13/nvidia-support-older-tegra-2-tablets-all/ and it seems that nvidia will actually be continuing with support for the harmony boards. They are also saying that they want to help the open source ROM community, but in the same breath saying that they will not provide support, 3rd party drivers, or honeycomb source... So what else do they have to offer???

If they did stop, Intel with their Z brand and soon to be AMD would own the market, when Asus come out I will go with them, been buying Asus motherboard for over twenty add years love they brand, have a Eee PC and will most likely get their tablet. I still think Intel would come out ontop when Asus start to flood the tablet market..just like they netbook did..
Commodore 64 on an old 13 inch anchor crt w the twist knobs and uhf/vhf selector. nyah. make me feel old.
theres a good 4 sdks and other device roms to dig around for our ol devices ya know..
and the chipset manufacter may appreciate your end purchases in their total sales to manufacturers, they arent there to support you. theyre there to support the manufacturers embedding their chipsets. they dont have to give you answers, support or care.
..last gossip said we should see a kernel source release in a week from elocity. yeah, i'll believe it when i see it. 2 months is a pretty fair wait time from last software release tho.

the official statement from Nvidia is a bit more specific..
they will continue to support the vendors with harmony based boards, as long as they continue to release updates...nvidia will as example provide help on elocityA7 as long as the guys behind it will release updates, so if they don't, nvidia will not be able to help.
as parts of the nvidia developer kit, is protected by a NDA, the support Nvidia provides Opensource ROM developers can be limited, and only chip related..
elocity has different BT,wifi, touch and other tabs follow the same path, different hardware used for bt,wifi, touch panels... so its limited how much nvidia can provide of assistance without vendors releasing updated sources..
thats why their original "quick" statement was, to go with 3.0 alone, since most vendors now have to go 3.0, and the old ones will die quickly as they got some nasty extras like softbuttons being unused, or too low resolution for new native 3.0 apps. similar to the new sense3.0 requiring more video and resolution, and people complain because it cannot fit on old small video and resolution devices.. a pretty good explanation but no one seems to understand..
Finally picked up a Xoom yesterday. I had been through 4 Android devices over the Christmas holiday period. I really tried to like them but they had way too many shortcomings. I blame that majority of that on the hardware though. I really waffled on the Xoom and iPad2 and decided to give Android another chance. I must say that I'm impressed so far. While I don't want to speak too soon, I think I may end up finally sticking with this one. The price tag still stings a little bit though.
I'll mostly use this for reading e-books, surfing, maybe listening to a little music. I'm really drooling over the idea of getting Netflix to work so I can hook it up to my TV. Another idea I'd like to try (please chime in if you know how) is to use it as an external monitor for my camcorder. A note taking app with a decent stylus would be icing on the cake for classes. I'm still seeing mixed reviews on the styli (sp?) right now though.
Hope to finally be sticking around this fourm long term now!
Welcome! And enjoy the Xoom - It's a great device and there seems to be some movement in accessories and updates finally!
Check out studyblue.com as they have a nice flash-card style study tool designed for the android and iphone platforms. You put in your school information, classes you are taking and you can build your own study materials or download stuff already entered. Pretty slick.
I am unaware of an application to take your camcorders display and port it out through the Xoom but that would be pretty nifty.

Thanks! I was impressed with the number of accessories that I've already started seeing as well. Another reason I went with the Xoom is because of where Motorola stands in the market. If they did as good a job as they did with the Droids, then I think it'll be an excellent product.

Truthfully I don't really have a strong opinon on that. Only thing I know about Asus is their motherboards. My personal opinon was that Motorola has established themselves in this particular market. I also felt that Motorola seems to be quicker to update and has a stronger customer service than Asus. Just my opinon...so everyone keep your stones at your side. Sidebar: Isn't the $400 Transformer 16GB? At least I get twice the storage.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 OR Wait for Tegra Three devices?
I would also allow for you to suggest other devices but please only android and please only 10 inch tablets.
Also the new tegra three devices might not be as thin or good-looking as the samsung which i really care about.
The only reason i like tegra is because of the support it has in the android app developing community so please try to keep the suggestions to tegra devices unless you have a good reason to contradict it.
This is simple for me.
If you can wait, wait.
If not go for it.
I couldn't wait
If you can wait, it means you will NEVER buy a device lol. When Tegra 3 devices come out, Tegra 4 will be announced. I passed on the galaxy tab to wait for a tegra 2 device and now I hear nvidias "Kal-El" quad core. **** it! I'm going for the Gtab!
lol might as well buy the Samsung now and then sell it once the new one you like comes out. But its true, do you really want to keep waiting? Not I, I'm jumping on June 8th.
Personally I would get one now. You can play the waiting game and never get one as there is always a better one around the corner. You can of course wait but I suspect that you won’t see many better or 4 core tablets announced until CES 2012 next year.

No, if you can wait, it means.... you can wait! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've lived my life just fine without a table. It will be a cool toy to have, but I don't NEED one. Tech gadgets are always progressing, but the tablet market is currently moving at a very fast pace. Tegra 3 is supposed to be out later this year, and is supposed to be 5x the performance. That's a much more significant performance/time ratio than other more "mature" tech products. If you can wait, then there's certainly something to be said for jumping on when the curve flattens out a little. What I do will depend a lot on pricing.
i think it's worth waiting... tegra3 pre production chips allready shipped to manyfacturers, mass production starts around august. motorola and probably asus will be releasing products short after ( promising releases before back-to-school time )
this means that you can, in theory, own a quad core beast in within 3 to 4 months months...
and they are realy fast, throw your pc and your mediaplayers out of the window and start using your tablet instead
perhaps you can invest in a program like best buy's buy back program, so when something new comes out, you can trade in your old and get the new for cheap

If you pay attention to the market it doesn't look that way. I personally think we wont see anything better then whats out now until next year. Most of these company's still need to make money off the products that are currently on the market.
Take Samsung for example, think of the time and money that has been spent building and promoting their new tablets around the world. I really don't see them coming out with any new tablets at the end of the year even if they had the new teleology. they first need to make a profit.

Asus, Motorola, and Amazon (and probably others) are all rumored to have Tegra 3 tablets by the end of the year. You can't make much money off of the products you currently have on the market if they are obsoleted by new products your competitors are offering.
I'm going to revise my initial answer.
If you're asking the question "Should I wait?". You should wait.
After the iPad released last year, I started trying to imagine, what exactly I would use a tablet for. Once I was a bit settled on what I wanted to do with it, I started looking for something that would match my needs.
When the 10.1v was announced I realised it was a match and I eagerly went after it.
Maybe you should wait until you are certain that the tablet you are buying is a match for your requirements.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I run the 10.1v and love it.
Things it is:
-light
-sexy (please no 3.5mm jokes)
-brilliant batery (i charge it each night but it only gets down to 30-50% after full day of use)
-netbook replacment (people will argue this but i haven't found a netbook more fun then this, and you can put debian on it )
-casual gaming (not sure of anything on the market you cannotplay onit except porley designed games that are just tiny boxs)
Things it isn't:
-high def cinema (you can run standard def fine and it looks great but if you are obsesd with 720P wait)
-ipad (yer thats a pritty good reason )
-high end device (tegra 2 is fun and all but nexus s still out performes all tegra 2 devices so if you want the bigest and best wait for qualcomm)
In conclusion if you want a great device that doesn't need to be compared to a PC (which i hate that thats were we uave goten in tablets) then go pick one up, but if your after a device that you want to luanch thermal nucular war with wait for qualcomm.

I was really looking forward to GT10.1 but no luck.
It has Tegra 2 inside which is no good for me and has no sd slot which is also no good for me.
I do want a tablet like this but I do have a purpose in getting one - it has to replace my netbook.
Meaning I want to watch 720p mkv without re encoding, netflix, etc...
So far non of the tablets (including iPad2) can do what I want.
If I would be to take one now just to have it Asus Transformer seems like a better choice.
There is an sd slot on it, there is a great dock with batt. for it and looks like it will be/is cheaper.

Hello everybody, I am thinking about picking up one of these tablets and wondering what everybody thinks of theirs. I know that its not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs but for the money that your saving is the Tablet itself worth it? Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!

I think the worst thing you could ever do is to go to a dedicated forum for a product you know little about and ask questions like, "...worth it?" or "... I know its[sic] not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs" and the ever popular but never informative "I am thinking about picking up one of these <insert product here>"
You really won't get much more than biased responses. The best thing you can do is go everywhere else that isn't dedicated to the product you're looking to research *with* your needs in tow and read read read what other people have to say - their issues, the ups and downs - without jumping, waving your hands around and pointing at yourself.
newegg.com, google.com, youtube.com, bestbuy.com etc etc are a good place for you to poke around and read unaided, real-world, replies and topics on issues, questions, comparisons etc.
While this is not by any means ideal for the most part, those who own a product will love it and those who don't will say it's **** - the point is, you should be trying to mitigate that bias by reading up in places that would be less likely to have biased information. Formulate your own opinion based on your needs and what you read [time and time again - which you'll only know if you read read read in a variety of different places] then come back when you have all your specific questions or concerns to get some clarity.
I've got the 16 gb version with wifi only.
I use it for 99% of the things my laptop did and I'm a power user.
Only issue I've had was with torrents.

Yes, that would be listed in "specs" located on Acer's web site, and pretty much any site that sells the A500

tTorrent is alright but speeds suck even with full version. 750 kbps compared to 1.8 mbps for the same file over the same wifi network using my laptop. Slow.

Hello everybody, I am thinking about picking up one of these tablets and wondering what everybody thinks of theirs. I know that its not gonna be comparable to some other high end tabs but for the money that your saving is the Tablet itself worth it? Any reviews would be greatly appreciated!

Which "other high end tabs" do you have in mind? A500 is comparable to every single one of them and actually it comes on top considering connectivity, build quality, etc. Two days ago I bought my wife an ipad2 and she spends half the time at the tablet and the other half at her laptop. I spend 90% of my free time on the tablet and 10% on my laptop. The only thing that ipad has better is the colours of the screen. The white is pretty close to the real white while on the A500 its cooler than it should be. Other than that all I'm hearing these days is "oh, I can't see the pictures on the usb memory stick, right?", "So I need to convert the videos I have to watch them, right?" and my favorite "that stupid iTunes..."
Compared to the Android tablets currently on the market, the Iconia gives more than any of them can.

Here is the #1 thing that I like about the A500: The full size USB port! It is one of the only ones that has it. You can plug in hard drives, usb drives, game controllers etc directly into the tablet. Not many others can do that.
One thing that people give grief to the A500 on is the screen. People think that just because it isn't an IPS panel then it is no good. In my opinion the screen looks great!

My recommendation is to wait a while.
Why?
1. The tablet isn't going anywhere in the next few months and will only get cheaper.
2. The "2s" will be coming early next year - Xoom 2, Transformer 2, Iconia 2? etc. not to mention a slew of other options containing newer/faster/better CPUs at possibly a similar price point hitting the market soon.
3. ICS is out and very, very soon we'll see which tablets are updated the fastest. If you wait just a while longer, you may be able to pick something up at a similar pricepoint with ICS on there initially.
At this point, there's no rush and you'll be better off waiting a bit to see if something nicer comes along. Now granted, something nicer will always come along and it never pays to KEEP waiting. But at this point the Tegra 2 is aged and I think you need to give yourself just a bit more time since you can. Archos for example just released the G9 101 and while I don't see myself buying a tablet with less than 1GB of memory, I am certain vendors will be using alternative, newer dual core chips in their versions coming out in a while. Of course that's just me. I believe in "do unto others" and this is what I would have done if I was in the market for a tablet right now, I'd wait until at least Feb/March of 2012.
That being said, don't get me wrong...I love my A500 and I would surely have recommended it in the past few months. But right now we're on the cusp of a veritable barrage of devices running newer hardware. I wouldn't recommend buying any of the Tegra 2 tablets right now.
Nominated for the best tablet category, along with Ipad 2, Kindle Fire, Transformer and Galaxy tab 10.1
Talk about a tough decision for the judges. All those tablets are awesome for different reasons.
what does this bring me .?????
Does this mean we all get to go on tv.. be famous .. Get unlimited money to go shopping.Does it mean acer will share the money and fame with us all..

I love my A500, but I always thought it to be as mediocre as mediocre can get. This surprises me.
I guess I really couldn't care less where this tablet lies versus others with any awards or recognition per se.
I didn't get as good a price as most did especially over the Black Friday period but when I bought it a month ago, I didn't feel the need to go any further with what else was available on the market as the return period approached.
Regardless of the price, it has performed flawlessly so far and I'm happy with its features. That's a winner in my books!

what's considered non-mediocre to you? Ipad2 is the #1 selling tablet, yet its specs still come up short when compared to A500 (namely 512MB ram vs 1GB ram). Acer A500 has all the capabilities/features that other top selling tablets have if not more.
The full size USB port was a huge plus for me. I store most of my movies on my external drive. It essentially made my tablet 532gb
I didn't see other tablets with such high reviews, moderate price, and sufficient features to sway me otherwise.

Is there a link to the list of contestants? I found their site globalmobileawards.com but I couldn't find a list of the tabs.
Huh? It's linked on their site (Cat 6d of the nominations)?! Or am I seeing a different site here in Germany than you are?

I am holding you personally responsible for there commitment. If they do not come thru with this . I Will expect you to do so .You will be contacted by my lawyer.I Can pay her in shoes as well.Giggles..
I already love my A500 but if it won that would just be one more thing to rub in iPoo users' faces. Not that I seek out debate but I wouldn't mind having that bit of info in my arsenal.
There are some people who just don't listen to specs and say, "Yeah but it's an iPad so it's gonna be the best." and a "useless" award that says it's the best is what shuts those simple folk up.
Iconia gets the European award as well... thumbs up !!!

watch those awards.. Then look at the adds on the web sites owned and sponsored by the people giving out the awards.. you will then see who will win.. Its all about Money... MY GUESS IS ipad . Thou i would never own one.......
I don't understand why people think less of this tablet compared to other "mainstream" tablets.
It rocks, It's Capable, Great screen (although slightly washed out compared to some i've seen, esp the iPad), AND it has a USB port.
With that said, It's heavy, Kinda ugly, thick, the build quality could be better, and the camera sucks. But i'm not complaining since it was so cheap, I can buy a new one next year with the savings over a xoom or GalaxyTab.
The I pad has never and will never sell on specs alone. They sell image and the Apple ecosystem Discussing specs and Apple is like discussing the new Toyota Camry with a sports car fan. It goes 0-60 in 6.something seconds, but nobody cares because it's a Camry. That's leaving out the whole OS requirements discussion.
FYI, I had the Transformer Prime in mind when I think non-mediocre.
