Sony Arc vs HTC - Xperia Arc General

Hi,
I am considering the Arc to be my next phone but I would like to know about its video capabilities. In nearly all HTC phones, when recording in low light conditions/at night, the camera tries to compensate the lack of light and this tends to make the video lose frames and to be really choppy. Does the Arc perform better and does it skips frames in bad lighting conditions?
Thanks!!

Videos are great on the Arc, I'd say better than on HTC.
Didn't test it on my Arc yet but in youtube are smooth videos from the Arc.

Most of HTC phones have really ****ty cameras, actually the worse on the market.
Don't even wonder. Arc is another planet.

best cam of HTC is at Sensation, and is one of the best on the market now... i think

HTC Sensation is a class lower compared to Xperia Arc - not only with regard to the camera.
Dualcore is not everything.

Even mobile-review proves different.

GSMArena has a comparison of the LG Optimus 2X, HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S2 which also features various other handsets at different junctures.
When comparing still image and video capture, they also throw in the Arc for good measure.
Draw your own conclusions.

If u own 1 HTC, then you own all off em because they all look the same. That's why I bought the ARC.

I agree, HTC phones are one class lower than SonyEricsson in terms of build quality, design and phone technology.
By just comparing the phone battery technology, all their phones are still using Lithium Ion Battery while SonyEricsson's phone are using Lithium Polymer and everyone should know that there are more benefits for Lithium Polymer over Lithium Ion Batteries.

Hey thanks for all your replies. I think I'll have to try one at the shop to get a better idea on the device itself before deciding. Still, the camera seems to be the only thing that appeals to me - the screen is a bit small (I've own 4.3 hd2/desire hd and now a 5 inch dell streak). Will definitely have to play with it - still the Arc seems to be a very sexy phone!
Thanks all!

Some of these replies look quite fanboyish.. there's a reason HTC sells so many phones..more than SE atleast
Anyway, add me to the SE fanboy list Until I get bored of Timescape I will stick to SE

There are 2 simple reasons why htc have and still do sell more phones than SE....
1. They've been in the android business since the start..
2. Until now SE's android phones have been relatively poor, and therefore SE had a bad rep.

I have a last question : If the zoom function is used while recording a video, does the camera automatically auto-focuses the video to make it clearer/sharper, or is the video blurry when zoom is used like in every phone model? Thanks!!

Oh now i realised why all videos on youtube don't have any zoom on them. Thank you very much for the infos.

I've currently got an Xperia Arc and a HTC Desire S. The camera on the Arc is superior to that on the HTC as is video recording. I've actually been a bit shocked by how poor the HTC Desire S camera is for pictures although a friend with the new Sensation says that it has a great camera, he does however qualify that by going on to say it is great "for a HTC camera" which to me, says it all.

Hi,
I have the HTC Desire Z and I would like to get a 2nd phone.
There are only 2 options for me: The Arc or the Desire S. I think both HTC and SE are top manufactures in terms of design and build quality, the rest are just iS**t clones
I like the Desire S because of the uni-body aluminum design, but I think The Arc is nicer. I am a little bit concerned about the quality of the plastic on the Arc's back, an also i don't like the size ( 3,7 seams ideal for me).
I don't care about the camera, but I'm sure SE's is much better.

[Q] Video recorded by desire Z ?

Maybe this is not all too important, but I am very curious about the video quality this phone will record. One thing I have always sacrificed when buying htc (one of the first ones with qwerty, can't recall it's name, the tytn 2 and hero) is the picture and video quality. I am into htc and android for the android fun, not the multimedia, but this time I do not want to have a camera which shoots video and images poorer than a two year old Sony Ericsson or Nokia phone.
So, who is first one up to post, and how soon?
The Desire Z doesn't seem to be getting as much interest as the HD. I can find a video allegedly shot with the HD but nothing for the Z.
If this is anything to go by (and you have to assume that the HD would be the better quality of the two) I think we must resign ourselves to the fact that HTC are not at all hot in the camera / media department!
Shame ...

It is more to Qualcomm than to HTC, since the image quality depends largely on the image processing hardware of Qualcomm chip, and they are not so strong in that department (Samsung and iPhone are doing better there).

I am sure this is true to an extent but surely HTC could invest in better quality sensors and consider the likes of Carl Zeiss optics or similar? This would make a MASSIVE difference and would rely less heavily on post image processing algorithms to achieve passable picture quality.

true, but the g2 720p doesnt look no were near as good as to say galaxy s 720p also very blurry when moving the camera (from the videos ive seen from the g2)
does anyone know if this can be adjusted by software or is it just the hardware that is rubbish?
I actually just noticed the resolution my self. So stupid not to check the quality settings before starting to record.
i would love the desire z to have the quality audio/camera of galaxy s, im in two minds, buy this and put up with the rubbish audio quality/no so good camera or buy the galaxy s?
Have heard of people saying that the galaxy s isn't as good as htc, in terms of the senseui being really good... Also, do you want a hardware keyboard? Galaxy S doesn't have, and I know I wouldn't be able to live without the hardware keyboard...
Here is article on G2 camera:

BTW. If U looking for good camera quality go for iP4, Nokia or SE. HTC does ****ty plastic camera.
I did this one on BART in SF. I didn't move around or anything, just a quick video playing with the G2.

In general. Nobody beats Sony cameras. However they use standard gingerbread interface, which takes away some of the cooler features seen usually on their phones. Still I p personally would say quality is superb.

My DHD has an 8mp camera and my XP only has a 5, yet the XP camera beats the DHD's hands down
Wasn't really impressed with the DHD's camera either. It had that magenta tint in the middle of the pic. Haven't given the play's pic quality any thought and that's a good thing for me then it must be good, cause I'm very visual and bad pic quality would have struck my eye as it did on the DHD

Those are take under Auto settings. When we set it to manual it can take great pictures ... Check this out
excuse me,but, there isn`t any developer working on this?
i think if the iphone use the same ccd,our arc can do better fotos.
i believe the compression ratio is very high...
I ma relly disappointed
Sorry to say that those comparsion is a bit of bias towards iphone 4S.
If you guys notice, the issue with the arc is mainly due to the high compression. I don't understand why SE wanted to do this . Be it photo or video arc loose due to the noise level and lack of detail, which are caused due to high compression and bite rate.

Its a CMOS sensor, not CCD. The phone they used to test is the arc S.
I read their review of the arc S and gsmarena commented that the camera output of arc S is somewhat different from the arc. The arc's camera performed better.
You may try checking the reviews of arc and arc S if you want.
The high JPEG compression is one issue here as majority of the pictures ranged from 500KB to 1.80MB (based from my experience and all photos are full 8megapixels)
I tried camera advance and camera fx, you can choose the JPEG compression but when I viewed it on PC at 100% magnification the picture has the same details as the default camera app.
I think the JPEG format processing of the arc itself is the problem. The X10 has more details and larger file size btw.
Perhaps gsmarena used the default settings of the camera (auto scene recognition) during their test. They did not bother at all to choose manual settings imho.

Yeah but if you read carefully the summary, every camera there has some problems.
I'm not biased, I use an Arc & compared it to iphone 4.
iphone 4 came out much better except during really low light settings.
So iphone 4s must be be even better.
Shame really due to the high compression rate. Also I own a xperia x1 with a 3.2mp & apart from being extremely slow the quality on pics is almost on par with the Arc.

I have an arc S and my wife has a iphone 4s. Iv done a fair few comparisons and it turns out the iPhone is the winner. In EVERY photo the iphone has sooooo much more detail, has better colour saturation and doesnt blow out highlights like my arc does.
Im extremely disapointed with the arc camera quality. I got way better from my x10 and c905.
When the arc s and 4s have the same sensor it troubles me to think that the sony devs just couldnt give two ****s about competing especially if its going to eat into their camera business but guess what, selling their sensor to apple has pretty much stopped alot of people from going out and buying a point and shoot wether it be sony or another brand.

True. But don't forget Apple and Android in general have another way of approaching things. Apple uses a 1-way-fits all approach in which there is very little customization possible. In UI, features, but also in camera this is obvious. This suits most (non-tech) people, but people who want to have control will hate it. In my opinion its too bland, closed and boring. But it works, so that is enough for a lot of people.
In android the user is the king. That means you have to know what you are doing to get the most out of it. Using the auto-setting is not as fine-tuned as it should be. SE and other Android manufacturers have many phones and setups to consider so making perfect auto-settings is out of the question in most cases. Apple had a much easier job with only 1 phone to tune. But most of us won't use auto-settings anyways. Even on normal-mode with middle-of-the-road settings you get better results than auto-settings on the Arc, which is very unpredictable.
I've compared both and they are very similar and subjected to taste. On auto the 4S is definitely better, that has to be said indeed. But if you care about those things and don't care about looking further than your nose than you should be better of with the iPhone experience anyways.
If im not mistaken, when I watched Iphone 4S keynote, I remember when they introduced the 8MP camera sensor, and said that they "have done something to the sensor, we added additional lens to for better picture quality and..."
so same sensor on the Arc, but with a little modifications made by Apple to make it better?
Too much compression on Arc is very irritating

That's interesting comment because I also own X1 and also think it has amazing camera, I made amazing shots with it.
But I still think Arc camera is amazing. Also in low light.
It even got camera of the year award. Honestly X10 is a little worse.
The only thing which can spoil the game is compression.
I can't comment about the original arc since I have the arc s but I do know the camera could be much better. Is it possible that the arc s camera may not be as good as the original arc? if it won best camera phone award I don't see how.

Well I don't know, the overall quality incl. night shots plus features?!
The funny thing is to go carefully through GSMArena comparative test.
In some areas X10 is the best of all three (X10/Arc/iPhone 4s)
but in some it loses.
iPhone 4s has great detail but - it makes too bright pics! Just look at ISO 12233 chart, which is grey but on iPhone it's white, lol.
P.S. Just compared Arc S/Arc/iPhone 4s and definitely there are spots where Arc S performs better than Arc, and tiny bit better than iPhone.
Arc S and Arc cameras are very similar but not identical.

That's not the problem. 28fps is plenty enough for smooth motion. The video recording just sucks in general on HTC phones. Even the official "two girls walking into sunlight and then turning back to smile" video is jerky and not completely smooth. HTC is claiming they have OIS, but I don't see any evidence of it at all. In fact, disregarding jerkiness, the video just really really sucks. The colors are completely off and overly red and gaudy. The motion of objects in the video have a nauseatingly awkward movement to them. The details and colors are all smeared looking and cartoonified. It doesn't look natural or real at all. All these issues are evident in the HTC One X, Sensation, Desire HD, etc. They are not unique to the HTC One. I've been *****ing about how terrible HTC's video recording is for years now, and even now in 2013 it's still the same old crap.

Those vids could be early software design.
On my epic 4g touch I get crappy video with AOSP and great video with the stock rom. My AOSP vids look like these vids being posted which is simply due to un-optimized codecs for the processor.
I'm sure this wont be the case with the final builds.
HTC is claiming that the UltraPixel camera on the HTC One will be able to capture 300 percent more light than competitors. You can shoot 1080p HD videos, HDR videos and there's a single LED flash for even better low-light shooting.

The Speria pics look worse than my E4GT.
I've been in the camera bix for years and one thing is for sure, if you pack more dots into a smaller area the dots are then smaller. Less surface area means less light hits it and therefor less color spectrum capture and less light band capture. The reason SLR cameras can hit the higher pixels is due to the CCD size. The CCD is WAY bigger in the SLR than any cell phone so it can capture more color spectrum and more light bands.
I for one think that the camera in the HTC One will really stun people when they actually use it next to their old phone.
I have the same problem
I hope HTC focuses on an update. It took forever to get anything when I have the evo 4g
Every video or picture I've seen from the HTC One (especially the videos) have looked average to flat out bad.. Really hope this is just due to insufficient software optimization and will be corrected before release as right now it's not looking too good.

I've heard this liine a I've heard this line a million times, for dozens of phones I've followed through the years. Either from delusional people, from fanboys, or just simply ignorant people who don't follow this stuff closely. Images taken from the demo unit that's trotted out to the press when it is announced will not magically grow wings and transform into something else on the final product, especially when there's only a few weeks til launch. Even going from alpha stages, with the final camera hardware is decided, the difference is marginal. You really think they have to start from the ground up building software for the camera for every single new smartphone? Like a puppy who is blind at birth and it's eyes open after a few weeks? It is not only ridiculous, but it has never been true. Xperia Z - Camera test/comparision

HI,
So, I'm one of the few who is definitely not happy with his new Xperia Z. Having had my go at the screen, where I understand things might get mixed with personal taste I decided to have a look at the camera.
I took some photos today with it and also with my Galaxy S2. Images on the left are from the Sony.
Full size images:
Samsung: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8p9lsf08oa1l0rq/Samsung.zip?m
Sony: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ep5vco70vgqh5yz/Sony.zip?m
You be the judge
Edit: One interesting thing is image size in MB. Images from the Sony are significantly smaller than the ones from the S2 even though they are 12MP vs 8MP (last image from the Sony sampes is 9MP)
Cheers,

Can you upload a video sample too..nobody seems to help me with this..can you help uploading the video sample to dropbox i really want to check the video quality.

shame on sony felt it would be like this.........they produce sensors for most device manufacturers but they keep poor sensors in their devices
will never return to sony in near future
Thanks for the post. I have S2 and have been waiting to buy either this phone HTC one or s4. I can cross xz off my list. Very disappointed at sony

Either you're good at Photoshop or your phone is faulty. My camera is better than the S3 + iPhone 5 even without looking in depth. Same with the screen, as always, anyone who gives any care about "viewing angles" is idiotic. You don't hold your phone sideways.
The XZ in my opinion is everything I expected maybe more. Stop *****ing.

Definitely agree. Since the op made this topic, I've done side by side comparisons between the GS2 and Xperia Z and no way in hell is the s2 camera better than the Xperia Z. The s2 over-saturates all the colours. The XZ takes a picture of the object as it is, it doesn't try to bloat it with over-saturated colours or try to richen the picture which I like.
How can 8mp sensor takes a bigger pics than 13mp sensor?

if the OP had said GS3 camera maybe it would have been worth a look, but a GS2 camera doing better then XZ...well..
Lol at this post. Check the images closely..

ever heard of compression levels

I had a camera trial with my mates iphone 5, the Sony lost on all but daytime shots, so not happy with my Z Even my old 4s takes better night shots than the Z, and the half second lag before it takes the picture makes it feel like a 5 year old cheap digi camera.

Thanks man. This seems to be the truth. Sony didn't make the effort with camera or speaker. The speaker made me laugh when I tested it in the 3 store. Really wanted to like this phone but too many negatives to jump in for a two year contract !

Nothing wrong with the speaker louder than sg3, also the cam is good on this i think people are trolling and chatting bs.
To everyone saying that the Z has a great camera can you please attach some photos (straight from the phone please)?
The samples on dropbox are completely untouched, the other images are just put side by side on Photoshop to get the screenshot.
Sony clearly under performs, specially in color reproduction (wrong wb) and less sharp images. On the second sample you can't even perceive the small cracks on the sticker while they are perfectly visible on the sgs2.
So please, attach some photos. Maybe I have a defective model, who knows. But I've looked around for camera samples and they all look the same.
I do, however, believe this is a software problem. Too much noise reduction and compression. There is no way a JPEG that has more pixels and is, on average, 30% smaller is size has more detail
May be a sony hater, sammy's spy doing some ****ty work here.... i dont think he will be seen here anymore ... he knows he is caught.... heheehhe
I can see that everyone here appears to want to believe the camera is great, but that isn't quite the truth. Check some sites like GSMArena - the camera doesn't fare that well in comparison with good 8mp shooters from last year in fact. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, I mean those 8mp weren't either by cellphone standards, but I think it is fair to say that it is a bit disappointing considering the increased mp count and supposed sensor advancements.
The thing that I am curious about is the file size. It seems common sense to me that if 2 pictures are in the same format then the larger file will have more detail. Is it possible that we can make the XZ compress the pictures less (maybe take pictures in a better format) and have a much better result???
