Currently on an EVO 4g trying to decide if I want the Evo 3d, Moto Photon, NS4G, or stay on my Evo 4g and wait to see if the next Nexus comes in the upcoming months to Sprint.
My question to the members here, what is the NS4G community base like? Man NS4g users and devs out there? My hesitation is that the phone may have been passed up by many for the upcoming "super phones" resulting in less of a community = less community dev work for the device.
Thank you
For the nexus s 4 g we got miui and cm7. There are also some cm7/aosp based roms as well. We also got Trinity kernel and also netarchy. Honestly we got all the big names it just may seem like we have a little amount of roms. As for if you should get it, it's all up to you. I for one will only use a nexus product, I'm too attached to aosp to go use sense or touchwiz. But I heard the sgs2 might be coming out soon, that device is wow.

Seems like there is a great community here. If you coming from a EVO 4g you might want to stick with another phone like EVO 3D. The Nexus S 4G comes very bland. However you can customize it very easy. You have to be better than a advanced user to stick the NEXUS S 4G. As far as something like touchwiz, there is a mod.. Touchwiz needs alot of work to be done to have it completely ported over. People in this community seem more concerned with other things and have a bad taste for something like touchwiz.

Thank you for the replies, they have helped but still not sure which way I am going to go.
Been looking at the benchmarks and see they are fairly even, some say the adreno is better, others say the 540 is better.
I had horrible luck with CM7 on my original Evo, while other AOSP roms ran like a dream. Leads me to wonder how AOSP will be on the 3d. But with Ice cream comes dual core support and I would assume the 3d at that point would pull ahead of the NS4g in performance, making it more future proof for me over the next 2 years.
Anyways, thank you for the responses.
Is the miui bugfree for the nexus s 4g yet? Ive still yet to root my phone lol, been waiting on miui to be stable...

MIUI, Salvage Mod, Ultimate Droid, and VaelPak AOSP preview were the most stable AOSP roms I ran on my Evo.
Now, each have their own issues, but they were stable and responsive. One thing that seems to be a mess across all of them is a less than stellar wifi signal compared to when running Sense, yet another thing that makes me worried about going with eh 3d, it's horribly annoying on the Evo 4g.
How "future proof" would you say the NS4G is? Will hardware acceleration keep the phone capable for another 2 years yet? I also want to check out the 3d screen in sunlight, huge geocacher and the Evo was terrible in sunlight.

Can't speak for the Evo 3D but the NS4G is nothing short of fantastic in sunlight... YMMV though.
The NS4G will have more developer support most likely, performance isn't going to leave you hanging, however the Evo3D does win the specs war.
Future proof in what way? The hardware is going to be capable for years to come I imagine... software wise a Nexus phone is the definition of future proof. You will be getting updates directly from Google, likely for a very long time to come.
The Evo3D has more bells and whistles, while the NS is more of a enthusiasts phone for those that want pure Android, the latest updates, a large development scene, etc. Gotta pick your poison from there.
And honastly there alot orf "CUSTOM" sense roms for the evo that have the alot of the same tweaks with just different themes already mixed in. But to not to discredit anyone i cant make hide or hair of software

So I was browsing the forums yesterday eating leftover christmas food. I literally spent some time on diff development sections and noticed the EVO has an AMAZING community. I am an epic 4g owner and can't help but admire the amount of development, the bountys to get certain feautures and roms going.
There are also many other popular devices like the i9000, nexus one, g2. MY question is, what is the most popular phone with the most active DEVELOPMENT on XDA? Is it EVO? NEXUS? Who is the king of the hill?
Also, what phone is the successor in terms of development is it nexus s?g2?
the evo has a pretty deep community, in my opinion one of the best, i would also say that the motorola phones have good support and both nexus phones will continue to have very strong support. You can't go wrong with an evo in terms of the community and yes i have heard the epic has very scarce pickings

Go check out the CDMA hero. It still has an incredible amount of dev support for being a "legacy" device. I chose the Evo over the epic essentially for the community here. I had a couple of bad experiences over in the epic subforum and decided that was enough.
I own an EVO 4g, and I absolutely love it, I never turn off my phone, has long lasting batteries, and fosure runs great with the custom ROMs and kernels we have here from XDA.
If you get an EVO, make sure your absolutely setting time aside for your new EVO as it can be devastating not to correctly root your EVO the right way. Good luck.

king is a strong word, but I think its one of the more preferred android devices just because of the potential power it has with the hardware, also it has a very strong community backing both on xda and devs websites. Not to mention the sprint network was rated #2 with consumer reports even beating out Verizon in some aspects. I know when the time comes to choose a new phone I want to make sure cyanogen has roms for it because I love CM!!!
To answer your question, I'd say it's fairly tied up between the EVO and Nexus One... Maybe even the Droid coming in a close third place.
I had an Epic 4G, I was impatient and went out and bought one the day they came out....ANYWAY....I then took my Epic back because it was a lemon....I had the Hero before my Epic and I knew the community was awesome for HTC Devices and I remember using Flipz ROM's on my Hero and remembered he went to the Evo so I returned my Epic, much to the dismay and whining of the Radioshack employees. I then went to a Sprint store a week later and got luck they had an Evo. I havent looked back since!
Having been new to android, at the time of puchase of my Evo, I feel lucky to have chosen a device that has garnered such significant support n the development community. I got my Evo on day one solely on the fact that I knew this would be the best phone ever to touch the sprint network. With all the benifits of the Epic (hummingbird, amoled, & cam), having the likes of toast, cyanogen, caulkin, flip, myn, netchry, shinzul and all the other devs responsible for the awesome romz, kernals and themes make the Evo (and other similarly supported devices) king in the mobile world. I will base all my future mobile device purchases (phones & tablets) on whether they have similar support. I'd suggest everyone else do the same!

Despite the technological advances of other devices....there has yet to be a device that has 4G, HDMI, a 4.3in screen, a large dev community, front facing cam, 720p recording, kickstand and the great build quality that the Evo has....so in my opinion yes the evo is still king...android 2.3 means nothing when u have devs that can port it over in a matter of hours....

Really? With the Nexus S coming up, the Galaxy S devices should be getting more dev work.
And I wish I could go to a Galaxy S phone. lol. I don't like the Evo's GPU.
True can't change that however there is a great community and some pretty sweet software to run on her though

I got a hold of a Nexus One about a week and a half ago. After messing around with it on XDA, if we're talking about the depth and especially quality of community support, the Nexus One wins.
Phone-wise the EVO would be the best if device IMO if not for the GPU weakness. All the features in the world just doesn't make up for something that's now so crucial for a smart phone. The EVO just came out at a bad time -- right at the end of the first gen Snapdragon. That's my own view, you might disagree so leave it at that.
I've just rooted my phone and had it since launch day. The Evo was running stock for 5 months and was getting bored w/ it. I was extremely intimidated of rooting till I found unrevoked 3. Thanks to the xda community, I've become infatuated w/ this phone and I'm constantly flashing it
I Just got my Evo this Christams eve. I used to be pretty deep into the Hero communty and was loving their roms and kernals (much respect to deca and darch). After moving to the Evo its almost overwhelming to see the size of the dev community here, and this is just one site! And yeah I understand that the only real weakness is the GPU buy Ive always known that the first gen snapdragons can still hold their own even today.
To be honest the only things I have trouble with is deciding whether or not to use my rubber case that I got with it. I want to protect it but I love the build quality of this device.
The Evo 4g will run strong as one of the top three Android phones for a least another 6 months. Thats almost certain.
I just got my evo four days ago and I am in heaven. I actualy made the jump to android using the samsung moment. I hated the device but loved android. So then I went back to my tp2. I have always loved my htc devices I have had in the past so when I found out target had the evos for 99 dollars last week I put my moment up on craigslist for 100 and sold it that afternoon. Went straight to target. I think after 4 days I am ready to root now.

I'm an epic user former hero user. I will say the epic is a beautiful phone with awesome hardware. The specs are definitely above what the evo has to offer but I enjoy trying different roms, talking with the community and just doing thing to improve my phones and the epic doesn't have that. The epic community also isn't as nice and helpful as the HTC community is, not even close. So in saying that I am actually going to be trading my Epic with a friend that has an Evo. I'm sure I will miss somethings about the Epic but I won't miss Samsung jerking us on updates and the just plain nasty demeanor of the Epic community folks.
Only a matter of time before the Nexus S takes over in dev. support. =(
Good morning everyone. I have a delima and would like everyones opinion. I switched from ATT (iPhone) to Sprint Nexus S 4g last weekend. To be honest i am not happy with the Nexus. I know the beauty of this phone is supposed to be the ability to customize and the fact that the phone has no "bloatware" loaded but i am just not thrilled with the phone.
My question is this, would it be a mistake for me to take this phone back and get the Evo Evo 4g.
Thanks in advance for everyones opinion.

Welcome to Sprint!
I have owned an Evo since it first came out and have loved it. Currently running cyanogenmod.
You are so close to the release date of the Evo 3D you might want to consider that, otherwise I don't think you will be disappointed in the Evo 4G.
Good luck.
As long as you are inside of the 30 return policy you should have no problem trading nexus s for evo.

I realize the 3D is due out soon. My only choice is to hope it is realeased before my 30 days are up and I can trade my phone in. I would be able to trade either the Nexus or the Evo so i will keep my fingers crossed.
How many days do you have left?
Hardware wise the EVO's GPU is absolutely garbage. Its about 4-5x slower than the Nexus S. The NS has the better quality display and 4G behavior is much better too. Otherwise you won't notice much difference.
Software wise the EVO 4G is a dead end compared to the NS. There's pretty much no way HTC is going to update the EVO to ice cream. Not only is the NS going to have it on day one but it'll be fully working too. The EVO will probably get a half working or very buggy port at some point. Plus as always the NS will be first in line for a ton of new Android things. Goggle wallet being a good example.
Bottom line: hardware wise the NS is a marginally better phone with the big advantage of having a GPU that is still comparable to even dual core chips. Software wise its a blow out in favor of the Nexus S.
I came from a EVO 4G and still own a ATT iPhone 4. Coming from a iPhone you'll never find a Android phone that offers a similar level of user experience. But the advantage is in Google services. Getting the Nexus S will keep you up to date and ice cream should narrow the UI/UX gap when it comes. Stepping down to the EVO 4G and sense won't help you much.

I wouldn't exactly say it's better, it's just aosp which means as soon as google finishes an update, it's pushed the the Nexus series. Personally I prefer aosp over Sense, but to the average person who doesn't root who doesn't know the difference between Gingerbread, Icecream, etc etc then a simple launcher replacement would do. Out of the 2, I would pick the 3d over the S but the 3d is not an option in this case.
3D over Nexus S. Assuming you're on XDA, you already root so getting latest AOSP isn't a concern.
And did you know HTC listens?

Android 2.3.4 with HW acceleration (specifically for dual cores), and then Ice Cream with all the enhancements to the software. I would think having better hardware along with software that makes the best use of that hardware is gonna be the reason.

I've been enjoying the limited GPU acceleration under 2.3 for a couple of days now (regular NS users were for months). Judging by the average amount of time that HTC takes to update their phones, I probably would have been using ice cream for several months before the 3D got it. And by then I'd probably would have already or will be close to upgrading to the next Nexus with a 2nd generation dual core or even quad core CPU. That's why the Nexus will almost always have a better software experience.
..and that's without saying that the Nexus is Googles playground where they experiement with new mobile services like Google wallet.
Edit: The more I think about it, the more crazy it seems. It took HALF A YEAR for any phone to be officially upgraded to 2.3 and CM7 still isn't as stable as a stock N1 or NS.

Maybe, Maybe not. Far be it from me to say so, but I am not relying on HTC for anything. Just like I am running a fully functional EVO 3d ROM on my evo with no issues whatsoever, when they said that was impossible. And CM7 has not had any bugs for a long time as far as im concerned. Been running it prior to this kingdom rom and it was spot on with every feature working. So having that option along with any update put out by the dev's here on the 3D is fine with me. I know they can make these devices run far beyond what HTC or google can or has intended them too.
EDIT: BTW, the whole 2.3 thing was caused by google. You do know that carriers were set to release 2.3, and then google came back with a revision and they decided to hold off to revise to that version before releasing instead of releasing then having to release another one right afterwards.

Last time I checked the 3D ROM port has GPU driver issues that'll never allow it to run as stable as a stock EVO 3D. CM doesn't have bugs? check out the stable or nightly threads.
Bottom line, if any of those ROMs ever shipped on a commercial product, it wouldn't fly and that's if it could go pass carrier/OEM producting testing. That I can guarantee.

Why would I need to read threads when the ROM was on my phone for the entire time up until a few days ago. Lets see My personal experiance vs someone else's in a thread. I think I can go on my personal experiance alot more reliably than someone else's...dont you think?
Because sprint might use LTE and WiMAX? If this happens by the end of the, the next Evo that supports both will far surpass the current product.
I already have high hopes for the next Evo.
LTE will start rolling out in Q4 of 2012. There were several reports about that date being solid because the Wimax contract with Clear will end Dec31 2012 and Sprint will be ready to make the switch. This is all based on contract dates and spectrum requests made through FCC by Sprint.
I just picked up the Evo on a new 2 year, but I am going to use the 30 day money back thing to switch up to the Motorola Photon 4G and ride that till the end of my contract. I'll still be in this forum though as my GF and son have the Evo 4G and I will be swapping them out to a better rom once the shipping 2.3.3 is rooted

Remember dates are crazy and that is why they change so much.
And the photon has everything I want. but mainly the wiimote attachment and HDMI mirroring. All the HD games are also really nice.
With my old Vibrant the wiimote would not connect and kinda bummed me with all the games I could play VIA my TV. So the Photon fits what I have been wanting for a long time. Also the dock and productivity apps sound pretty nice as well.
Not gonna hold off for a standard that may or may not come in some undetermined amount of time.
I'm just not upgrading because:
A) I never buy technology when its first been released. I did that one time, Palm Pre. Never again.
B) Full NAND write has not been achieved. I love my AOSP.
C) Samsung's next generation looks promising and the Photon wouldn't be bad if they unlock them bootloaders.

That hardware would have to step up to be a piece of crap, that's how bad it is.
To those saying the hardware isn't a great improvement would be wrong..its a great improvement ..even after stretching my og EVO to its limits it cannot compare to the 3d out of the box..you may say " what can the 3d do that the og cant" um I'm.not really sure but it just does said things better and smoother and faster..its very noticible with games etc... Those who are holding out due to root...well I understand that..when it is rooted it will be an incredible beast..as far as the photon ..I would rather take my og back..I.dislike MOTOblur ..
I am running my og evo4g with synergy Rom and it is awesome. They incorporated sense 3 into it and I love it. From what I can tell it has made my software basically the same as the 3d. I can't wait to see what the synergy team does with the EVO3d hardware. I'm not due for upgrade til 2012 oct anyway so I'm happy with my synergized EVO til then

The 4G is a great phone ..I loved the experience I had with it and miss flashing a new ROM every fee weeks..the devs are fantastic and have kept that thing going strong ...I will always think of my og EVO fondly
Yeah I have both phones and my OG EVO is just fine with synergy. I don't really like the EVO 3d design. Screen seems smaller due to stretching height and taking away width. I also don't like the back cover at all. Seems badly designed. The software seems to be running st a low frame rate also. Doesn't seem like a big upgrade to me. I know Im going to be labeled a troll and tons of retarded pics will be coming but oh well. The 3d seems like a gimmick and its fun for all of an hour. High scores mean nothing to me so please save the quadrant argument. Coming from a older feature phone or even a hero would be an upgrade but from the EVO to 3d, it doesn't make much sense in my opinion. Before I get chewed, this is my opinion. Maybe it will change in the next couple weeks but right now its where I stand. Oh and I didn't have to start a new thread to say this. That's not a shot at the OP either. I just see all the hate on the 3s aide of this site and thought I would add a disclaimer to my statements.
I'll save my upgrade for something different. Sense is getting a little boring.
On day to.day tasks you won't see much of a difference..I mean how much faster can it get..the one thing I will say though is that I feel my 4G is stretched to its limits and that the hardware is getting old..the soc is more than twice as powerful and the.same.can be said of the gpu..I think that eventually the differences between the phones will become apparent . That being said the 3d does have some bugs to work out..one in particular that drives me crazy is when I'm typing...if.u.scroll or touch the screen in anyway it brings up like the edit cut and paste icon..it always happens ..also I can't seem the hit the space key without pressing the period button..those are minor gripes that I'm sure will be worked out
I'm sure the EVO3D will be a total beast once full root is accomplished, I don't doubt that at all, but as is, my fully rooted, custom rom, kernel, and tweaked EVO4G is as fast if not faster in some respects to the stock EVO3D.
Obviously the EVO3D is superior when it comes to gaming and watching flash content, but aside from that, my launcher transitions faster and much smoother than the EVO3D, my browser appears just as fast in general use, apps load just as fast, etc.
The EVO3D is a great phone, don't get me wrong, but until full root is accomplished it is being held back from realizing its true potential.
I read that temp-root has been accomplished though and some have even been able to overclock the processor to 1.8 GHz, which is pretty insane. I'm sure the phone is buttery smooth at those speeds.

Yup Same here... Before I left the 4G, I was on the MiKG 2.2 and that beast was flying which made me really wait a few before getting the EVO3D, but I know hardware wise this 3D will really be a beast once everything is all said and done.

Use a 3D, and you'll see the difference, it's night and day.

Well, I have a person that is offering me an evo that is completely rootable, in exchange for my epic.. I am kind of on the fence here about this one. I know the EVO has better rom support, and everything, and I've always KINDA wanted one, but the recent progress on CM7 has me kind of wet.... Anyway, what do you guys think? Please be unbiased.

I can't even root this Evo, I'm suffering lol, but a far as you, just weigh the pros & cons on each phone and make a decision, both phones are awesome & you can't lose, but IMO the Epic's long awaited shine is just beginning!

It's more of a McPhone than the iPhone. It's the Burger King of Phones.
I have used it.. My sister has an Evo.. I rooted it and everything. If you're a big fan of Sense 3.0, go with the Evo... If not, stick with your Epic... Screen is just so much better.

No root if its stock and has latest updates.
Evo is a better phone. Plus official gingerbread and all sorts of kernels.

If you're gonna trade UP, do a 3devo, not a 2 generation old cpu on evo. That's called "downgrading" regardless of ROM community.
Basically it doesn't matter since both phones are at the end of their life, so even if you do trade you probably won't have the phone 3 months from now....

Epic blows the evo away hardware wise and were about to get gingerbread and cm7 etc etc etc and our developers are pretty solid IMO. I wouldn't do it personally. My gf has an evo and I've set hers all up and I def prefer my epic

Epic's SAMOLED screen tops Evo's washed out display
Epic has hardware keyboard, Evo does not
Epic has high quality 5MP cam, Evo has cheaper quality 8MP
Epic has superior Hummingbird chip, Evo has outdated snapdragon chip
Those are the reason I choose my Epic over an Evo any day.
Also...(although this might be more of an opinion) we might have less ROM's but they def make it up with their awesome *quality*, while the Evo has more of a *quantity*
Edit: oh, oh! i also almost forgot...we also have the power of the almighty ODIN!!!

This. It'd be silly of you, OP, to get the Evo due to it's successor the Evo 3D. Sure, the Evo has Sense 3.0 and cm7 support, but with the Evo 3D around the corner, the future of any more progression may not be so great. I say keep the Epic; the phone's community is growing more and more nowadays and the future of this phone will be much more rewarding, I guarantee.
Plus, we have Odin, so you never have to worry about bricking your phone.
Yeah, I talked to the guy and said No... I'll be sticking with the epic.... However, even though all the "evo guys left to 3d" they still have way more devs than we do. Some of their roms like Synergy look AMAZING, I really wish the Epic would get to that point in the near future.... I mean, epic is obviously a better phone, quadrant on gb pulls consistent 2800+ compared to evos bare 2100, but the Evo just has great roms...

Agreed on that. But wait until we have Gingerbread source and we should be getting some really good development.
EC05 got pretty good development, but right now our community just happens to focus on leaks more right now,
Once the leaks simmer down and Gingerbread is officially released w/ its source code and everything, we should be getting more goodies.
I really hope so... the only real devs we have are like the cm team and some of the miui team.....
Read the g1 forums. They got honeycomb and all kinds of twacked out crap. Mytouch 3g.... these phones don't get good TIL they are end of line.

Coming from an EVO, it seems like the development of ROMs is a ghost town. I'm used to there being 15+ roms that are currently being developed at a time.
So, I decided to give the NS4G a try. Where do I get started? Which are the most stable JB/ICS builds? What ROMs are still active? Also, what's the word on the official JB OTA?(Kinda why I thought I'd try out the NS4G)

Welcome ... still lots going on here. You'll need to do some reading and searching to catch up a bit, but this will get you started. Most of the Jelly Bean development is being done with the gsm devices, because Sprint hasn't released ns4g stuff. With that said, an alpha version of cm10 is in the general forum. ICS is alive and well ... quite a bit to choose from. Since you like to try out different roms, jump in ... plenty of help available.
I think this being an actual google device, we Evo users have a different meaning of "alpha" lol. Alpha meant no camera, maybe no data, maybe no wifi, SOMETHING big isn't working yet. But the CM10 thread says everything works...Is that really the case? Also, where can I find the quickest root method?

I came from the Evo world as well, and understand that people's opinions vary when it comes to definitions. The current cm10 work has all the major components functional ... but there are still issues to be worked out. You can use it as your daily driver, but expect some hiccups along the way. In my opinion, JB is a wonderful step forward in the android progression, and I'm really looking forward to everything being released for our Sprint versions.
edit: there is a giant sticky roundup that will help you with most everything, including root questions ...

As far as ICS roms go, you have a few choices. Bugless Beast by Peter Alfonso is a mostly stock, very stable ROM with a few small modifications.
AOKP is my personal choice for the most customized experience. Included is a theme chooser, statusbar and lockscreen weather widgets and much more.
Good luck and happy romming!

Welcome to the club!
I have a NS4G as well and I've toyed around with a couple of JB ROMs and the best can be found in this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792218&page=75) but I agree with everyone above, just snoop around the pages and you'll find stuff...and I haven't heard anything about OTAs yet, but the CDMA kids are left way behind GSM devices so don't have high hopes -_-
Welcome! I had an Evo too. CM10 in the General Forum is running great. While your at it, go get your free $10 from Google Wallet and add any major credit/debit card you want.
Do you still have the Evo? If so use the NS4G for a month then fire up the Evo. You will like the size of the Evo but miss the screen on the NS4G.

Fully functional JB and the SAMOLED screen are the main reasons i'd use it. Here in ohio, I haven't seen the pads at registers for NFC. Maybe it's in the more popular cities.
I've had my nexus for over a year right now I have active backups for bugless beast and slim ics for stock and provision, aokp, and cm10 for custom options

Well, I don't miss my EVO at all yet lol.
The only things I would take from my evo is the screen size, dual led flash, the HUGE development community, and....that's about it lol.
I still have the EVO on standby just in case I get phone sick
My NS4G is running MORE than fully functional CM10, stable at 1.4GHz(my evo could barely stand at 1.1), lag isn't a factor, 16GB of internal, and the screen...the screen...I'm in love.
Rom recommendations
Once you're all squared away and rooted, I have to say I loved the new Paranoid Android for JB and SlimICS. Overall it depends how you want to use your phone, if you care more about a custom UI with a tablet, or maxed out performance through Slim. I actually just went from JB back to ICS to test out which I'm happier with, and personally I love having the freedom to run super memory hog fancy launcher replacements and still have a zippy phone with the SlimICS rom. They should be coming out with jelly bean soon though
