No gingerbread leaks yet? - Vibrant General

Did samsung forget about us? The epic, capivate, and even the facinate have gingerbread leaks. The fricken facinate(the bing phone). http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...inate-now-available-for-download-and-install/

I kind of have a theory of my own.
T-Mobile just decided to drop the Vibrant, and update the GS4G to GB, and forget us.
It's most likely not true, and they could easily be building it now, but this is what I think, and if it's true.... then damn.

At this point I'm surprised we haven't seen a leak yet, I think the Epic is on its third leak. Makes me wonder why, unless its next to leak.

T-Mobile can't be the blame anymore. When froyo was released to us it wasn't an ota, it was thru klies which is Samsungs update software. I don't understand how T-Mobile can be blamed anymore. The leaks for the captivate, fasinate and sgs4g were from Samsung. Not the carriers of those phones. Tho they did include the carrier bloat ware. So maybe I'm wrong. I just want a dang leak for us vibrant owners.

Your half right, the missing part is they see no reason to update last years phones now that there is a possibility of buy out.
But I could be totally wrong about that.

Nope there are several differences including a different GPS/WIFI chip. This was discussed in detail and breakdowns showed the differences. I think you can probably still pull up the breakdown pics with the phones setting side by side.

are you sure?
I understand that GPS is broken on CM7 because there are no drivers. And when people said to use the drivers from the galaxy 4g they said no go because the drivers are different due to different chips in the two units. Plus there are pics, or where because I cannot find them now, that showed two different chips. Samsung moved away from the erricson chip because of all the issues with GPS on the SGS line.

I was wondering about this the other day, it is indeed frustrating.

the gps is the same between the vibrant and sgs4g, that's why there are now gingerbread roms with gps (since the sgs4g gb leak).
cm7 is different, it has no samsung software, so in order to use the gps drivers from the sgs4g they need to insert a layer of abstraction (a wrapper) to try and use gps drivers. otherwise, for all samsung based roms, the gps is tightly coupled with tw. if we had the source for the gps drivers, it would be much easier and would likely be working by now.

SGS4G & Vibrant are not the same, which is why our GPS isn't 100%, only half-assed

[Q] Froyo on the way?

I just read on Vibrant xda forum that Bhman/Eugene737 just posted a froyo rom on Vibrant yesterday.Does that mean Epic devs bout to have a port for us?
Check out the Vibrant xda section they have youtube video, rom gets 13 on Quadrant.
That would be ridiculous if it was made for the epic, the epic is vastly different from the other SGS phones

Let see, physical keyboard, front camera, flash, file system, CDMA radio (Vibrant has a GSM radio), 4G radio. Yeah not different at all.

Well they both have an AMOLED screen and the Hummingbird processor...
Even if you were to get the Vibrant rom running on the Epic (after taking into account the differences in the file system) the phone would still be unusable. The Vibrant uses a different radio for phone calls, and data (3 and 4 G). So it would be pretty much useless as a phone.

Agreed, CDMA is definitely the kicker as we have no way of getting that from a vibrant port. Other than that it isn't that ridiculously complicated to port it to our phone so yes once we see the fascinate get it then we will be on a roll.

But then again... Who knows?
end of November.” now
Late last week, Samsung announced that the Froyo or Android 2.2 update would finally be coming to the Galaxy S smartphone this week.
It seems that this won’t be the case, however, as the firm has issued an update via its official Twitter channel.
Samsung tweeted: “The Froyo upgrade will be available in the UK from early November and we expect all operator versions to be available by the end of November.”
So, early November could mean two to three more weeks before it lands on Kies, the company’s own Windows based upgrade platform, with operators pushing it out after that. The cause of the delay is unknown.
The Froyo update will bring a number of new features to the very popular Galaxy S, including a speed boost, full Flash support and device tethering, along with Google Maps GPS navigation plus voice guidance.

That is Samsun'g official Twitter channel for the U.K. That timing corresponds to a new press release from Samsung for the U.K. The "all operators" referred to, quite obviously, are the telecom operators in that market.
The corresponinding Twitter site for the U.S. says there is no ETA yet.
And the earlier announcemetn you mentioned was also about overseas markets.

I see where you're coming from, but no. 2.2 has not been given to any samsung mobile device other than the i9000. (that's international, however, and the update's only in the UK and Asia) Canada's Vibrant on the Bell Carrier did get a FroYo update, but that fried the internal storage, and the update was pulled.
I honestly don't care if the update comes to our device first, I would just appreciate Samsung a bit if they would have ANY FroYo update for their phones in AMERICA.

It's obvious though that this device most likely started from the ground up with 2.2 unlike the Epic so we have to wait. It's just the nature of the beast when it comes to rolling out updates to something and trying not to blow up every device already out there and then have to deal with that nightmare.

Yeah, the software provided by Samsung. If Samsung's build is buggy, the carrier obviously can't approve it.
I don't know why people keep blaming the carriers. While they may insist on certain programs or functionality, the software is ultimately Samsung's responsibility.
Froyo is starting to sound like "Wolf" to me.
No way to blame the carriers here. If it was there fault, how do you explain that all other similar class phones have had froyo for 3-4 months already? How'd those all get approved?
It's all on samsung here.
They have been saying next week for over six months.....their top selling device has become less of a priority that's all there is to it.

Eh doesnt matter anymore. We got devs doing ics, in a week or two more it'll run flawlessly.
wait.. correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the fascinate the same hardware minus the modem (cdma)? if this is the case devs could just as easily rip all the files needed to complete our driver issues on GB. if not oh well.
I believe there is something different with the GPS drivers on the Vibrant, which is why we have so many great ROMs without very good GPS.

I understand the need for GPS, but it's really a hit or miss with vibrants. I'll pretty sure i got the first run of units, so gps never really worked well for me, no matter what ROM I'm on.

MIUI-NB edition has a working gps, no need for hardware fix. but go for an older release for more stability

Yep, I'm getting on iOS in January when I switch carriers...
Oh, you said ICS... My bad...
Sorry, ICS = Different look, same nastiness. UI Latency, Adware galore, inconsistent UI across apps, poor market policing, etc.
I'm to the point where I just want something that works. Android is starting to feel like WIndows Me to me now...

Everyone has a choice. Thats why I love Android and iOS. Both have their pros and cons. I am NOT a fanboy. I can point out both advantages for both platforms, and both have disadvantages.
I'm just glad this wasn't like 5 years ago where the only choice for a smartphone = iPhone. I did own a iPhone 3GS, jailbroke it, found nothing interesting to jailbreak except to pirate apps... which i pointless to me. I prefer android, it gives me a change. But again, opinions are opinions.
Tmoble already has the sgs 2 and the sgs 4g. Not to mention that the vibrant was discontinued months ago there's honestly no point in a business point of view updating a phone there not making any money on

And this is why we need source direct from samsung
CM DROPS VIBRANT SUPPORT DUE TO 911 INABILITY:
"We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code."

Now do you see why it is so important to have put pressure on Samsung/T-Mobile to release an update to Gingerbread? This is why! Developers are talented but they can't work miracles. We need source/drivers for proper 911 and GPS capabilities just to name a few.
