lol this is whats holding them up according to them "complexity/unique functionality"... i couldnt wait any longer so i rooted yesterday and installed nero v3..... im glad i did it.
I've been running the leaks and couldn't be happier. Why wouldn't they make all Galaxy S devices the same besides the obvious radios for different carriers. Why not just release one version of the phone so the complexity and unique functionality would not be an issue?
I am also putting some blame on the carriers for molesting the phones with their crap too.
Ok ....so all the blame going on between Samsung & T-Mobile is really all Samsung holding it up???
i think the carriers wanted different versions of the phone too. I guess to set themselves apart from each other....

Well, keep the aesthetics different but leave the internal system the same (well minus the Epic since it has a hardware keyboard), they dug their own grave in this department.

At the rate sammy is going we will all be due for a phone upgrade before we even see 2.3 but knowing them they won't support it cause they want you to buy the nexus s.

i wouldnt say samsung wants consumers the nexus s.... IMO i dont think samsung even cares abt nexus s sales as subsidies and carrier variety is what really average consumers care about. plus samsung makes a bunch of money doing other things than just smart phone.

Yeah, the software provided by Samsung. If Samsung's build is buggy, the carrier obviously can't approve it.
I don't know why people keep blaming the carriers. While they may insist on certain programs or functionality, the software is ultimately Samsung's responsibility.
Froyo is starting to sound like "Wolf" to me.
No way to blame the carriers here. If it was there fault, how do you explain that all other similar class phones have had froyo for 3-4 months already? How'd those all get approved?
It's all on samsung here.
They have been saying next week for over six months.....their top selling device has become less of a priority that's all there is to it.
Vibrant + Axura 2.2.5.5 + SuperIO Kernel + JL1 Modem
You guys are getting that the froyo has to be an update and not a flash. There can't be any mistakes.

Speaking of not all being the same.. I have gotten at least seven people to also buy Galaxy phones, but most are with Verizon or AT&T. This past Friday it really sucked that my Verizon friends were able to take lots of pictures inside of the dueling piano bar because of the flash and I couldn't do ****.

samsung is holding an event on the 16th to show off the media hub on the galaxy s phones and to show off some new models. I'd expect them to make an official announcement then since they've been rather quiet recently.

eh, the G2 isn't much of an upgrade over the slide so I'd say you made the right choice.
Well with verizon's version of the galaxy s out, i think there is nothing to hold a massive upgrade to all versions back.
given that the tab is going to be running froyo real soon, the galaxy s phones shouldn't be that far behind. in fact, i think they should get the update first, but hey, what do i know
is this the latest update we'll get? will we be getting 3.0?

Gingerbread would be great and a good pr move on the part of samsung. My expectation is low though simply because they will want people to buy new phones. Gingerbread will be an easy upgrade too because out would be vanilla with touchwiz and widgets being addons. The Tab has similar hardware and it may get it, making a custom ROM likely.

Last I checked, Samsung hasn't actually offered a phone to 100 carriers around the planet, including all 4 US national carriers.
As long as a single large American carrier demands the next version of Android, we ALL will get it.
I don't see the connection between froyo and the gps fix. If it was an android fix then we should have a fix already, I expect it is firmware based.

While I am not siding with them - they really aren't the same devices. If they were we could easily port vibrant and captivate roms. There is clearly work that has to go into each variant of the SGS line. It would probably make the LEAST amount of sense for the Epic to not get 2.3 officially. Primarily because of its 4g Radio and Front Cam - features that the others lack- even though our device is probably the most complicated to get working right.

Yes, yes, for profit. We all get that they're in the business of selling phones, not giving free updates. That's why I read an interesting blog about paying for OS updates a little while back. I'd gladly pay a few bucks to get honeycomb or ice cream on a 6 month to year old phone and to have them out in a timely fashion. Then Samsung and all the other manufacturers would have an incentive to actually put out updates for phones as well.
Seriously. Everytime I open up my xda app all I see is Ginger this Ginger that..for every phone but ours. Who else is gets annoyed by this? I know it makes me cringe everytime!
Of course no blame goes to our devs who are fantastic. I applaud them for doing what they have done with Sammy's seemingly awful coding (good luck Kaos!) Wish they spent as much time and money on their software as they do on hardware! (which consequently is brilliant!)
End late night rant.

I hate this kind of response.
When I buy a phone, upgrades and updates are part of my buying decision. They're probably part of yours too. If there's a phone with a 900mhz processor and locked to 2.1, and an identical phone but with an 800mhz processor that will be supported for years, I will choose the latter. Whether you like it or not, when the operating system updates this quickly, updates are a feature.

I think the point here is that there never is any promise or guarantee of that support and I'm sorry but a sales person's word is no indication by any means. When we buy our phones we buy them as they are. To gripe about Samsung or Verizon's lack of promptness is ignorant and really annoying after seeing it so much. Normally you can trust the talented developers here to do better work anyway. The best approach is to wait patiently and support them in anyway you can whether it be logcats or donations.

This is my first Android phone (I'd previously been on an old dumb phone made by Samsung, and it'd been reliable the for all the years), and the reps said that Froyo was coming 'soon', and Samsung had already began rolling Froyo out for the Samsung Galaxy S in Europe a few weeks before- I figured it'd be at most a few weeks, not realizing that 'Galaxy S' did not include any of the phones sold in the US!
I was also fooled about the quality of the GPS, when I was first testing it out, I always thought it locked instantly, because I was always around wifi (and Google's Location services have wifi routers geolocated down fairly well). And when I wasn't around WiFi, I saw the big blue circle and assumed that was the GPS just slowly loading, not Verizon's cellular triangulation doing all the work while the GPS was just robbing my battery and doing nothing with it.
At the time, I was hesitant to go with Android. I knew that the devices were generally fairly low quality, while getting slow updates... but the iPhone hadn't been announced on Verizon, and I wanted to do application development, which is massively cheaper to get into on Android than the iPhone ($25 vs $100 + a mac).
Next device will be from a reputable manufacturer, I've learned my lesson.
I know what phone I bought. Thanks for your concern though. Also our phone actually was guaranteed to be further upgraded quite sometime ago.

Where is this "guarantee"?
And like many have said before, sales reps, service reps, and tech reps don't count. They are only trying to sell you a phone and a contract, or placate you with the current setup you already have.
Neither Samsung nor Verizon have officially said the Fascinate will be upgraded.

I fail to see how they are screwing us over. They release a new phone with the latest Android, as they should. They are updating the Galaxy S line to 2.3, including the Vibrant. Its already an official release in Europe. Some of you think its late, but how many old handsets have been updated to official 2.3 across all brands? Galaxy S/Vibrant will be one of the few.
So can someone explain to me how we are getting shafted? Did Samsung announce that we are not gonna get Gingerbread?
^ you are being to logical
The original #NeverAgain that I got going was under much different circumstances, I agree. It is too soon. Then again, I think manufacturers/providers/Google need to know the demand of the consumer.
Trying to sell new phones (by slow updates), trying to save money (no OTA updates), etc... those are wrong reasons. I hate custom UI's for the reason they are used as excuses for slow/no delays too.
Vibrant owners whine too much. It is a phone, not a lifestyle.

Only 4% of android phones had Gingerbread as of a month ago.
Give it some time, it will come. Froyo was deserved, but Gingerbread is a gift.

I don't understand why it's necessary to make this an issue to boycott anyone. Everyone should know fragmentation has been one of the biggest issues on android.
If the argument you're making is valid Samsung should charge more for their phones. Otherwise you should reevaluate your valuation of the phone when you purchase it.
If price you paid = $(vibrant2.2)
And
$(vibrant2.2) < $(vibrant2.2) + $(vibrant2.3 in the future)
Then we all got what we paid for, if not then you should reconsider what you expect from android.

But how are they? They've updated us to Froyo like we asked and now the whole Galaxy S line will be updated to Gingerbread. Please show me all the other OEMs devices that have actually seen 2 major updates. Hardly any.
If you people would take a look around you'd not only see that as of late Samsung has been getting better, but almost every other OEM is treating their customers worse.
I can't wait for 2.3 either, but this isn't exactly NeverAgain material... Put down the pitchforks and wipe your tears now please.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't never again mean never again?

So how does HTC and motorola able to charge the same as samsung yet provide all the needed updates? The Evo is already getting or gotten 2.3, most of the droids are getting it as well....doesnt sound like a problem with price like you put it, more like a problem with manufacturer, thats why my next handset will be from someone else.
My old crappy MyTouch 3g had froyo months before my Vibrant (which was sold with the promise of froyo in a couple of months or so) every did. BTW the MyTouch did not have froyo promised, hell not even eclair was promised

Now what gets me is that the Nexus S (90% the same phone as the vibrant) has had gingerbread since 2010, we are now getting froyo

Might be because of the fact that Motorola Droid's are limited to only Verizon and the Evo's are only on Sprint? Samsung has different versions of the Galaxy S across all the carriers.
yep the I9000 just snagged a leak of 2.3.4.........
figures!
I think its awesome their devs got that testie Honeycomb out! Its seriously ridiculous and not something anyone would run daily but still thats friggin titz!
Lets get out the pitchforks!!! Dam magenta!
Meh, I never expected T-Mobile to get GB out quickly.
U.S. Carriers will always lag for the reason that they NEED to have everything their way.

Samsung is simply not a good brand to buy in the US. Outside of the US may be a different story buy I don't think I'll buy another samsung while I live here.what I don't understand is why samsung can't just work with the open source community and give us a leak.

Well, to be fair:
1. It takes time to make the outfits
2. Most conventions are sweaty, expensive...
But, nerd girls are hot.
I'm getting used to this. No surprise at all!

You must be living is Samsung's ass since you are so well acquainted with the relationship between the manufacturer and the carrier. I know the carrier has a lot to do with it, this is why i suggest samsung work more directly with the the open source community. If you weren't so concerned with being a troll you may have noticed the suggestion. Now instead of spending your energy trying to tear people down, why not just crawl back into the hole you dropped out of and stfu!
Well at least samsung got custom rom so its not that bad

Do you realize what a "CONTRACT" is, i know it may be a big word, but try to give me your attention span for a minute or two.
Samsung... has CONTRACTS. CONTRACTS prevent them from doing stuff.
CARRIERS bloat your phone for a few months and prepare their own software for it. TMOBILE is BUILT into your phone, even if you unlock it and change carriers, TMOBILE is still there.
Oh and the hole might be---- never mind, i won't go there...
CHEERS!
