Archos 70 Gen8 best rom - Gen8 General

Hi There,
Please can someone tell me the best rom to install as of speed
Any Help would be great
Many Thanks

I'm not sure if you've looked at ROMs for the A70IT... but there is only one choice if you don't want the stock one.

urukdroid but is that any faster?

Honestly the speed is just about the same, as Uruk really isn't a custom ROM. It's a modified version of the stock ROM, because if $auron were to change the whole thing, the Archos media playback features would be lost.
If you have full R/W root on the stock ROM, they can be just about equal in speed.
I guess Uruk can be different (faster or slower) depending on what kind of file system you put it on, and if you keep it on internal memory, or have it install to an SD-Card (and the class does make a difference).
I know there are some read/write tests somewhere for Uruk, where they compare it to the stock ROM, so I bet that would help you find your answer. I'm not exactly sure where they were, but I'm pretty sure they're in the Uruk thread in the development section.

I find best performance on EXT4 on the internal storage. I have a Class 10 Sd Card, but the SD Card controller seems to use alot of CPU to R/W. The Internal seems to use less.
I do think Urukdroid is faster than the stock FW though. Things like rotating the home screen takes 5-10 seconds on stock, and 1-2 on Uruk. Apps load faster due to the Ext4 partitions, and I couldn't live without a R/W filesystem anyway. What good is rooting when the filesystem is still read only?

I have R/W on my stock firmware, via Chulri's method. Haven't been limited to R/O for quite some time now. I can't live without R/W as well.
I don't know when you last tried stock firmware, but mine has never taken more than two seconds to rotate the screen, and never even close to 5-10. I don't think I've ever had anything take 5-10 seconds on my stock firmware, other than maybe a game loading (large games take some time to load, no matter what ROM you're on).
I haven't tried the EXT4 formatting and installation on internal, as I've only installed Uruk on external storage (class 10 card), and I didn't see any significant improvement.

I've tried every firmware since the beginning, about 8 months ago. The screen rotated quickly, but it took 5-10 seconds for all the widgets to reload. Many people had the issue. I started a thread back then that showed people how to switch to EXT4, and everyone said the widgets loaded much faster after the change. Don't know how long you've had your gen8, but it was a problem for a long time. Obviously, which widgets are being used makes a big difference, but the rotation is always faster on EXT4 when compared to an identical widget layout on stock squashfs.

I suppose the widgets would be the difference then, because I don't keep any widgets on my home screen except the power management one. I've had my devices since day one (got lucky and ordered from Archos), so really the third day after they came out.
I've never had it take 5-10 seconds, that is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for a screen to refresh. I don't think I've ever seen a complaint about it taking that long over on ArchosFans. I know people have said it's slow, but never that long.

Only one widget? Yeah, that would make a difference. I have Launcher Pro with 4 of it's widgets, plus beautiful widget, dazzle widget, google voice widget, google search widget, pandora widget, lcd/tv widget, and wifi manager widget.
Altogether, it took 5-10 seconds on stock, plus a few more seconds for beautiful widget to reload it's skin. Now it takes 2-3 seconds on Uruk.

I use 2.1.08 with ADW launcher. That solves any rotation lag. It seems like the stock launcher is the culprit as far as slow screen rotation. If it had 1GB app space it would be perfect!

And why don't you have that?
Harfainx has posted a solution for that.

Try chulri's app partition resizer: http://code.google.com/p/archos-gen8-sde-rooting/downloads/detail?name=AppDataResizer_v0.1.apk
Or install Urukdroid...
Both will give you a 1GB data partition.

JacxHero problems

So first off, id like to thank Jac and Drizzy for the wonderful work they have done on the OS, its BEAUTIFUL! The only thing i dont quite understand is why is it slow even with a class 6 SD Card? I dont understand, the thing is MANAGABLE, but pressing home sometimes takes forever! a good minute or so, or when opening an application, such as Phone or People. Loading the onscreen keyboard is a bi**h as well!
Does anyone have any ideas? Its supposed to run fine when you have a class 6 and you utilize the SD card, but maybe im doing something wrong?
Someone want to help me out?
i will try to answer this in a polite way. its not made for your phone and it runs somewhat choppy even on htc hero. widgets=lag. are you using a linux-swap partition? you should be. can't remember if compache is supported, but if it is, are you using it as well? if you can use it, you should. did you reformat your ext2/3/4 (not just wiped it but straight up reformatted it) before flashing the rom? if not, you should. did you follow the step by step instructions in the thread on how to set up for it? follow them exactly. anything else... most hero roms have a slow down affect that they suffer from after a period of time, so could that be it. hope some of this helps.
As David said, Hero is laggy on the G1, and it's gonna stay that way. This is mainly because the Hero has 288mb of ram, and the dream has 192 (that's a 96mb difference). There's no way we can fully make a up for only having 2/3 of the ram from the Hero, but linux-swap and compache is all we have. I found that a 64mb linux-swap partition on JacHero 2.73 works pretty well.
It's like running Windows Vista Ultimate with Aero on an Intel Celeron D Processor and 512mb of ram.

download overclock from market
and then set the max settings to 385 and minimum to 380.
hero roms run best at 383mhz
and plus download and flash jacxhero 1.1 its a lot faster and smoother than 1.2 i noticed and i asked other and some noticed as well
what i dont like jac's rom is the ease of flashing...everytime i flash i have to reinstall apps.but in drizzy apps u can flash any of his apps wichout wiping ext3
so far drizzy 2.2r2 runs best out of all his roms.

Problems with MT3G speed/lag

Hello, ive been having some issues with my MT3G over the past few days and ive noticed my phone has been lagging a lot even after rooting, installing latest cyanogen rom and using compcache. here is my setup:
mt3g 32b
cyanogenmod 4.2.11.1
Compcache default settings
lock home app in mem, otherwise i get reloads
i think the problem is that random apps keep turning on by themselves even after i kill them with advanced task manager. phone lags, i check task manager and apps like amazon mp3, market, messaging (i use handcent), locale (i now uninstalled it), settings and other random apps and i never launched any of these apps. so i kill all the apps, the phone runs fine and fast but about 1 min later other random apps load again and i have to rekill them. what gives? ive tried wiping and reinatalling to no avail... why does everyone else seem to have constantly fast mt3g's when i have essentially the same setup?
Seriously, no one?? Come on guys, at least someone has some advice?
have you tried changing your linux swap instead of compcache? Also, have you tried the ram hack?
I'm not sure why you have those things turning on again. I don't have that problem with my mt3g
double post
Thanks for the reply, I don't use linux swap (apps2sd?) considering the phones internal memory is quite a bit. I read about the ram hack but I use the phone for gaming quite a bit so I don't see how I would benefit from that. If linux swap really does make the difference then I guess I have no choice. The only thing that worries me is the sd card wearing down because of it although it doesn't seem to be much of an issue with G1 users or am I wrong?
linux swap is not apps2sd. it gives the phone more virtual memory that it feeds off the memory card to make up for the lack of ram over the 32A. ext is where the apps are stored for apps2sd, but the phone does not need that.
The ram hack only makes 3D gaming suffer. Games like ProjectINF, RoboDefense, Pacman, etc don't suffer from this. Even then, some 3D games still work fine for me, like Toon Warz.
And not the SD card doesn't really go bad, it has on some people, but even then, most sd card come with 5 year warranties. My transcend comes with a lifetime warranty, so you shouldn't worry about it.
Thank you, that cleared up a LOT of my confusion! I read somewhere that Amon_Ra's recovery image will setup linuxswap with one of its commands (partitioning?) or am I mistaken?
it partitions it into the 3 sections. fat32+ext+linux swap. This is what I did. However, this will give you the ext which will transfer all the apps to your sd. you can however, delete your ext if you don't want that using parted in adb. from there, you can use the swapper app and set it to your liking. I use 64mb and 40 swappiness.
Thanks for the help Tazz, linux swap made a difference. There's still a small lag sometimes but much less than before and less frequent. By the way, swapper seems to have been removed from the market for some reason.

a2sd installation

Ok, so I followed some instructions I found to see if a2sd was installed properly, and it was, but I've installed some apps and my free memory inside my phone is around 33 MB... (not ram) Anyone knwo why a2sd would be installed correctly according to the instructions I used, and why the phone says I have such little space left?Last time I checked, it was 99MB

There was a thread just like not more than 30 minutes ago.
Anyways, check your widgets load out as they could be pre-fetching or eating your ram. I had a similar issue and ram kept dropping until it was around 29MB. Weird thing is that I then wanted to try to setup an alternate setup on the stock launcher, and when I tried loading a widget there, it forced closed the launcher and when I checked my memeory at that point, it was back solid around the 110MB point. I switched back to Sense with my widget setups and had no problems since.
you might also try to not use things like pre-fetch on widgets such as News and Weather, and shut off auto updates for items you don't use.
You can also just ry removing all widgets and starting again to see if that does the trick.

Not ram... not ram... not ram.... phone memory... the internal phone storage.
And I was wrong, its not down to 33... it used to be near 100MB free, now dswn to 71.83MB free space. Not ram
But while I am thinking about ram, I start up with around 78MB free and consistently run at around 58MB

[Q] How to Keep Sense in Memory

Hello Desire HD world !
I have a problem really annoying with my DHD.
Sense is rebooting very often when the device is out of memory (it always happens at the bad moment ).
I experienced the same thing with my Milestone, and problem was solved by adding the line ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 in /data/local.prop, and then system took memory on other apps, and LauncherPro stayed in memory.
Sense does not use this file, I tried to create it, but nothing happened.
Any idea ? Because with so much RAM, I don't understand why Sense is not kept in memory, there is a lot of useless apps loaded !
Thanks !
PS ; I use the last stock ROM with no taskiller.
Up !
Nobody has the problem or nobody knows how to fix it ?
I have been noticing this as well. It's pretty annoying to turn your phone on to use it, and have to wait 20 seconds for the launcher to start!
You'd think they would be more aggressive with keeping it in memory, as there are plenty of apps sleeping in the cache which should be removed before Sense.

I would say get rid of some apps that you don't need. I have everything I could possibly use, and still have well over 700 MB left. To use all the memory you have you must see some apps you downloaded just to see what they are, and don't even use. If you actaully do use them all then I don't know what you can do unless some can be moved to a SD card.
I think you misunderstood the problem .
The memory is the RAM, not the ROM. I still have about 700 mb free on my device.
But when a lot of programs are opened, Sense is killed by the system, it does not have the priority, and I don't understand why.
Oh sorry. Yeah misunderstood. I use Mini Info from the Market, and my RAM usage even under heavy use barley gets to around 200 out of 623 available. Maybe there is something stuck that is using up so much memory. Do you have a lot of widgets on your home screens? Also do you restart often?

I have one widget on each screen. And I make a restart every morning.
Maybe the Live Wallpaper is the cause ?
I am the only one having the problem ?

No you're not! I just had Sense restart on me RIGHT NOW, after installing and using Catch Notes.
Ok so issue is real.
Without Sense no problem to keep the Home in memory.
Weard.
Do you use the Spare Parts app?
No spare parts, everything is stock, except the root.

Apps on SD Card Sometimes Disappear

I'm having an intermittent problem where the apps which have been moved to the SD card often (but not always) disappear. They do not show up on my launcher (ADW) and I am also unable to install or update any apps. I haven't seen anyone else reporting a similar problem, but the weird thing is that the same thing happens on my daughter's Epic. Here's what I do know:
1. This only happens with Froyo ROMs. It was happening on my phone with SFR 1.1. I installed a Gingerbread ROM (Swiss Cheese Samsprint) and it went away. However, my daughter is on stock (but rooted) EC05 and the same thing is happening with her phone. Additionally, I installed Urban Inception (a GB ROM) and did not have the problem. But I missed the speed of the custom kernels, so I returned my phone to Froyo (this time SFR 1.2) and the problem is again recurring. So, it seems to be 2.2-specific.
2. I have used Odin to return to stock several times, that has not resolved the problem.
3. I have formatted my SD card (once using Windows and again using the format option on my phone) and that has had no effect.
4. When I boot my phone, the apps on the SD card do not show up in the app drawer. After a few minutes, they often appear, but not always. Again this is true on both my daughter's phone and mine, but only with a Froyo ROM.
5. The phone will usually get through two or maybe three new app installs or updates, then all the rest will fail until I reboot. Again, this occurs on both my and my daughter's phones, and only with Froyo. It doesn't matter if these are market apps or Amazon appstore apps. Once one update or install fails, nothing else will install or update until I reboot the phone.
I suppose I could solve my problem by going with GB, but those ROMs are so much slower than the Froyo ones with custom kernels. Also, I like my daughter being as stock as possible, because she won't mess with her phone and can't always give it to me to fix. I doubt it's a hardware issue because we both have it. But, it also doesn't appear to be a ROM issue, since we have different ROMs. Since it's obviously not common, it must be related to either an app we have installed or something strange that I have done (though her phone has nothing done to it but the one-click CWM 3.0.0.5/6).
Anyone have any ideas for me? I suppose my issue will resolve once we have official GB and custom kernels start appearing for it, but I thought it was very strange that I have two phones that both exhibit a problem that nobody else seems to have.
Thanks for reading all this.
This had been happening to me for a while too. I don't have as many apps anymore and keep it all in the phone and noticed better battery life but still want to be able to use apps2sd

Yes, on both phones.
I just noticed this yesterday. I saw Angry Birds had updated but I didn't get notified in my market. The app was still in my launcher though. Don't know if it matters but I hadn't played it in a long time.
Reinstalling worked and didn't lose any data.

I've had this problem too on the MidnightRom v5.2. It's especially annoying when my kids want to play Angry Birds and they are all installed to the SD card. I have "fixed" the apps not showing up in the App drawer by creating shortcuts on one of my home screens to the apps I have on the SD card. When the apps don't show up in the App drawer, the icon on the home screen looks like a generic "Android installed app". The apps I have on the SD card are: apps that came with my Rom (Video Editor), Apps installed from the Market and Apps installed from the Amazon App store.
*I've noticed* it's more common the icons don't show up in the App drawer or have the wrong icon if I unlock my phone before it completely boots (finishes the Scanning Media twice in the status bar).
edonnelly- if you are "missing" an App, try creating a shortcut for it to see if it's in the Applications list. That way at least you can launch it if you reboot and the app isn't showing up in the app drawer.
schnowdapowda- I'm also using my stock 16gb Samsung microSD card, and I've also formatted it with the same results.
Fast Boot option may be the culprit
This is actually a long-standing problem in Android OS, going back at least two years (donkey's years in this technology!)
Something about the interaction of the OS and an sdcard formated for holding apps creates odd behaviours.
Lots of complicated suggestions have been made, including reformatting sdcard, reinstalling ROMs, changing launchers (the one suggested here) and such.
None of these approaches seems really to solve the problem even in most cases.
What seems to be working for me (at least for the last week or so) is the following very simple tweak.
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report anything further on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873670
(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (especially now that the chosen thread no longer is the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins)
