Hello, ive been having some issues with my MT3G over the past few days and ive noticed my phone has been lagging a lot even after rooting, installing latest cyanogen rom and using compcache. here is my setup:
mt3g 32b
cyanogenmod 4.2.11.1
Compcache default settings
lock home app in mem, otherwise i get reloads
i think the problem is that random apps keep turning on by themselves even after i kill them with advanced task manager. phone lags, i check task manager and apps like amazon mp3, market, messaging (i use handcent), locale (i now uninstalled it), settings and other random apps and i never launched any of these apps. so i kill all the apps, the phone runs fine and fast but about 1 min later other random apps load again and i have to rekill them. what gives? ive tried wiping and reinatalling to no avail... why does everyone else seem to have constantly fast mt3g's when i have essentially the same setup?
Seriously, no one?? Come on guys, at least someone has some advice?
have you tried changing your linux swap instead of compcache? Also, have you tried the ram hack?
I'm not sure why you have those things turning on again. I don't have that problem with my mt3g

Thanks for the reply, I don't use linux swap (apps2sd?) considering the phones internal memory is quite a bit. I read about the ram hack but I use the phone for gaming quite a bit so I don't see how I would benefit from that. If linux swap really does make the difference then I guess I have no choice. The only thing that worries me is the sd card wearing down because of it although it doesn't seem to be much of an issue with G1 users or am I wrong?
linux swap is not apps2sd. it gives the phone more virtual memory that it feeds off the memory card to make up for the lack of ram over the 32A. ext is where the apps are stored for apps2sd, but the phone does not need that.
The ram hack only makes 3D gaming suffer. Games like ProjectINF, RoboDefense, Pacman, etc don't suffer from this. Even then, some 3D games still work fine for me, like Toon Warz.
And not the SD card doesn't really go bad, it has on some people, but even then, most sd card come with 5 year warranties. My transcend comes with a lifetime warranty, so you shouldn't worry about it.
Thank you, that cleared up a LOT of my confusion! I read somewhere that Amon_Ra's recovery image will setup linuxswap with one of its commands (partitioning?) or am I mistaken?
it partitions it into the 3 sections. fat32+ext+linux swap. This is what I did. However, this will give you the ext which will transfer all the apps to your sd. you can however, delete your ext if you don't want that using parted in adb. from there, you can use the swapper app and set it to your liking. I use 64mb and 40 swappiness.
Thanks for the help Tazz, linux swap made a difference. There's still a small lag sometimes but much less than before and less frequent. By the way, swapper seems to have been removed from the market for some reason.

My phone is kinda slow and i was wondering if it makes any difference where i save my programs......Any suggestions on what to do?
I just got my phone and installed a recommended app called oxios.
A friend of mine had the tmobile wing, and it was operating really slowly too. I beamed that app over to him and it made his phone operate much much better.
I'd store stuff on your card, keeps the phone memory free to use and then its also removable if you want to loan some data to a friend or something.
To get Oxios, look at the thread I made called "Sprint Mogul must haves"
Yeah I agree...
Most stuff can be put onto the card.
I only put onto phone storage the stuff I use ALL the time or stuff that HAS to be there or running in the background(like MSVC, dialers, themes, sounds, etc)
I use wisbar advanved desktop and S2U2. I installed THOSE to phone memory along with various themes. It is running all the time and is quicker waking up when the phone rings etc. Ringtones should be on phone memory also.
All my games, other apps (like oxios, gps maps, youtube player, tvguide, aim, etc) are on the card. Because those I use/run them and when I'm done I close them.
Hope this makes sense....
I tried to download the file but it wont let me...do you know somewhere else i can get it? thanks

Generally, it won't make your phone slow if you have a lot of items loaded in local flash ROM. What typically makes it slow is having a number of background tasks that are running. Do you use taskmanager or something to close the excess junk?
Typically, if you have a program that runs on the today screen or in the background, load it in local ROM. If it is huge or seldom used, load it on the storage card.
If you install an app on the storage card, it may be a little slower to load into ram when you start it. Usually that isn't a problem though.
Ok. so I was thinking of installing manila and the opera browser. should i install them on the storage card?
I wouldn't put either of those on the storage card. As worwig said the speed of your device has only to do with the processor load, which can never be too much since the ram will never allow the titan to over bombard the processor. So, it really all boils down to open ram. The more you have generally the better proformance you are going to get. If it is really bad to the point where you open your phone and you have to wait more than half a second for the screen to flip I would recommend a hard reset or more effective install dcd's 3.2.6 or 3.3.4. Then install each program soft reset and find which program is causing the memory drain.

I personally prefer to save larger or less frequently used apps and all backups on a storage card. Just in case I need to do a hard reset or something goes wrong. Also a good practice is to have partial backups so if you need to get raid of some apps you could restore only what you need.
Have Fun With Technology.
For some reason, I don't see too many complaints about low memory issues - yet I have always had problems with my RAM.
I have almost all of my programs installed on my SD card to try reduce any of my memory usage - but if I run PIE, MSN Messenger, or try to play music, I almost always have low memory messages come up.
I usually have one program running in the background - Slide to Unlock - but as far as I know its not that memory intensive?
Any insight on how I can fix this?
Thanks!
Are you running an elf or an elfin? If your not sure.....go to start-->settings-->system-->device information-->hardware. What does your RAM size read? If its 64MB its an elf.....if it says 128MB its an elfin. Your saying you've installed all your applications on the storage card. How much free space do you have for program memory on your phone? Your phones needs free memory in order to run applications too. Perhaps its running low on that end? Two things you should do:
1. Move any extra files, photos, videos or anything else that you might have saved on the phone memory to the storage card. Use activesync. Its faster that way.
2. Clear out your browser history and temp files. This could most probably be your culprit as they take up space too...and you don't necessarily see this upfront. Goto Start-->Internet Explorer-->Menu-->Tools-->Options-->Memory Tab.

I've been having "Insufficient memory" errors while trying to run SpB Backup, and have deleted all sorts of applications, but nothing seemed to free up enough memory. Then I tried your advice, and everything is working as it should!
Thanks!!
I have an elf - usually when I close all of my processes, except my stumble to unlock, I'll have approx. 15mb/47 free in my program memory. 10/28 of my storage space is free.
I've tried to clear all of my temp files... even made it so that all my temp files/PIE files are put on my storage card through SK tools, but still have the same issues.
As soon as I run my HTC music player with the one or two background apps, it almost always pops up with memory issues. Browsing with PIE is almost impossible for any period longer than 5 minutes.
I've tried it with several configurations and I always have the same results, even if I have no background processes - I still have the same issues.
Are you using a cooked ROM? Come to think of it, I never had many problems with the original shipped ROM. I was normally running S2U2, PocketMusic, Opera Mini and SpbMobileShell back then.
You mean to say you can't even run one application at a time without running out of RAM? Soft reset. And if you use SKTools like you say you do, try running Free Up RAM, select all options.
In your shoes I'd probably move everything I want to storage card, (you should want more than 10mb storage) try a hard reset and install my most used apps again. Oh, and what is your PagePool size? Try here to find out about that. It should be 4mb.
Your primary problem is indeed the fact that you are running out of space on your phone. 15mb for program memory especially on heavy usage is quite insufficient. Especially if your going to be multi tasking and running several applications at once. I would move ALL my installed programs and anything else I may be able to get my hands on, to the storage card. Try to squeeze out atleast 25-30mb out of your program memory. This should give your phone some more breathing space.
This might be to use of you to try it out.

hi
I had the same problem before but now my touch runs fine now & haven't got any issues till now. Use advanced task manager and pocket mechanic. These application will keep ur pocketpc in good shape.
Very good, Thanks.
So first off, id like to thank Jac and Drizzy for the wonderful work they have done on the OS, its BEAUTIFUL! The only thing i dont quite understand is why is it slow even with a class 6 SD Card? I dont understand, the thing is MANAGABLE, but pressing home sometimes takes forever! a good minute or so, or when opening an application, such as Phone or People. Loading the onscreen keyboard is a bi**h as well!
Does anyone have any ideas? Its supposed to run fine when you have a class 6 and you utilize the SD card, but maybe im doing something wrong?
Someone want to help me out?
i will try to answer this in a polite way. its not made for your phone and it runs somewhat choppy even on htc hero. widgets=lag. are you using a linux-swap partition? you should be. can't remember if compache is supported, but if it is, are you using it as well? if you can use it, you should. did you reformat your ext2/3/4 (not just wiped it but straight up reformatted it) before flashing the rom? if not, you should. did you follow the step by step instructions in the thread on how to set up for it? follow them exactly. anything else... most hero roms have a slow down affect that they suffer from after a period of time, so could that be it. hope some of this helps.
As David said, Hero is laggy on the G1, and it's gonna stay that way. This is mainly because the Hero has 288mb of ram, and the dream has 192 (that's a 96mb difference). There's no way we can fully make a up for only having 2/3 of the ram from the Hero, but linux-swap and compache is all we have. I found that a 64mb linux-swap partition on JacHero 2.73 works pretty well.
It's like running Windows Vista Ultimate with Aero on an Intel Celeron D Processor and 512mb of ram.

download overclock from market
and then set the max settings to 385 and minimum to 380.
hero roms run best at 383mhz
and plus download and flash jacxhero 1.1 its a lot faster and smoother than 1.2 i noticed and i asked other and some noticed as well
what i dont like jac's rom is the ease of flashing...everytime i flash i have to reinstall apps.but in drizzy apps u can flash any of his apps wichout wiping ext3
so far drizzy 2.2r2 runs best out of all his roms.
I am running into the issue when I try to run an app there isn't enough memory. I don't have anything running in the back ground. I find that if I delete all my sms/mms it removes the problem for a while until it fills up again. I guess my question is what else can I clean out to gain more memory. I thought I was saving everything I could to the SD card. How do I isolate which programs are using the most memory? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!
Sincerely,
Lou
Clear Temp & Install to Storage Card
Hello.. I was having the same problem as well. I bought this phone about a month ago and I love it. I started getting a memory error, and eventually the phone stopped receiving texts and notifications. Very frustrating.
I searched online and found a helpful page and then decided to reinstall apps to the storage card. It takes some digging but you can also find tweaks for storing email attachments, temp files, etc. to the storage card (haven't checked, surely the folks here at XDA have suggestions to make this easier). Finally I discovered this really cool little app called cleanRAM.
I've noticed an improvement. Mainly because it seems the HTC apps sure love to eat up local memory and make things run rather sluggish on the Imagio.
I started with the "Troubleshooting: HTC Imagio (Verizon) Sluggishness/Freezing" over at the HTC forums.
(I guess I'm too new to post a link. Sorry!)
And then thought really long and hard about installing software to the storage card. I figured because I never remove it, and its a 8GB card, probably not a bad idea to start doing it.
I had to really think about it because I prefer to save my storage card space for music and pictures.
Anyway, I would install anything system-related such as file finders, registry editors, .Net CF, today launchers, Gyrator, cleanRAM etc to the device. Everything else such as Google Maps, 3rd party browsers, games, GPS utilities, etc. is now installed to the storage card.
I just found this today and it seems to work pretty well. Try searching for "cleanRAM windows mobile" in Google.
Hey XDA folks.. surely you guys have placed more tips and tweaks elsewhere for this sort of thing, specific to the Imagio..??
The only thing you should install to the device itself are things like MODS, not APPS.
ESPESCIALLY NOT the CF Framework. It is hugh!!!
As a general rule... MODS to Device. APPS to Storage Card
Hey, so I'm slow..
I haven't checked back here in a while. So I'm a little slow!!
Yeah, you know I never really gave much thought to where to install software to, and got into the habit of always internal. Ever since experiencing the memory issue on the Imagio, I changed that habit pretty quickly.
What I find interesting is, if a techie like me had all these "problems" I can only imagine what non-techies must go through. I feel bad for them, because if they would read the manual, take time to research Imagio memory issues, and take the time to tweak their phones they wouldn't have so many problems!
Anyway, thanks much for the tip. Been wanting (yes.. wanting) to do a hard reset just to clean things up and to install mods and apps in the right spots.
My only concern is with Bing. When I do the hard reset, I probably won't even start it. I miss the old version. It's installed to the ROM, correct? So should I accidentally start it and it automatically upgrades, where should the upgrade go.. internal memory, or storage card?
Ok i am new to Android i just traded my iPhone 3G for a HD2. I spent around 3 or 4 hours trying to get it running the way i like. After many errors i am on NexusHD2-Gingerbread_V2.9_NAND_(Android-2.3.5) and i am very happy. So now i need some help and yes i did look around before i am asking this. I read on a forum that i could install my apps onto my memory card and not into the phone is this true for the OS i am running now. And also i wanted to know if there is any apps i may need to make my phone run better even some cool apps i make need just to be happy/
hi razielleonhart, I believe you're referring the to the ext-sd function. To do that you'll have to repartition your SD card. You can do that in CMR (I believe you are booting form NAND?). Normally just choose a ext partition size and set the SWAP memory to 0 (I'm not sure what the SWAP is for, but I think it's to compensate your RAM if your RAM runs out of space, but that's unlikely on the HD2). When you boot back into Android you will notice that your "internal" memory has increased. Not all ROMs support this, and you'll have to check the thread on the particular ROM to see if the developer has cooked his ROM for that.
And you might want to check out some cool (but sometimes slightly hazardous apps) like SD booster (sets a new cache size on your SD card to make it run faster, just search the market) or SetCPU (allows you to overclock/underclock your phone's CPU, see link at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419).
