With so many GS2 users, I hope Samsung will take the GS2 seriously and fix current problems (battery, etc.). Also, It seems HTC lost much of its sales power (it seems that the Sensation simply can't compete).
To be honest it's not really a fair contest, as the iPhone 4 is last year's news. If iPhone 5 would have been released today, I think we know who would have won...
the linked page - not saying the facts are correct or incorrect, but come on, no source and no actual numbers? this is extremely amateurish.
and to your point that iP4 is too old to be compared to SGS2 I also want to add that UK sales of SGS2 are really actually INTERNATIONAL sales because many people from outside the UK bought their SGS2s through UK channels. Thousands a month I would estimate went off shore.

iPhone 5 would have won, we all know that. But I think, they wouldn't have won by "as much" as last year. Just look how many (of course I'm talking about the UK here) solid iPhone users have moved over to Android, or more specifically the GSII.
And I love how Apple release their iPhone - or at least used to - release their iPhone when it was the only thing in the market. Give speculation, tempt users to wait, they then see the flashing iPhone and then say, "oh that device I wanted a couple of months back is old now" So let's just get the iPhone 5.
This year (depending on when Android 4 or Ice Cream is released) it'll actually be vaguely fair. Of course Apple will win because Apple have a product cycle of 1 year. Each iPhone lasts about a year before their software begins to cut off features (to make up upgrade to the new one) and their marketing makes the older model should rubbish. Android phones (the top band) are meant to last longer, so there's no influx of sales. The sales are spread across various manufacturers' flagship models and over the course of the year and over the course of Android updates.
And so if these phones are released within a week of each other (which they won't be because Steve Jobs won't do that....he'll probably delay it) the sales, IMO won't be as huge as they were for the iPhone 4. They still win, but by not as much.

Look at this:
http://www.samsunghub.com/2011/06/10/over-a-million-galaxy-s-ii-activated-in-south-korea/
1 million SGS2 devices sold in South Korea alone in the 4 weeks of May (!!!)... (just to compare, it took the original iPhone 74 days to reach 1 million users, globally !)
It's hard to comprehend that by now, there could be several million owners of SGS2 globaly. This is insane !!!
Edit:
Here is a comparison regarding the SGS2 vs iPhone 4 sales:
- iPhone 4 sold 3 million devices in its first month (Globally).
- SGS2 had 3 million pre-orders globally (that is, before it started to sell).
I think that the SGS2 might be the fastest selling smartphone, ever.
The more SGS2 Samsung sells the better the support will be, so keep on buying

At lest better than HTC, I cant even remember my Desire getting Gingerbread and even tough all the new sense versions were running just great on it HTC never oficially ported them, they just didnt care at all and pushed phone after phone after phone while samsung ported gingerbread and at least seems to help the community (donated cyanogen devs etc.). Compared to the rest of Manufacturers Samsung actually had a great support even for the sgs1 and I doubt sgs2 is getting a worse one.

Even if you are right (and those 3 million pre-orders are not already at the hand of customers), we already know that it sold 1 million alone in South Korea (in 1 month), and it hasn't even started to sell in the USA, which is the biggest market !!, there is no chance that with the US market included it will fall behind the iPhone 4 sales.
I'm not going to explain in a 10 part post, but daivik is really smart and bullseye on topic. Everything he/she said is on the money

Hmmm, let me think about this.... If someone comes out with a jackhammer that men can use to sodimize themselves with and it outsells the sgs2 would I care? No. I really dont care how good a piece of hardware it is or who likes it, just aint my thing. So it is with the iphone, if others enjoy it and like how their hardware functions and what it does for them, great. Let them sell a gazillion to those people and let them pour the coals to it. Its got nothing to do with me.

I was just skimming the thread, before my post. And I got the impression that a few were saying that the GSII sales weren't as high. And so I just wanted to give my opinion why and shed some light on the fact that you've always got Apple loyalists, and basically how that is under real threat. And that threat will only grow for Apple in the future.

If the carriers in the US allowed phone, I believe it would be selling quite well.
Just my .02, but i almost guarantee if the phone was functioning, sales would be awesome!! Either way, I love my two tabs, they are perfect in size, speed, and everything! Great device in all.

That is from one analysts speculation. I'll believe it when I see multiple analyst with the same conclusion.
Just keep in mind that this "production halved" bull**** is coming from ONE source, an analyst named Ashok Kumar. He's not the most reliable of sources.
Here's a breakdown on his ****ed up predictions and analysis just up to last summer, and just about Apple:

I do agree that US sales would be up if it could be used as a phone tho.

I would personally think that he does make a little bit of sense on the pricing part. Despite the great features, performance and stability, the price is a too high compared to IPhone which is heavily subsidized when you signed up with some carriers. Not mine but i know most of the carriers don't subsidize much for this phone.

How is that bad news for Samsung Tab owners???? I already have one and yes the price will drop but I knew that when I bought mine.... I wanted to enjoy it now and not wait to save a few bucks....
The price drops on everything and there is always a better device on the horizon...
Phone should have been working. Price? Can't blame them for attempting to match Apple, but think the advantages at coming a /bit/ lower would have outweighed the loss of profit per unit.
Least they can drop the price now/offer more features. If they'd have started low, as great as it would have been, if sales had been crazy off the wall, they'd never be able to raise the prices.
So...
Maybe, there's probably a bit of truth to it. If there's a whole load of bundling announced soon (which will be the first step, not dropping the price) it'll be telling.
We'll see.
Not selling well
Here in Thailand it is hard to get your hands on one as it seams the first batch has been sold out.
Hey guys,

I was in a Swisscom shop yesterday here in Switzerland, and they mentioned that they can't get enough in Stock.

Did i become impatient and pay the full price? hell ya. am i regretting it? hell no. This is the exact device I've been waiting for...I've played with a ton of different tablets including the original laptop - spin screen tablets...and this is hands down my favorite.
Pocket legends = wow....seriously? on a phone? its every bit as good as the original Everquest graphics were.
enough soap boxing....gonna go waste my day with PL now...as one of my favoritely mocked actors would say... "Shuck it Kumar...Shuck it loooong and hard!"
International version probably does better than North American but it should be no surprise to the carriers because potential customers having been voicing all along that:
International
Voice enabled
More competitive unlimited data plans
North American
No voice
Greedy tiered data plans
On top of that, the Tab's larger screen size is ideal for HD YouTube but there's no 4G on any NA version. I'm on Sprint and 3G buffers too much while watching HD Youtube.
looked at all the mobile manufacturer and nothing even compares to the screen size of the samsung will be released by the 1st quarter of 2011 and by far this is the dream phone i have been longing for a long time been speculating to buy an archos 70 and an android phone but the SGT really gives you the best of both worlds so enuff said this phone will definitely sell and it will have more developers working to port CFW definitely waiting for a cyanogen mod or even a Muiu would be nice

Quite possible. I saw somewhere (no source to quote) China Telecom itself has arond 600million suscribers. That's more than the population of any country bar India/China.
If you conquer Europe and Asia, I believe the company would be more than satisfied with their result.
Looks like they're well on their way to hit 10 million units sold by years end. Best selling Android phone two years in a row. Way to go Samsung!
Approximately 2 million of the 12+ million SGS 1's sold were from North America, it didn't sell that well in the United States. I predict 3-4 million SGS 2's will sell in the United States before the end of the year, if the carriers don't **** it up.

I have no authority in this subject, but I am sure that they will fcuk up the device royally. Already seen that Sprint has a different design. All rumurs point to AT&T having a different physical design/layout. Why do you have all these different versions? Surely something will miss the intended target and you will notice GPS not working or Wifi reception poor or some other piss poor performance. Just let it be like internation versions, and everything (well most things) will be in order.
Impressive.
I think Apple are in a bit of trouble, they will have to compete with the SGS2 with the iPhone 5 which with the A5 they can easily do but within 6 months or probably allot sooner they will also be up against SGS3 and Tegra 3 devices.
I just hope Samsung launch products in the US earlier next time and give Apple a real headache.

Interesting post from the Moto forums today. This makes perfect sense given the way AT&T has been going the last few months:

I was at an ATT store this morning inquiring about a laptop dock for my Atrix. They couldn't find it on their website(discontiued), then they said that the original Atrix was at "end of life" as far as ATT was concerned. I take this to mean that ATT will no longer support the Atrix and not push for ICS from Motorola for it!"

Its one thing for a carrier to stop selling a phone after that, but if the phone is only supported by the manufacture for 6 months, there is a serious issue. Especially given that a bar has been set for about 2 years by both Apple and Google on Nexus devices, and that 2 years is the length of the average US contract.
I think this is being read into wrong though. AT&T most likely is just no longer selling the OG model, not Motorola discontinuing support.
I have not given up on ICS yet, but I think it is unlikely to come to the Atrix 4G. I realized that when I recognized the Atrix 2 was a cost reduced version of the 4G. My theory is that MOTO marketing f'd up big time when they over priced the Atrix and accessories. The Atrix 2 was doomed because the Atrix name was damaged beyond reclamation.
I don't see any new phone presently available that is significantly better and some worse. Posts like the one that started this thread hasten the day when I say, "enough already" and install cm7/9.

Following up on myself, I don't understand why Moto won't just say what their plans for the Atrix 4G and ICS are and take the heat and get it over with.

I'm a little surprised Atrix is getting dropped cause it was such a big deal when it came out. If Apple makes the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen, I'm getting it. Atleast Apple won't drop support for it. That's one of the reasons Android pisses me off. Stop making 200 different Android phones a month, and concentrate more on updates. You've got phones coming out that people forget about in a month.

Feb/March 2011: Launched
Q3:
GB update
Q4:
Still GB updates
end of Q4:
EOL
im not purchasing any moto devices on older OS anymore..
should have not purchased Froyo atrix while GB was around and shall not purchase GB Razr when ICS is around..
/* Rant mode off
I still do not regret purchase of atrix; thankful to QUALITY of dev support it is receiving. Even pre-Betas for atrix are more stable than final releases of my older devices (captivate and vibrant)
But for a general user who wouldnot think of anything beyond rooting...this is kind of abuse :-/

ATT is not the only vendor but looking at the update history so far, it would be too late to expect ICS for atrix considering delay in GB update.
I believe the statement this guy posted is true regarding the Atrix 4G and AT&T. If you look on the AT&T website you cannot buy the laptop dock anymore on either the regular store or the premier store. AT&T previously told me that when an item is removed from there instead of being marked "out of stock", it's gone for good. AT&T is selling off Atrix accessories, and I do believe they are done with the Atrix. Will they still sell it?...............sure, until the stock is depleted.............will it still be around for a long time?.............sure............the refurbs will be going round and round for years to come.
What is perturbing is that this phone lasted a measly 6 months or so, as was already stated. Nobody disputes that phones come and go, new models are released, etc.............what is messed up is that people who purchased "the most powerful cell phone on the planet" were lied to about the specs by both AT&T and Moto, one case in point being 1080p recording which we never got, and have suffered lack luster support from both entities.
I love my Atrix, and will keep it as long as devs are putting out new ROM's, etc., but I am up for an upgrade again in less than 2 months, and will look for something with more support. Unfortunately I am stuck with AT&T for the time being because I have a family plan with 5 phones on it, and who would pay early termination on 5 phones?
This is my 4th Android phone. Like someone else said, 3gs was supported for least 3 years. I think I want to try an apple phone next. We shouldn't have to rely on outside people/unofficial support for the next version of Android.

The reason they push a new product every 6 months or so is reflected on the attitudes of most android forums; never satisfied, always desiring something more from their devices. People make lateral device changes (Atrix to Moto RAZR for example) instead of upgrades because there is some level of constant dissatisfaction with their Android device. Companies such as motorola are catering to this, and making tons of money in the process. Why bother support a device for multiple years when people are willing to shell out gobs of cash for Android's 'flavor of the week'? It makes more money for the company and the carrier.
You have to remember that the carrier not the device manufacturer decides what phones make it to market. Apple was wise to keep their warranty and product support in-house, and their quality and support reflects as much. Other phone manufacturers are bent over the carriers' knee. The carrier dictates how long the phone is supported, what accessories are available, and how software updates get pushed. Apple was wise to circumvent all this BS, and look how many iPhone accessories there are in every store, how Apple pushes software updates via their own program, ultimately you get an overall better product that is supported for much longer, while still maintaining profitability.
I love Android as a product, but what an abysmal business model for an open source-based OS. The only thing that keeps me going on Android are the occasional product gems such as the Atrix and the unofficial support provided from devs around the world.
Lets face it, Android owners still look to Apple as the golden standard.

i played with it in ATT store and i liked it, just not sure if i should wait a little bit

It depends on how well both the One and SGS4 sell for AT&T. If the One holds its own AT&T will keep it at $199 for as long as they can. LG's having a launch event for the OG Pro on May 1 and AT&T usually carries their high-end devices. An iP5 is supposed to be available in June. There's going to be a lot on the shelves at AT&T this summer. Based on One inventory they've stocked or commited to if it's not making its numbers expect some discounting after 30-60 days. And usually the discounting starts with the VARS; at least that's what happened with the DNA. If you find a cheaper price at a (reputable) VAR AT&T will match it over the phone.

Sigh at least say AFTER 2 year contract. I know on t-mobile the The One is $579 outright. $99 upfront +$20 a month if you choose to pay it off over 24 months.
Looks to me the DNA just had a bad release time... it was in between the other major phones

And what do you consider a release at the same time as the S4? Good time?

Along with articles releasing about Samsung having to pay kids to bash HTC? I'd say it's pretty good timing.
Releasing with the S4 isn't awful. That's the competition and people will pick what they want. Both were announced early enough ahead of time we all have discussed and watched every youtube video on them. The DNA if I am right came out in november/december time frame... it's nice, but the One is clearly better... and just 4-5months later? I'd be pissed.. and there, you are screwing your own costomers.

And I'm sure all the claims being made are totally without bias and Samsung will be treated fairly. And the supposed event occurred last year with the SGS3's launch and the "kids" weren't hired by Samsung they were working for a third party marketing company.
"HTC’s operations have weakened, impacting Taiwan’s export figures, resulting in 5 successive months of negative growth and seriously affecting Taiwan’s economic growth. In order to stop the decline, Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang today (the 10th) called for his fellow countrymen to “Affirm and support HTC, starting with loving and using their mobile phones”. This statement prompted backlash on the internet,*PTT*saw countless posts slammed, criticizing HTC for considering themselves to be a mainland Chinese brand and belittling Taiwan, [with netizens] unable to agree with Shih Yen-shiang’s point of view.Shih Yen-shiang revealed that he and the Vice-Economic Minister both use HTC phones, that the government has a close relationship with HTC, provides assistance, and hopes that everyone will unite in supporting domestic companies. Netizens didn’t show any appreciation, wit some people with angrily digging out HTC chairman Cher Wang’s past statements, pointing to her having said “HTC is an indigenous Chinese brand”, so Taiwanese officials now calling for the masses to support a ‘non-Taiwanese brand’ is truly unpersuasive."

Due to relatively high inflation rate I think the trend will no more be so good.
patient care products
less than 150. a good price
So, we all know the future of Motorola depends (maybe) on the success of the Moto X.
Do you guys have any piece of information, any personal experience in a store or anything to share related to the success or unsuccess of the phone?
I really hope it sells well.

Guy at the store today when I was returning mine said they're selling some, not a ton, and not "almost none."
Said most of the ones they've sold have been customized. So people seem to like that.

Cool!
Custom phones shipping time was pushed back from 4 to 6-8 days "due to high demand" so they must be selling well, right?
The rep at my normal store said they were selling quite a few. I was in twice before buying the card and he was really knowledgeable about the phone so it was nice to see someone actually helping people understand the value.
The 6 day thing Is hogwash. When I placed my order this past Sunday they estimated 9 days and delivery around Sept 4th. I got it 3 days later (yesyerday) I didn't even get the email saying it shipped until it was on the truck for delivery already.

Did your order page ever indicate that it shipped prior to receiving it?

Nope, it didn't. I kept checking the whole day. I got the email at about 4am on wed with tracking. The order status still wasn't updated. When I tracked it when I woke up it was out for delivery

Im willing to bet there aren't much sale going on with the iPhone 5S about to come out.
I love android and all, but a lot of people prefer iPhones.
That and to a lesser degree, Nexus 5 + Note 3
Depends on what well means. Probably a little better than most Motorola's given the marketing budget & no carrier exclusivity but it's nowhere close to an iPhone or SGS.

The rep told me last friday (there was no one in the store) that it had been like that all month, empty.
AT&T exclusivity on custom requests coupled with not releasing it at the same time on all carriers is a fail for Motorola.

its that iPhone 5S. better have android on it
And in regards to motorola failing, it is IMPOSSIBLE to synchronize same day release for all carriers unless youre apple, even then, its really hard because of Verizon. If they are in the course of a month, like the S4, thats pretty successful. The HTC One, on the other hand, thats a fail.
But exclusivity wise with the motomaker, yea, thats a fail. IDK how much AT&T offered to pay upfront, but i dont think its worth it.

iPhones have there place, just not with me anymore. I got so tired of jailbreaking and waiting months for a new jailbreak to appear after a updated version of IOS came out. All I wanted was the ability to run iblacklist. Anyway, I really want a Moto X but somehow thinking the LG G2 might morph into a N5 really has me excited. Also I'm very curious what the Note 3 and new wearable accessories might be just around the corner. Moto X, Note 3, Nexus 5, they will all be winners. Tough decisions ahead on what to get..

Same day availability isn't even a selling point of a phone & they probably made more money on the customization exclusivity period than the few random people that consider that a make or break on a purchase.

Tell that to Apple and Samsung. Instead of getting more people with Moto X 's in their hands, they will most definitely lose market share to the G2, the 2013 Nexus and the Sony Honami. Samsung was a garbage cellphone maker until they followed the Apple model, and I won't even buy a Samsung phone, but Moto would do well to follow their lead if they want to sell more than 5 million phones world wide.

SGS hasn't had same day availability but yeah you're right. If they would only come out on the same day Motorola would have Apple/Samsung success.

Uh, Sgs4 launched in late April on 327 networks in 155 countries. It sold 20 million in 2 months. Moto is calling this a flagship, that's how you launch a flagship.

I also thought moto put like 2 million into advertising and I see more Verizon new DROID than the X. I been dying for this phone but because of specs and not getting updates like a nexus I'm sticking to the gs4.

Like the HTC one? That's Verizon's fault. They'd rather push their trash on people. Sgs4 sold more phones than any phone in history, you and I have very different meanings of the word failure.
