Look what came in from FedEx today :)

The wife got 2 Free Kin TWOm's from verizon today I didnt even know she had placed an order for them. We both had upgrades available & she wanted a Solid Feature phone without having to spend money on a data plan.
Looking at the phone I really like it. Great Camera, Video & I really enjoy the Zune built it. I do have a couple of cons about the phone which is there are no hacks for it, Cant expand the memory & doesnt play games but for now I can look past that.
I cant share photo's at all till i reach 8 posts both phones have switchable OS's

Why does everyone complain about no expandable memory? What the hell does the average person need more than 8 gigs for? Alas you can play javascript games view the thread in kin two software development.

I have alot of music that I wanted to put on the phone.

What did you mean when you said they have switchable OS's?

i meant both are switchable between the TWO kin OS's. Original & the M version. Not switchable as in a different OS installed. I wish there was a way but at the moment there isnt.
I really do love the phone but the lack of being able to install a second OS & play games really hurts this for me.

Well, how many feature phones do you know that can install a second OS? Much less have the power to run any other OS like WP7 or Android? There's only one other I know of and that's the HTC feature phone from AT&T. As for music, an average song is only 3-5 MB. 8GB of storage gives you.. lets see about 2,000 songs. That's quite a lot of music for one person to listen to.

well the good thing is, is that the phone does support AAC format so that does help cut down the MB of the song.

Hello all, just joined today as I ordered a KIN TWOm yesterday. It might be here on Friday. I like many of you have wanted a feature/smartphone but did not want to shell out the $$ for a data plan. I am almost always near a wifi and that will be fine for me.

I would do it also, if i get paid for it (no one locally would buy it, rofl). Then buying a chinese android to code code code for it .

No micro-sd slot, why bother (for most)?

Unless planning on only using as an ereader and web device, the less than seven gigs of total usable storage between apps and data/media storage kind of makes the device pointless.
Why bother? Especially people that dwell in these forums.

I dont know, I'm more of a "glass is half full" person. Considering the price point and Amazon's excellent return policy, I dont see the harm in getting it into your hands and deciding then.

I for one do not use a huge amount of storage space. I don't keep music or movies on my phone. But the SD card is still useful for backing up my apps and data. I'm mostly concerned about how the lack of an SD card is going to impact your ability to hack stuff.
As long as I can hack the thing to run stock Android, I don't care about the lack of an SD card.

I think it's best to think of the built-in storage as cache. Amazon is trying to everything on its cloud. Books, videos, music... all stored on their cloud. When you need it, it'll cache it locally.
Same goes for backup. No need to backup to a SD card because it'll automatically be backed up to their cloud.

I think there is a certain missed point here that the author felt was going to be picked up. (Correct me if I am wrong.)
First, you can only keep AMAZON purchases in the cloud.
Second, while the processor is impressive.. they ripped out a lot of "nice" things which would have been cool to have.. I mean if it didn't have dual core 1ghz processor.. it would just be another "value tablet" or hell it would be frowned upon more than that due to the lack of bells and whistles.
So, the problem we have.. Is if you plan on doing anything besides ereading you are out of luck.. (and lets be real here.. if this was only being looked at as an ereader, it wouldn't have a forum here.)
Since you can't load whatever you want to the cloud, your stuck with 8 gigs which might be "ok" if it was *ONLY* an ereader.. However, honestly.. by the time you root it.. install the latest version of Cyanogen and possibly load a few songs on there.. most of your space is done.
Aside from that, the fact that it has no optional SD card slots may complicate the rooting/unrooting process. I would buy a Nook Color for 50$ more, because I can run CM7 from an SD card and not void my warranty since I could dual boot it. Especially if the kindle fire ends up unable to go back to stock.

Except with new nook colors on the way, the original isn't going to cost more than the fire anymore. I can imagine new condition original NCs going for $150 or less over the holidays.
The fire is a sweet tab at a nice price and I've been eagerly awaiting details all summer, but for some folks the slot is going to be important. I boot my TP2 android build from the SD card, and I like the low risk nature of it. Not sure if with a NC I would go nand or sd, but I like having the option.

Honestly for 150$ i'd probably grab the Nook Color..
unless the lenovo A1 was priced the same and had equal dev support.
I'm definitely holding off on kindle to see what else comes out... I am wondering if others are going to try to beat kindle to the punch.. or if they are going to think it is worth it..
I mean it is hard to compete if amazon takes a loss on hardware in hopes of making it up in software.

Ive got a Viewsonic gTablet which has around 16GB of internal space
Ive run Cyanogen and it takes up maybe a half a gig of room, that would leave around 7GB of storage
most of the apps I use are installed on and stored on the internal parition which is around 2GB, so that leaves around 1.5GB of usable space of which my apps take up about 500MB
out of the 14GB I have on the second parition of the 16GB onboard SD card I have 9.3GB free, and its storing all my ROMs...
I use less than 5GB for storage, so 8GB seems like plenty to me for now
I wont be keeping terabytes of video and music on this tablet so it doesnt matter to me personally
even with my gtablet I use less than 8GB, I stream most everything I watch on it as well
wouldnt be any different for the Kindle Fire...
I would prefer some kind of external storage option, but thats ok, its not required

A SD slot would be nice but not that big of a deal. I already have my on
pre-order. Most Rooting and Roms can be done with out a removable SD
card, the Nexus S 4g doesn't have a removable SD. I have rooted and gone
back and forth from stock to custom works just fine.

Exactly.... Why would you want the ROM on the SD card? I guess its to keep stock on your phone? But I thought we were the ones that didn't care about stock and were pushing the envelope... Well I came in at Droid 1... We didnt have SD card option back then. You either voided your warranty or you did what Verizon told you too. So I ask you this... When you your own Admin on your own phone... can't you write your own Warranty?

Er.
I will push the envelope. I have CM7 on my captivate.. The issue is I can odin to stock.
There isn't always an easy way to go back to stock. And if I'm going to get a kindle fire I am going to use it as a full on tablet.
I already have over 8 gigs in play on my phone a lone :/
I have no problem flashing, rooting or anything else. If I completely break my device and it is my fault, I'm not going to make someone else pay for my mistakes.
On the other hand, I always want a way to go back, in case of faulty hardware which does happen time to time.
So even though it isn't dual core..if your going to flash anyway.. it makes the nook color a bit more appealing.. especially since it will probably get a price drop soon :/

Hey, to each his own. you know? We don't have to agree I hope the Nook works out for you brother. Personally, I am going with the fire I don't have a need to return faulty hardware and if I do I will figure it out when I do.

Where did you get this information from? I have been searching for an answer as to whether non Amazon content can be stored and I don't see any indication that it can't be. Currently you can store non Amazon content in their cloud. I hope that holds true for the fire.

A micro SD card slot would have been nice.
But for $199 I'm not going to complain. It has superior hardware compared to some of the tablets priced in that range.

Dropbox will give you another 2gb cloud storage for free and you can get tons more cheaply if you need it.
Since I stream everything, I don't get what the fuss is about no SD card.
Same as the people fussing over the lack of cameras, mic, bluetooth and 3g. I have a phone to take care of those things plus I'll just use my phone's 4g wifi hotspot to get online if I need to.
The KF will be just perfect for instant on email checking, light web browsing and some book reading. For $199 it's great value.

Amazon has their own storage service that they want to sell you a subscription to. Also, having no SD card makes a little more difficult to hack. No doubt Amazon watched the NC get hacked and not used to buy B&N products and want to ensure they get additional revenue for the subsidizing the cost of the Fire.

Says nothing about non amazon content. I could be wrong, really seems to me like thus far they are doing whatever they can to prevent hacking and limiting the cloud usage would be a pretty good way to do it.

Err.. I think this is subject to debate. I may be sitting around christmas going "Man wish I'd have pre-ordered earlier!" However, the Lenovo A1 is also coming out, there are probably going to be even more tablets now and they are going to be even more competitive.
Really.. the Amazon Tab is lacking. I mean I hate to invoke the name, because it seems to grant instant flame wars.. However, We crucify another brand which is very popular among the general population for these kinds of tactics.
I mean I really feel like all people are reading is "IPS screen, Dual core, 199$" which is a very compelling device.. however, it is a pretty hard sale.

dropbox won't give you anything last I checked. It requires you to have however much space you want to use on the actual device.
To me 3g is a ripoff anyway I will admit. Camera's aren't something I require on every single device I buy.. and honestly.. blue tooth is cool but not a prerequisite.
I really just think expandable storage (especially on an 8GB device) would be highly beneficial. I mean If I am wrong and you can throw whatever you want on the cloud I may reconsider.
The other issue I have.. although not a deal breaker.. is it looks like no physical buttons.. I at least want a back, home and menu.. Admittedly I have that problem with nook too but, it's w/e.

With music, if youre a paying cloud drive member, you have unlimited space for music. I think as it stands you can still buy an album and get upgraded to the 20 gig plan.Which means you have 20 gigs of space for whatever it is you want.

Is it really? How much storage soace does the average person need? Not the person ripping in loss less, not the one ripping blue rays, but someone that rips 128 mp3s and just wants to bring them around? That is the group manufacturers need to cater to. Not us who will make virtually any device into whever we want it to be.

Dropbox for mobile doesn't work that way.

Why can't Note III have normal SD Card capability

To those of us who like to store hundreds and hundreds of full album MP3's encoded at FLAC would love to have more phone storage.
With the NOTE being such a large phone, I sure hope Samsung designs the NOTE III or IV to have "normal" SD Card capability. Not Micro. Since the normal (or next size up) cards have twice the storage capacity.
Whacha think?

While it would be nice to have more internal memory, you can put in a 64 GB microSD and it will likely be read (the Note 2 can already read them). MP3's don't necessarily have to reside in internal memory, so why not just use a 64GB micro-SD instead? ;The price is down to under $50 if you shop around.

won't happen !!! by the way Samsung has invented a technique which will allow sdcard to be as large as 128GB or more...and faster than current technologies..maybe wait for Samsung S 5 and Note IV maybe..I doubt if note 3 would come with it

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

I already have one. But I can't fit my whole music collection on it. Even at 240kbps VBR.
I would ideally like to have about 500GB so I can carry ALL of my favorite music.

For that, you'll probably need otg. Meaning a short cable or adapter with micro USB male at one end and female USB at the other end and that will give you the ability to connect a 512GB USB to your phone!

Dude that is crazy. Wanting to 500gigs. Even if I had that much music I would carry it on a 512gig sdd or HDD. The note 2 has otg so it is easy to swap info as needed. I carry drivers and other miscellaneous because I do free troubleshooting and fixing old people's computers. I would to have 128 or even 256 SD cards but I wouldnt mind a 64gb note3 with 64gig micro SD. That would be great and less compromising.

I am 100% with you although it's not just music I would fill 500GB with.
I have a 500GB SSD on my laptop and ideally I would be able to carry ALL OF MY FILES on my smartphone. Android, unlike the other toy mobile OSes, can do practically the same things a regular PC does and the Note II's display is big enough (still small for me though) to ENABLE taking advantage of all of the Android's capabilities.
Plus, there always are Allshare Cast, HDMI out, BT keyboard and mouse and USB OTG. In a pinch, Android smartphones can perfectly act as PC replacements (god I love this stuff and god I hate the guts of crap like iOS and other such dog sh*t!). I travel a lot and live abroad for several weeks at a time, on shorter stays I am not even carrying my laptop anymore.
I am one of those who always buy the biggest internal storage variant and the biggest external memory card which fits, at the moment I have a 16GB Note II with a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, if 64GB or 32GB Note IIs were sold in Europe I would have gladly paid for the biggest internal storage option available (plus, of course, the biggest fitting memory card).
The cloud is GREAT but ONLY for backups and quick syncing of SMALL files across different devices. Using it in place of local storage is for non-powerusers...
I hate it so much when I am out and about and I need some less-used file which I am not keeping on my Note (for lack of space...) and I have to retrieve it via Samsung Link (which, BTW, itself is awesome).
As for your idea of using full sized SDs, I would be all for it especially since I advocate 6"/6.3" smartphones and we are saving "so much space" with "wonderful ideas" like micro and nano SIMs (...) so I believe they would fit but that's not going to happen. We are going to have to wait for the normal evolution of micro-SDs' capacity.

Maybe you should ask Sammy to make a note with multiple compact flash slots so you can put twice the storage capacity.
For me 64gb is enough. I just hope they skip 16gb models. To small for for my needs.
I don't do cloud computing because I don't have internet access everywhere.
Anyways I also heard and read about a person who modified his note 2 to have 288gb

So get yourself a 1-terabyte Seagate Wireless Plus drive and use that (or stick it to the back of your phone). 802.11g/n, 1TB capacity, rechargeable battery and, best of all it can act as a bridge to your regular wi-fi router so you don't have to keep switching access points. Comes with a USB 3.0 adapter so you can load up your music fast. Android app available at the Play Store (some people seem to think it's Apple only. It isn't).

What kind of thread is this really? From the title, it sounds like you have already established that the note 3 doesn't support "normal sd card" and then you say I hope it'll have normal sd card..... Makes a lot of sense.

And hopefully, somehow, Samsung will take notice of my request or someone else's and implement massive storage into the Note IV.
It's far too late for the Note III, and possibly too late for the IV as well. These things are already being designed well before the previous version is even released.
USB-OTG... a great solution for keeping your storage in a particular location. Not much good if I want to suddenly have access to all my storage when I'm at a friends house though.

I'm not a newb. I know what my CURRENT options are.
This thread is about hoping for future, BETTER options as far as storage goes.
And yes, multiple MicroSD cards in one phone would be a suitable alternative.

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

The 64GB "limit" doesn't actually exist. It's just that there are no larger capacity cards. If you align the pins or use a correct adapter you can use a 128GB card without any problems.
OP, I hope you're actually ripping the FLACs from a CD or getting them ripped, converting MP3s to FLAC won't do you any good.

I'm sure Sammy would do it, but at what cost? The unlocked model of the Note 2 is already north of $600 ... even with carrier subsidies a phone with what you want would cost at least that, probably $2000 unlocked. All the fun and games that would make it possible just isn't worth it to me. No smartphone is.

$1400 more for a SD card slot compared to microSD card slot... sounds legit

A better solution would be a phone with 2 microsd slots. Wouldn't cost a small fortune.

Google updated the security policy of external storage since KK.
The resolution of screen is 2K now.
Not only the quality of taking pictures and videos got better but also the size of them got bigger.
But Google just let microSD go away again.
I don't know why really.
It seems Google 'hates' or feels 'disgusting' about microSD

Google will never Include a MicroSD card slot in their Nexus line ever again, they're trying to push for full internet connectivity - grabbing everything off the cloud, which would make expandable storage useless in their eyes. That's all good for countries like the US and UK who can get unlimited mobile data plans for dirt cheap, but those of us in other countries with less ideal data plans are left having to decide between a nexus with limited data storage and a inferior phone with an SD card slot. It's just how it is sadly.

I don't think it's all about making us use the cloud. There could bentwood more possibilities I believe;
1) there are many different types of cards out there with different read and write speeds. Having a big storage with low speeds could lead to lag and general slowness..
2) Having a "removable" storage gives you an option to "remove" it, say, for media exchange. But a storage contains two types of data; user objects like musics, pictures and secondly apps which has some files inside of the actual storage also. So removing this storage may fail some apps to run. Companies prevent that by not letting people to store their apps inside of SD cards thus damaging the point of having an "extra" memory.
So I believe having an big internal storage is always betterb for these reasons..

Cannot speak for the UK...but the USA is a land of laughably capped data plans. most ISPs be they landline or cellular cap your data usage laughably low. The "cloud" will die a quick death, between data caps from fat-and-happy ISPs and internet non-neutrality.

I can think of solutions for everything except pushing the cloud.
Filesystems are a dime a dozen. Just require a non-patented one. Tell the user what's going on prior to formatting it and that they can put it in a windows machine and format it to use it elsewhere. Most people don't swap them about that often. Using a security aware filesystem would solve the problem with apps accessing other apps data as well. Other than root, but rooting the device makes the users responsible for the outcome of giving apps root permission.
Speeds, meh.. Do a test and warn the user that the card is slow. Even crappy slow cards are more than fast enough for all except the higher bitrate HD videos. And few people have constant access to networks faster than even the slower SD cards.
Removing the storage doesn't happen that often. And would happen less if they didn't use a windows compatible filesystem. Apps2Sd is a ridiculous feature when even small phones come with 16GB. It made sense on the G1. Not so much now. When formatting the card, warn the user that apps using that storage might have issues if you remove the card. I don't know many normal users that remove the card, other than to upgrade to a bigger one.
Bigger internal storage is always desirable. However, I think it's ridiculous to remove the card option for users that want it. 64GB is about the level where I can get away without the card, so I will probably end up with an N6. But I find it irritating that Google removes the option. Particularly since I can't think of a reason that isn't self serving for them to do it.
But it is what it is. That's just how they do it right now. If that's a deal breaker for you, you will have to find a different device. I wish they would put the hardware there at least. Even if it required a custom kernel to enable it. But it's not likely to happen anytime soon.

I wish people stop *****ing about the MicroSD slot already.

Yeah, those people with slow and/or limited data connections who have a need for a lot of storage on their phone are sooooo ridiculous and unreasonable. Google removing MicroSD all together in a future android update is completely the right choice. Consumers should have limited choices in everything they do as should phone manufactures...... Long live blindly following everything Google does and never considering anything but a Nexus cause everything Google does is so right and amazing....

I don't know why many people don't/fail to understand a simple basic thing about Google, Google makes money when people are online.
Google's fundamental business strategy is - do anything and everything possible to make people go online and spend as much as time as possible on the internet (Free Android, gmail, chrome, drive, Cheap Google Fiber, Google express, failed Google glass, upcoming Self driving cars etc..), so that Google could serve you more online ads, make money on your searches, clicks and would also get more data about your online activity which would enable more data mining.
with SD card in the phone people potentially would not go online as much compared to a phone with no SD card/less built in memory, that's why no SD card in the Nexus and also why Google is trying to kill the SD card support in lollipop.

The lack of a microSD slot makes it hard to decide between the Nexus 6 and Note 4. I don't know why Samsung is able to do it but Google not.

Because it has nothing to do with ability. It's a choice, plain and simple. Why they make that choice is debatable, but anything we think is speculation. I generally go with "follow the money". Google gains if people are using the cloud more. But that's just opinion.
It's not a technology issue, every one of those I've seen trotted out is easy to work around.
Between the note 4 and Nexus 6... The biggest difference is touchwiz really. People will say that AOSP roms will be made. And they are right. However, note 3 still lacks a fully functional AOSP that is as stable as stock. Even if you don't care about the missing hardware support like NFC. The stability just isn't there. It's gotten much better recently, but I'm stuck on touchwiz because of it. So if you buy a note4, be sure you don't mind that. There's nothing wrong with that choice, it's a great device and looks like it works well.

The iPhone doesn't have an SD card and you don't see those users complaining. Why not just get the 64GB version and have more than enough space for photos and stuff? For the average user (which Google is targeting) they won't need more than 32GB of space, let alone 64GB.

I too wish Google would leave in an SD slot as an option. That said, I suspect that 64GB is more than enough storage for 90% or more of users, so I see why they leave it off the Nexus line. I think 64 will be more than I'll need in the next 2 years so I'm not really concerned. I may load up a 64 GB OTG solution with movies for when I'm traveling.

But at the time same if Google was really that concerned with making people use the cloud why would they offer 64 GB? Why not stick with the Nexus 4 mottle of 8/16GB? That makes more sense in the pushing people to the cloud argument.
I love the cloud, but like most people I don't have unlimited data or perfect signal everywhere I go. Options are key. That said I will still get a Nexus because I love everything else about it (minus the non removable battery) and I've had them all so far. And USB on the go is not very convenient (I've used it for a couple years) for what most of us want to use them for. For a plane ride sure, but not practical for daily use.

A better question is.. why don't we have minimum 128 gigs of internal storage? Hell even 256? How expensive is it for companies to include this much storage? Apple does, so why can't Google?

With ART, the cache run partition for apps is going up quite a bit in size. Like double. People who needed Apps2SD on 16GB phones might still have problems with 32GB phones under ART.

This is one of the truths. The other is that Google finds cloud storage the more viable option as well.
But in all honesty, if you seriously need more than 50GB of storage for your phone, you seriously have a problem with transferring files off of your device and to a computer/server. Even with my Nexus 4 I never exceeded the 16GB/12GB the device had available for storage.
I move my pictures and video to my external HDD once a month, move the ones I share often to my G+ Photo drive so I can always access them when needed.
I hardly keep music on my phone aside from when I make them into ringtones/notifications. I suggest any diehard music fan to simply get a PMP if you want to listen to music while on the go. PMP's have an independent battery and last FAR longer than your phone will, plus it will not drain your phone's battery and PMP's have proper quality sound compared to phones where it just works fine but does not offer true quality sound. Plus a PMP will allow more storage options as well for those with the insane music collections like I do.
Seriously between these two things, the only thing that has ever been close of a threat to taking up my phone storage is my ROM backups, which I never keep more than 2 at a time on my device since they eat up storage so often. Again they can be put on an external drive whether it be your computer or personal server.

I always wanted to get myself a shield tv but I have a couple of questions:
I'm going to get the 16gb model and connect a spare 120gb 850 evo ssd I have laying around to it's usb port, would I be able to use this drive as internal storage?
I'm importing it from the us and I would need a us to eu adapter to plug it in, does the power brick support 240V?
How well does the game streaming work? I'm planning on just directly connecting the shield tv to my laptop via ethernet and streaming games that way, would that work?
How is the audio quality via the controllers headphone jack? Since it's main use will be Youtube and stuff like that (and the occasional game) audio quality is rather important

The only of your questions I can answer is related to the HD space. You can make the drive internal with one caveat. Plex will not use the addition drive space to store metadata, even if the drive is formatted as internal. Just something to keep in mind depending on your library size and if you want previews and other meta info populated into your Plex library.
I still went went the 16gb model BC its has faster r/w speed with the flash memory, as opposed to the larger but slower HDD in the pro model, and there are reports of the large spin drives failing.
Having fancy previews and title info from Plex isn't a big deal for me, I'll just disable it if my library gets too large.
Plex will still be able to use your ssd for storage of media files and as temp space for converting files for streaming on other devices.

Well, bestbuy is being stupid af again... My dad went to the BestBuy in SF on Geary BLVD and they told him that the shield tv wasn't even announced yet (that's what the bestbuy site says as well) but you can already order it off of their site. wth?

Theres a new shield that hasnt been anounced that we only know about due to FCC filings, so maybe he thinks youre talking about that one? maybe the dont carry the original anymore?
