MT4G--->Evo - EVO 4G General

Hi, All. I have a MyTouch 4G with TMobile, but I just moved to AIT(army) and TMO get no service, so goodbye MT4G and I am going to get an EVO this weekend. I was just checking out the threads here in the EVO forums. WOW! They are very thorough and complete. I can't wait to get my EVO, and start playing around using the guides you all have posted. Any recomendations on places to start?

Welcome, hope you enjoy your evo! This link should include everything you need to know as far as rooting, fixes, backing up, and the basics. Once you get started you'll find more advanced guides on creating roms, custom themes, and other helpful threads that will make your experience awesome. Thank you for your service!

Don't make a mistake - wait for the 3D or get the Nexus S if you can't.

Jumping into the mix at this close of a update to hardware on the trusty EVO? This could help, very easy...be patient.

I do agree unless he's getting a crazy deal on the regular evo. Evo 3D but no nexus s.

I would suggest getting the Evo now, and snagging the Evo 3D when it comes this month. Sprint fortunately has the 30–day trade in deal, so I would definitely go to to 3D if I were you as soon as possible.
I would suggest using unrEVOked to root your phone, simple and flawless for the two Evos I had rooted 10 times each. After all that, I would use Amon RA for recovery. No issues, and doesn't have the scripting issues that Clockwork has. ROMs... Go on and enjoy

Just a heads up you pay $30 to swap out your phone.
If that's not too expensive, then go for it!

Thing is guys, I am the middle of no where Alabama...There is no WiFi etc to link up with, usually I just use my phone as a hotspot, but since its TMO, and TMO gets ONLY edge...I can't. This is actually why I am switching to Sprint, because as of right now I am paying 80$ for TMO and 80$ for a Verizon Hotspot(that is only 10GB's of data..not enough!) which is 160.... I figure if I just change to sprint, I will be able to get unlimited everything plus add tethering and will be paying only 100 a month....plus military discount. As far as waiting for the EVO 3D...I don't have time, there is NOTHING to do here...all I have is my internet hahah...so what I will probably do is take advantage of that 30 day return policy to purchase the 3d...or not purchase it at all, because it doesn't seem THAT practical(in my opinion anyways)..and it seems like it could bog the phone down and likely drain the battery very quickly...But then again...since I am paying 200 for the EVO...if the 3D isn't too much more, I might just get it to have the "new new" haha. Thanks a lot guys for the links, etc... Happy Rooting!

I would get the 3D, it is a beautiful piece of hardware. SLCD screen, more RAM, 1.2 ghz dual-core processor, I'm guessing improved camera, Sense 3.0... It really is a nice step for the Evo. I would just shut off the 3D effect though, save some battery. The 3D is supposed to have a bigger battery, and there are claims of better power usage with dual-core processors. So spring for the Evo I say, and snag the 3D when it lands in that 30-day trade-in period!
Welcome to the Evo fam!

I leave in 7 weeks for BCT in OK. I wanted the EVO3D so bad but it would just sit in a locker during the entire training .. Then AIT in GA till Jan2012. So I'll just be keeping my EVO till then. Nexus3 should probably be dropping around that time
The EVO is really awesome and you'll enjoy it 100% Lots of mods, roms, themes, kernels, etcc...and tons of help here on this forum!!

You wont have to 'add tethering' to your acct. After root, most roms have the hotspot unlocked.
I can only imagine you will LOVE your evo. (But the 30day exchange may be good idea, too).

Yea...I know that rooting unlocks it or whatever, but my friend who works for sprint said that if they notice a lot of data usage like that, they will prolly just realize that is what you are doing, and charge you for the tether anyways...I will try to get away with it I suppose.

QUICK question though...
In the MT4G forum there was a Pd115.img (or whatever the name was) that you could just flash, and it was basically the stock...and it rerooted and factory reset basically everything...it was really helpful when I was about to send a phone back on warranty. Is there a thread on here? I will search for it, but if someone just happened to know exactly where it was

Why is it I can get an evo for 90 on amazon but its 199 at sprint...? Pros /cons of amazon?

Mmm finally got my evo in the mail...boy she is sexy! And luckily the 3d comes out within the thirty day period from when I bought this beast.... loving sprint already.

Also going to have 2.2. I actually think this will help out the devs for our phone. Maybe a solution to ffc mod camera banding and a stable 2.2 release.

LOL I bet as soon as it is out within 2 weeks there will be a work around hack to their 4g and maybe not 21 mg download (that is under perfect conditions) but I bet we can get 50-75% of that ...........

other than for tethering I really don't see the need for more than 4-5 mbps speed... sure is good to say you have it but on a phone? I'm currently very happy with the speed of my vibrant, Pandora works well, music downloads are fast, pocket cloud works well on 3g, voip calling... I wonder if 4g is more of an energy hog than 3g... that would be awful, last time I checked we were still using li-ion batteries...
1g internal memory
im jealous of the 4g internet speed and slightly about the fcc. but it has 1gig memory on board.. thats stupid lame. might find a way to get one .
I agree with MTC44 that having this new phone out can only help the devs get us better 2.2 and a better FFC mod. I am content reaping the benefits of this new phone without having to shell out the extra cash. I am also fine with the small speed boost that I already have from the HSPA+ network without having to buy a whole new 4g phone. There's always going to be something new and bleeding edge out there. Why get upset because it's an upgraded Vibrant? If it hadn't been that, it would have been something else. At least we can use some of the advancements from this phone.
That being said, if Samsung & TMo don't get us original Vibrant owners a stock 2.2 release before Vibrant 4g is released, that would show that they have abandoned us and that they have a very high disregard for current customers. I would be disappointed at the lack of official support, but as long as we have our devs, we're golden.
Also, if Samsung & TMo do fail us on Froyo, I imagine they're going to fail Vibrant 4g owners later on as well. The ranks of the disappointed will only grow with the addition of a new phone if Samsung continues to stay on the back end of progress.
this BS.

I'm pretty sure they can be a class action lawsuit. Not only were the phones sold with GPS that does not work.. but the phone has been advertised as 2.2 a bunch of times, I'm sure the ads can be found. There is also the lag issue with it being stock.
One way at looking at it is they made the proper fixes to this phone instead of making a recall/fixes to the original Vibrant, like a true fix with the GPS... not a crappy software they stole form us... upgrading the OS... and fixing the lag issue (altho that is a "non" issue according to tmobile).
I have been in class action lawsuits over less.....
And if that wont work... ill wait for the new one to come out.. buy it and sell my modded one in the box to someone on craigslist! (jokes)
Ugh. Definitely never getting another Samsung phone again. I was skeptical about the slow updates when I heard about the Behold 2 debacle, since the Galaxy S series was going on all major US carriers, as well as sell internationally. I thought, "There's no way they would deny ALL of us good timing on updates, customer support, etc."
I was wrong.
Screw you Samsung.
I don't care how great your screen is. I don't care how great your processor is. I don't care how many more you sell. You are not getting anything else from me.
/endrant.
Sorry, guys. Had to rant somewhere. Pisses me off that they just now decide to sell what we were supposed to get in the first place. 4g, FFC, 2.2.

AT&T Switch is coming to my area...

...And I've received (via mail) my shiny new Aria. My network is supposed to transition in about a month. What can't I get away with doing on this phone? Will they need to do something to it before I start using it? I'm looking to eventually root and oc the phone, but if I have to wait I can live.
you shouldn't root it they might have to change the baseband. i suggest you wait till the switch then go ahead and root it.
What exactly is AT&T Switch? What type of transition do you mean? Sorry for the ignorant questions, but I just don't have a clue

So I was reading the literature sent with the phones (My wife misplaced it), and it gives instructions that the "transition" may take more than one day, and I may have to carry both phones for a day or 2. This really makes me think I can get to work on it now...
Anyone?

[Q] questions from a Droid user maybe coming to sprint

I currently have the Original Droid, which has been a great phone in terms of what you have been able to do to it and it's reliability. My question is; how do the owners of the Epic feel about their phone? Still happy with it? Like the roms that have come out for it? And since I haven't paid much attention to Sprint, up until now, any other phones down the line I should think about? My contract with Verizon is up in 3 months.
Yes if you like a hardware keyboard then get the Epic it's a great phone you won't be dissapointed
If you like running the latest and Greatest software then the Nexus S will be out for sprint in like a month.
If you want a powerhouse of a phone then the Evo3D should be out by June following what they did with the original Evo

Thanks for the link!
I never buy phones on contract, and swapped from an iPhone to a Moto Droid in May of last year. Loved the Android platform, since I'm a programmer and super-user -- not a dumb user, the way the iPhone continued to fail.
I switched to the Epic 4G around October of that year (bought off-contract as well, ESN was clear, but ended up still being attached to an account... got scammed and ported it to Cricket myself). Love the keyboard. Love the screen. Not a bad phone at all. I wouldn't buy it on contract, though, since the new phones are coming out. But in my mind, the Epic is a definite upgrade from the Droid, albeit still not quite as flexible as the original Droid was in terms of development and ROMs (was on Sapphire with Droid -- tried pretty much all the different ROMs for Epic and they're nice, but not as nice as something mostly AOSP, i.e. CM7 or Sapphire). Waiting patiently for Epic's CM7 to be mostly stable so I can try to ROM with that -- having very high hopes for it.
So in a nutshell, yes, great phone. But, the only issue is that the phone will be outdated rather quick, though I don't think we're going to see another contender with a decent keyboard for a while with dual-core processors, etc (re: I'm guessing a year). No comment on Sprint service, but double check with reviews in your area to see how coverage, etc, is before making the jump.

I would stay away from this phone if I were you. The roms I've tried are all pretty good, but never perfect for me. I can tell you the current stock rom is still sub par. I would get the HTC if I you. I know people on here will tell you it's not a good of a phone, but I can tell you it works a hell of a lot better. If you really want this phone I will trade you mine + I'll give you $100 if you get the evo and trade me. I'm trying to sell mine now! my phones of on really good shape, no damage to it at all. DON'T LISTEN TO THIS GUY. His intelligence is showing with trying to trade you for a lesser quality phone. The evo shift does not have an amoled screen or the gpu power the epic has. This phone is amazing and will be amazing for atleast 2 years. This phone will hold up to the dual cores of this year hands down. I've been with sprint for 9 years and they keep getting better. Development could be stronger but we have gotten EVERYTHING WE NEEDED FROM OUR DEVS HERE. CM7 is in progress and there is a stable alpha.

YOU have issues, the vast majority of people are capable of flashing a ROM correctly and troubleshooting any problems they might have, don't dissuade someone from purchasing a phone they want because YOU have problems using it correctly.
I really do like my phone and the ROMs are smoke'n.
They have been having a bit of an issue releasing Froyo that doesn't have some level of suckage.
We're expecting a 3rd try this week.
What balances that are the AWESOME devs for it; they popout an updated ROM with the latest update in no time at all.
Everyone is spot on in regards to hardware keyboard, I find myself (I HAD to have a real keyboard) actually using the swype keyboard way more than the physical one. Go figure.
Some GPS issues; though each update makes it a bit better.
There is a reason that this phone is the #1 selling PDA phone.
Having all said that, in a few months there will be some really powerful stuff that will just blow the doors off anything currently available. If I were in your position. I'd go for a multi-processor phone.
Good luck
I say get an evo.
Theres a whole lot more going on with the evo development that its a much more flexible phone.
Our phone has a lot of potential, but with a fracyion of evo/droid devs its harder for the epic to get there.

Check out the hardware keyboard fix from mkasick - it's implemented in SRF 1.1.0 and its accompanying kernel, Twilight Zone 1.1.0. If you don't want to leave your current ROM, give Twilight Zone a try. The fix is an adjustable one - so you can set the value as low as you want. That should completely eliminate any issues you're having.

These forums speak for them selves. You don't see half the problems in the HTC forums. Also if you have BOTH phones you would know how many more problems there are on this phone. I would wait for the nexus s if you want a sammy. I would not choose this phone again if I had it to do over.

I do have both, and have had few issued with either, I made the choice to stick with the Epic as my daily driver because its a much nice phone hardware wise and significantly lighter. I find it difficult to believe you would have any of the issues you're having if you properly flashed it.

I can't even tell you how many times I've flashed this phone trying to get an optimal set up. I have found that over all I've had less problems with the stock rom, but it is still a lot more buggy than the evo. I would just give this phone to my girlfriend and take her evo, but I don't think she would know what to do if the phone went haywire on her. Hers is stock and I've had far less issues with it than this phone. The only times I had any real issues with her evo is when I tried to mess with it. Trust me man, I thought I was the one screwing up this phone, that's why I'm trying out the stock hardware! All I'm saying there are a lot more issues. Trust me I bought this phone for the same reasons as everyone else! I'm just getting sick and tired of having to Odin the damn thing everyone 3 to 4 weeks! I thought a program may have been causing it, so now I'm trying stock ROM EC and I've only rooted it. I've downloaded XDA, Poynt, Blow up, and the Chase apps. These are the only apps I have on here now, so I was hoping that it was maybe an app causing my problems. Today I had my first problem since going to my current set up. I've been talking about it in this forum, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12464672#post12464672. I'm hoping that it's something that I just needed to reboot my phone. The only other thing I can think that made my phone go black screen is when I use the media player and play videos. I'm hoping it's not one of the apps, but I haven't been able to replicate the problem today. I'm just saying that my girl doesn't have any of these issues with the evo and right now I'm basically on the edge with this phone!!!! I also don't want to shell out a bunch more money for a phone so I just kind of have to deal with it and hope I can find a solution, but I would not recommend this phone to anyone after what I've been through! The Nexus S may be a different story since it's stock, but not this phone!

I'm not gonna say that flashing isn't a complicated thing. But that's your choice and if you really want to experience amazing ui then it takes time of the individual to figure how and what they can and can not do. That's why there is 1 click root. Flashing is not meant for everyone so if you don't have the time that's cool but don't blame the phone for your short comings either in time or intelligence or pesistence.

Trust me I've flashed this phone many times. I'm sorry to tell you that when you flash Roms and kernels there are still going to be some problems. I realise that you may want to flash Roms and kernels to make the phone run a certain way, otherwise there wouldn't be multiple roms or kernels to flash if everything worked perfect with one. You're showing your ignorance if you think that a flashed rom and/or kernel is going to be problem free. There's a reason why there are constant updates to the roms and kernels.
I'm just tired of doing it and you should be able to use the phone, without it crashing, without having to mess with it. I don't think it's too much to ask for the phone to not crash when it's stock. Maybe I need to go to full stock with out root. Maybe that's what's causing the phone to mess up. That's my next option!
Edit: I wish I could see other things you've bought. Just curious what type of repairs you had to do to them...
Not sure why you would expect something to NOT work correctly out of the box? You make a valid point it shouldn't work correctly stock..........

Whatever you do, do NOT get the Epic. Even if it's free. The keyboard TO THIS DAY does not work properly. It still misses keys and it's not layed out all that well either. I came from a g1 that had a keyboard that ACTUALLY registered keys, even if you type faster than my grandma. Please do not get the epic, get the evo shift or wait for something else on Verizon.

flashing evo to verizo

let me start off by saying sorry if i am posting this in the wrong section. I am just calling of for help from my xda friends.
By saying that, i am looking into buying another Evo 4g for my GF witch has a ****ty blackberry for verizon i was wondering if anyone has found out how to flash it over to verizon. now i have done some research and have seemed to get no where. many people said its illegal to copy the esn. that maybe yu can mirror another verizon phones prl. im just stumped on the whole situation. quite frankly idc what kind on htc or android phone it is i would just like to be able to flash to verizon to make her happy. i would really appreciate it if someone would help me out with this.
Why use a evo on verizon? ThunderBolt would be much better and should be able to get for the same price.
Yeah, my boyfriend wanted a phone "like mine" but refused to switch to Sprint. He travels a lot and needs decent speeds. He got the Thunderbolt & it's similar to the Evo. Comes stock with Sense 2.1, but it's still on FroYo. There are Gingerbread roms for it if that's what you're looking for.
It's a newer phone than the Evo but has about the same specs as the Evo. His phone stock matches mine rooted performance-wise, but his battery life is worse than mine.
I think getting a Thunderbolt would be a lot easier than trying to use an Evo on Verizon.

Verizon will NOT activate a non-Verizon device on their network. Period. If you choose to clone esn and such illegal measures, you do it at your own risk. Why go through all this trouble and risk being prosecuted for breaking the law when you can just buy a Verizon phone instead? Doesn't make much sense.
Honestly don't like the thunderbolt and the illegal stuff there are ways around our ii kno it. Was just looking to see if anyone knew them.

Will you still be using this phone a year from now?

I don't see anything in the pipeline that I'd change phones for. Do you?
GNote, GNex, or GS3. Whichever has the best development and specs when my upgrade comes 1st of July. I've had this phone since 9/25/10 and I love it and will never get rid of it but I will be upgrading.

Same here. I used the Diamond from March 2009 to October 2011, when it became too damaged to repair. Before the Epic, I was a real skeptic of hardware keyboards, but I'm a changed person now. That amazing keyboard cannot be topped by any touchscreen (even swype) in speed. I've tried several other devices with hardware keyboards hands on, but the Epic still has got to be one of the best I've ever used. I mean, Android can be navigated rather quickly with the keyboard and it's great for emulators too.
Since I'm just a student, I can't really afford brand new expensive phones or plans, so I usually buy the previous generation device used for $50, which is what I did in the case of both the Diamond and the Epic. Right now, I'm using it on the Sprint SERO $30 a month plan with unlimited data, messaging, and roaming, and I can't think of a better cellular combination. Kudos to Sprint for always getting the good version (or only version, such as the case of the Kyocera Echo) of most phones.
The Epic definetly has a lot of life left in it.

Same here. Will have to ditch it for the gs3 when the time comes.
Send from my SPH-D700 (Samsung Epic 4G)
Probably not, but I mean hey, maybe I will if I don't catch on with solely touchscreen phones, they needa make a upgrade though. They have customers waiting to move to the next new gen keyboard phone off their htc Evo slide or Epic4g, maybe even the Transform or Moment lmao.

Probably Not, Love My Epic, but skipped Touch! Started out with Moment! Be first time with an android phone at a fresh start when it comes out and forum with the S3, so that's where I am headed!!!!!!!!
Ill probably wait for a slider phone with LTE. Might even hold out specificlly for samsung. The software support sucks, but they always seem to be a little easier to root and theme. The only crap they really pulled was the sneaky little file that re rewrites you boot partition with every boot to remove root. I'm even willing to bet that was sprints idea as the first thing every root user usually does is set up for free tethering.

still waiting and hoping to see the next gen hw keyboard phone.. more than likely i'll wait till LTE hits my area then see what's available..
I've given up waiting on the Great Pumpkin Keyboard phone. It's time to move on.

It's not so much the Epic I'm leaving behind as it is Sprint. There have been trials with the Epic- horrible GPS, slow software updates, and a modem that likes to randomly reset. However Sprints data speeds are regularly into the 10's of kbps now. Tragic. Might as well have a dumb phone if I stay with them.
I will most likely have the epic till my contract is up in march 2013...

I can get a new phone in 8/2012. The problem is that I REALLY REALLY REALLY want a powerful keyboard phone (like the Epic was), and I don't see hints of one on the horizon.
LTE is tentatively supposed to be in the Tampa area in the summer of this year, so the timing would be perfect, but I fear that I may be SOL.
Unless it breaks on me I will most likely still be using it. The only other phone I might be interested in is the Sony Ericsson phone.
well
With the ROMs and kernels as advanced as it is nowadays coming out at a rate like this, if this keeps up I'm definitely keeping this phone for sure. Gotta see what Sammy does in a year though with the new Exynos chip and all...
There is no reason for me to switch phones right now. I have plenty of memory and I can run almost all games and apps effortlessly

I had my og Instinct about 2 years and 2 months before I got the og epic
The upgrade was painful because I actually liked the phone.
But my upgrade from the og epic to the epic touch was mostly painless. It wasn't because I didn't like the epic (I really did very much) it was because the software between the gs1 and gs2 were very similar and that I almost never used the hard keyboard.
Since I like touchwiz the upgrade to the gs3 should be just as painless
