Ok THIS is cool (if it works)

The code from it is what Regaw used in his thread on how to root 2.1. I just downloaded and it is an apk. I'm still rooted from 1.5 but it appears you can download from your phone and run the app and then you have root.

i dont know if it works for hero users, but ive read quite a few success stories over at the evo forums.
I had a sneaking suspicion that the key to rooting the Hero was going to be tied to the Evo. The Evo gets rooted soon after Google I/O and they held the code back to get it done until evo release day, which makes sense. I'm quite happy with how things are looking. When I eventually scrape the pennies together to get the Evo I'll be able to root it easily.
That's going to be a lot of pennies. I told one of the guys from work I was getting the Evo and he was like "son of a b!tch" I can't afford one right now, but the look on his face was funny.

I can get one at new subscriber rates in 11 months. I'm hoping that in 6 months the Evo is old and busted and there will people dumping it for brand new hotness. What I'd really like is an Evo specced phone without 4G or it's upcharge.

Plus 1 on that! I'm not unhappy with my Hero though. I AM sort of regretting getting the Hero, because now I want the cool new phones! Actually, I'll blame it on the Instinct and being on the everything family plan, which give me premier account status, where I get the full upgrade every year...

Maybe Regaw will chime in on this and tell us what's going on with it, and if someone just took his work and turned it into an app.
Confirmed
I confirm this 1 click root does work on the Hero. Love this method. Great work from the developers.

did it root with 2.1, or with 2.1+the ota update that was recently released?
instructions
I went to the web address....there are no instructions on how to use it. Do you download to your phone or to your computer?

I too did this, but now my Hero won't update the weather and I can't access the market...something about a data connection error.
Anyone else experiencing this?
oops, make that "a network error has occurred"
unrEVOked is a one-click-root tool by mmastrac who also got a lot of help from the likes of toastcfh, maejrep, and some other guys.
The exploit behind the tool is the exact same one used in Regawmod's root for 2.1, just the boot.img was patched to play nicely with our phones.
Then again, I don't see why this is in the development section.
so.. lol im not to new to this but is this flashing a recovery? or just gaining root and adding su ect ect.
well i will find out in a min either way lol
edit:
worked perfectly, no problems here.
Is there any chance this has messed with my Hero? I can't get online and weather won't display or connect. I have done multiple soft resets. Is there something I am forgetting to do? I downloaded and ran the unrevoked apk.
try loading a custom rom.
or call customer service, Sprint shut off my data for now reason last week and couldnt tell me how it happend.
does the phone make calls? sms? mms?
Well, I did another soft reset, but this time pulled the battery and waited several minutes. The network access came back, weather started working again, etc. So then I downloaded/installed wireless tether and started to play with that but then the network access went down again. I can't figure out if its Sprint getting screwy or this phone
Just got off the phone with verizon they stated that they will be sending out the ota for the droid x and droid tomorrow and not the incredible. When I asked when it would come out they said latter this summer. Strait from tech support.

The EVO got their's because Sprint didn't want their top phone to be overshadowed by the Droid X and Droid 2. Luckily for us, our phone is very similar to the EVO so we can be sure our phone is not far behind.
Only the Droid is getting the OTA as of now. Not the Droid X
From what I've gathered though, the OTA is going to bork root. Honestly my 8/01 is working perfectly, except for twitter widget, which force closes, which is ok, because i hate twitter.
Even if it did come tomorrow i don't think I'd install for a few weeks.
Note to Verizon: it IS the end of the summer, JERKS!

funny thing is that the rep didn't make a false statement. if it doesn't come tomorrow, it will inevitably have to come later this summer. it can't come sooner this summer. or right now this summer.
But! this thread has got me thinking on some threads that I think I'll start ...
1. "i just got off the phone with verizon tech support and he spent 10 minutes trying to find a "touchscreen sensitivity calibration" menu because "it would help with my proximity sensor malfunction".
2. "i just got off the phone with verizon tech support and they told me that I had to replace my Dinc with a refurbed Droid because refurb dincs wouldn't be in stock for a month"
3. "i just got off the phone with verizon tech support for the 2nd time today and Surprise! refurb dincs are in stock and my replacement is on the way."
4. "i just got off the phone with verizon tech support and he thought froyo was frozen yogurt."
bottom line: don't listen to tech support. just tell them what to do.

What? Summer's not over until football is in full swing. More scientifically, when we reach Autumnal Equinox. September 23rd to be exact.
First regular season pats game sept. 12th!!!! THAT is the end of summer!!!!
Looks like Motorola might know a litle bit more then your Verizon rep does.

Bear in mind that VZW tech support knows just about as much as anyone on the forum... perhaps even less. They are not privy to the information, so they pass along whetever rumor they've heard. Those that are "in the know" don't deal with customers.

it's also not over until I don't have to worry about heat stroke on the golf course. or until i no longer have to mow the grass every 4 freakin days! seriously, i mowed on tuesday ... 2 storms and 3 days later it's halfway up my calf. very disheartening.
FYI: I read that the Droid got root after the 2.2 OTA via that new market app.
Also, I know the Incredible is already the better device but/so why update the Droid first? Makes no Sense to me. First the shipping delays, now they want us to wait while the old ass Droid gets updated. I guess VZW figures they already have gotten the Incredible users to sign new contracts, so they aren't going anywhere.
Also I sent a tweet to HTC asking 'when are we getting updated because I'm tired of running these buggy leaked ROMs.'
They tweeted:
"A small reminder that when SW updates are ready, HTC or your carrier will notify you. Unofficial software can create future issues."

I would suggest getting the Evo now, and snagging the Evo 3D when it comes this month. Sprint fortunately has the 30–day trade in deal, so I would definitely go to to 3D if I were you as soon as possible.
I would suggest using unrEVOked to root your phone, simple and flawless for the two Evos I had rooted 10 times each. After all that, I would use Amon RA for recovery. No issues, and doesn't have the scripting issues that Clockwork has. ROMs... Go on and enjoy

Thing is guys, I am the middle of no where Alabama...There is no WiFi etc to link up with, usually I just use my phone as a hotspot, but since its TMO, and TMO gets ONLY edge...I can't. This is actually why I am switching to Sprint, because as of right now I am paying 80$ for TMO and 80$ for a Verizon Hotspot(that is only 10GB's of data..not enough!) which is 160.... I figure if I just change to sprint, I will be able to get unlimited everything plus add tethering and will be paying only 100 a month....plus military discount. As far as waiting for the EVO 3D...I don't have time, there is NOTHING to do here...all I have is my internet hahah...so what I will probably do is take advantage of that 30 day return policy to purchase the 3d...or not purchase it at all, because it doesn't seem THAT practical(in my opinion anyways)..and it seems like it could bog the phone down and likely drain the battery very quickly...But then again...since I am paying 200 for the EVO...if the 3D isn't too much more, I might just get it to have the "new new" haha. Thanks a lot guys for the links, etc... Happy Rooting!

I would get the 3D, it is a beautiful piece of hardware. SLCD screen, more RAM, 1.2 ghz dual-core processor, I'm guessing improved camera, Sense 3.0... It really is a nice step for the Evo. I would just shut off the 3D effect though, save some battery. The 3D is supposed to have a bigger battery, and there are claims of better power usage with dual-core processors. So spring for the Evo I say, and snag the 3D when it lands in that 30-day trade-in period!
Welcome to the Evo fam!
I leave in 7 weeks for BCT in OK. I wanted the EVO3D so bad but it would just sit in a locker during the entire training .. Then AIT in GA till Jan2012. So I'll just be keeping my EVO till then. Nexus3 should probably be dropping around that time
The EVO is really awesome and you'll enjoy it 100% Lots of mods, roms, themes, kernels, etcc...and tons of help here on this forum!!
You wont have to 'add tethering' to your acct. After root, most roms have the hotspot unlocked.
I can only imagine you will LOVE your evo. (But the 30day exchange may be good idea, too).

Yea...I know that rooting unlocks it or whatever, but my friend who works for sprint said that if they notice a lot of data usage like that, they will prolly just realize that is what you are doing, and charge you for the tether anyways...I will try to get away with it I suppose.
QUICK question though...
In the MT4G forum there was a Pd115.img (or whatever the name was) that you could just flash, and it was basically the stock...and it rerooted and factory reset basically everything...it was really helpful when I was about to send a phone back on warranty. Is there a thread on here? I will search for it, but if someone just happened to know exactly where it was
Why is it I can get an evo for 90 on amazon but its 199 at sprint...? Pros /cons of amazon?

But this whole downgrade to being considered a "Low Activity Device" is kinda messing with me a little...
I kinda really don't like it, lol...
If there is anyone else with me, let's all email the Super Mods, and see if we can bring it back
Please,
Taylore
The sad thing is that there has been more activity in here the past month than there was before, and it then gets the downgrade
As much as I hate to agree with this, we are a low activity device. Other than the general chatter about upgrading to froyo, we have a couple of ROMs and kernels that haven't been updated in quite some time, a gingerbread theme and some Ticker tweaks. Compared to other devices that is low activity.
We would need to kick up the development to really justify getting it moved.

That's IF we get Froyo. It's been a couple months now, and we still haven't heard legitimate evidence that they are releasing froyo for us.
I have no idea why Verizon hasn't pushed that update out. It's incredible that they could just let the Continuum people hang like that. I'm going to talk to my media relations contact (I'm a product journalist by trade) and see what they say off the record. I'm sure it will go something like this "No comment at this time".

"Legacy & Low Activity Devices", Wow.
That's low. But I guess it's the sign of the times.
I purchased my Continuum in January and I'm so fed up with samsung. RSS feeds don't work at all. Very dissappointed. I've decided not to purchase a single samsung phone/tablet product in the future. Lots of other makers that I see updates happening. 2 of my kids have Fascinates and they love them but updates are really slow coming out.
If it wasn't for you guys working on it and making it better, I would have canned the phone. Thanks for all your efforts and I hope we'll get 2.2 soon.

I've noticed this unlimited data plan loophole mentioned a few times. Does this mean that those of us who are grandfathered in with the old data plans have a way of getting out of our contracts due to this change? I activated my Continuum in March.
But now that we are seeing some Froyo action, I'm not as desperate to go in a different direction. The thought of speeding her up and de-bloating is pretty exciting. Also I love the ticker even though it's only like 10% useable for what I do. The ability to answer or ignore calls and see the time no matter what I'm doing is great. Yes I know any non-continuum phone could do the same with a pop-up window or whatever but that permanent little section of soft-controls is just so cool! Thought the real reason I like it is the unlimited possibilities for customization...which so far has been non-existent. Every day I look at that ticker and muse over it's possibilities...thinking how nice it would be if the little notifiers mapped to apps I actually use or how awesome it would be to pop some 1x1 widgets down there.... Is it irrational in Aug 2011 to still hope for things everyone dreamed of when this thing was released last November?
I held on to Palm for way too long too....Is being loyal to a gadget for what it should be a fools errand that will just leave me sad and bitter in the end?

there is no loophole...verizon grandfathered in all smartphone users who had unlimited data (3g or 4g) for the near future (they can always change **** down the road if they want)
but for the time being u can upgrade on contract or activate new devices from 3g to 4g or 4g to 3g and keep ur same plan no restrictions (although 4g to 3g would burn ur 4g sim after 24 hours and ud need to get a new one)
Shouldnt all this activity and the Froyo Update bump us back up out of the low activity section? Just saying....

This should probably be in the Q&A, but I am looking for a quick-ish responce because I need to make a decision by tomorrow afternoon.
Ok, so heres the short form of the story. Went away for the weekend with friends had some drinks and took a cab home. Got a text in the cab, and put it down between my legs and forgot about it as I was getting out. Called the cab company and they claim no ones seen it.
Have the "lost phone" app from the market on it and all kinds of locks and passwords but none of it helps when someone turns it off as soon as they get it.
So the phone is long gone never to be seen again. Moving on...
Now I am looking at getting another one because I loved it so much . But after having an Atrix and knowing that theres the Bell firmware and the At&t firmware and seeing some rather complicated things that need to be done with the Bell phones I am wondering would it be better to buy an At&t phone or a Bell phone?
If you are not going to mod, then get whichever phone fits your carrier. If you are going to mod, then there's not that much of a difference anyway with the work that needs to be done with either device...
