Bell Atrix vs. At&t Atrix - Atrix 4G General

This should probably be in the Q&A, but I am looking for a quick-ish responce because I need to make a decision by tomorrow afternoon.
Ok, so heres the short form of the story. Went away for the weekend with friends had some drinks and took a cab home. Got a text in the cab, and put it down between my legs and forgot about it as I was getting out. Called the cab company and they claim no ones seen it.
Have the "lost phone" app from the market on it and all kinds of locks and passwords but none of it helps when someone turns it off as soon as they get it.
So the phone is long gone never to be seen again. Moving on...
Now I am looking at getting another one because I loved it so much . But after having an Atrix and knowing that theres the Bell firmware and the At&t firmware and seeing some rather complicated things that need to be done with the Bell phones I am wondering would it be better to buy an At&t phone or a Bell phone?

If you are not going to mod, then get whichever phone fits your carrier. If you are going to mod, then there's not that much of a difference anyway with the work that needs to be done with either device...

They both work on Rogers. And I plan on doing a few mods, I was just thinking that there seemed to be a few things that say "at&t only". Or am I imagining that?

Adventures in trying to get Phone calls

So, after having the tab for a day and a half, was getting twitchy on making phone calls.
I want that Phone icon on the screen!
So, after rooting (uber easy actually, z4root works a treat), got adbWireless to enable me to connect and got a shell.
Bit of juggling, mounting the /system and pushing in the Phone.apk's.
I've tried a whole bunch of Phone.apk's from anywhere I can find them basically, and still no joy as of yet.
In fact, getting a few errors now in a few places (PhoneInfo and TabletInformation errors).
Makes sense it's not trivial as we'd have seen something already probably.
And don't know if it's the phone.apk or the radio being used that's set to block.
How's everyone else getting on?
Thanks a lot for posting... I am anxious to see if we can do this... a friend of mine thought this would be a simple "install the phone apk" but we found that didn't work on Wednesday.
The only other one I've seen who's trying (publicly maybe?) is jdmadonna who posted his results over in the Tab Themes and Apps forum today that he rooted with z4root, then installed the phone.apk as you did, then the Tab started vibrating every few seconds and showed the message android phone has stopped working. When he rebooted, everything locked up apparently... he said he lost the network provider and baseband and could not bring them back, so he returned the tab. He had been looking for the Euro phone.apk, so I'm not sure if that's what he used here...
Guess it will not be as easy as we had hoped.... hopefully this nut can be cracked somehow.
Adding insult to injury is the Samsung T-Mobile user manual for the Tab which refers to it as a phone throughout! However, the pretty much useless pamphlet that T-Mo provides call it a "device."
Wish someone from Samsung would anonymously step in and help us out. The t-mo salesman I worked with (who was very helpful wrt to possibly using it as a phone) said he'd heard that some folks were/are? threatening a class-action lawsuit against the carriers... obviously a money maker for the lawyers... but I don't care... if it'd make them let us use it as a phone, that'd be fine with me.
Couldn't the carrier block phone access for the device by the IMEI number? Then it wouldn't matter what the user did, the tablet would never be able to make a call.
Here's what guyverunit had to say in this thread at post no. 52:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832643&page=6
Someone else reported this too... when you press activate on the Verizon phones at the start, they MAKE CALLS OUT.... this is what he said:
"so knowing that Verizon was selling there version at Best Buy i popped in there today to check it out, see if there plans or anything were better. they had just taken it out of the box and were setting it up. i went to work and on my lunch went back. they had the display set up so i played with it. it was still at the activation screen, i pressed activate and behold it dialed out to do the activation. even had a phone icon in the top bar.
so i talked to the best buy mobile manager there and ask if they had gotten it passed the activation he said no but he would try again. he tried and it dialed out. i said oh so it can make calls, he said yes its just not put into the software to do it for the user end but yes, it can make calls. he also said he gives it two weeks till the DEV community hack it to do just that. LOL"
The t-mo phones do not make phone calls to activate... at least mine didn't... the sales guy activated it by using the bar code and the computer and no "activate screen" came up at all... went straight to browser.
Don't know if that means the phones themselves are different... or if Verizon just kept the Euro phone activation approach...
Maybe the Verizon phones would be the best ones to work with?

One of the Phone.apk' did that for me too. The Phone.apk I'm using now has stopped showing me the connection in the top bar, so looks like that's related to that as well, but at least it's not crashing like it was.
I should really reflash back to base (is that possible atm?) and see what's doable.
I'm still holding on for a euro rom that's flashable to enable everything.
Do you think the Euro rom will work with US hardware, or should they be identical?
I was curious about Paten's question re the IMEI no. possibly being blocked and did a little searching...
I found a freelance programmer's site... codepainters blog....
http://codepainters.wordpress.com/2009/12/11/android-imei-number-and-the-emulator/
and in the course of saying how to change the IMEI number, he says this at the beginning:
"Anyway, code analysis shows that IMEI/IMSI request goes down through all the telephony layers (see the diagram), eventually getting to the baseband device."
I find this interesting because jdmadonna and you describe the phone.apk causing problems down to the baseband level... as did you...
Obviously, IANAAD (I am not an Android developer - my programming days are way in the past)... so maybe there are myriad other things that can cause a problem down to the baseband level...
Maybe it's just as simple as unblocking the ISEI no. as Paten suggests...
I'm also hopeful about the Euro flash, but am not brave enough (nor do I know how) to do it!
You guys are using a different SIM from the one you received with your Tab right? (if you got it on a plan). One that you know voice calling works on?
In Australia, the Tab does not have voice disabled, but they force you (for the initial launch) to sign up for a data only plan. The SIM you get on this plan is blocked for voice, but works for 3G and even sending SMSs.
You just might want to make sure that the SIM you have in actually works for voice in case you DO get it working from a software perspective, but it is just the SIM that is stopping the call.
Aye, swapped the sim over from my other phone (though the PAYG sim I got actually did support voice/data apparently, but I didn't want to risk it so took a known working sim)
Phone.apk
Radio stuff
imei
Don't know. Could be any of them, or combo of 2 or more even.
It's really crazy. I appreciate they probably want to keep it simple as a tablet device, but they're missing out on revenue. "Want to use voice? that's available for another 10 bucks and/or a different(more expensive) sim"
Keeps it working for people who just want a tab, and gets more cash from people who want to dump their phone.
Think it's telling that ALL the telco's are limiting the voice as if anyone of them broke ranks and offered voice, they'd all have to.
Guess we'll see which Telco chickens out first!
/sigh
Re the SIM card... the holder mine came in does say data only, but the tmo rep said it could still handle voice.. seemed odd to me... since jyveafk has tried switching it, guess I'll wait to see if a solution turns up... or the tab is going back and I'm not getting a new phone when my contract's out in protest!

If you had followed your own advice (search and engage brain ), you would realize that they are talking about US Tabs, as the phone function has been disabled on these.
Euro Tabs have phone functionality as standard and the Yanks already know this so your post came over as a little sarcastic!

I've been using the Galaxy phone .apk's, not another Tab's Phone that's known to work. Perhaps this is the issue.
Can you pull it and post it please?

*cue dramatic chord* wow actually.
considering what sprints up to with their base stations, customer service improvements, and the fact that even when i worked for em 3-4 years ago, they were always updating their rms/rms+/fast/snap/fdt systems, i can't say i'm too surprised.
the leg up they go for on the other companies afterall is trying to be the first to the gate with tech.
anything our system info can tell, i'm sure they can see. kernel/rom/etc. i doubt they'd act on it unless its a store visit though. or i'd hope not anyways. it'd be strange and surprising to see the company thats the easiest on the rom community(they're the only ones who kept their mouth shut about wireless tether so far, and the easiest with 3rd party apps from the beginning) to turn on them.

They knew on my wifes Intercept two weeks ago and the tech support just asked if rom I was using was better than stock. I said yes, and he said that it s the only way to get that phone to function properly. He then took care of my issue as if it was a "non-rooted" phone.
I had my external speaker go out and took it up to the Sprint store to get the speaker replaced. The tech asked me if I rooted it, but he didn't have a problem with that.
The problem I had was that replacing the speaker screwed up the phone somehow so I had to re-flash. Meaning it wouldn't boot properly. But that is another story.

OK - it makes sense that a tech/repair guy at the local Sprint store might be able to tell if you've "rooted" your phone ( by the way - didn't you all Odin back to stock ? ) ; but are you saying that Sprint HQ can tell if I'm rooted/ROMed just by me calling them from my Epic ? ....... I could care less about the Intercept...that damn thing can burn in a pit...which may actually help it function better than it currently does.
Not sure if they have a system or not, but I laughed that the dude knew the only way it works is with a custom ROM. I have Ubentdroid on it and at least the capacitive buttons work now.
If you can't tell, I would not recommend the Intercept. It sucks more than the suckiest suck that ever sucked.

Sometimes its an issue that isnt a biggie, so unroot is a waste of time. With my wifes, it was that her phone stopped being recognized on Sprint service. It ended up being an account screw up.
Well this is simple, we can just create a flashable zip to simply change the baseband to display the stock one.
(Haven't done any rom developement, so I don't know where that file lies.)

EXACTLY! why take a chance? especially if you have lost/stolen protection, you don't want to give them a reason to screw you over. good to know they can figure it out over the phone as well tho. hopefully they stay content letting people root away w/ no consequence except for a voided warranty, considering all the reasons they give customers for rooting (CIQ, DRM, ect...)

Try to get a new phone.

Last week my wife and I went to a sprint store because her moment was having problems. The person there offered her a different phone but out of the list her phone was the best. I have read about people getting different phone by complaining about the epic and with all of its problem. I do have insurence on my phone. I was wondering what people think my chance of getting a differnt phone is? I have had it replaced once. I have been really happy with the dev community here and if samsung had programmers half as good as the ones here we would see ICS on our phone by the end of the year. Also does anyone know what the other phone options are available for a replacement for the epic?

it depends on the manager at the time. when my samsung moment was going out(which has flash) non of the phones offered did. i begged, just poked my head in 3 times a week to see if they chagned the list. i know i bugged, but if i wanted no flash i would have stuck with my treo 755p.
in short it really depends who is there help you, if you complain, the squeaking wheel gets the oil first as my dad says.

it will take some time but is possible eventually. How far from stock are you currently? If it's just rooted with a different launcher they won't care most likely.

Did adobe rewrite flash player to support the Samsung moment? I'm 100% sure that the moment's chipset does not support flash that's why I got an epic. But html5 works fine on the moment which I found out about 2 months ago.
but if flash does work can you post a link to where you got flash from? I searched on sdx and they all confirmed flash doesn't work.
If I remember correctly it will work, just not ideally. The jit compiler was not optimized for Flash support on Eclair, but it would function. This is all fuzzy, someone please correct me if necessary.

Would the steps be identical to that of the fascinate except prior to that you'd have to flash a Verizon prl? I ask because even after the flash was successful, making a call still results in "we're sorry we are currently unable to authentic your phone".

I'm curious to know what 3G speeds you guys are getting. (I know it varies by location/coverage) but still.
Two Tips:
#1, make sure the Donor Phone can be read, in some way, even if its alternate methods, otherwise you're screwed.
#2, If you're flashing an Epic to any carrier that isn't Sprint, it's BEST to uninstall systemupdates.apk.

Just wanted to thank justan00b for putting this together. He is truly a helpful community member, with a lot of patience and drive to be contributing to people who need help.
For months, I have sat on my EVO 3D, because I was not able to successfully write the HA, AAA, and the DMU stuff correctly to the phone to get the true 3G speeds. Granted, all Verizon MVNOs are capped to begin with, but using the EVO on 1X was not an option for me. Thanks to justan00b's guide, I will give this a whirl on Saturday and see how it goes...
Thanks again man!

I'm not sure if Verizon phones are any different, but on other prepaid carriers, the keys are much more difficult to read than others, so say the user following your guide tries it out with a phone that locks up and won't allow you to read the keys, they have a bad investment on their hands. Without the possibility of 1x/3G internet.

Thanks for the detailed tut. The best so far for flashing to st. Gonna give this a shot once I get my vzw phone, should be here in a week. Will post an update once done. Wonder if you can get higher 3g speeds by using the full throttle tut posted here. Might give that a try when done.
It seems like with most things there are many ways to accomplish something. I just today flashed an EVO 4G over to ST. This is the second one I have done. First time I used a Handsfree Activation method because I did not have a VZ phone to activate an pull the data from. This time around I have a Fascinate and used a similar yet actually much different method then this. Im kicking myself because the first time around I searched like crazy and found the proper MMS settings and APN that got my MMS fully working, and well...did not save the info so now once again Im searching for it...lol. Now I know the HTC and Samsung MMS works differently on ST, but contrary to most peoples belief...the native MMS CAN be fixed and function 100% on the Samsungs. I have seen it personally working and am trying to get in touch with the flasher who set the phone up. If he gives up the secret I will post it here. If he doesnt then Im either going to try and track down the phone I seen working and see if the guy will allow me to take a peek into the settings and backup and pull a copy of the APN....or...lol...Im going to just send the flasher a Sprint Sammy and pay him to flash it. Then I can just pull the info from my own phone. Stay tuned to this thread...I will be posting the fix.

Atrix with burnt WI-FI/Bluetooth

Well I'm going to miss this section of the forums. A few weeks back I started having random reboots, then WI-FI error when trying to turn it on. I had been changing ROMs a lot, and I had read about the problem of the chips frying, but had to give it one more try. I successfully RSD flashed back to official ATT firmware, and for some reason it worked...for about three days.
I picked up a really good deal on an almost new HTC Vivid. Not near the devolpment going on for that phone, but enough to make it fun.
