Today, during the day I tried to unlock my phone but the screen didn't come on. I kept trying and nothing. I pop out the battery and put it back in and the phone automatically turns on (it did this every time i took out the battery and inserted it back in). I can use it just fine but i can't lock it either. Only way I can get it to lock is wait for the screen to timeout and i can only unlock it by awaking it through the charger or USB. I decided to go into recovery and the power button does not work in there as well. I'm currently running a rooted Evo with the Kinged Shooter ROM. I also have insurance. Can the power button just be busted or stuck or can this be related to software? Any suggestions as to what I can do other than taking it to a Sprint store?

Seems like its hardware, cyanogenmod has options to unlock with volume keys, also another to lock within the notification power Widgets. If you want to unroot drop the stock.img on your sdcard and apply the latest update unrooting your phone.

Go back in time and grab a version of your phone without the button issue. Don't worry about paradoxes because you'll just be creating an alternate timeline.
Don't understand the aversion to taking it to Sprint. Their repair people are nice, I promise.

Thanks for the response back. I would need to do this through recovery if I decided to unroot? If so, I can't select anything in recovery because the power button doesn't work in recovery at all either.

I'd be glad to take it to Sprint to repair. I just want to see if I can get it repaired without having to pay some deductible. I believe my 1 year warranty is still good.

No he means get the stock rom in pc36img.zip format and place it on the root of your sdcard. Then pull your batteru and hold vol down as it powers on. Then the bootloader will read the file and ask you if you want to apply the update. At that point you will use volume up to accept it will flash a stock rom back onto your phone. This is the unrooting process no recovery access is needed to perform this

It will only work if you were rooted prior to revolutionary. If you used revolutionary then you will need to find the thread where the guy modified the hboot to s-on his phone. I would link it but I'm on my phone. I will link it tomorrow if you haven't found it by then.

If you just want a workaround, I believe tap tap app might work for you. You can set the proximity sensor to turn the phone off/on.

I believe I used unrevoked one click root to root my phone so i'm thinking I can unroot it. When I unroot it, does the Splash screen go back to the white splash screen? I'm asking because I currently have a black splash screen and no matter what ROM i've ever flashed, it has not changed back to the white one.
I do have a few questions for you or for anyone else regarding repairs and replacements, if I have TEP the $8/month insurance, does that also cover repairs free of charge? I saw that their is repair insurance for $4 and loss and damage insurance for $5, I don't believe these options were available to me at time of purchase unless my $8 insurance covers both. Would I have to unroot for the repair or for a replacement if I am paying for insurance? I'm just thinking well if i'm paying for insurance and not using my warranty, rooted or unrooted should be fine, someone correct me if I am wrong. I know that undoubtedly I will have to take my phone to a Sprint store to have this issue fixed or replaced if I want to continue flashing ROMs. I'd just like to be prepared for when I do take it to Sprint.

If you have insurance, a repair that doesn't require replacement of any internal circuitry is free IIRC. At most it's like $35 bucks. From personal experience, I brought my EVO into repair centers twice; the first time they replaced my screen for free, the second they gave me a replacement battery cover and didn't even ask for my phone number.
The guys at my local repair center are pretty kick ass. Actually almost everyone at their stores except one that I've been into in San Antonio are pretty cool. The sales guy who got me to switch to Sprint in the first place offered to give me his email address so he could share tips on Android since I was a new convert at the time.
Yea you will be ok. The repair guys will take care of you and if they are cool like the ones by me I let them know I am rooted and they dont put me through the ringer. Just unroot it or if you can just take an OTA update if it allows you too and that will take care of unrooting it for you
My launch Evo power button is starting to crap out as well. It works for a stretch then doesn't respond, and its kinda recessed into the body of the phone. I'm trying to hold it together until the GSII comes, and I'm using the app No Lock as a work around. So Sprint please hurry with the release, thanks.
So i'm looking at different threads to unroot and i've been reading that i need to run the s-on tool (which I can't because I can't select it in recovery) from unrevoked and then run the RUU. Some say to just run the RUU. Which one is it? Also, I would like to unroot to a stock rom where I can still use the unrevoked one click root and not revolutionary if possible.
The manager at the local Sprint store here says they are allowed to repair rooted phones as long as it's not software related. So with it being a repair for the power button, you should be fine.
Have you gone to the store yet to see what they can do for you? You're acting like they are going to call the police on you if you bring a rooted phone in there. They are not in the clouds of what can be done with Android.
Typed on my CyanoSavaged SuperEvo.
I've been having the same issue on and off for a few months. Sometimes the power button will not work at all, other times it will, and sometimes it will only work if you press it VERY lightly, if you try to press it normally it will take it as if you were holding it down and the reboot menu pops up. When it decides it really wants to act up it drives me crazy. I'd have to set my screen to never turn off.
I was hoping I could just keep from throwing my Evo into a wall until the GSII comes to Sprint, but then I found out that the upgrade is off full retail price and not a 2-year contract price, even though they make you sign another 2-year. And I'm not about to pay $500 for a phone.
So if it keeps doing this I guess I'll just take it in to get serviced, I really don't think they will care if it's rooted as long as it's a hardware issue.
Hi. My screen has a touch imput free area on the top part of it. It is about a half inch, just bellow the notiffication bar. My phone is rooted, and i have hotspot enabled. Other than that is stock.

I dont remember. I was rooted, and than updated my phone to the latest moto release. Lost root and than i had to flash somethig to get root back and than to unlock the hotspot app.
This was about 2 or 3 months back. All was ok till about a month ago, when i dropped the phone to the floor. Noticed the screen issue shortly after. Not sure if the drop caused this tho. There are no scratches on the screen, and it had a silicone case on it.

do you think the problem came from dropping your phone or were you messing with something on your phone? and yes your warrentty is voided, but you could get your own new screen on ebay for like 30 buxs and fix it yourself
Not sure if the drop caused it. Maybe. I noticed the pb soon after. I didn't mees with the phone, other than rooting and enaibeling hotspot.

I also have that problem, the problem is with the touchscreen not the software. At first, the touchscreen will not work for sometime you'll need to turn the screen off and on again. The problem will start more frequent. Then, the touchscreen on some part of the screen will not work at all. Only to fix is to call ATT for a repair. But, I live in Thailand and I brought mine at US. So, it not worth sending it back. I buy the touchscreen off ebay for $60 and change it myself. Working great now.
Pretty cheap on ebay, some for $40. My screen started acting the exact same way. I honestly believe it's heat damage. I remember reading that there are layers of the glass that are glued together. Extreme heat could cause the layers to come apart enough that sections of the screen are unusable.
My screen is exactly as the OP said, about a half-inch from the bar at the top. I noticed it soon after I started mounting the phone in my car near the top of the windshield where it could get some steady sunlight (obviously I didn't realize it was doing that until I noticed this problem).
I just ordered my replacement off ebay and will give it a shot. It's worth $40 if it'll let me use my phone properly again and hold off having to get a new phone prior to my upgrade price kicking in.
Hopefully installation won't be too hard. Good luck to the rest of ya!
This happen to my boyfriend's phone recently as well. I posted everywhere trying to find a solution but no one could help. It started to get worse after about a week or so where another section, towards the bottom of the screen, became unresponsive as well. My boyfriend finally called Motorola and sent it in for repair. We don't have ATT's insurance so we didn't try that way. Anyways, he's suppose to receive the phone this Monday...we'll see if it's fixed.

Did your touchscreen come with the adhesive? If not, you'll need to be extremely careful when you remove the old one cause you'll need the adhesive or you'll need the two sided tape with <0.25mm thick and apply it to around the touchscreen and remember to apply it as a close system or the dust will go under your screen.
If you need more info just PM me
I think i.ll call moto.

Sorry I haven't responded, hopefully you got your phone fixed but just in case you haven't...The phone came back and he hasn't had a problem with it whatsoever. The rep on the phone didn't know what was wrong with it or what they did to fix it but whatever they did, it worked. It took about a week or so to get the phone back and the only thing he had to pay for was shipping the phone out.

Iv ran into this problem in the summer. My charger port was a little funky and non stop went into car mode. i was rooted and at the time was not able to unroot it. I asked for a replacement and when i had to send it in i did EVERYthing possiable so they wouldnt be able to even turn it on to see its rooted lol.
i cracked the screen badly.
shoved a screwdriver into the charger port so they couldnt charge it.
messed up the battery charging cells so no battery could power it on.

Yeah i went a little overkill but i was not able to unroot at all because my phone would not connect to any PC. It was the only other way lol! it worked though!
This question has probably been asked at least 50 times on here. The general consensus is that most sprint stores won't care if you are rooted, as long as you are on a stock rom. However, it is very possible they could flag your device and void your warranty. Since unrooting and re-rooting only takes 5 minutes, just do it to be safe.
The second part of my question is more my interest. I am aware of the general consensus.

If you're gonna unroot (which I've never found necessary, after numerous screen and camera and speaker and bezel replacements), and remove any root related app, I'm not sure what more you could do, or what you're asking.

The reason I say yes is because it's really hit or miss, it depends on the employee who is taking care of you. There are many people who've had success without unrooting and plenty who haven't.
I'm just a better safe than sorry type of guy. Rooting and unrooting only take a couple minutes anyway. Also there are enough refurb evos that most stores will take in your phone for repair and have you pick up a refurb the next day while your phone gets sent off to be repaired for the next person.
But if you plan on not unrooting then I would suggest a stock rooted rom without any root related apps and also a cleared SD card. I've heard a few stories of being turned down for repair for root related material on the SD card even after they unrooted lol.

Got my new LG G2 on Thursday - enjoying things so far, no complaints... Except I looked under status, and my phone says "Rooting status: Rooted"... Anyone else experience that?
I haven't tried to do anything to it (yet), aside from accepting the OTA update... The only other curveball so far was that activation took awhile, the SIM it came with didn't match the order paperwork, and I had to figure that out for myself...
Looking for everyone's thoughts and/or guidance about what to do... On the one hand, I might root it myself once I am certain I am keeping it. On the other hand, I am worried what would happen if the phone develops issues and I needed to return it or whatnot..
Send it back asap and tell then the phone is used and how you know it's used.

Did your phone have all the plastic on it when you unboxed it? Should have been 2 on the metal outer ring. One around the camera. One over the back buttons. Front.back. and bottom of back. Sure didn't look like a restock. Had all the plastic: front, back, 2x along the sides, camera, buttons... I ordered it online and it was shipped to me; wouldn't that reduce chances it was a restock, or am i missing something...?
Not on the same phone, but I had a gnote 2 that came pre-bootloader unlocked. No screen cracks, nothing. It was sweet.

hmm. maybe they are preping a pre-rooted one for vzw? LOL ... who am i kidding. they would never do that.
Just after the phone was released, someone else posted that their phone said that it was rooted as well. If you're going to root anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. If not, you may want to exchange it (unless you want to revert to stock yourself - there's a thread that tells how to do that too).
Edit: here's the thread I was talking about. Read from post #20.
Ok, I've looked around for the answer and from what I've ready, I don't think I can do this but I want to make sure I properly understand what I have read.
My phone came stock with AT&T's MF3, i was able to successfully root and debloat the phone without issues. I was very careful the entire process and everything works perfectly. But then what did I do? I modded the build.prop (it was late and I was tired... I shouldn't have done it) file without thinking "I don't have a recovery method if this fails"... I KNEW there was no MF3 firmware available for recovery in Kies, and I knew no one has found an workable solution in Odin... But these didn't cross my mind that night. So, when I rebooted my phone, it would go past the samsung boot logo but never show AT&T's logo. The screen goes black after the Samsung logo, the remains black. After about 10 - 20 seconds the LED at the top left of the phone will turn on blue and throb. If I plug my phone into a USB port, it will try to install drivers as "MTP USB Device" but fail. The longer I leave the phone the warmer it gets regardless of whether or not it's plugged in.
I can boot into Download Mode and Stock Recovery
I've tested the drivers with my wife's phone and everything works as expected
I can boot into Stock Recovery and sideload files (I tried to flash an OTA file another user hosted here, it was sent via ADB sideload but it failed due to my debloating the /system/apps folder)
I've tried using stock recovery to flash a zip file to replace build.prop, but failed (not signed by samsung)
I've successfully flashed the "MF3_BTL_FIX" file another user created to kick a person out of the yellow triangle, when Kies fails.
I've tried best buy, but the samsung specialist will not even plug my phone into their computer
I have a backup build.prop, I just can't figure out how to get it on my phone without a custom recovery.
So, is there any way to replace the build.prop file with Odin/Heimdall or flashing or sideloading something from stock recovery?
My wife has the same phone, so I can also get files from her phone if I need to.
Any help or advice (even if it's "you have to wait for MF3 to be released in kies") would be greatly appreciated.
I'd find another bestbuy and see if you have better luck there.

Unfortunately, yes... It formats /data and /cache... it doesn't touch /system at all (from what I could tell), so the build.prop isn't restored to factory.
What stinks is, I believe ALL i have to do is replace that ONE file! Granted it's a major file... but still, ONE file, keeping me from booting to the OS. I've even been tempted to send it to one of the guys that does the jtag repairs, but to be honest I don't know enough about what they do to know if it would even help or if I could trust them (I assume I could from what little I've read)...
I may just have to go best buy hunting.

I know I've heard of mobiletechvideos before, and I know they would be trust worthy, I've heard GREAT things about them... The other place I saw unbricking phones I ran across on youtube, they have a link to an ebay store (if you search ebay for "Unbrick Service Hard Bricked Samsung Galaxy S4 i337" you'll find them). They are actually a whole lot cheaper than mobiletechvideos, which is one of the reasons I looked into them and also why I'm suspicious. Not to discredit them at all, because I personally don't know what kind of work they do.
I don't even know if Jtag will allow them to fix my build.prop file. The ebay place says if the phone doesn't boot normally after doing a repair, they will restore the latest stock ROM and since i'm on MF3, well... They couldn't do much. It also makes me suspicious that in their ebay description it says:
------------------------------------------------------
By purchasing this auction you agree to the following.
1. Jtag service will avoid your warranty.
2. There is no guaranty 100% to fixed your phone, but we do our best.
3. If the phone can not fix, we will refund only $ 30.00, minus $5.80 for shipping cost.
4. If you claim for any problem after successful unbricked the phone, you need to send it back for inspection. Because we tested it before ship.
-------------------------------------------------------
I mean, some of the wording used makes me uncomfortable... I could just be paranoid, the address on the auction IS Carrollton, Texas after all
Just thought I'd update everyone... never found a fix myself, but I did drive to the next nearest best buy with my phone in the yellow triangle mode and the guy said he knew exactly what to do. He was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful... He even knew how to get the phone in download mode We talked a bit, he never asked about what I may have done to the phone, but during our conversation I had told him I had backed everything up and he kind of winked and said he would take care of me. It seemed like he knew what happened, but he didn't say anything, and the "head Samsung rep", his boss was right there talking with us too. He did a full restore, and I was up and running in 10 minutes. If you get a friendly and knowledgeable employee it's pretty painless.

This is great to hear. Glad you got it fixed. That road trip was worth it

Thanks! I'm really glad to get it back. The road trip was well worth it. My wife and I decided to make a date out of it, we went to a nice restaurant while we were out without the kids, something they wouldn't have enjoyed and we wouldn't normally go to with them
