[Q] rooting MT4G - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys
so today i got my replacement MT4G from t mobile (my old one broke M4G2DE emmc chip, recovery errors.. etc).
so i checked the emmc chip on my new one and i got SEM04G (woot!!).
since i have the "good" chip, does that mean that im safe to root and not have any errors or encounter any problems?
thx

I have same chip no problems rooting for me.

you should be good to go, as long as you flash things properly and READ everything just to make sure lol. I have the good chip but I fudged up somewhere so I can only blame myself for my issue

Visionary does not unlock the Sim, Gfree will. I also have the good chip and rooted with Visionary but want the Sim unlock. I'm just nervous to try Gfree as everything is working perfect right now and I don't want to screw anything up.

Both methods use visionary - you mean you rooted with the root.sh method and not the gfree method.

I tried the root.sh and it won't work I think it has a bad chip and it sucks cuz this can mess up for me on the future if I had to get a replacement phone btw I alreadu have a rooted mt4g. I was just trying to root another one

hey so can anyone tell me...
how did ppl start getting recovery cache errors?
was it because of bad eMMC chip?
or something that they flashed wrong?
i rooted with VISIONARY root.sh...
soo am i safe?
i rly dont want to start getting those errors again.. lol

[Q] Quick Question???

OK i just got this phone today and want to get miui demonspeed on it. I know i have to root and all that but not sure whats guides to read exactly. I have a vibrant thats rooted and with miui as well but not to sure on the mytouc. What exactly do i ahve to do to get my mytouc right out of the box to miui. Thank you.
well if you know you have to root i guess your on the right track. Id say check out the post on the good emmc vs the bad one (in the general section) and determine which you have first. If its the bad one then you'll prolly not want to root at all.
If its the good one then you'll need to
1.perm root
2.flash clockwork
3.backup everything
4.wipe
5.flash Miui
6.Sit back and enjoy
OK i have the m42gde...What does that mean for me?

1.You have the bad chip/EMMc not the good one from ol sammy
2.You 'll need to use gfree method, visionary doesnt work...
3.That chip is prone to hi rates of failure check forum and brothers of MT4G...
4. Be extra careful with flashing
5. After you're rooted, you just flash the rom like on your sammy

well your only luck is if you can root using visionary root.sh

This is a false statement, as there has already been a case of completely stock M4G2DE chip failing with no root whatsoever - which means, whether you root it by root.sh or by gfree, it'll still be prone to failure.
The root guides are in Development section.

Trying to root

Ive rooted 3 phones before the one i am doing now. I am useing the same files, visonary, and this phone will not allow temp root. i did a full factory reset and still not allowing. what could be making this happen??? Thanks sorry wont let me post in development section
the bad eMMC chip....visionary (root.sh) only works with the good chips, while gfree method is used for both the good and bad chips. give the gfree method a try if youre having problems http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
also look here first to see if you have the bad chip or not http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081243

Keep in mind with a rooted phone and a bad eMMC, you are using a ticking time bomb. Keep in mind the phone will fail [brick], it might not be now, it might not be a week but it will happen.
That's not true... It will only fail if you don't know what you are doing and that could happen w a good chip too ... When u root via gfree, proceed to also flash the 85. 2007 ENG bootloader

There are well educated, when it comes to Android, people all over the Internets when it comes to this phone going FUBAR due to a faulty eMMC chipset.
If the chip set is bad it's a ticking timebomb.
That's an opinion that anyone is entitled to but I am speaking purely based on personal experience... I have rooted many phones with both good and bad chips, none of which have ever had in any problems... And based on actual results the phone with a "bad" eMMC chip holds max overclock much better and easier than my phone with a good chip... I was one who went back to stock on the bad chip without flashing stock radio and everyone said it was the end of the world and it would never have s off again... However after editing the misc. Img in mmcblk0p17 with hex editor I now have s off... So it just depends on who's flashing the phone

I was using the gfree method to root the phone the problem is trying to get temp root it stayed on the visonary screen, trying to temp root and stayed that way over night, never was able to temp root to even get started. i tried visonary + and ver. 11 also. so not sure were to go from here
Use visionary 14. Check only the second and third boxes then click temproot. Run commands through Android terminal emulator.

Check this out, i would be willing to bet this will work. It sounds much more difficult than it actually is. Just follow the steps and it will be simple.. i downloaded HEX QL editor which is free and super easy to use.... the version number that u need to edit is on the furthest right side (misc.img). The directions below are easy to follow and worked for me to get s off and root when it seemed impossible. Long story short, you will pull the misc.img to your sdcard and then plug phone into computer and open the misc.img on sdcard using the hex editor. Change the version number and save that file as miscnew.img and place on sdcard. Important to remember that the version you will be flashing is unable to obtain root however gfree and visionary will still carry out the proper root process you just wont notice permroot until a custom rom is flashed....i realized this after running the gfree process at least 8 times lmao . Ask any questions u have that are unclear from this link.

Check the bootloaders, if its the .85 use Visonary method and if its .86 the gfree method will work.
forget visionary r14 and go with r11 that version will work 100%

none of the visonary versions work at all. not sure what to do.
Most probably you have Gingerbread on your MT4G, or you're talking about Panache, and forgot to mention those facts.
Please go and check Android OS version in Settings/About.

[Q] Root Methods: Gfree vs. Visionary?

Hey all,
Now that I have my HTC Sensation, I feel more at ease perma-rooting my MT4G and playing with it (read too many threads about bricks and problems to feel comfortable with it before). Question though...
Which method to use? The invasive Gfree for TRUE S=Off or the less-invasive Visionary method with LABEL S=Off? I was going to opt for the Gfree, but suddenly I'm reading about all kinds of issues with it.
So what's the consensus? Are most people using Gfree now and I just happen to be reading the vocal minority of those who've had issues?

Go with the root.sh method and get the .85 bootloader.
Sent from my HTC Glacier
+ 1...try visionary with root.sh first...sometimes it doesn't work and then you will ned to do gfree-just make sure you follow the steps to get the engineering bootloader as that can come in handy down the road. Also you should probably check which emmc chip you have first cause if you have the "bad" one, you may want to think twice about rooting...
Check for which emmc you have first to save time. If it's the bad one then go straight for gfree. If not then go for root.sh.

not certainly. I have the same chip, and root.sh method was failing at the beginning, with an error regarding wpx.ko
So I had to use Gfree, and it worked
Funny you should mention it, but the root.sh method does not appear to be working for me either after multiple attempts. It's likely I am getting the same "error" you were, about the wpx.ko saying "Not implemented", but I read that was normal so, oh well. Was about to say to hell with it and try the gfree method. Is there any real reason NOT to use gfree?

[Q] Visionary root with bad emmc? (Not Noob)

Hey guys I'm back from the MT4GS forums on behalf of my bro,
So he's visiting from college, and he wanted me to root his phone. So I checked his emmc before I started and he had the bad one
well I know there is no thought of even using gfree (what i used). So could I use Visionary or maybe even Revolutionary?
I have a bad chip and when I tried to root with visonary using the root. Sh method it didn't work I Don know it mite work for u depends if not your best bet is the gfree method and hope he has a good bad emmc

"Not noob" and your post don't go well together.
Visionary is a method of achieving temp-root under 2.2.1. Doesn't work under 2.3.4.
Gfree or root.sh are methods for achieving perm-root. They also don't work under 2.3.4.
When rooting "bad" chip, root.sh method will not work with >99% probability. You can only root "bad" chip with gfree.
If you read some more ("recently discovered dangers" thread in Development, and another zillion of threads in General and Q&A with the same annoying questions), you'll discover that gfree ISN'T the cause of failure for "bad" chips.
To use gfree, you'll most probably need to downgrade. Read the relevant thread in G2 section. Link - in Glacier Wiki, under "Root", "Gingerbread".
btw I was able to Root my Bro's MT4G with visionary r14 on the perm root option and It is still working fine today....
Perm root on visionary does not work unless you're S-Off.
With the "bad chip" there is no way to get S-Off without gfree.

If you still on 2.2.1 then you can easily root with visionary and root.sh.
Unless he has MG2DE eMMC, in which case he'll need gfree.
OP, instead of "hearing" things, read the stickies. And then use gfree.
Well If I go to the bootloader screen it reads
Gracier pvt ship s-on
Hboot-0.86.000
Microp-0429
Radio-26.03.02.26_m
Emmc-boot

Since you don't have engineering bootloader, whatever you read there is irrelevant.
I already wrote what you should do.
So can I just flash the engineering bootloader . And then just root with root.sh ?

I thought it was as obvious as I could make it.
To the [OP] Since you have that chip you have to root using ./gfree. There is no other way to do it. If you try to use the root.sh method you'll end up getting ticked, posting a new thread about how root.sh doesn't work, then we'll remind you of this post. Where @Jack_R1 told you to use ./gfree. Then you'll get all mad because we are being rude, and you'll want to smack us.
So instead of doing that read my "noobie" thread, in my signature, then use the ./gfree and give us a bottle of beer since we helped you.
I have 2 MT4Gs, both rooted and flashed.
Mine wasn't updated and had the SEM04G chip. Easy to root using methods with visionary.
My wife's was 2.3.4 updated with M4G2DE chip. Downgrade was easy enough. Rooting was a pain in the neck.
I went through every option until I got to the True S=Off tutorial using gfree. Once I went through that process, I was permarooted, and then changed to eng bootloader. It can be done without bricking...it's just that much harder to do.

gfree is not the only way to permaroot the MT4G, but it's a good way to do it. I was able to get permarooted with the root.sh method with my phone. Had to try a couple of methods a couple of times each before I got to the gfree method, which finally worked for my wife's phone.

HTC phones are always harder to root than others, since they require S-Off and all that stuff. but when the hard part is complete, the rest is very simple and easy to understand.
I now know that. Lol. But I also have the hd7 and that's even harder to dev unlock "root" . But now I'm only buying htc phones. I like the UI that they have.. and they get more support from devs .. its been almost a year and the sidekick is till stuck with froyo .. they are saying that tmobile is not going to release a gb update ..
