Hello I need help roothing - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well like the title said .i have tried to root the htc glacier/my touch 4g . I have tried every thing exept the gfree one cause I hear that it has some problems.. Anyways I cant make my s=off . I have the 0.86.0000 bootloader and I was woundering if that could be the problem ... I have 2.2.1 . Thank you .

Rooted two mytouches with gfree never had a problem bro. Try considering gfree as an option if it all fails. There is even a video about it on YouTube.

If you still on 2.2.1 then you can easily root with visionary and root.sh.

Unless he has MG2DE eMMC, in which case he'll need gfree.
OP, instead of "hearing" things, read the stickies. And then use gfree.

Well If I go to the bootloader screen it reads
Gracier pvt ship s-on
Hboot-0.86.000
Microp-0429
Radio-26.03.02.26_m
Emmc-boot
Sep 27 2010, 11:12:59

Since you don't have engineering bootloader, whatever you read there is irrelevant.
I already wrote what you should do.

So can I just flash the engineering bootloader . And then just root with root.sh ?

I thought it was as obvious as I could make it.

To the [OP] Since you have that chip you have to root using ./gfree. There is no other way to do it. If you try to use the root.sh method you'll end up getting ticked, posting a new thread about how root.sh doesn't work, then we'll remind you of this post. Where @Jack_R1 told you to use ./gfree. Then you'll get all mad because we are being rude, and you'll want to smack us.
So instead of doing that read my "noobie" thread, in my signature, then use the ./gfree and give us a bottle of beer since we helped you.

I have 2 MT4Gs, both rooted and flashed.
Mine wasn't updated and had the SEM04G chip. Easy to root using methods with visionary.
My wife's was 2.3.4 updated with M4G2DE chip. Downgrade was easy enough. Rooting was a pain in the neck.
I went through every option until I got to the True S=Off tutorial using gfree. Once I went through that process, I was permarooted, and then changed to eng bootloader. It can be done without bricking...it's just that much harder to do.

gfree is not the only way to permaroot the MT4G, but it's a good way to do it. I was able to get permarooted with the root.sh method with my phone. Had to try a couple of methods a couple of times each before I got to the gfree method, which finally worked for my wife's phone.

Well I'm rooted now so... how do I close this thread ??
And I rooted with gfree to s-off then I unrooted but my s was still off.. then I rooted it againg but with root.sh .. then I install the engineering bootloader..

Good deal. Welcome to the world of android modding.
Leave the thread as is. Others can use it as reference.

HTC phones are always harder to root than others, since they require S-Off and all that stuff. but when the hard part is complete, the rest is very simple and easy to understand.

I now know that. Lol. But I also have the hd7 and that's even harder to dev unlock "root" . But now I'm only buying htc phones. I like the UI that they have.. and they get more support from devs .. its been almost a year and the sidekick is till stuck with froyo .. they are saying that tmobile is not going to release a gb update ..

Rooting the G2? A little help kinda confused with things.

Hey guys ill be joining this side of the forums now on monday and I'm really excited. Just I'm kinda confused about a few things and I was wondering if anyone could help enlighten a few things for me.
I know what Root is, S-off, Cid yada yada and I'm not new to rooting at all. I have adb and etc and I kinda want to do this on ubuntu because my vista is kind of janky at times.
Now apparently there is Temporary Root and Permanent Root and of course I want Permanent root, s-off, etc.
1.Now from what I read there has been apparently an update that updated the G2 to 1.22 or something like that? I read its rootable apparently but you need a windows application called gfree or something? Is this possible to do using just ubuntu?
2. Now to obtain root, s-off etc do I have to obtain temporary root first, then permanent root? Its kinda confusing coming in a noob to this device and trying to figure this all out. And do the methods vary with which firmwire your phone comes with? I'm assuming mines will come with the newest OTA since I'm receiving it Monday.
3. Also from what I'm seeing apparently having S-off and root and what not matters on what rom your running also? I don't want to flash a rom then end up loosing root or something. And Noo I DO NOT want to stay stock once I obtain root. I'm kind of a flashoholic.
Thanks to anyone willing to help I really appreciate it.

Shouldn't yall warn him about using VISIONary first? SOMETIMES, no NOT all the time but SOMETIMES people get stuck in a boot loop from using the VISIONary method. I would not recommended it, if you have know how to use ADB, use it. I'm pretty sure that they have ADB for Linux because they do have the Android SDK on Linux(at least I think they do). All you need to do in order to root with the safer/recommended way is ADB. All you have to do is ADB Push some files to your phone then run them on your phone's Terminal Emulator App, its pretty simple. Though I have not personally rooted a G2 yet(I get mine tomorrow) but I have spent at least a week learning about how to root the G2.
Check out the wiki, explains how to root using rage+gfree.

I followed these instructions and rooted my phone fairly easily.

First of all follow the link I gave him, did you bother to do that, there was a warning, second of all I've helped a lot of people root following the videos and have had zero bricks as long as they do everything I posted in the link, third I rooted this way with zero problems, when people brick their phones its not visionary that bricks phones it people that think they know how to properly use visionary when they don't that bricks phones, its not just pressing the " attempt perm root" button to root your phone, you have to press certain settings in order to use it right.

Alright and how would one fix a boot loop caused by Rage and GFree? I have searched before but I never found anything on it.
EDIT: And if you could, please show me some links with people stuck in a boot loop caused by Rage and GFree, I would like to read it and learn from their mistakes so that I don't do them.

hey david279, which radio(bandbase) did you have on your new G2 when you rooted with GFree?
Hmm just to make shure. I obtain root first, then use that gfree app on my rooted vision to get sim unlock, s-off etc?
Never mind just read it. This is actually really simple. *facepalm* sorry guys for the thread space ill get my topic removed.
I had the 26.03.02.26. I updated it to the newest one in the radio thread in the dev forum. I gotta use to those long radio version numbers.

Thanks, just confirming that 26.03.02.26 was still rootable with the wiki root instructions, there seems to be some confusion about if you can still root the 26.03.02.26 radio with the wiki, and you just confirmed that you still can.

Easiest root method for hboot. 860000

What's the easiest I used the s-off method the best one straight from my phone but I got it replaced with tmo and gfree looks too complicated to do and undo any easy way that I can.do it on my phone Idk how to use adb

After following that procedure, you'll have the 0.85.2007 bootloader. The version number is lower, but it's actually better because it's the engineering version.

Visionary ROOTS the phone.
S-OFF means UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER.
Please read and understand the big difference between the 2. There is a ton of info, both on the forum and in Google. And if you don't understand - please refrain from messing with your phone.

All I can say is you're not following it correctly. Dozens upon dozens (or more) have used these guides with no problem, so if it's not working, the only other variable is user error. Plus, you didn't tell us anything about what's not working, so how could anyone help?

I'll ask in a simpler fashion i guess.
1) we know you've previously rooted your phone
2) we know you are now only keeping s-on.
What errors are you getting when you try to do the ./gfree method or the root.sh method..
if they are not working you are getting errors. What are they.
I dont want to use gfree since I see a lot of newbies having problems unrooting

so, i used gfree correctly this time i guess, it worked quite brilliantly. sorry for the noob-ness.

Rooting New Gingerbread release

Well it is now official that gingerbread has been leak/released for our G2 and I'm sure lot of us who had soft bricks are happy to know we can unbrick it and now to our next problem rooting it
I have tried 2 ways so far first is the wiki way with psneutur and gfree, and other is temp root with visionary
My results for both came negative,
Gfree/ psneutur gave me permission denied after I pushed it in
Visionary jus gave me black screen
And gingerbreak requirs s-off
So let's gather info and or figure out a way to root new gingerbread if any tried downgrade method let all us know with steps what you did
Here is the info for new gingerbread
Ship s-on
Hboot 0.82.0008
Radio 26.08.04.30M3
eMMC-boot
Apr 13 2011,
So hope we can find solution to root and we can get custom roms back on it
you need to try to gain temproot with gingerbreak. can you please come over #g2root ?
I just said I tempted and it just stuck on trying to root nothing happen and I will go what irc server? Freenode?

Visionary (as evidence by the sticky at the top of the dev phone saying DONT USE VISIONARY TO PERM ROOT) has bricked many a phones that have only now been able to be fixed. I think its just a trust issue and comes to down to each individual and what they personally think and believe I personally would never use visionary again no matter how many times its updated or "fixed". The trust has been broken.
Idk why there's hate on visionary... I rooted my phone the second day the process was released and I've never had an issue since...? And I've rooted 2 other g2s well after and still never had any issues... just followed instructions. I understand it can brick your phone, but then again... was it really visionary that bricked it? Or was it an user error placing blame?? Just saying....
Sent from my HTC Desire Z/G2 using XDA App
yeah i rooted my g2 using the visionary method and have had no issues. and it seems like a lot of the bricking has occurred since i rooted, so i dont get it.
i did visionary root with success, but put yourself in the other end of ppls shoes who did use visinary an you get a brick and no way out of it, other than have gfree with jus pushing, and everythign else is done for you, i would go that route than a higher chance of bricking,
But this thread is not bout bricking this is about how to obtain root on the new stock rom that is out
Yes please! if anyone finds out how to root the G2 with stock Gingerbread could you please post! thanks in advance!

user error? lol in a one-click root... maybe they were pressing the top right corner of the button and that's their error lol
I don't know, either, but there has to be some reasonable explanation, doesn't there? After all, many people (myself included) had no trouble rooting with Visionary. OTOH, this is my second G2 - the first went back under warranty. With the first one, Visionary was unsuccessful at perm-rooting. This one, worked on the first try. Odd? Computers are NOT supposed to behave randomly - so why the difference?
when someone comes up with the visionary source, there are people that can understand it. until then it's a black box.
+1
I'm in the same boat. I just got a brand new G2 off craigslist, and was very happy to see that it had gingerbread. But to my extreme dissappointment, I cannot root it or downgrade it to gain root. Below are the things I have tried and didnt work.
Visionary
Gingerbreak (v1,0, 1.1, 1.2)
Rage
Super One-click
Z4Root
Androot
Gold card, for downgrading, also tried Gold card with above root methods.
I have also tried taking the stock Froyo PC10IMG and modified the info txt to read it as a newer version, and it loaded it, checked it, then just went back to the bootloader screen like there was no image there at all. Last night I was thinking that if I pulled the internal battery (the little tiny one) then it would lose its info, allowing me to load any PC10IMG I wanted. NOPE. Rom and all its info and settings are still intact. Weird, cuz I thought that's what that little battery was for. So, I'm out of options. I love the rom, it's fast as hell and the battery life is far better than when I had my last G2. I just wanna overclock, add some sounds without using Zedge or something (want internal mods that arent dependant on memory using apps), and do some theming. Oh, and removing that horrible pink bloat >:]
I just know that our awesome Devs will come up with something.
XDA ROCKS!!!!!
Waiting?!
Any updates regarding the root?
I tried everything, and nothing works.
I even tried to resend it to the repair center to get froyo, they returned it back saying that they could no longer Downgrade it!
well this is my argument, you can call them and ask them for one that is froyo
complain to them that you have netflix and paying for a service to use on your phone reason why you got it, and since "THEY" updated and made it unsuably they are obligated to give you one that can use netflix or a replacement that can use it as they have done something that was not confirmed with you if you sent it for simple repair, you did not get your phone back to how it was you got something different...
start this fight you will probably end up with a mytouch 4g

Hi!
The config options that you would have to change are written to the emmc on partition17 (main version) or partition7 (S-OFF, SuperCID, SIM-Lock) so that will not change if you pull any kind of battery.
The only chance to root this rom is that we find a new temp-root method and then do the usual things (misc_version, goldcard, downgrade, gfree, ...)
I do not expect that someone publishes a new temp-root before either T-Mobile/HTC rolled out the OTA or a different device running 2.3.4 really needs it.
Have fun - Guhl

[Q] Visionary root with bad emmc? (Not Noob)

Hey guys I'm back from the MT4GS forums on behalf of my bro,
So he's visiting from college, and he wanted me to root his phone. So I checked his emmc before I started and he had the bad one
well I know there is no thought of even using gfree (what i used). So could I use Visionary or maybe even Revolutionary?
I have a bad chip and when I tried to root with visonary using the root. Sh method it didn't work I Don know it mite work for u depends if not your best bet is the gfree method and hope he has a good bad emmc
Sent from my Tweaked out RCmix3D myTouch 4G via xda premium !
"Not noob" and your post don't go well together.
Visionary is a method of achieving temp-root under 2.2.1. Doesn't work under 2.3.4.
Gfree or root.sh are methods for achieving perm-root. They also don't work under 2.3.4.
When rooting "bad" chip, root.sh method will not work with >99% probability. You can only root "bad" chip with gfree.
If you read some more ("recently discovered dangers" thread in Development, and another zillion of threads in General and Q&A with the same annoying questions), you'll discover that gfree ISN'T the cause of failure for "bad" chips.
To use gfree, you'll most probably need to downgrade. Read the relevant thread in G2 section. Link - in Glacier Wiki, under "Root", "Gingerbread".
btw I was able to Root my Bro's MT4G with visionary r14 on the perm root option and It is still working fine today....
Perm root on visionary does not work unless you're S-Off.
With the "bad chip" there is no way to get S-Off without gfree.

I've been rooted, gfree, bad emmc chip for about a year. No problems. And I'm a flashaholic.
Check out my site: http://www.857music.com
ok fine....but it worked :/
BTW:
After temprooting with the visionary app...I clicked attempt Perm Root.... then temp-root, then permroot....and It had to have been S-off because I changed the radio for where he lives...

Rooting noob

Hey guys I'm bout to root my firnds phone and I was wondering on the xda thread it said after I downgrade from gingerbread all I have to do is use any FROYO rooting method to get full perm root...I'm a guy from the G2 and Desire Z forum and was wondering if I can root the mytouch 4G using the G2 instructions with gfree or is their an advanced way meant for only the mytouch 4G(glacier)
*all I need to know is a rooting method for the phone NOT downgrading.
* thanks to everybody contributing in this

I believe that you MUST downgrade the phone to froyo before you can root it,
And I would say it would save you alot of trouble to just follow one of this device's guides instead of using the G2s.
And yea, what you said on the first part is correct, you downgrade from gingerbread to froyo, then use a froyo rooting method (from this device) and perm root.
Yes, you can the guide in the G2 and Desire Z forums guide to downgrade. It says "[GUIDE] Downgrade G2 (2.3.X) & DZ (2.3.X) & mT4g (2.3.4) & DHD w/ S-ON to Stock Froyo". I used the guide, worked flawlessly. Guy did a great job!

So to conclude your saying I can use the G2 rooting method to root the mytouch 4G after downgrading?

No. You must use one of the guides in our development section that are stickied. I prefer ./gfree, so use this one.

I recently downgraded and rooted my mytouch 4g gingerbread phone to install ICS. If you are already downgraded then follow "Ultimate Guide and CM7 Installation (Works with any other ROM)" guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier#Froyo_2.2.1 It worked perfectly for me.

Check you eMMC chip to see if you have the bad chip. I had some problems with the gfree method. I could not get a temproot using visionary So I followed the other guide which I posted earlier.

There's always a chance of bricking, but that's only when you don't follow the guide. Just make sure to read the instructions thoroughly, follow the steps, and you should have no problem.
Alright I think I have enough info to move on to the rooting
I chosse the one with gfree with the visionary

this is the thread that i followed to root MT4G after downgrading;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
it is gfree method pretty much push gfree onto phone using android sdk and use visionary+ to temp root then later perm root the device.
it's pretty thorough
check it out if you haven't already.
there are alternative methods to rooting such as the "one click" methods but i'd stay away from those.
gfree method is exactly the same for G2 and MT4G.
You can use the same thread for downgrading (just use the right file for MT4G), and use the same procedure for rooting. If you worked on G2, and read the stickied rooting thread in Development section, you probably noticed the similarities yourself.

Hang on a sec, is this true? I have to downgrade before rooting? There's no way to root a Gingerbread T-Mobile MyTouch 4G? I'm starting from complete stock T-Mo. any help would be awesome, thanks.
If you can read it all over the forum, and can't find anything else in the million stickied and non-stickied guides - why would you think that there is some other way?
There's either HTCDev unlock or downgrading.
Because I'm stupid and I'm a lazy noob who wants other people to do my searching for me.
Oh, was I being the "idiot forum member" again that asks a question and therefore deserves attitude? I apologize. I'm sorry to have wasted 30 seconds of your life.
Before you say, "but, but, but it's just that nobody ever searches... " just remember you could have just ignored my question.
Thanks for the HTCDev suggestion. I'll look it up to see what that's all about.
If you have froyo 2.2 then you don't have to downgrade

Unfortunately I'm on Gingerbread. I'll follow the downgrade instructions, I guess. I know I might be asking for it, but it seems pretty convoluted trying to figure out the accepted method today for rooting this phone. All the methods say they're best but they're all saying that at a particular time.
Is there any one of the methods that performs a SIM unlock?

And every thread has a date on it. Gfree can unlock SIM.
