Moving to Verizon need hellpppppp. - EVO 4G General

I'm moving to Verizon because of complicated reasons. What phone should I get? I freaking love my evo and I have no clue what to get.

Get a "full featured" flip phone so you dont have to worry about going over your limited data plan.

Thunderbolt seems like the obvious choice. It is the HTC flagship phone for Verizon. It is the Evo on steroids I believe

Thunderbolt.

Obviously you should get the Droid X 2
Unless you live in an LTE area, and are dying to have your battery absolutely demolished. Then, you should get the Thunderbolt.

The Thunderbolt really is an Evo on steroids, as lehalter said, and I think it's Verizon's best phone right now. The Droid Charge (Samsung) is nice too, but especially if you like Sense, Thunderbolt is the way to go. My dad just got it after having the original Droid, and he's really happy with it.
I'd have a hard time buying anything that's not LTE compatible on VZW right now, unless you live in the middle of nowhere and aren't likely to see LTE in the next 2 years. VZW's LTE network is everything we wish Sprint's 4G network was (well, except for cheap and soon, unlimited). That would knock the Incredible 2 and Droid X2 off my list, personally.

I don't think it's conclusively been shown that Verizon is throttling LTE if you go over a certain cap. I honestly don't know the details, but I think it's safe to say that one would be better off getting on VZW now before the "unlimited" plan really does go away.
In any event, the OP said he needs to move to VZW and probably doesn't need us to try to talk him out of it. I think the question is just which VZW phone is going to be best for an Evo lover, and I think the Thunderbolt is a pretty clear choice.

I'd get the Droid charge.

They have openly admitted they throttle.
They've said its only the "top 5%"
(Whatever thats supposed to mean)
Edit :
http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/verizon-will-throttle-data-for-the-top-5-of-users-and-optimize-content-for-all-2011023/

i just left verizon.. data throttling was pi$$ing me off, i use about 10 to 13 gigs a month and that was without tethering...
on the note of throttleing.. big v woiuld actually shut off my 3g connection and id be stuck with 1x for the rest of the day... also they are not friendly to tetherin.... DO NOT MAKE THIS INTO A TETHERING FIGHT
back to the original topic...
i personally would go with the thunderbolt... even though it is "old tech" just to lock in the 4g unlimited now.
before anyone starts in... verizon's ceo has already announced that tiered data will start this summer... which so happens to be right before the dual cores hit...., and their dual core lte phones just so happened to have been "delayed" for "further testing".....whatever .......
Again i would stick with thunderbolt... DO NOT GO TO MOTO... moto has awesome phones and i hate to say it but personally any moto phone is 10 times better in hardware and some software than anyone else right now... however they all have encrypted bootloaders..
this means that yes you can have root access, however what this means is that ther are NO TRULY CUSTOM ROMS... think cyanogenmod and asop... also NO kernels, and no truly great upgrades...
dx is much better that evo .. however it is ristricted due to the encrypted bootloader... and no the bootloader will not be broken ....
plain and simple switch now to make sure you get unlimited 4g, or wait and take a chance, also again i would rec thunderbolt do to at least htc at this time is listening to its customers....

First off... If he never wants to mod anything on his phone then yes, he should get something made by Motorola. Second... All he has to do is shut off the extra radio to save power. You do know that you are on the Evo section of the forum right? Most people on here have their WiMax radios turned off because they don't get WiMax in their area. The X2 only scores about 500-600 higher than the Thunderbolt on quadrant... and it has an entire extra core. Motorola can do better than that.

yea the battery normally sucks but i rooted my buddies and tweaked it a bit he is now getting 8 - 9 hours ( LoL) with moderate usage
he was getting 5 - 6

depends where you live. if you are in a 4g area, get a Droid Charge... the screen alone will win you over and it gets better battery life than the thunderbolt.
If no 4g, get the incredible 2.
Be warned however, Verizon is having lots of issues with their 4g network and/or 4g handsets.

Dude. Seriously. If 2.2 hits the market before the hero gets 2.1, Sprint and HTC are going to look like fools. And have some SERIOUSLY pissed off customers on their hands. Maybe if THEY thought about putting their apps in the market instead of trying to implement them into the software at release (as the article mentions google is planning to do), maybe their wouldn't be such a lag in updates.

+10. Living in an area that is completely covered by 4g makes this purchase damn near compulsory. Though I must admit....no one would have to twist my arm very hard to convince me to buy the evo, lol!
4g
the only thing sprint hasnt told us about the evo is the 4g to my knowledge is going to be limited to certain kb's, not sure of the number yet not sure if this is even true but def a rumor from my friend that works at sprint, while 3g on the evo will be unlimited but they are selling 4g by the gb i think, like for an extra 10 bucks on top of your data plan it gives you 4g but its limited, i use my hero as a modem so that would suck if i got an evo. idk yet i guess we will see in due time.

4g will be unlimited and 3g is capped at 5gb. I work for dealer who sales sprint and that thats the norm for data. 3g is capped because we dont own all parts of that network, where as 4g is ours with Clear, so yeah

Actually, the rumor I heard from someone at Sprint (not a store employee) is that it will be exactly like the current 4G plans... unlimited 4G, 5GB limit on 3G. The only thing they are currently wrestling with is pricing on the voice + data plans.

Verizon's launch of LTE in Nov making anyone rethink Droid X??

As of 2 days ago i have never been so sure about wanting a new phone as i was the Droid X. Now there are rumors all over the internet that Verizon will launch its 4G network (aka LTE) on November 15th and have a couple of 4G devices on sale on black Friday. An on top of that the rumors are that they will sell the iphone in January on the 4G network. (not that ill choose the iphone over the Droid X).
I am just wondering, am I jumping the gun here with the Droid X? I am assuming whatever phone with launch with 4G is going to have to be kickass phones. I am also assuming that the Droid X will not be 4G compatible. I hate to pass up this beast and then its just rumors but for some reason i think there is some truth in these ones. Thoughts please
I would venture to guess that the Droid X will be 4G compatible...maybe?
LTE doesn't make that much of a difference to me. Take a look at 4G -- it just got switched on in a few more cities, bringing the number up to a paltry dozen or so (I think? Not quite sure). LTE might also be slow to roll out. Besides, it's a new technology, and it might eat battery like on the EVO.

Well from what i read Verizon will not charge the extra $10 for 4G but will however used tiered data plans for its 4G phones like AT&T is doing. SO goodbye unlimited data plans. Doesnt make sense, the second they come out with the powerful devices that are basically mini laptops, hotspots and GPS in , they put a cap on the data for these data hundry devices. Just clearly shows again how money hungry they are. Like $30 a month from millions of customers is not enough.
That said, after thinking it through i will also get the doid X. 6 months is a long time to wait to see if rumors pan out. Plus this puppy is running on 1Ghz and will be plenty fast. I even saw is video today where i played video at 60fps. Iphone 4 can only do 30. The video was so so smooth.

Want to bet 4G phones wind up requiring the highest tier? Effectively charging for 4G. I just don't see VzW (and every other carrier) not taking advantage of early adopters.
No. Lets say it comes out in 6 months in "select areas". I can upgrade my phone one year from July 15th and more than likely LTE won't be in my area until mid to late 2011 or even 2012. Not worried one bit.
I can't see the lte footprint being useable for a couple years anyways. Dig the X, but think I'll b sticking with my Droid for a while.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
My omnia just broke last week (won't charge any batteries, i think the temp sensor is fried)
So I don't really have a choice but to upgrade to the X, it's the only phone i can do early because otherwise i have to wait till august. And this vx6700 is not very nice to me.
That being said i'm a little upset with the hdmi issue, that was one of my main reasons.
but just to talk about 4g i really doubt it will be much of a battery hog. because sprint basically is just reselling a wimax service (which i do get in my area around chicago) and it is fast but it's not worth using unless i'm on a laptop (because of the battery drain) and soon the unlimited will probably go away like the rest.
And if i'm not mistaken the sprint 4g (wimax) runs at about 2.5ghz? or so. Where I think verizion will incorporate this in there 4g.
http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iMbsPSv2vatAVvbz_8n0xU3Mfvnw
While 700mhz doesn't provide much bandwidth, My guess there going to use that in tandem with eh EVDO (i think 900mhz ish?) that they currently have, kind of like an A/G router will use both the freq to increase throughput.
Call me stupid but i think having another antenna at a lower freq like that will use up less power then the sprint one at 2.5ghz, but i could be wrong.

Moto Atrix (Dual C) vs Epic

Just watched a demo of the MOTO Atrix dual core....wow the scrolling is horrible. Side by side with the Epic, the differences are HUGE! It's hard not to smile knowing that the EPIC still dominates even dual core offerings.
I noticed it's an ATT "4G" phone, so after going to ATT site and clicking their 4G link, it took me to a map of blue colored coverage, which oddly enough looks EXACTLY like their 3G coverage. Upon further examination, that's EXACTLY what they show you, the 3G coverage. There are but a small handful of cities that actually implement TMOs HSPA+ '4G'. Just like apple, att using their 'full of ****' marketing practices. It's really sad how much $ apple and att has made selling inferior hardware and service for twice that of which I pay for the Epic on Sprint.
I have 2 Epics, with unlimited everything (except the landline 1500min pool), and both phones plans combined is cheaper than 1 iphone with unlimited everything, except the 4GB worth of data. And that's 3G data!
Man that's so sad. I can't believe how many fools there are out there.
Samsung can't get Froyo right to save their life, but even the Eclair Epic is a better choice than the Atrix.
Atrix makes sammiches tho
Atrix? Meh.

My friend who I have known for 8 years bought the Atrix with the Dock and everything spending $500+. Personally, I would have not invested so much in a device that is not going to easy to make custom kernel's for. Matter of fact, its a locked boot loader which means you are screwed. Even Cyanogen himself said today that he would support the device had it not been for that fact. Still, its kinda cool, but makes developing for it a lot ( LOT ) harder than it should be.
Yet they make the XOOM developer friendly. Go figure, why would they not choose this with the phone? Do we have the provider to blame? Is it what they want for their phone systems, or are we just being put to a test to see how far developers can push the envelope with the newest phones to make custom roms/kernels?

Honestly, I can not stand AT&T. They have the same pricing as Verizon, yet they're inferior (network wise) to Sprint. The only reason they had a chance in the mobile market industry is because of the iPhone (which I still prefer Android over).
Now that Verizon has iPhone, ATT will probably be bought out by another carrier, or something weird.

LOL -- ATT....did someone just defend ATTs service???
Sprint's CLEAR division has LTE in Phoenix running 100Mb down and peak 47Mb uploads.........ATT probably runs their whole network off of one of the LTE connections.
There will always be someone who lives in a dead zone. WiMax ins't there yet, but between Sprint and Verizon's networks, Phoenix couldn't be covered any better. Roms allow for forced roam, which I had on my WinMo 6.5 phone.....and could switch between networks and roam 3G if I had a Sprint issue. It made for the most robust phone I've ever seen anyone in possession of (TP2 was quad band).

Their 'enhanced' 3G is quite fast....Got over 5Mb on my sisters Samsung Tab sitting 100ft in front of the tower....2Mb up. Damn't Sprint, unlock our WiMax UPLOAD already.......bandwidth is clearly available up and down, it won't do jack to the network if they let us full duplex. I mean, it's a phone..... I couldn't imagine FB pic uploads swamping the network with just a fraction of the HD YouTube streaming

sprints customer service in stores sucks big time **** and thats another reason why i left.
some of the employees are just braindead and dont what is right or left
att and verizon are the best right now and because they know what they are doing and thats why they are so big
sprints barely getting its stupid company ass back in gear after all the years it was behind and watch it fall back down soon

Almost all store employees are dumb at any carrier.
What counts for sprint and tmobile is that they dont disconnect your service if you dont pay wkthing 2-3 days.I can be 2 weeks late with sprint and not get charged extra and not even have a warning from sprint.
Plus on sprint and tmobile I can download 80gb of movies a month, they dont have data cap.So if you use your phone as your primary internet then tmo and sprint is only choices.
I just wish I dint leave tmobile for sprint because speed was way faster on tmobile, and my promised sprint's 4g never came.
Yeah your ridge about Tue paying the.bill late. I've been late before and they don't even care.

The atrix is a far more powerful device, but the first true dual cores will be powered by omap4 and perhaps 3rd Gen snapdragons or tegra3's. That's when it all really begins.

[Q] Would you get rid of ur EVO 4G if there was no port of ICS for it?

Keeping the faith on CM9.

Without a doubt there will be a port for ICS on this phone. Money has it that even the G1 will get a working port.
Even if there isnt a port, I plan on keeping my evo until Sprint rolls out their LTE network and the new phones are out.

That is my plan also.
My plan as well. I am not the type that needs to get a new phone at the drop of a hat, but when LTE rolls out on Sprint, that will be my queue.

The only way I'll give my evo up is if they get any kind of towers up in my area beside the junk 3g service i get now. I'm just glad I can get wifi, in just about every inch of my town that is unsecured.
I'm keeping my EVO until i have the money to switch to AT&T for the Galaxy Nexus.
Sorry that you want to go to AT&T. Been there done that. And there is a reason why I am with Sprint now.
For the people waiting for the new phones, you wont get unlimited internet since you will have to change your plan.
And yes the EVO will get ICS. HTC may even release a version for it. They just have not committed to it yet. But don't get your hopes up.

I dunno what you experienced, but everyone around me in Dallas with AT&T is pulling 5mb+ on 3G. My buddy at A&M says he's pulled even faster speeds down there. Unlimited data doesn't mean squat at less than 150kbs.
Nope. Ill probably downgrade to a 3g only phone or even VirginMobile. I use like 600MB per month cuz im always on a wifi.
HTC Evo 4G | Deck AOSP 2.3.7 | Tiamat 4.0.5-sbc
Nope. I'd start working on the ICS build myself.
And even though this isn't the case, and CM9 is all but guaranteed to show up on the Evo (as it's in the top 3 devices they have users for, iirc), I'm still planning on helping out.

Source??
This is the only differentiator Sprint has and the only thing keeping me from heading to Verizon who has significantly better coverage in my area (even with my Airvana at home).
I don't see anything that says you lose unlimited internet for upgrading your phone and why would you need to change plans anyway??
Or are you saying Sprint isn't getting the new phones? or that you'll have to change plans when LTE rolls out?

Don't really care much for ICS but I will be keeping my Evo until Sprint releases a decent WP7 LTE capable phone. (if ever)

He is talking about if u jump from sprint to Verizon since they don't have unlimited nor does anyone else n no way to get it and if ur not going to use 2 gigs. does the speed matter? I know it helps with youtube vids or whatever but youtube lags n sucks even on cable or dsl. What ull be able to load web pages faster woo exciting.

Never happen.
CM9 or a good AOSP are our best bet. I've been giving the GS II 4G a long hard look, but a nice AOSP ICS build with 4G working would keep me happy for a while longer.
I'd dump Sense for ICS AOSP easy.
Hey, if ICS never get ported maybe we can hold out for Jelly Bean (j/k)
My EVO does everything I need it to do and I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade until sprint flips on the LTE switch in my area and pushes out a decent ICS/LTE phone. Of course by the time that happens Google will be prepping Marshmallow for release... I'm on wifi 99% of the day, though I can appreciate peeps agrivation with Sprint that do rely on mobile data. I suspect my EVO 4G will die with only about 5 minutes of Wi-Max use to it's credit. That makes me face a little.
Read today that the nexus 1 will not get an official release of ics due to hardware. Adreno 200 issues? I don't know. I'm sure there will be a port though.

Sprint bought out.

Hey everyone just saw the articles all over tech sites about softbanks majority takeover of Sprint Nextel and since this is the HTC EVO 4G OG section and most (certainly not all) are currently or have in the past Been with Sprint, I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the issue. Good move? Why? Bad move why? Will it help bring Sprint life? Future of Simply Everything plans? Talk it up just keep it civil and friendly.

Pretty sure this thread belongs elsewhere. Here is a link to the story. Doesn't sound as though the deal is done, as you implied.

There's a newer article out. Reporting it is indeed finished and should be announced today. I'll find the link. But apologies if this doesn't belong I see much more "off topic threads" here Luke I want a GS3 blah blah figure this is somewhat on topic. As the OG EVO WAS a Sprint exclusive and so at one point every EVO was configured or running on Sprint. While I'm sure many of them (me for one) are still on Sprint and this could have a large impact on people. Again if I violated anything a MOD can surely close this or move it to where it belongs.

I think this is a great thing for Sprint on the short term, kind of skeptical if it will be good for us consumers in the long run. I also find it somewhat sad that one company that has some sizeable debt, has just purchased a controlling share in another company with even greater debt, and I believe must of had to make this deal on credit.... Wish I could do that ****, dem bastards... :banghead:

Yea I'm leaning the same way after more looking into. Hopefully this can be the influx of cash Sprint needs to.build the new networks faster and start drawing more customers. I just hope they keep the simply everything plans. I think that's a big plus for them. If they can't use this to get going again then nothing will.

This^ Unlimited everything (besides land line calls) is amazing. Not to mention their plans are cheaper. The only thing left, IMO, to get more people to move over is to get more 4g coverage. I know they are expanding more...and I just heard I'm getting 4g by me which I didn't think would come for a few more years so that's a plus for me
As long as this buy out doesn't run Sprint into the ground, then it should be a good thing.

Agreed most people agree the up front cash will allow them to build out the LTE network faster. Which is good. Hopefully the broader the 4G range 3g speeds will improve as well since less traffic.

Not 'finished'....
BTW, this is LONG from 'finished', this is just the announcement of the agreement... there's still a LONG due diligence period that is only now starting along with required regulatory reviews. I doubt this will be 'finished' until 2nd quarter 2013, if not later.

You get what you pay for. Sprint's 4G is lacking and so is their 3G speeds. Getting consistent performance is out of question. Yeah the data is unlimited but that's it. Verizon has family share plans for $40/phone and shared data starting at $50/month. You could spend anywhere from $15-35 a month depending upon your data usage but Verizon at least in Los Angeles is worth every penny. Sprint will be nowhere near that kind of coverage for the next couple of years and I am tired of signing contracts based on promises of better data.

Yeah what-ever, I'm pulling on average 17-20MB/sec down on 4G and no less than 1.5 on 3G. Verizon locks down bootloaders worse than Sprint has ever contemplated, and just wait till you go a few gigs over your "allowance" and get hit with the 2-3 hundred dollar overage. Everyone I know on Verizon complains, but to each his own.

I read on Engadget today that Sprint bought like 50.8% of Clearwire. I wonder if our how that affects this deal
I hope that by buying half of clearwire, it improves 3g speeds.

Whatever works for you man. I guess Sprint has Independence covered like a blanket I guess. BTW, each phone on the shared plan with Verizon gives you a good idea where you stand on data. If you feel you're about to go over, you can go to the next level.
I've been with Sprint for a long time and really wish the 4G coverage was better but when you lose to metropcs in a major market then that is a problem.

I'm pretty sure Softbank wanted Sprint to be in control of clearwire as per the agreement. But like it was mentioned the Grand ole Government still has to give the ok for this so it'll be at least 6+ months.
I also have to side with Jamie here I had Verizon for a while (pre-smartphone days) and their service was great but lately as a huge Root fan I'd never go back. They are locking down the bootloaders on so many of the best devices like he SG3 and another one I'm forgetting but they have plans to lockdown more in the future. And while Sprint isn't the biggest Root supporter they at least leave that door unlocked. nd once they get the LTE network built out speeds WILL improve, we already have it here in Baltimore and my buddies Gnex is pulling a consistent 20-25mb/sec which for us Sprint users is Freaking a god send lol. Combine that will never having to worry about Data which I use about 5-7 gb/month I'm sticking right there with them. Until they are a huge success or die off lol

Cool story! I dropped sprint strictly because coverage in my area was very spotty. I have no regrets about it and if they fixed the network I'd go back in a heart beat...I just got tired of hearing about how my market was always next in line...blah blah blah. I also have no issue with verizon. The phone I picked was easily unlocked... that is more research based..all carriers should have a Google phone that can be unlocked. Data is not an issue...WiFi is every where anyways...even at the gym. I pay just as much now as I did with sprint... but dont drop calls...and since I am military and have a wife at home with my kids...an on demand call is a must. I also know Verizon has the better freq. Band... sure in the higher MHz you will get faster speeds..but the coverage area isn't as big...its all give and take. I am rooting for sprint...but just got tired of waiting....I love capitalism and choice...so I switched to who I feel deserved my money!

All very good reasons to switch. Yea I'd rank Verizon over ATT&t but the those locked bootloaders. I havent checking in a while but the locked sgs3 was a huge ordeal being locked. That kinda thing makes me mad. It's OUR Devices not the carriers and if I want to root then I have that right.
