I have had a few 03 Evos, but just got my first 0004.
a few observations about 0004:
-battery lasts longer, even with stock and full bloatware installed. The first charge lasted 24 hours with a lot of web browsing! (my first few charges with the 0003 was getting maybe 6 hours.)
-I let the charge go dead, and fully recharging took around 1 hour! This is perhaps 3-4x faster than my 0003 handset takes to charge.
-The screen seems to be higher contrast, though this might be my imagination since i do not have the two in front of me for a direct comparison.
I disagree. My wife has 004 and battery life/charge is the same. As far as the screen, It does go brighter at max but colors are not as warm. Contrast is not as good. And I hate that it doesn't fade.
Power and volume buttons are taller as well. Which makes it easier to accidentally unlock it in your pocket.
The only thing "not" better about 003 is the issue with the gingerbread sense Roms which I'm sure will be fixed by time official update is out.

I wonder if all 0004s have the same screen.
idc, how long do yours take to completely charge?
Also to accidentally unlock it you would have to push the button and slide the screen...I have not heard of this as an issue.
Not all 0004 evos have the nova screen ( 2 different panels), I've seen a few epsons. The nova panels have the brightness issues with GB leaked roms not 0003(Epson). The other evo is my household is white 0003 Epson screen and my whites look whiter while 0003 whites look pinkish or yellowish at times. I feel like overall my 0004 nova has way better color than the Epson panel; epsons just looks dull to me.

Is there way to tell which panel is present without going into the boot screen?

Buttons seem firmer. Camera seems diffrent for some reason dunno.
I would make sure there isn't any cocaine stuck on the motherboard. Sounds like your evo is on crack.

I was wondering, after rooting did anyone lose functionality with their camera...
I seem to notice that it won't focus on multiple faces now and won't get as detailed in the shot as the first day I had it.

I had these issues directly after rooting using Simple root

Ok, I just recived my second Incredible replacement after the first on had a light red to the white balance verses my original. This second has the same. I notice the contrst is a touch less then the original and the black doesnt seem quire as dark at time when compairing. Also one positive is that it seems a little brighter also thatn the original that I know us amoled. How can I tell if they switched to the Sony super tft display? Its not a huge deal just disapointing after getting used to the amoled. I personaly like that displays color balance better. Just want to knoe why these screens are different.

Im not positive how to tell if its changed or not but I do know that they did get rid of the AMOLED because of the shortages.
From what was announced only the nexus one and desire ee changed to slcd not the incredible.
My gf got a new replacement and hers has a purpleish tint to it when the brightness is low. A lot more noticeable then my phone. Looks like AMOLED though. The blacks are black.

HTC has publicly stated quite the opposite. The N1 and Desire switched to SLCD, but they have no immediate plans to switch the Incredible due to the change in the aforementioned two handsets alleviating the shortage.
htc was originally gonna switch incredible to SLCD, they never stated they WERENT gonna switch it due to affirmed Nexus and Desire switch though.

Really in the end it doesnt matter because they need to drop the amoled screens and just go with the samoled screens
There is definetly a difference between my original and these 2 replacments. I still have the original incredible in hand to compair with the second replacment.

Look closely at the pixels for the pentile arrangement, if the edges of straight lines look like dotted lines, its still AMOLED. A good place to see it is to pull down the notification shade, and look at the edge of the O where it says Ongoing, with the pentile matrix on the AMOLED screen you can tell the O is jagged and not smooth.
Was wondering this too, my little brother just got an incredible and it looks fine in sunlight like my evo when they are both at full brightness. I also noticed that like the evo, on HTC.com the type of screen is not listed, just says touch sensitive display. Just last week it said amoled. He just got the phone this past Wednesday, the hardware version is 002.
After many phonecalls and internet research I found out they did change the screen to slcd. The sku with vw2 notes this. The amoled defintly has a better color balance but if you did know this you might not notice. Shame I think I am sticking with my original even thought the switch can be flakey at times.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
002 is the normal amoled. BTW, VZW got a froyo build that listed "LCD support" in the change logs, so they are at least preparing for the switch in case it ever does come.

I'm on 3rd (hope last) inc due to warranty issues. Second was brand new, but had to wait due to backorder in June.
This latest one was a refurb, but looks and acts like a new one. I had some initial concerns, though. Just like the earlier poster, this has a purplish tint on the grays when using a setting dimmer than about 50%. I may not have noticed it if I hadn't had the other ones first. It's noticeable, but something I can live with. In any case, the display is crisp and clear, and the effect goes away as the brightness is turned up.
Awesome phone; even better thanks to XDA forums.

Too bad Samsung is holding those internally for up to a year in their own phones. By the time they release SAMOLED screens to other companies they've probably got something better already.
I don't worry about AMOLED vs sLCD because I got one of the engineering prototypes with AMOP technology (Active-Matrix Organic Plasma). Makes the production-run screens look like etch-a-sketch by comparison!
I'll be skruud if I ever brick it tho
so i got my new evo 4g yesterday but this one has a purple tint and is driving me nutz its a Nova 003 my first evo was a Epson 003 but had alot of problems so i got sprint to send me another phone and now im sending my old one back .. my question is should i call them back and go crazy about the purple tint or just be happy that i was able to get a replacement with no cost and only took 3 days?
Be happy you got a replacement that fast.
I currently have 5 EVO's (2 replacements) 1 for myself and 1 for my wife.
All but 1 are Nova screens. The last replacement that came in yesterday is an Epson. I immediately noticed the difference.
As many of the people that have had both a nova and epson screens in hand, the Nova may be pushing purple a little bit more but the Epson's contrast and overall brightness is lacking comparing ot to the Nova. The Nova's look much more vivid to me where as the Epson looks washed out. This tested with all devices on max brightness.
Even with the purple hue, I'd choose a Nova over an Epson all day long.
So I am left in the same situation as you except I want a good working Nova instead of this inferior washed out contrastless Epson!

Not sure if you are running any roms, but CM6 has a few options that change the color, aka "calibrate" (a stretch of words to be sure). It may take the edge off the purple tint.

Correct I prefer the Nova panels over Epson. I think most would agree.
got my replacement evo yesterday. came with 2.2 and is 0002 Novatec
After some reading, looks like the only way to tell which screen (without having 2 evo's with different screens in front of you) is to adjust brightness and gauge from there? If fast adjustment then epson, if gradual then nova?

Exactly. or use dmesg via adb and search for epson or nova
Ok, so today I received a new evo. I knew it would be 003 and probably have an epson screen. well it was and it did. I was bummed because I like my nova screen anyways, I thought well I'll switch em! turns out, the ribbon cables are completely different between the two. although there are still 3 for epson, the bottom one is dramatically bigger.
After noticing this I got a little more curious about the differences. one major'ish one, is you know those little gold round things that are kinda like a tiny dish with the black inside? (I have no idea what they are called) well they changed the type of those and there is one missing on 003. on 002 there was one connected to the wifi/fm chip, well that one is gone now. (its located right above the rumble motor)
Not much info but this is what I noticed. feel free to embellish. here are some pictures
I'm sure this has been discussed at length, but what's the difference between the 002 screen and the epson screen?
My replacement that I just got has an Epson screen and I hate it. I want my Nova back! Both were 003 though.
Epson has a truer black but novahas more Colors and is more vibrant. I miss my nova aswell, epson looks like an old tv lol

1. Connect PC to Evo in charge/development mode; then adb shell dmesg > evoinfo.txt. Look for "novatec" or "epson" in the txt file
or
2. Download terminal emulator from market, type dmesg, find "novatec" or epson" in the output
or
3. Add HTC Power Widget, change the screen brightness. Instant change = Epson, gradual/fading change = Novatec

That's what some people say but I put the two side by side and my nova was blacker, brighter and way more vibrant. It was better in every regard. My new phone is snappier though, and performs better than my last one ever did so I think it's a fair trade off. I'll get used to this screen.... eventually.

HW Revision and screen manufacture have been discussed at length during the first few weeks after launch.
Here are some facts....
1. All 002 Devices are Novatec
2. 003 Devices can be Novatec or Epson.
3. 003 Nova/Epson > 002 Nova. 002 Nova just doesn't look at as nice and some units suffer from manufacturing issues.
4. 003 Nova has much deeper colors than 003 Epson. If you ever looked a Galaxy S, its AMOLED looks like a glossy candied apple when compared to Evo's display. Nova makes Epson looks this way.
5. 003 Epson can produce truer black, while most 003 Nova generates a dark purple black.
It took me about a day to get used to my new 003/Epson.
I miss the gradual brightness level transitions most, the color differences don't bother me. My gf's Nova does look more vibrant but looking at them side by side I think the warmer tone on the Epson is slightly easier on the eyes
thanks for the info
Just figured out that i have 003/Novatec. Wasnt able to appreciate the colors until i took the anti-glare screen protector off. Boy was there a difference.
Color is very vibrant. Ill have to check another Evo and see what that screen is.
Yeah the ati-glare makes it suck.

For those who hate the purple tint on Nova displays: CM6 comes preloaded with a color calibrating app. I used it and although gauging with your eyes isn't perfect, I got it to look reasonably calibrated. Looks near perfect now.
I think you might be able to load the app on a Sense ROM but I'm not sure if there are dependencies. Search through the Nexus One forums for it.

Are you dissatisfied with the screen? If its not bothering you, then exchanging for a different one seems like a waste of time.

Care to add some more info as to why epson sucks so much?
It is incredibly washed out compared to both of the novas. The whites are kind of yellow, and the blacks aren't nearly as deep. It is a lot duller all across the spectrum. Also, for some reason it seems that the dithering is more noticeable on the epson, though that could just be me being nitpicky. When I first got it, as soon as I turned it on my heart sank and I was extremely disappointed. Side by side with the nova it looked like a joke. I have gotten used to it now but man I miss my last one. Also, neither of my novas had the purple problem, both had a nice deep black to them.
It's all a matter of personal preference.
Let me give my own personal experience with BOTH screens...
I have owned both novatech and epson equipped EVO's. Here's my opinion on the matter. First things first, OP keep your 0004 novatech EVO! It's very rare and a very good combo to have.
My experience is this: My very first brand new EVO was a 0003 with a Novatech. I never thought anything was wrong with it's screen whatsoever and my wife's EVO is exactly the same with a novatech. Last month I had to do a warranty exchange due to constant random reboots and my replacement was a brand new 0004 EVO in the original tv dinner box. As soon as I booted it up for the first time in the store I noticed right away the screen just didn't look right so I fired up my first EVO and put them side by side. To my suprise the difference is VERY noticable.
My first impressions and complaint about the new screen was that it looked "dull" and less vibrant. Also the whites where not as bright. I was hesitant at first to leave the store with the new EVO because I didn't think I was going to be able to get used to the "dull" whites on the new phone. But I had no choice because my original EVO had terrible reboots and was beyond usable.
So once I got home and used the new epson 0004 EVO, I slowly got used to it and was perfectly fine with it. After using the new phone for a couple of days it actually seemed normal and at that time I got my wife's 0003 Novetech EVO and compared them side by side. Right away I saw that her EVO had a pinkish/purplish tint to it compared to my new EVO, especially when viewing it at an angle or from across the table. After comparing them for a few minutes I quickly realized that my new epson screen actually had more accurate colors than my wife's novatech. So I shrugged it off and used my epson for several weeks with no complaints or concerns about the differences. I can honestly say that it's all a matter of user preference and neither screen is better or worse in the grand scheme of things.
But just a few days ago I had to exchange my epson EVO again due to technical problems and a bad antenna. Low and behold when I went to the Sprint store to pick up my new EVO it was another 0003 novatech. I knew immediately when I booted it up because I'm very familiar with both screens now. I was hesitant at first to accept the new novatech phone but quicky came to the reality that it is just as good as the epson and I remembered it has a brighter screen with brighter whites which is fine by me. The pinkish'purplish tint is not noticable once you take the phone and start using it. It's only noticable if you put both novatech and epson side by side. You will quickly adapt to either screen just fine. ...The same way you get used to other peoples LCD TV's with slightly different color temps. It's no different, trust me. I'm VERY picky and if I can adapt then so can anybody else.
The only other significant differece between the two screens is the way they change brightness levels and the dimming. The novatech has a very smooth transission when adjusting screen brightness while the epson screen uses step by step increments. Also the epson screen does not have a gradual dim when the screen goes to sleep, it is instant on and instant off. Personally I prefer the novatech's gradual smooth screen dimming and brightness adjustment over the epson. To some of you it may not matter, to others it might be the big deciding factor. Both screens work fine and I will settle for either one if I ever have to do another warranty exchange or insurance replacement.
I hope my opinions on this was helpful for those of you still wondering which screen is best suited for you.
EDIT: you can adjust the color temperatures of both screens by flashing "calibrated-signed-42-Universal.zip" and then installing the .apk called "Calibrator-5.1-Universal.apk. Just such here in the EVO forums, I think it's in the general thread. Works most excellent on my novatech!
How could I check which screen my evo has? I know its a 0004 for sure I got it after Xmas.

I think tx_dbs_tx sums it up nicely, I have a novatech but know a couple of people with epsons and it's really just preference. You can always adjust the colors if it looks too purple for you.
Anyone but me have this problem?
Haven't checked... and not going to do either.... as it's a non issue in normal usage (i'm seldom staring at a completely white screen just to see that the status bar area has aged the screen differently) and a "feature" of amoled technology
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
It's there on most colors! I took white cause it is easier to see on a photo but it is there all the time! I'm not retarded!
And the worst part is that the little part that is whiter is the only part that is really sharp like it used to be, while the rest of the screen never is really white and sharp but instead has an uneven yellowish color. And it is worse than I could capture on photo.
I love my phone im not trying to mock it.
I'm not even gonna check
Because if I do, I'll notice it every single time I use the phone, and it'll annoy me to death.
If you don't see it you don't have it. It's there all the time. Of course it's only in games or reading stuff that is full screen. But anything except the black status bar!
Ditto problem.

I noticed it just days before you made the post, interesting timing.
Hi All,
came across this thread when looking for a solution for SGS1.
it seems that Burn in is indeed a problem for AMOLED screens.
in my situation, I've found a burn cause by Waze (of course, any app that would leave the screen on would cause it).
sadly enough, my phone is only 6 months old and I use Waze ~30 min. a day - not much for a burn you think? wrong!
for now, I've set Waze to hide the point bar and the zoom control, but still many objects on the screen are static - including the notification bar.
does anyone has a good solution?
Same problem!
But in reality it is not a real problem..
AMOLED is still not ready for prime time, but at least Samsung is trying to improve on it with every iteration. Can't wait for 40"+ AMOLED HD TVs.
Before waranty goes off demand to change display..

Mine was delivered in may w/ 2.3.3, since I'm on a 2.3.5 based rom, I got better colors / sharpness and less side effects (greenish tint)
Maybe Samsung changed the way how to control the display? (hardware drivers)
just my 2 cents..
Yes
Just changed the screen last month
Now its ok
Dunno if it will be burned again
Also dunno what caused it

Irrelevant. It's an AMOLED hardware-related thing, nothing to do with software. My screen has burn-in, your screen has/will, every screen does/will.
When somebody says their screen has none they just don't see it. Because really, all our phones one day or later will show it.
I don't use any apps that ever hide the status bar so even if I did have it, it wouldn't bother me.

My notification area is a bit darker than the rest of my screen. It's only visible when screen is white, and I can't identify any leftovers from any icons like the battery or Wifi icon.
My SGS2 is about ½ year old, and in daily use it's no problem at all, but I wonder how it will look when my SGS2 is 1 or 2 years old
