Incredible Screen type changed? - Droid Incredible General

Ok, I just recived my second Incredible replacement after the first on had a light red to the white balance verses my original. This second has the same. I notice the contrst is a touch less then the original and the black doesnt seem quire as dark at time when compairing. Also one positive is that it seems a little brighter also thatn the original that I know us amoled. How can I tell if they switched to the Sony super tft display? Its not a huge deal just disapointing after getting used to the amoled. I personaly like that displays color balance better. Just want to knoe why these screens are different.

Im not positive how to tell if its changed or not but I do know that they did get rid of the AMOLED because of the shortages.

From what was announced only the nexus one and desire ee changed to slcd not the incredible.

My gf got a new replacement and hers has a purpleish tint to it when the brightness is low. A lot more noticeable then my phone. Looks like AMOLED though. The blacks are black.

HTC has publicly stated quite the opposite. The N1 and Desire switched to SLCD, but they have no immediate plans to switch the Incredible due to the change in the aforementioned two handsets alleviating the shortage.

htc was originally gonna switch incredible to SLCD, they never stated they WERENT gonna switch it due to affirmed Nexus and Desire switch though.

Really in the end it doesnt matter because they need to drop the amoled screens and just go with the samoled screens

There is definetly a difference between my original and these 2 replacments. I still have the original incredible in hand to compair with the second replacment.

Look closely at the pixels for the pentile arrangement, if the edges of straight lines look like dotted lines, its still AMOLED. A good place to see it is to pull down the notification shade, and look at the edge of the O where it says Ongoing, with the pentile matrix on the AMOLED screen you can tell the O is jagged and not smooth.

Was wondering this too, my little brother just got an incredible and it looks fine in sunlight like my evo when they are both at full brightness. I also noticed that like the evo, on HTC.com the type of screen is not listed, just says touch sensitive display. Just last week it said amoled. He just got the phone this past Wednesday, the hardware version is 002.

After many phonecalls and internet research I found out they did change the screen to slcd. The sku with vw2 notes this. The amoled defintly has a better color balance but if you did know this you might not notice. Shame I think I am sticking with my original even thought the switch can be flakey at times.

002 is the normal amoled. BTW, VZW got a froyo build that listed "LCD support" in the change logs, so they are at least preparing for the switch in case it ever does come.

I'm on 3rd (hope last) inc due to warranty issues. Second was brand new, but had to wait due to backorder in June.
This latest one was a refurb, but looks and acts like a new one. I had some initial concerns, though. Just like the earlier poster, this has a purplish tint on the grays when using a setting dimmer than about 50%. I may not have noticed it if I hadn't had the other ones first. It's noticeable, but something I can live with. In any case, the display is crisp and clear, and the effect goes away as the brightness is turned up.
Awesome phone; even better thanks to XDA forums.

Too bad Samsung is holding those internally for up to a year in their own phones. By the time they release SAMOLED screens to other companies they've probably got something better already.

I don't worry about AMOLED vs sLCD because I got one of the engineering prototypes with AMOP technology (Active-Matrix Organic Plasma). Makes the production-run screens look like etch-a-sketch by comparison!
I'll be skruud if I ever brick it tho

AMOLED vs LCD?

So apparently the "Samsung AMOLED" screens are being phased out because they cannot keep up with demand and they are replacing it with the "Sony Super TFT LCD" screen. I just ordered my incredible today and should get it in about a month
Am I getting ripped off with this other screen or is it still worth it? The only review I saw said the LCD is usually better in the sun, but worse on the battery. Not sure if resolution and clarity are the same. Probably won't get a good answer until the LCD Incs are out.
HTC isnt going to take a chance on the phone being less than "Incredible". You're not going to notice a difference unless you have another Incredible on hand to compare it to. Think of it as driving your own car, you'll never know that your buddies car is better than yours (stock) because it came with goodyear tires instead of michelins (or vice versa). The fact is that you're going to love the phone and you're going to love it even more when you can fully root and mod it to your hearts content. The whole screen "thing" is overblown media hype. I have a Droid and a dInc and to be honest the screens are beautiful on both and while the dInc has sharper, crisper colors unless I hold them side by side I always find myself toying with my wife's Droid because I love the battery life more.
Just remember to fully charge your dInc for four hours PRIOR to activating your phone or powering it on. So you can have 16 hours of use time (standby/talk mixed) as I was charging my phone three times a day for a little while.
They should just replace it with the Super AMOLED Display. I would rebuy an incredible for that.

+1 good sir
if the new sony display is superior to the current samsung amoled one, HTC should let us send ours back to have it replaced either for free as part of the warranty or a small fee for the replacement, I would definately have mine replaced if I was given the option. ( assuming that the new sony display is better of course) I love the colors on the amoled screen but hate not being able to see the display in sunlight unless I turn the backlight all the way up.
from my understanding the shortage on AMOLED displays is bc samsung is being greedy with them for their own phones. doubt they will give the better screens to HTC if this is true.
assuming htc can fix the underlying problems with the amoled version (grounding, charging, etc), you might want to hold on to your version very tightly.

Absolutely not. There are using the lesser Sony screens because they cant get the Samsung AMOLED screens fast enough, NOT because the Sony ones are better.

I take my Incredible and its AMOLED screen with me on 4-wheeler rides 3-4 times a week and I can see the screen perfectly fine in direct sunlight. Is it as bright and visible as my Motorola Droid was? NO, but still very much usable.
Then combine that with the fact that the majority of my usage is indoors, as I would guess is the average users, then AMOLED is the clear winner. IMO
Different strokes for different folks.
I will take the AMOLED FTW since I use it indoors 95% of the time. It really is hard to make out in direct sunlight but I deal with it since it is so beautiful indoors.
Agree, amoled is amazing looking indoors, but either way I would still take this phone with or with out it.

boot into bootloader and look at the build date, chances are you got an early build with the amoled screen, I am not even sure they started shipping the new ones yet, but I could be wrong. also if you bring it outside in bright sunlight and it gets hard to see then it is amoled. lcd is pretty easy to see in bright sunlight.

NEXUS S - SLCD from carphonewarehouse

Just picked up a new nexus s (new years eve) from carphonewarehouse in brighton and it has an SLCD. Is this common in uk as i thought it was just happening in russia etc..????
I have an AMOLED Desire so i can see a massive difference and about to return it. Any benefit in SLCD???

Look at it.
The major difference is when looking at the image with black background.
As SAMOLED has unlimited contrast, black is totally black.
only the russian nexus s models have slcd. can't find the link to the article, but I remember reading about this.
edit : here's the article http://androidcommunity.com/nexus-s...d-in-russia-instead-of-super-amoled-20101207/
OMG!!!!!!!! noooooooo, i hate it when the manufacture process changes half way through the release of a product (example HTC Desire)
i'm glad our batch in USA has SAMOLED.... but what will happen after if we need to send in our for repair? are we going to lose the SAMOLED to be replaced with a Sony LCD ? like they did with the Desire?
ewww....
i think i'd rather go back to a Tmobile Vibrant if that ever happens
Well slcd has it benefits. First you get regular RGB pixels instead of ugly Pentile. Second LCD's are not prone to "burn in" and shioter life of amoled. There are toms of threads about samoled burn in and rapid dimness.

the only reason i purchased this phone and SGS was to get the SAMOLED screen
if it was not for it, there are tons of better choices for an Android phone
there is simply nothing else better that can compare to the crispy clear quality of the SAMOLED
and most importantly it works under bright sunlight

You think so?
They can't write Super AMOLED on the specs and sell a LCD, can you add some pictures of the screen?
I'd be surprised if you have a slcd screen! When the phone is off does your screen have a dark blue(ish) tinge to it? It does look different from a simple amoled screen, did some one tell you from carphone warehouse that it was scld?
This is very unlikely, surely?
As someone has said, the SAMOLED screen is one of the major selling points. If it didn't have it, I'd probably stick with my Desire HD!
It's almost like swapping in a 600mhz CPU and selling it.
Are you sure it is SLCD?
Do we have a really solid way to check this?
Probably by using image with different shades of black? Then turn the contrast to max or something.
Post comparison photo with your HTC Desire please ...

Nexus S super amoled display Vs Vibrant

I have both the Nexus S and a Vibrant. I must say that the Nexus S super amoled display looks better then the Vibrant super amoled display and, it's not the brightness. I turned the Nexus S screen to the lowest setting and, I turned the Vibrant to the highest setting as a result the Nexus S screen looks alot better. What's you all thoughts on this?...please don't say that the vibrant is a defective product because, this will be my 4'th Vibrant do to this...thanks.

Every SAMOLED screen has its own characteristics, there are no two SAMOLED screens that are identical, they just have to fall between an upper and lower specification

I think that a newer display should come with a change log...lol but, trust me the Nexus S display is indeed a different better screen. I thought that a LCD was a LCD Super Amoled was a Super Amoled, just a different resolution and, size. It would be nice to let a customer know what they are buying. Thanks.

I've noticed this as well... that is of you didn't get one with the ugly yellow/grey tint screen. I'm on my 6th sns and this one has the best amoled screen I've ever seen. I went through a few vibrants and ended up with a pretty nice one there too but there's no comparison with the particular nexus s. It even looks better than my buddy's fascinate which has a better screen than any vibrant I've seen or owned. Whites on this phone are awesome and very neutral with barely any tint at all. Even at its lowest brightness setting I don't have any purple or pink on the status bar pull down. Even on my phones that didn't have this exact quality screen still were great looking amoleds.

I switched from the Sprint Epic to the Nexus S and i have to agree, my epics screen just didn't look as good as the nexus one did. On the epic i would normally set the brightness to halfway and it looked decent but on my nexus i leave it on auto and regardless of where i am it looks amazing. I don't know why but it does look better
So I take it, Super Amoled's are not all the same. I think they don't tell us this because of business reasons. Besides, I think it would be cool to know the name of my Nexus S screen cause I know for a fact the Nexus S has the best Amoled display out there.

My guess is that they use the same basic technology but given the time between release dates some new parts or processes may have gone into the making of the Nexus S screens. The Nexus S definitely has a Super Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (SAMOLED) but just looks slightly better. Heck it might even be due to the Contour Display (as it is called), who knows?

SLCD vs AMOLED

I have an amoled incredible that I picked up a few weeks ago, and I love the screen, but it's so hard to see in daylight. I understand that "super" lcd screens have a layer of glass removed, which would mean that the screen is closer to the top, which should make it easier to see in sun light. Is this true?
Anyone have pics of both screens? I got my incredible for an excellent price, so if the SLCD is better I can easily sell the incredible on ebay and purchase an SLCD one.
Hmmm...I haven't heard that the S-LCD screens had a layer of glass removed. I knew the Super AMOLED ones did, but I hadn't heard about that for the LCD version. I guess someone with more knowledge will have to respond. That'd be interesting though.
I thought that's what the "super" in amoled or lcd meant...layer of glass removed.
which one is better?
I have seen both and it really isn't that big of a difference. It only makes it about 10% better, still very hard to see in sunlight.
I have the AMOLED version (bought December 2010) and I have no issues what so ever seeing my screen no matter what lighting. Could be me or how I set my screen brightness, but I'm not using any screen protectors or anything. Just my $.02

Yeah I've read plenty of small text perfectly fine and never noticed any blurriness. I have an AMOLED, and same goes for images and video's, as long as they're actually high quality then they're crystal clear- so can't complain.
The differences must be really subtle. My bootscreen is completely black, and in the dark it really is black and not an off-grayish black that I see on most other screens on phones that I've had.
The differences are so small, they are really close in comparison.
I have a lot of trouble with glare when out in the sunlight with my AMOLED, I usually just keep brightness at 40% and block the light with my hand. Otherwise, i dont really check my phone when in the sun because it's too much of a hassle
I had an AMOLED Nexus One and now have an SLCD Incredible. I often had trouble seeing the Nexus in the sun but can't recall that happening with the Incredible. I'd say there's a definite difference.
the difference is huge. no offense, but your opinion isn't worth much if you haven't had both screens.
i had the amoled screen from may 2010 to february 2011 and then got an slcd replacement device and instantly saw the difference. when i first look at the phone i saw a 'crispness' that wasn't there before. it took me about 15 minutes to realize it was because the phone was slcd not amoled. To be honest, I'm really glad i was sent an SLCD because i love it now. The screen is SOO clear. I typically use my phone for internet and social networks rather than for watching movies so an SLCD benefits me in those ways.
depending on how u use your phone will most likely decide if you like an amoled vs an slcd

yeah its definitely opinion lol (i dont mean to say anyone's wrong hah, just saying that everyone sees things differently), because i look at my screen and go 'wow thats clear!' i dont really see a hugee difference with the colors besides the blacks
Colors can be a matter of preference, but I don't think there's any debating sunlight brightness. Some may not be bothered much by AMOLED's washout in direct sunlight (perhaps you live in the Pacific NW or you never go outside), but that doesn't change the fact that SLCD is actually brighter in those conditions.
Another variable I don't see mentioned enough in these AMOLED vs SLCD discussions is that of compatibility. For the average person on the street, it's a non-issue, but for those of us who love to tweak our phones, the AMOLED is an easier version of the Inc to own. Most mods are compatible between both, but there have been recovery versions, kernels, and other things that have only worked on AMOLED Incs.
Is it a deal-breaker? Probably not. Someone usually comes along with an SLCD fix for these mods later... but I'm just throwing it out there as something to consider. If you flash a lot of stuff, AMOLED just makes life easier.

This was mentioned in the last thread like this. I and several others said we have never run into something that wouldn't work on SLCD. I've flashed nearly every ROM and most kernels here. The only time I had to do something different was flash a SLCD-compatible recovery, which took about 2 minutes to figure out and I haven't touched it since.

Sure - it only took you 2 minutes to figure out because someone had already figured it out. The early adopters were pretty distressed when they only got a black screen though.
Like I said - not a deal-breaker, and if you're patient then someone will come up with a SLCD-compatible version of the item in question. But it comes and goes. There were certain versions of 2.x recovery that didn't work on SLCD... then the community figured it out and everything was copacetic. Then there were certain versions of 3.x that had problems on SLCD... so it's not as if these issues just go away forever once someone figures them out.
I'm just saying the only thing that required a special flash was the recovery. All roms and kernels have been fine.
No kernel issues related to SLCD?
Like I said, these problems are usually found and sorted out fairly quickly. The fact remains that there are intermittent compatibility issues that require devs to tweak their work to support SLCD.
Ok so if you're bleeding edge then sure, AMOLED will reduce issues. I just don't think anyone should feel an SLCD is going to hold them back from the development scene. As an Android junkie going back to the G1 days, my SLCD Incredible hasn't held me back one bit.
I love my AMOLED. I play lots of old school emulated games on my phone when I'm on the go and they look absolutely gorgeous with the wide spectrum of colors. Plus, AMOLED screens are akin to tube televisions with an interlacing effect, which while it does make text harder to read it also helps mask the low res imperfections of these older games.
Samsung seems to have fixed the issue though. We'll be seeing the best of both worlds soon.

super amoled display dwarfs every non amoled display existing.

People may say that out super amoled display is getting old and everything, but its only getting old compared to the super + varients and hd amoleds. so far i have not seen a smart phone capable of my vibrants supreme colors and deep blacks. dont forget viewing angles. my cuzzin was all happy cuz she got a htc vivid n thought the screen was better than mine cuz it was bigger lol. then i showed her mine next to hers and she was like wtf? it doesnt look as white or bright lol. gosh, im never getting rid of the vibrant till the hd plus varients come out. forget lcd. its just outdated and a waste of time. nokia and samsung know that
HTC has used amoled before I don't see why they don't continue and Motorola has used it Led Tech is simple better plane an simple

The only thing I never liked was with the stock rom/kernel from when I first got my vibrant is missed calls and texts kept the screen lit, especially overnight, which in turn kind of burnt the notification bar and clock slightly into the screen that I notice on a white screen  no fix for that I assume?

I've compared them side by side and i personally think our phones have more of a yellowish tint that isn't so great.
