Got my replacement phone today :( - EVO 4G General

so i got my new evo 4g yesterday but this one has a purple tint and is driving me nutz its a Nova 003 my first evo was a Epson 003 but had alot of problems so i got sprint to send me another phone and now im sending my old one back .. my question is should i call them back and go crazy about the purple tint or just be happy that i was able to get a replacement with no cost and only took 3 days?

Be happy you got a replacement that fast.

I currently have 5 EVO's (2 replacements) 1 for myself and 1 for my wife.
All but 1 are Nova screens. The last replacement that came in yesterday is an Epson. I immediately noticed the difference.
As many of the people that have had both a nova and epson screens in hand, the Nova may be pushing purple a little bit more but the Epson's contrast and overall brightness is lacking comparing ot to the Nova. The Nova's look much more vivid to me where as the Epson looks washed out. This tested with all devices on max brightness.
Even with the purple hue, I'd choose a Nova over an Epson all day long.
So I am left in the same situation as you except I want a good working Nova instead of this inferior washed out contrastless Epson!

Not sure if you are running any roms, but CM6 has a few options that change the color, aka "calibrate" (a stretch of words to be sure). It may take the edge off the purple tint.

Not rooted came with 2.2

My EVO is due to arrive Tuesday - how do I tell which screen I have? I was playing with a coworker's EVO the other day and I noticed how bland/washed-out the colors were, so I'm assuming Epson on that one.

Correct I prefer the Nova panels over Epson. I think most would agree.

got my replacement evo yesterday. came with 2.2 and is 0002 Novatec

After some reading, looks like the only way to tell which screen (without having 2 evo's with different screens in front of you) is to adjust brightness and gauge from there? If fast adjustment then epson, if gradual then nova?

Exactly. or use dmesg via adb and search for epson or nova

Just got my 003 Evo!

Returned my 002 Evo to the horrible radioshack and went to bestbuy mobile and bought myself a new Evo.
Things I've noticed at first glance. The epson screen and the battery cover. The screen is noticeably much more vivid and brighter. The matte cover on the back has a great finish and feels like a Nintendo DSi. No more light leakage!!! Woot! And odd but the power button responds much smoother and feels a lot better when pressed down.
Also some info I got from the reps there were that Sprint is going to put out another update to fix the 30 fps limit. Great news and I played around with the black and white demo evo. It has a GLOSSY finish which totally turns the phone off to me, because of finger prints and it looks incredibly ugly in my opinion.
I checked the firmware on my evo and it's still 1.32.651.6! I can still root my phone!
DT10.06.17 is my build date.
This is the Evo I should've received during the launch date. This phone is incredible!
Edit: After playing with the phone today, the speaker is much louder & the call quality is much clearer and louder than my 002.
Yay for you.
I too am still on old version...but wonder how can we get to any new updates if they all locked like new OTA. Hope this only means (yay devs) that we just have to wait a little longer between updates to get new stuff.
That 30fps fix would be nice to see...but store reps lie like rugs. (Oh wait, did I say that outloud?)

I've seen this stated both ways on this message board. I think that it comes down to preference.
There's no way that the Epson screen is brighter than the Nova. Might yield more accurate colors, but out of the thousands of reports, the Nova is much brighter always. Are you sure you have an Epson screen? Not all 003s are Epson (as it's my case). I'll only believe it when I see pictures.

Epson: Better quality, not as bright.
Nova: Purple tent, brighter.
Or that's how I would put it.
Why are so many people thinking that if its 003 its Epson? I got a build date of Jun 16 and its Novatec. So they know the problem exist and they keep sending phones with Nova. I think there is something else involved in there.

Thank god I'm buddy's with the radio shack guy, he's getting me a new one even though I kinda don't even need one. So he will not update it if I ask him to not update it....I'm just not sure which screen I prefer. I love the Nova screen, I just can't imagine a screen looking much better. If the Epson isn't as bright that kinda sucks, though more accurate colors do sound good...and then there is the issue of the 30fps thing. The hack we have currently works out awesome on my Nova...I wouldn't want massive tearing, however if they do address the bug then it is a moot point.
Buuuut I don't think that they are ever going to. I might just turn down the new one and deal with my slight light leak and very very minor screen lifting. It hasn't gotten any worse in 2 weeks.
Hmm, decisions decisions....
There is that "fix" for screen separation that involves a hair dryer. I've been wanting to try it as people who have done it say it works. Plus people with N1's said they had the same problem and the hair dryer "fix" does the trick.
A quick way to tell which screen you have is with the "Power Control Widget" If you cycle through the brightness settings and it instantly changes you have a Epson, if it fades in and out for each change you have a Nova. At least that's what I have been reading in the forums.

Instant brightness change. I also compared it to my GF's launch day 002 and they are hugely different in screen colour/sharpness.
Hm true it's not as bright as the nova only difference is in direct sunlight, BUT the colors are much more vivid and yes I do have a epson. Tried the power control widget and my screen doesn't fade like it use to, it changes the difference in a split second. My build date for the phone is not bad either. DT10.06.17.

Hardware differences between 003 and 002

Ok, so today I received a new evo. I knew it would be 003 and probably have an epson screen. well it was and it did. I was bummed because I like my nova screen anyways, I thought well I'll switch em! turns out, the ribbon cables are completely different between the two. although there are still 3 for epson, the bottom one is dramatically bigger.
After noticing this I got a little more curious about the differences. one major'ish one, is you know those little gold round things that are kinda like a tiny dish with the black inside? (I have no idea what they are called) well they changed the type of those and there is one missing on 003. on 002 there was one connected to the wifi/fm chip, well that one is gone now. (its located right above the rumble motor)
Not much info but this is what I noticed. feel free to embellish. here are some pictures
I'm sure this has been discussed at length, but what's the difference between the 002 screen and the epson screen?
My replacement that I just got has an Epson screen and I hate it. I want my Nova back! Both were 003 though.
Epson has a truer black but novahas more Colors and is more vibrant. I miss my nova aswell, epson looks like an old tv lol

1. Connect PC to Evo in charge/development mode; then adb shell dmesg > evoinfo.txt. Look for "novatec" or "epson" in the txt file
or
2. Download terminal emulator from market, type dmesg, find "novatec" or epson" in the output
or
3. Add HTC Power Widget, change the screen brightness. Instant change = Epson, gradual/fading change = Novatec

That's what some people say but I put the two side by side and my nova was blacker, brighter and way more vibrant. It was better in every regard. My new phone is snappier though, and performs better than my last one ever did so I think it's a fair trade off. I'll get used to this screen.... eventually.

HW Revision and screen manufacture have been discussed at length during the first few weeks after launch.
Here are some facts....
1. All 002 Devices are Novatec
2. 003 Devices can be Novatec or Epson.
3. 003 Nova/Epson > 002 Nova. 002 Nova just doesn't look at as nice and some units suffer from manufacturing issues.
4. 003 Nova has much deeper colors than 003 Epson. If you ever looked a Galaxy S, its AMOLED looks like a glossy candied apple when compared to Evo's display. Nova makes Epson looks this way.
5. 003 Epson can produce truer black, while most 003 Nova generates a dark purple black.
It took me about a day to get used to my new 003/Epson.
I miss the gradual brightness level transitions most, the color differences don't bother me. My gf's Nova does look more vibrant but looking at them side by side I think the warmer tone on the Epson is slightly easier on the eyes
thanks for the info
Just figured out that i have 003/Novatec. Wasnt able to appreciate the colors until i took the anti-glare screen protector off. Boy was there a difference.
Color is very vibrant. Ill have to check another Evo and see what that screen is.
Yeah the ati-glare makes it suck.

For those who hate the purple tint on Nova displays: CM6 comes preloaded with a color calibrating app. I used it and although gauging with your eyes isn't perfect, I got it to look reasonably calibrated. Looks near perfect now.
I think you might be able to load the app on a Sense ROM but I'm not sure if there are dependencies. Search through the Nexus One forums for it.

Are you dissatisfied with the screen? If its not bothering you, then exchanging for a different one seems like a waste of time.

Care to add some more info as to why epson sucks so much?
It is incredibly washed out compared to both of the novas. The whites are kind of yellow, and the blacks aren't nearly as deep. It is a lot duller all across the spectrum. Also, for some reason it seems that the dithering is more noticeable on the epson, though that could just be me being nitpicky. When I first got it, as soon as I turned it on my heart sank and I was extremely disappointed. Side by side with the nova it looked like a joke. I have gotten used to it now but man I miss my last one. Also, neither of my novas had the purple problem, both had a nice deep black to them.
It's all a matter of personal preference.
Let me give my own personal experience with BOTH screens...
I have owned both novatech and epson equipped EVO's. Here's my opinion on the matter. First things first, OP keep your 0004 novatech EVO! It's very rare and a very good combo to have.
My experience is this: My very first brand new EVO was a 0003 with a Novatech. I never thought anything was wrong with it's screen whatsoever and my wife's EVO is exactly the same with a novatech. Last month I had to do a warranty exchange due to constant random reboots and my replacement was a brand new 0004 EVO in the original tv dinner box. As soon as I booted it up for the first time in the store I noticed right away the screen just didn't look right so I fired up my first EVO and put them side by side. To my suprise the difference is VERY noticable.
My first impressions and complaint about the new screen was that it looked "dull" and less vibrant. Also the whites where not as bright. I was hesitant at first to leave the store with the new EVO because I didn't think I was going to be able to get used to the "dull" whites on the new phone. But I had no choice because my original EVO had terrible reboots and was beyond usable.
So once I got home and used the new epson 0004 EVO, I slowly got used to it and was perfectly fine with it. After using the new phone for a couple of days it actually seemed normal and at that time I got my wife's 0003 Novetech EVO and compared them side by side. Right away I saw that her EVO had a pinkish/purplish tint to it compared to my new EVO, especially when viewing it at an angle or from across the table. After comparing them for a few minutes I quickly realized that my new epson screen actually had more accurate colors than my wife's novatech. So I shrugged it off and used my epson for several weeks with no complaints or concerns about the differences. I can honestly say that it's all a matter of user preference and neither screen is better or worse in the grand scheme of things.
But just a few days ago I had to exchange my epson EVO again due to technical problems and a bad antenna. Low and behold when I went to the Sprint store to pick up my new EVO it was another 0003 novatech. I knew immediately when I booted it up because I'm very familiar with both screens now. I was hesitant at first to accept the new novatech phone but quicky came to the reality that it is just as good as the epson and I remembered it has a brighter screen with brighter whites which is fine by me. The pinkish'purplish tint is not noticable once you take the phone and start using it. It's only noticable if you put both novatech and epson side by side. You will quickly adapt to either screen just fine. ...The same way you get used to other peoples LCD TV's with slightly different color temps. It's no different, trust me. I'm VERY picky and if I can adapt then so can anybody else.
The only other significant differece between the two screens is the way they change brightness levels and the dimming. The novatech has a very smooth transission when adjusting screen brightness while the epson screen uses step by step increments. Also the epson screen does not have a gradual dim when the screen goes to sleep, it is instant on and instant off. Personally I prefer the novatech's gradual smooth screen dimming and brightness adjustment over the epson. To some of you it may not matter, to others it might be the big deciding factor. Both screens work fine and I will settle for either one if I ever have to do another warranty exchange or insurance replacement.
I hope my opinions on this was helpful for those of you still wondering which screen is best suited for you.
EDIT: you can adjust the color temperatures of both screens by flashing "calibrated-signed-42-Universal.zip" and then installing the .apk called "Calibrator-5.1-Universal.apk. Just such here in the EVO forums, I think it's in the general thread. Works most excellent on my novatech!
How could I check which screen my evo has? I know its a 0004 for sure I got it after Xmas.

Great comparison review. Thanks!

Well I just wanted to know if there's was a difference on performance and display I just realized my WiFi won't connect stays on obtaining up address but never connects...
I think tx_dbs_tx sums it up nicely, I have a novatech but know a couple of people with epsons and it's really just preference. You can always adjust the colors if it looks too purple for you.

Bright Spot: Nova vs Epson

First off, this isn't a thread about which screen is better.
There are 2 different types of screens on the HTC Evo 4G. One is a Novatec and the other is an Epson. I want to know if one type of screen is more prone to the bright spot than the other. If you don't already know which screen you have, you can tell one of 2 ways:
Option 1: Open ADB Shell or Terminal Emulator and type the following:
dmesg |grep -i epson
dmesg |grep -i nova
One will come back with results and the other will come back blank. Whichever one has results, that's the screen you have.
Option 2: Change your brightness in settings. Epsons change brightness instantly while Novas fade.
What is a bright spot? On many Evos, a brighter spot will start to appear over time. It usually starts about 1 inch above the back button. It is most noticeable on a completely white screen.
So tell me, XDA, do you have an Evo with a Nova or an Epson and do you have a bright spot on your screen? Please answer via the poll before posting. Thanks!
I have a Nova with a small bright spot.
Nova screen, HW 002, original google IO conference phone, 2 bright spots, one over the b and a smaller one in the center.

Nova. Two bright spots.
Nova from June - no bright spots
Refurb Nova from October - huge, trailing bright spot
New 0004 Epson from December - no bright spots
I had a Nova from June and it had one bright spot. Now I have a replacement evo with a Nova and it has no bright spots. Both hardware version 0003.

Same. I absolutely hate it and it drives me nuts, so I got a Shift. Which is way quicker, somehow.
I've had 6 or 7 evo's. My very first one was a 002 Nova, and it had a huge bright spot. Since then, 2 of them have been epson's, the rest nova's. All have been perfect.
I'm on my 3rd screen because of the bright spot. Sprint keeps trying to tell me that it's normal and happens to all touchscreen phones including the iphone, even though NONE of the display EVO's have the spot.
So, does anyone have an Epson screen with the bright spots?
I have 003 hardware with a Novatec screen with no bright spots. Actually my third screen tho. First one had dust under the screen, 2nd one had a cracked bezel near the power button and they replaced the screen assembly.
Any correlation between overclocking the phone or heat in general with bright spots? Mine isnt/wasnt ever overclocked.
Luckily for me I have no bright spots. Launch Day EVO had none either, got it replaced in September. So far so good
0003 with nova and two bright spots
I've got an 0003 with a nova screen and two nasty bright spots. Are you guys having any luck with Sprint fixing these? I bought mine in October of last year, so I'm way outside the 30 days. I haven't tried yet but this has been aggravating me more and more recently. If you did take it in, did you go back to stock first? While root has nothing to do with it, I'm sure they'll want to argue the point.
0002 Nova here, I hadn't noticed it before, but I just looked and it looks more like an L, but yeah there's a bright spot there, there's also a smaller one like right above the Search button...
I'd be curious to know if sprint is replacing these as well...
003 nova from june had one. Got a refurb last month 004 nova almost in the same spot.
002 release day nova and my screen has one bright spot over the back button that is only visible when the stock splash screen is showing and the brightness is all the way up

Same here. Launch day 002 Nova.
Spot above back showed up very early, spot in middle took a couple of months. Both have gotten a little worse as time goes by.
Didn't take it in a while back when we didn't have root for one of the updates, and now the 004 hardware is out, and doesn't work with a lot of stuff. Kinda drives me nuts, but not as much as fighting with 004 hardware

So I took mine by the Sprint "repair center" tonight. They said since I didn't have total equipment protection they would have to charge me for the new screen, it was $35 which isn't a big deal so I said sure.
Unfortunately they didn't have any new screens. They had one that was on a phone they were sending back and the guy said he'd give it to me, but did point out a scuff on the bezel. He said that he'd be happy to put a new one on it when they got one but I could have that one for free. I decided to take him up on it. To me a scuff on the bezel is no where near as annoying as the bright spots on my screen.
So...he takes my phone apart and puts the new screen on. Powers it up and sends me on my way once it's booted. It was at the point I got into the car and tried to unlock it that I realized the touch screen didn't work. Went back in, he takes my phone apart again. Apparently a ribbon cable on the inside wasn't connected right. He hooked it up and booted my phone (without the SD card in) and the touch screen worked. Unfortunately when it booted something was clearly not right, probably because the SD card wasn't in. My launcher was sense instead of launcher pro and my wallpaper had been set to one I used a while back. No biggie I thought, I'll just restore my nandroid backup from yesterday. So I go home, and then realize when I get into recovery to restore that my volume rocker doesn't work. SNAP. Back to the Sprint store. The guy at the store then informed me that it appears that the actually buttons on the board are broken and it's not the rocker switch at all.
So...my phone went down in the computer as having a "known issue" and now I'll be receiving a free replacement. Unfortunately that probably won't happen for a couple days or possibly until Monday. What really stinks about the whole mess is somehow I don't even have the Android market on my phone so I've got a seriously beat up device. :-/
Yes, you should be able to get your screen replaced for $35 if you don't have insurance and free if you do have insurance. Unfortunately the new screen may eventually develop a new bright spot & as others have mentioned you may end up worse off than you started. Keep responding to the poll please.

Sh***y Display & 5 exchanges...

Hi to all,
I would like to share my brief experience with Galaxy S2. After changing 4 phones when I saw defects on the screen of the 5th one I fed up and returned it for good.
The manufacturing quality of these displays are absolutely garbage on these phones. I own SGS and the screen is perfect. I expected the same thing with SGS2 especially if I pay 700 for a phone. when I came home and compared 2 phones I was disappointed.
Here is my experience with 5 phones. I live in Toronto so these phones purchased locally. First three of them from Best Buy, last 2 from Bell.
1.) Colors were fine but there was a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. A black dot. I exchanged the phone.
2.) In store I checked the phone for defects and couldn't find one (because of bright environment). I went to movie right after the purchase and realized in 2 min something was wrong with colors. When you dim the light, there was no grey. It was purple. keyboard was purple, gmail was purple. I exchanged it.
3.) Colors were so so. Still had a visible pink tint on it. and when you tilt the phone and view from different angles colors were changing, having a blue tint. If you view with 90 degrees it was pinkish again. (there is no such problem on my SGS)
addition to this, when in a dark room if you open a pure black picture the screen was showing some defects (dark black lines and spots on screen).
When you pull down the status bar, in low brightness there were some bands.
I returned the phone, got my refund and wanted to buy form somewhere else to see maybe its a batch problem.
4.) I went to another place. Got my phone. Screen had no defects but it was like someone pissed on it. It had a yellow tint. whole screen. colors were so pale. I actually kinda missed the pink tint. which was better and giving more vivid colors. I exchanged it the same day.
5.) It had a pink tint( which is ok since I got used to it). It had no banding when you pull down status bar and displays pure black very good.
BUTTTTT!!!! when you pull down status bar there was a half centimeter diameter white spot. And once you see it u never not see it. It was there in every pic (mostly grey colors)
I had enough and returned it. I wish I could find a good one like my SGS(which I didn't have such problems)
I tried 5!!!!! phones and none of them had a perfect display. Such a shame for a 700 dollar phone. I decided to wait and see if its gonna change in several months or not.
Maybe they shipped all the dodgy ones to Canada. I have a UK model (bought just over 2 months ago) and my screen is fine - no dead pixels, no purple or yellow tint...

Maybe they rushed the manufacturing for Canada. who knows. But one thing is obvious there are literally 2 different screens. I had been many stores. Many. And Checked maybe 30 display phones and from different stores and there are either Yellow tint screen or Pink tint screen.
Even if half of all the SGS2's have defective screens, the probability of you getting five in a row is 3%.
Yeah, maybe Toronto is receiving all the defective, returned ones. Or maybe you're just really unlucky. Or cursed.
Wow, that's a string of badluck. I've had mine for a couple of months now and have had no screen problems.

Yeah its probably because of my girlfriend. She never wanted me to get this phone since I am already in 3 year contract with bell owning SGS and had to purchase the phone with full price.
Also many first time buyers might not see those things. I have SGS at home and can compare. My sgs has a blue tint too but at least when you view from different angles colors don't change at all and not a single imperfection. And blue tint makes the whites brighter and less irritating than having a yellow white.

And blue tint makes the whites brighter and less irritating than having a yellow white.

You should have kept number 4. Yellow tint was a software issue and KG2/KG3 fixes it.
I only had to exchange once due to 2 dead/stuck pixels on the bottom left. Haven't seen any of the other issues you mentioned.
Sorry about that my friend, Hope you get a good one soon.
My screen is fine, but i noticed something as you said. When seeing a full black color while using any screen test app. I see many lines like drawing if looked closely :

Exactly. However when I open the same test pattern in SGS and put side by side, my sgs is smooth ad butter. Nothing on it. Just pure color, no imperfections whatsoever.
I have a question to you. When you dim the light do your status bar and other button colors band whites (such as keyboard, swype keyboard) has a purplish tint? Is it normal or a defect?
When I opened keyboards those buttons appear purplish. In my sgs they are grey.
I'm in Vancouver and got mine a few days ago shipped from Bell. No problems here with screen colors or dead pixles. My son also dropped it on tile already and not a single scratch, thank god. Still waiting for my case from ebay.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Nothing else except that, and bro my phone is always having 0% brightness hehe.
and to be more precise those drawings on full black color looks like burns on old CRT tv when suddenly power cuts isn't it ? haha
Anyways, Colors are vivid and really better than my LED TV.
and no viewing angle problems.
Do i really need to worry about those drawing while on full black? though you see them only if you look closer or focus ur eyes for long
mine has a blue tint when viewing off angle
so is this not normal because my buddy's is the same

I dont know what is normal or not no one knows. But I am assuming if there is no color shifting when tiliting on my SGS this one shouldn't have it either.
I really wonder if people don't realize whether their screen is yellowish/purplish or their phones are just perfect.
As far as I see there is no natural color phone toronto by now. And belive me I am not exaggerating it. If you put those two phones side by side their color tint is completely different. What kinda manufacturing is this?
I can even say which stores in toronto have what colors.
If u wanna see purplish tint display phones:
-Future shop in dundas
-Bestbuy in dufferin mall
-Source in dufferin mall
-Bell in Eaton center (lower floor store)
Yellow tint display phones:
-Bell Eaton center second floor they had like 5-6 displays which were all yellow)
-virgin mobile in dufferin mall.
I don't even remember some stores. this doesn't mean if u buy from there u are gonna get the same color phone. Its totally random. These are the colors of display phones.
i dont understand man, i have mine for 2 months now in UK, screen is fine it is the best screen i have ever seen.
it could be a trick from Apple hahahahha not wanting SGS2 to succeed in the USA and Canada.....

Apple has patented the concept of a display that completely works. If Samsung didn't have some sort of defect, Apple would file another lawsuit.

Yeah, gotta love the deadpan humor. Some members here are quite good at it.
I had a dead pixel when I ordered mine when it was released in UK about 2-3months ago. The dead pixel went away within 2 days of owning. Maybe your 1st device was your best 1 with a little more patience.
Theres no excuse to you having 5 devices with problems. I really think there might be quality control problems with the screen manufactors. But I do know this is probably a very small percentage since it doesnt seem widespread.
Wow man messed up. I bought mine from China and it's the best. Absolutely perfect no defects at all! Perfect just Perfect!
well I just got off the phone with Samsung and they told me that what I'm seeing is a defect
I don't know if I should exchange it for another one or just return it and stick with the Atrix
