So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!
So, I'm in love!
That is all,
Chris

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..
Anyways. Welcome glad you like it.

The sprint stores always seemed surprised. Best buy and the T-Mobile stores never blinked an eye. I've purchased 6 phones at full retail and only got an odd response once (from a Sprint employee).
Having gone from the Nexus One to this phone (and I'll buy the next Nexus phone as well) I hope it comes to Sprint. Otherwise I'll have to jump carriers again.

Ok So I just sold my Nexus and my Vibrant got here today.
I love it. There is a lot to love about this phone.
First the screen is amazing.
I love how the phone is light yet solid.
I think what I really most about this device is that if it breaks I can take it to a store and get it replaced. With my Nexus if something went wrong, I had to send it in to HTC and wait for them to send it back, me phoneless the whole time.
I have yet to notice the lag issues others complain about and I don't miss the trackball or the camera flash at all.
Clockwork is getting a recovery going and Wes Garner is Deving for it.
All is well in the world of Vibrant and I have not a single regret!
Awesome welcome aboard

Heh, I got rid of my EVO for the Vibrant! A bit smaller screen, but SO much better! I can't wait for CM6.
Well I bought the Vibrant on day 1 of release..still have my N1, have a MyTouch Slide (my daughter is using it) and still have my G1 as well. I guess you can say I'm an Android phone collector. Whatever this "super phone" is that's rumored to be coming out in September..if its running Android I will add it to my collection as well.

+1 can't get over the speed .. and the screen is like
I still have my N1.. It is sitting in my car in my cool N1 car kit... I use it as a GPS and movie player for the kids... I am still up in the air on which phone I like better..
the Samsung because of the screen.. the N1 because of the trackball and 2.2...
I think the biggest selling points for me were:
TV out
In store customer service.
The screen.
That being said the N1 is an awesome device but right now is the time to sell it and it still have some resale. With Google Washing their hands of it, I fear what the Support will be like. I also like the dedicated GPU in the Vibrant and believe that once Wesgarner and company get CM 6 on it, it will be the fastest damn thing out there, till that dual core HTC Monster hits, anyway!
So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Hey all. I decided against going with the 3vo and went with the 4g (on the advice of a few sprint employee friends). I've had root on my hero since it was possible and finally just got tired of the phone itself. This phone is everything I knew it would be. SOME issues I've experienced but nothing all that bad. GV didn't work at all but it's working now and the voice option on the keyboard doesn't work. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm not at all a dev, but will be happy to give feedback on whatever rom (once root). For those who are working on root options...GOOD LUCK!!!

Wow, so I'm not the only one that didn't fall for the 3-D crap. Goodbye Galaxy Nexus
Well,
After 26 days of owning not one, but 3 Galaxy Nexus phones, I have returned mine as the problems I had with the call quality/signal strength and the phone constantly muting itself during calls, have made me not want it anymore. Yes it was a beautiful device, had great speed, an awesome screen, and a lot of other things, but it didn't live up to what a phone is meant to be, a PHONE!. I know that there are software updates coming out to all of the folks with this phone and I hope that you get your issues resolved by it, but I simply couldn't justify keeping it for what I paid. So now back to an old phone for me until something works out!
Former Inc owner with a Nexus now. Unlocking and rooting the phone was easy. Haven't had a chance to flash anything on it yet but the roms look great. I dunno making the switch was easy for me.

Today I was at Rite Aid buying ice cream when the lady in front of me had her phone go off. At first I had thought nothing of it, until I recognized that it was the new CM9 ringtone that says "cyanogenmod" then brecks off into dubstep lalaland.
My point is she did not look like the type that would be into mobile hacking.
My theory is either her son or husband touches her phone, OR our little society is growing
Have any of you seen other Cyanogenmoded phones in the wild?

Never. One of my friends had a se x8 (yes its an ancient two years old model). Apart from his sms, contacts and few mp3, the phone rom is literally like its just came fresh from factory. No game, no apps, no nothing. Hell even the market wasnt activated yet, and theres no goggle account linked to that phone. Thats how i realize we the geeks are still minority among masses.
One time, I heard the default CM6 notification tone (Pixie Dust) at a mall and got all excited that someone else was using a modded Android device... But it turned out that the notification came from mine. XD
I know a couple of tech people (a developer and an IT guy), even, who refrained from modding their phones because they didn't see a compelling reason for it.
I've encountered a number of second-hand devices (HTC G1, LG G2X, and HTC Sensation 4G) that were all modded by their previous caretakers, though. The mod versions weren't up to date, and one of them had stability issues, but there they were. I suppose it's possible that people who resell their devices tend to be enthusiasts?
i saw a nexus s in westfield carphone warehouse (london)

I'm running 4.0.4 build cm9 with a matr1x kernel. Its a great daily driver. Its been rumored that cm9 was going to be available as an alternative to HTC sence on on their newer drives this year.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for your hard work and dedication
I hacked my sisters vibrant to run AOSP ICS and when she pulled it out to tether from it, one of the members of her club noticed and showed her his rooted nexus s.
Edit: btw my sister tethers between 20 and 60 gb a month on AT&T, unthrottled.
Oh and a few members of my fraternity are also flashaholics like me.

You can extract it from a CM9 nightly build, it's in system/media/audio/ringtones/CyanTone.ogg.

Whoa... That is amazing! If only more stores showed off what these devices were truly capable of, then I daresay they'll attract more informed customers. Though... Given that those of us who mod are used to looking online to learn how to do it ourselves, I guess it might not make so much of a difference in practice. ^^;
Still really cool to see it being flaunted by a major store though.

No she seemed to be in a rush. But I do remember what she had bought, soap & candy.
And on my way out I saw her driving away in a Diesel Jetta.

That's me. I keep my bootloader locked and my firmware unrooted because root doesn't really provide me anything that I need. I've never really been into the whole custom ROM thing for a lot of reasons. So really, the only reason for me to root is because I can. Not a compelling reason in my book.
I'm happy just keeping my phone straight stock. The stock ROMs are generally very stable even if that comes at the cost of performance.
Talking bout that, why we never see a woman here in xda...

The same reason you never see guys on a cross-stitch forum. Generally, most women I've met just aren't interested in this kind of stuff.
