Hey all. I decided against going with the 3vo and went with the 4g (on the advice of a few sprint employee friends). I've had root on my hero since it was possible and finally just got tired of the phone itself. This phone is everything I knew it would be. SOME issues I've experienced but nothing all that bad. GV didn't work at all but it's working now and the voice option on the keyboard doesn't work. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm not at all a dev, but will be happy to give feedback on whatever rom (once root). For those who are working on root options...GOOD LUCK!!!

Welcome to the evo. Don't mind the trolls they seem to be in abundance these days. Might make me goto the 3d just for that reason.
As for the voice, I had that problem in a few roms. Idk what the problem was but after installing swiftkeyboard x its working fine on my current daily driver. I can't say it didn't work before becouse I didn't try it.

Wow, so I'm not the only one that didn't fall for the 3-D crap. I just came from the here as well and the 3-D was only an option when I heard about the ram and dual core processor, after I messed with it for a while I was over it lol. Welcome man, its a good step in the right direction. The only way I would even consider going with a 3-d phone is once the whole 3-D option either plays out or gets much better.

The 3d is a solid phone and it's FAST... In the end ,however, the screen size and the 8 mega pix camera won.
Im going to look to sell my hero (actually i have two) on craigslist since i got kicked off ebay in 2003.

Who all here has bought the bigger battery for the phone? Its not that big of a deal for my to put it on the charger...but the battery life leaves you wanting. Is it worth the $60 from a sprint store? Or would amazon be a better route

Depending on where you are I would also consider it. Been something I've been thinking about doing.
Only issue would be I don't know how fair a trade would be...my epic was purchased about a week or so after launch. Its been in a case the whole time but...ya.
Is it a refurb? Or did they send you a brand new one?

I just looked for an Evo on Craigslist, and found people looking for possible trades. Found a guy who was about 20 minutes away, and met him at my local Sprint store. We checked out each others phones and went into the store where they swapped the activation on them. He threw in $50 with the Evo also. Work out the deal beforehand based on the assumption that condition, age, etc. are all the same, and then go from there once you see the phone in hand. Once you meet the person, you can always walk away if something just doesn't feel right. I'm happy with the way my trade worked out. Just much easier and safer to do locally. That's why I went with Craigslist. Just keep in mind you CAN still get screwed locally, so check the phone thoroughly. The Evo I traded for had a blown speaker, but my local Sprint store replaced the speaker for $35, so I still came out ahead. At some point, you just have to trust the person, as you can't necessarily test EVERYTHING. Good luck, man.

Inferior? No. I'm happier with my Evo than I was with my Epic. Different phones entirely. Both are nice, but I just found my Epic too buggy, and had no need for a thicker phone with a keyboard. I'm not saying the Evo is better. Just better for me. I do miss the SAMOLED screen though.
I've been throwing around the idea of trading mine for a evo but I'm just worried ill miss the epic. I had a evo when it first came out then switched to epic and I can't make up my mind on which one I want. I don't use my keyboard ever so its kind of a waste.

I have owned an evo since jun launch day,always hadx a keyboard phones,mogul,tp1,tp2 than the evo... but with the big scree tought I would get use to it cuz of the screen large keyboard,but no ,didn't get use to it,so I decided to trade and am happy just the keyboard that made it better...

Same here, I really dig the epic but really don't use the keyboard and just think the evo feels better in the hand. Right now the screen is keeping me with the epic but samsungs/sprints lack of software support and accesories for the phone are making me lean towards trading for an evo

lol no. i was in dover nh when i got it. i love the phone just my Flash is broken.
Welcome. At the time, I really enjoyed my HTC Hero. I previously had an HTC Touch with a winblows OS, so android was a wow moment for me.
There's alot of great devs and support for the EVO. It think it what sets this phone apart from any other. Good luck and enjoy (when you get your flash fixed).

thank you! i use to run windows mobile. i had the HTC mogul then HTC touch, HTC touch pro. then i went to WebOS on palm pre. then the first android i touched was HTC hero and LOVED it. im loving the evo but i hate that the LED flash is broken
Damn, people are still buying EVOs? The EVO is going to start looking like a Hero in just a couple of weeks.

im a Sense freak. i am gonna go with myn's warm rls5 with slayer69 cyan dragon theme.
i was thinking if i tried to flash it to see if i liked it and to see if it would fix my LED flash problem. but idk how to UNROOT the evo like i did with the hero. cause idk where to get the RUU for the evo. its on there main site for the hero but not the evo. just tells me how to hard reset by holding the volume down and power on and clean drive.
If you want instructions on how to unroot the EVO this thread on this site talks about it and has links to instructions on what you need to do.

I've had an EVO since launch day but I just bought my dad one over the week. He's upgrading from the RUMOR so it's a big step up for him. Radioshack had a promo over the weekend. Turn in your old phone and credit a $50 dollar credit for either a new EVO or EVO shift. So total it was only $150 plus tax out the door.
Also new to the EVO forums, got it today, cant wait to get home an root-root-root.
And flush my Hero into a drawer for emergencies.

I bought an Evo almost entirely because of our dev community.
Currently running MikFroyo 4.5 with Slayer's Dragon Theme (it is badASS) but I've run quite a few others. Huge CM fan (it's been on all my rooted phones at some point.
Great devs, great phone, adequate service. Yeah, I love my Evo
Plus, we have a Honeycomb rom being cooked up by AndroidBall. Excited about that as well

I'm gonna be jumping ship too. I talked with Sprite and I recently got my upgrade back. So now I just wait for the Evo 3D. I'm definitely gonna keep my Hero though because Iwill be experimenting in it.

So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!
So, I'm in love!

As long as you got all the need it drivers and sdk you rooting procces should take 3-4 minutes

Ive had the nexus s since launch back in dec. an while for the most part i love the phone i hate how its built my bezel, an everyone i know whos had the phone for awhile, is coming loose and creaks when u apply pressure to the side of the phone but everything else is great

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..

I have bought 3 phones off contract now and it is expensive hobbie but then again smoking is expensive too ( I used to smoke a pack a day/ the was like 150$ at month ) so I don't regret it

The sprint stores always seemed surprised. Best buy and the T-Mobile stores never blinked an eye. I've purchased 6 phones at full retail and only got an odd response once (from a Sprint employee).
Having gone from the Nexus One to this phone (and I'll buy the next Nexus phone as well) I hope it comes to Sprint. Otherwise I'll have to jump carriers again.

So I finally went I get a replacement evo cause I broke mine and they said they dont have any evo's so I'm getting an evo 3d!! The only bad thing is I'm leaving the evo forum I've been here since launch day and it's been a nice ride guys!

Welcome to no development. Evo 3D dev section is nothing but Sense and bugs. Only 2 aosp roms, cm7 and miui.

Charger port broke on my Evo earlier at work today, & I just filed a claim online, & Asurion are currently replacing OG Evos with 3D's, will have mines tomorrow

If this is the case I have full insurance I wouldn't mind breaking it but not sure I do love it and can't burn money hoping not to get flamed

Mines is from insurance since Sprint stores won't replace Evos with broken charger ports

My charging port has been loose & I've been putting off taking it in. I just might have to now. I didn't think that the 3D was worth the upgrade, but it's worth the replacement.

Wow, sounds like a pretty kick ass deal. I was considering doing an insurance claim cause my power/unlock button kind of stopped working but it works now, kinda. Has a mind of its own, works sometimes and does work other times... I was wondering how they would be doing replacements since they stopped making the OG Evo. I also felt that the 3D was not worth the upgrade at all, but hell I would gladly take one to replace my old Evo. Only thing I would miss is the dev community and the stupid amount of choices we have as far as roms and mods lol. I think it is safe to say that no other android phone has a bigger dev community than the OG Evo.
My charging ports also been broken for a couple months I just haven't bothered to fix it. I have an external charger

That's exactly what I thought. I wasn't gonna use an upgrade on it but a trades totally worth it
I love my EVO too, but I wouldn't be that unhappy if I had to upgrade. I do enjoy being able to change ROMs whenever and to whatever I want basically, but I've tried AOSP, I've tried MIUI, and I keep coming back to Sense, so I'd probably just go to Eternity ROM on 3D and be done with it. I would still miss my EVO though.
