Seen a woman with a cm9 nexus s - Nexus S General

Today I was at Rite Aid buying ice cream when the lady in front of me had her phone go off. At first I had thought nothing of it, until I recognized that it was the new CM9 ringtone that says "cyanogenmod" then brecks off into dubstep lalaland.
My point is she did not look like the type that would be into mobile hacking.
My theory is either her son or husband touches her phone, OR our little society is growing
Have any of you seen other Cyanogenmoded phones in the wild?

Never. One of my friends had a se x8 (yes its an ancient two years old model). Apart from his sms, contacts and few mp3, the phone rom is literally like its just came fresh from factory. No game, no apps, no nothing. Hell even the market wasnt activated yet, and theres no goggle account linked to that phone. Thats how i realize we the geeks are still minority among masses.

One time, I heard the default CM6 notification tone (Pixie Dust) at a mall and got all excited that someone else was using a modded Android device... But it turned out that the notification came from mine. XD
I know a couple of tech people (a developer and an IT guy), even, who refrained from modding their phones because they didn't see a compelling reason for it.
I've encountered a number of second-hand devices (HTC G1, LG G2X, and HTC Sensation 4G) that were all modded by their previous caretakers, though. The mod versions weren't up to date, and one of them had stability issues, but there they were. I suppose it's possible that people who resell their devices tend to be enthusiasts?

i saw a nexus s in westfield carphone warehouse (london)

i went back next week to find cm7 on it.... a show phone... in a massive shop.. in Europe's largest shopping center
how is that possible LOL

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for your hard work and dedication

I hacked my sisters vibrant to run AOSP ICS and when she pulled it out to tether from it, one of the members of her club noticed and showed her his rooted nexus s.
Edit: btw my sister tethers between 20 and 60 gb a month on AT&T, unthrottled.
Oh and a few members of my fraternity are also flashaholics like me.

You can extract it from a CM9 nightly build, it's in system/media/audio/ringtones/CyanTone.ogg.

Whoa... That is amazing! If only more stores showed off what these devices were truly capable of, then I daresay they'll attract more informed customers. Though... Given that those of us who mod are used to looking online to learn how to do it ourselves, I guess it might not make so much of a difference in practice. ^^;
Still really cool to see it being flaunted by a major store though.

That's me. I keep my bootloader locked and my firmware unrooted because root doesn't really provide me anything that I need. I've never really been into the whole custom ROM thing for a lot of reasons. So really, the only reason for me to root is because I can. Not a compelling reason in my book.
I'm happy just keeping my phone straight stock. The stock ROMs are generally very stable even if that comes at the cost of performance.

Idea to honour the N1, the King of phones.

I was just thinking, in two or three years when we've all moved on from our N1s, we could band together and stick them together into a giant android sculpture, or a transformer
#random
Crazy idea buddy but good idea to honor the n1, the best bravest and most innovative phone ever but the worst treated by the media, utterly assassinated.
Maybe a site which each person with an n1 IMEI rate their n1 online on a 1 to 5 scale - and get a virtual n1 to build a sculpture with, and a place to write comments on their virtual n1.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Or maybe make a chat app like chatroulette that uses the device numbers as registration so its n1 users only then create a meetup.

lol, unless you happen to be from small town #34, NJ I doubt it.
I wonder how long it will be until Google has a manufacturer produce another developer phone?
The Nexus one is the most perfect phone for me and I cant see anything but another developer phone replacing it. It's beautiful, cutting edge, gets updates quicker, is with T-mobile, and is not under carrier control.
What more could you want?
I only know two other people who have nexii one. And they both bought one because they saw how awesome mine was.
Im sure we could get google to organise something like this, an N1 graveyard of kings.
I wonder how well it would've sold if it had been available in stores.
Now that Google have announced they have the final batch of N1s from HTC, I went and ordered another one! I'm going to leave it in mint condition.
I have had range of different cell phones since 1993 and none come close to the N1.
I know that the future will bring much better phones, however, I do recognise what Google was trying to achieve with the N1.

I unlocked it, rooted it, upgraded his radio and kernel (OC, UV - and he was still running 2.1 update 1. Working for Tmo you'd think he'd get the upgrades first xD) And after that, I gave him CM6, cause that was pretty much the easiest way to get all of the GOOD mods in one. I gave him ADW using the paperless theme, and he thought that was way cool, along with the black desire notification bar. It probably took me, including download times, about 25 minutes using his laptop. So, if I could do this for a living, I could charge $120 an hour =D

LOVE!!!!!!

So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!
So, I'm in love!

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..
Anyways. Welcome glad you like it.

The sprint stores always seemed surprised. Best buy and the T-Mobile stores never blinked an eye. I've purchased 6 phones at full retail and only got an odd response once (from a Sprint employee).
Having gone from the Nexus One to this phone (and I'll buy the next Nexus phone as well) I hope it comes to Sprint. Otherwise I'll have to jump carriers again.

If no root is found would you abandon your OG evo?

I am aware that the devs are hard at work to find a root method for og evo users and they will most likely find one but just out of curiosity what would you do a root wasnt found? Would you get a new phone? What phone would you get would you buy a rooted phone off craigslist?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
yes, if a sprint phone comes out that would be worth upgrading to and has root, I would be inclined to do so.
I wouldn't because its still a excellent phone for everyday usage ..

I ve been looking @ this photon. Not a bad phone and has been rooted. I would switch
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I know that this question has already been asked before, but I am too lazy to search for the thread.
No, I would not go out of my way to upgrade and/or replace my phone just because it doesn't have root unless an easy way to do so presented itself. I would prefer to have a rooted phone, but since I will likely be waiting for a new generation (i.e. not this current refresh cycle, including the EVO 3D, Photon 4G, etc.) of phones before I do a replacement, any new phone I get will probably not be rooted right away (or if I get an iPhone, the issue becomes moot) so it makes no difference to me.
If I get an Android phone the next go-round, it will almost certainly be an HTC. Aside from the fact that I just like their form factor and think they make quality phones, they seem to have the support of a large portion of the dev community so whatever the FOTM HTC phone is will be what I get.
That Photon looks pretty fancy.
My wife got the photon and it just seems generic to me. All the widgets are plain Jane...I guess I've just grown acustomed to sense..

Nah, I just got this phone at the end of June when Sprint was allowing 2 year upgrade resets. LauncherPro Plus allows me to hide the bloatware in the app drawer, and it runs really smooth for being stock.
If I get bored I could always activate the HTC Touch or Touch Pro, I regret trading in my Moment though; Still quite a bit of development going on with it.

I have actually been honestly taking a hard look at their newest QNX operating system and thinking about whether or not that would be something I could see myself moving towards. I have a BB for work and while it's substandard compared to my EVO (a lot of the reason is that the BES settings for government phones are very restrictive and lock out a lot of features) there are some things that just can't be beat about it. For example, I haven't plugged it in to charge it for three days and it's still got almost 75% of its battery left, and I get a lot of emails and phone calls at work.
I don't know. It would be a hard sell, but I have been thinking about it.

Galaxy Nexus Goodbye Thread!

Well guys, this may be it. I'm probably going to buy a G-Nex tonight, if not, sometime this week. I've had a great experience here. My first android phone was the DINC and it will be remembered....as my new MP3 player... Sad yet great day! Thanks to all the Devs! Hope to see some of you over at the G-Nex LTE forums!!!
Also, everyone else feel free to use this as a home for your goodbyes!
Same here! I loved my Inc, got it on launch day shipped.
Also same here - I'm thinking of passing it on to my son, who is too young for a phone but loves to game on it. Anyone know of a ROM that is specifically designed to turn it into a sort of aPod?
How would you be able to get one tonight? It releases tomorrow. I'm getting one too probably tomorrow.

I've learned a lot here, since it was my first Android device. I'll miss it here, but you can find me in the Galaxy Nexus / HTC Flyer / Xoom forums.
I'll stop back from time to time, see how things are going!

Goodbye Galaxy Nexus
Well,
After 26 days of owning not one, but 3 Galaxy Nexus phones, I have returned mine as the problems I had with the call quality/signal strength and the phone constantly muting itself during calls, have made me not want it anymore. Yes it was a beautiful device, had great speed, an awesome screen, and a lot of other things, but it didn't live up to what a phone is meant to be, a PHONE!. I know that there are software updates coming out to all of the folks with this phone and I hope that you get your issues resolved by it, but I simply couldn't justify keeping it for what I paid. So now back to an old phone for me until something works out!
Former Inc owner with a Nexus now. Unlocking and rooting the phone was easy. Haven't had a chance to flash anything on it yet but the roms look great. I dunno making the switch was easy for me.

same for me,digging my rezound
I have a rezound, an OG Droid and just picked upa Dinc for the hellovit from a cousin...I cant tell you how impressed I am at the speed and feel of the dinc. I had a tbolt too for a while and the dinc feeps way faster and battery life is magnificent with an evo 2000mah battery in it. May activate the dinc one day just for $h1ts and giggles....

How is the Rezound? I'm not up for an upgrade till April, but I'm between the Rezound and GNex... I'm leaning for for the gnex due to the problems they've had rooting the Rezound

Well my mom has some great taste...

So for my moms birthday I got her an iphone 4s just because I thought it would be easy for her to use seeing how she isnt much of a techy. Early this morning (about 5 minutes ago in fact) she woke me up saying how she saw the gs3 on the news and about how amazing it is and she demanded that i sold the iphone on craigslist and pre order this phone for her. I have to say my mom surly did surprise me today and i am so proud :')
cool story bro
Nice .. you should have had more taste also .. an iphone .. heheh.... joking

Your mom isn't that tech savvy, the previous night just before she woke you up I was telling her all about the sgs3 I had in pre-order!
P.S. I AM YOUR FATHER......

Nah, it's more "I don't want to be tech support for X years." Let's face it, Android gives you a while lot more control, and with control come more options, and with more options, mass questioning/general hysteria is soon to follow.
I would still recommend the iPhone for the non-tech.

My mom got the S1 shortly after release as a birthday present.
She kept complaining about not being able to to stuff or certain things taking too many clicks, so I installed Darkyrom first and CM9 later, customized the phone with some apps (most of the 'Go Dev' apps) and she's completely happy now.
With an iPhone such features would've been nearly impossible to get.
Note that she's technically illiterate (well she thinks otherwise but meh...) and uses the smartphone-capabilities only at home to check Amazon orders, get a weather forecast and listen to foreign radio stations through TuneIn.
I've configured MyBackup for daily backups to be kept for a whole week so even if she mistakely deletes or misconfigures something it's like 2 clicks to restore it.
Set me up with your mum :silly:

Well yes and no.
Generally parents aren't really that tech savvy and they use these smartphones in limited range of functions. Take my parents for an example. I got my mother an iphone which she transitioned from a blackberry. I got my father an Evo which he transitioned from a blackberry. Initial reasoning behind the purchase was same as what you're saying above but it's actually not quite true. Both of them use it for calls, email, text message, im, and internet and both have had no issues doing just that. In fact my mother seems to envy my note purely based on size.
Now i did pre-order the S3 for sprint for father's day based on his feedback. Despite the fact that he has an ipad, my father wanted the S3 over iphone4s and evo lte based on the interest in AMOLED screens (he asked me on more than few occasion what kind of screen tech is used in my phone)

You've completely missed the point bud. I'd get any of my non-tech relatives an iPhone over an Android anyday of the month. This is because I've been been the "guy to call whenever **** blows up."
Now, no where in my rant did I say they didn't envy my SGS3 for one reason or another. Hell, my mom even said over the weekend that "wow, I can read the text so clearly because that screen is so much bigger on your phone...!" And, just about every iPhone user quivers when I'm sitting there Swyping like a boss. But, does that mean I'd get them an Android over another phone? No, hell no, and twice again on Sunday... no. The fact of the matter is, any carrier sold phone in the States here that ISN'T an Apple product is riddled with bloatware. Add on top of the fact that Android simply isn't as polished an experience out of the box, I wouldn't bother.
Now for myself, I wouldn't touch an iPhone. I need my phone for work. I need it to do the things I need it to do when I need them. And, the only way to get that is to setup and customize my phone the way I like it. I'd be nowhere near as productive on an iPhone, and that would only end up pissing me off, resulting with the iPhone 6 feet under in the pool, hah.
But again, to each their own. For me, I've been the family tech support dude... really, been there done that. Got way too many other things on my plate now than to keep carrying that torch if you know what I mean.

I'm having a bit of parent envy here. My dad, after watching me using my Touchpad running CM9, asked me "is it as good as the real thing?" (read: iPad). I was so ashamed for him. :crying:
