If no root is found would you abandon your OG evo? - EVO 4G General

I am aware that the devs are hard at work to find a root method for og evo users and they will most likely find one but just out of curiosity what would you do a root wasnt found? Would you get a new phone? What phone would you get would you buy a rooted phone off craigslist?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App

yes, if a sprint phone comes out that would be worth upgrading to and has root, I would be inclined to do so.

I wouldn't because its still a excellent phone for everyday usage ..
Sent from my OG EVO....

I ve been looking @ this photon. Not a bad phone and has been rooted. I would switch
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App

I know that this question has already been asked before, but I am too lazy to search for the thread.
No, I would not go out of my way to upgrade and/or replace my phone just because it doesn't have root unless an easy way to do so presented itself. I would prefer to have a rooted phone, but since I will likely be waiting for a new generation (i.e. not this current refresh cycle, including the EVO 3D, Photon 4G, etc.) of phones before I do a replacement, any new phone I get will probably not be rooted right away (or if I get an iPhone, the issue becomes moot) so it makes no difference to me.
If I get an Android phone the next go-round, it will almost certainly be an HTC. Aside from the fact that I just like their form factor and think they make quality phones, they seem to have the support of a large portion of the dev community so whatever the FOTM HTC phone is will be what I get.

That Photon looks pretty fancy.

My wife got the photon and it just seems generic to me. All the widgets are plain Jane...I guess I've just grown acustomed to sense..

Which is already confirmed to not currently support the EVO 4G, nor is there a projected timeframe for when it might. Most of us assume it never will, because HTC wants to encourage people to upgrade.

Nope! cuz I waited for a long ass time to get this phone and regardless if there's root or not my phone is still the **** and compared to a blackberry...Mmmhmm Naaw I don't think so I'll die before I go back to that

Nah, I just got this phone at the end of June when Sprint was allowing 2 year upgrade resets. LauncherPro Plus allows me to hide the bloatware in the app drawer, and it runs really smooth for being stock.
If I get bored I could always activate the HTC Touch or Touch Pro, I regret trading in my Moment though; Still quite a bit of development going on with it.

I have actually been honestly taking a hard look at their newest QNX operating system and thinking about whether or not that would be something I could see myself moving towards. I have a BB for work and while it's substandard compared to my EVO (a lot of the reason is that the BES settings for government phones are very restrictive and lock out a lot of features) there are some things that just can't be beat about it. For example, I haven't plugged it in to charge it for three days and it's still got almost 75% of its battery left, and I get a lot of emails and phone calls at work.
I don't know. It would be a hard sell, but I have been thinking about it.

Yeah, my BB is a trooper; been carried around the house by a great dane with no negative impact.

I'm keeping the Evo until I am eligible for an upgrade, or it dies.
If it goes the way of the dodo, I would probably go back to my hero, until the next HTC phone comes out.

I personally would go get a evo3d or epic touch i used to not b into all this rooting and flashing roms but i love trying to find the next new tweak to make my phone more powerful damn you xda!!! damn you!! Haha jk

I think it's safe to say the majority of the people here in the EVO section still have root

Does anyone else here feel... empty?

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

LOVE!!!!!!

So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!
So, I'm in love!

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..
Anyways. Welcome glad you like it.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Rooting in and of itself isn't going to make a damn bit of difference in battery life. It's what you do with the root that counts... lol, sounds like a phallic joke gone bad...

New phone - stick with shift or not?

Looks like Sprint is going to have to give me a new phone since I'm on my third Shift since release, and this one has major antenna problems (lose data, can't make calls half the time, texts are intermittent, etc.). So I'm wondering if I should try one more shift or actually get an Evo. I'm not getting a Samsung device, they just feel like crap to me.
I don't know what to do darnit lol.
You could see if they'll give you an EVO 3D.

I say stick with the Shift . But I'm biased. Love my Shift, hands down best phone I've ever owned. I had an EVO before this. The EVO is a great phone. But a little too big for the pocket. Plus the Shift can be OC'd way higher. But either way your good. Plenty of Dev's on both phones. Plus you can run some awesome Mik roms on both. Just my two cents.

I'd stick with shift, but my question is did u ever root your phone or anything? Seems like u were having strange issues might just have needed a custom Rom or something? Just my input though

I looked at the 3D, but it just seems gimmicky to me.
The Evo is likely my best option, but I'll certainly miss the keyboard. I even thought about the Nexus S or Epic, but I just hate the feel of Samsung phones, so I don't think they're an option. I'm not entirely sure they'll let me get another Shift, but if they do you can bet I'm asking for a new one and not a refurb
I've rooted all three Shifts multiple times, the first two were hardware issues (loose keyboard--me being too picky, then a loose ear speaker). Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

if you think the 3d part of the evo3d is gimmicky, just ignore it and realize its a really a CDMA version of the HTC Sensation. One of the best phones on the market.
The shift is a great device, but the 3d blows it out of the water.

Isn't the screen always in a "3D mode" though? I've only seen a 3D once, and only from the side, and it looked pretty weird at that angle. I'll have to go to a store and check it out
ok i my shift has a major antenna problems also i got one phone sent out but do they still change the phones for you?? and whats the $ for say a reg evo . i got my phone over clocked to 1.5 and sprint keeps telling me slower data due to the cpu is 800 not 1ghz like the evo i wish i could tell sprint a thing or too

Well, if you've still got the problems keep calling and complaining. The Evo and the Shift should be an even swap I think. I haven't called them to find out yet.
Granted, I'm on an employee plan and go through employee care tech support, so the rules and prices are a little different.
edit: guess I didn't have a choice...they're sending me yet another Shift, and probably another freaking refurbished one at that.
Well on the upside, since your on your fourth Shift. My buddy works for Sprint. You can actually request/ demand it be a new one. Also, if your unsatisfied with this one new/other. You can request they give you a different device equal to the Shift.

If I could get them to exchange my Shift for a refurb, I'd never activate it and have it on ebay so fast...then get something else...something that can be rooted. For now, I'll just be patient.

They told me that after my third one I could get a "like device", which I took to mean any device of a similar price range, guess I was wrong, or they were yanking my chain.

A refurb shift is likely not upgraded to 2.3.3 or whatever the upgrade was to--yet. This one's a week old and didn't come upgraded, so root was quite easy, even though it didn't help
It's definately a plus if you can still root it.

I don't actually work for them, my fiance does lol. The biggest perks about the employee plans are the much lower prices, yearly upgrades, no actual contract, and quicker tech support.
well, I got the new phone in the mail, activated it this morning. Other than having a somewhat loose slider again (which is going to be extremely annoying) it looks like it might work.
updated to 2.3.3 though, so that kind of sucks at the moment.

When my wife had the Samsung moment, I had to go through so many devices before they would offer me something comparable. Which was the intercept, an even worse phone. Not even the Hero was an option! Ended up emailing [email protected] and then reporting to BBB and finally got my upgrade reset. It was a total PITA.

[Q] Mytouch 4g Getting Ice Cream Sandwich Update? (2.4/4.0)

Will the mytouch 4g (mt4g) be getting Ice Cream Sandwich (2.4/4.0)?
What do you think?
highly doubt it

Who knows....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072717
ICS is supposed to be a type of "universal" update that brings all devices under one platform to unify android instead of being fragmented the way it is. I was doubtful that the sgs4g would get it but after reading up on it it does appear hopeful that devices like ours will get the update as well.

So thanks for pointing that out. I cant fix the poll title so bare with me.
Officially? I'm almost certain that's a no. Took them 6 months to give us GB and this phone is about to hit it's end of life cycle.
But unofficially, most certainly. Kmobs and Zinx have this phone, the two prominent devs in the CM team. So I'm highly confident that through them, we'll be amongst the first batch of phones to get ICS via CM8.
Just my thought.

I agree we will get it via cm8 not officially though

Tmobile, from what I remember is part of the Android alliance. They promise upgrades, when a new Android OS comes out, it'll only end when the phone is 18 months old. I doing we'll see it right away, but i'm pretty sure we will officially see it at some point.

Not sure about that because to me, T-Mobile has the worst track record of phones getting updates.
The myTouch Slide 3G was promised Froyo last summer but didn't get it till earlier this year. And you can pretty much throw GB out of the equation for that phone.
The Vibrant has yet to even have a GB leak while the Vibrant 4G gets GB leaks every month or so. Which is sad.
The G2 was supposed to get GB very early but are now just getting it. And its life cycle already ended a month or two ago so that getting ICS is doubtful.
And that's just to name a few.

I'm not gonna lie, but you are correct about all of that. I'm willing to give them another shot, them ima go to sprint. I do like t-mo,I had a good plan with them, they made me change plans, when I added a new line, also I just got throttled. If they can update this phone to ICS, I'll stay if not, i'm gone.

I hear ya, I love TMO as well and I would love to be wrong to be honest. But looking back at how the Evo, and even the freakin year and a half old Droid INC got GB it made me think how terrible TMO is compared to the other carriers.
I would probably switch to Sprint as well if anything, I just wish their 3G was good.

You would think the company that first introduced Android to the world, would set an example for everyone else on how to update your Android's in a timely manner. Instead they are usually the last ones to do so or they'll release a new version of the phone that is updated, an scrap the older ones. The only reason why i'm still with then is,i have good connection at home an in my area, an I don't want to spend the extra money for a etf.

From what I was told (by a German TMO sales rep), they have a fairly long internal QA process to make sure that a new ROM works (together with any of their own additions). So it usually takes them more than six months after a new ROM has been released, before it is officially available from them. This is not only true for Android, but is also valid for Blackberry and WP7.
FWIW... We switched to sprint. Hated sprint cdma. And t mobile is hardly the worst track record, all the carriers have been about the same. I think verizon and the droid line up is your"worst"...

I can understand a 6month time frame to get everything working. I had the mytouch 3g slide, an that took a year an a month(not sure, maybe 2) to get upgraded to 2.2, they didn't even do an ota. It was either do it yourself via HTC or go to a store an get it done. I think that's pretty bad though, it took them that long.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
Yeah... I don't see why they need at least 6 months. I mean it took CM's team like a little over a month after GB's source was released to get it to multiple different phones. Plus CM implemented their CM Settings as well.
I'm not saying it's a wrong statement, just wondering how a group of mostly college kids can beat big companies to it.
