I had the phone for a week now, did couple of factory resets (when playing around with stuff), and yesterday morning I permrooted and HBOOTed the phone...
The phone overall works great, really no complaints, but 10 minutes ago I receive an SMS and open up Messages, and the only SMS I have the in whole app is the one that I have received...so all my SMSes (5834 to be precise) have vanished into thin air...
I am doing another restore right now, thank god I have it on the card...
It's pretty worrying that the phone would be so unrealiable to erase information...
There are two more guys with DHDs on AndroidForum with the same issue:
http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-support-troubleshooting/214946-sms-have-all-disappeared.html
Has any1 else had that happen?
happened a few times to me too, but cannot trace it down to a specific reason...
this IS annoying and forces me to backup my sms on a daily basis!
Wow, that definitely blows...and you have stock DHD, so rooting/HBOOT mods are definitely not the reason...
If it will be a regular occurence I might as well throw the phone in the trash, coz to backup 5000+ SMSes on daily basis, no thank you...
iPhone had no issues with all those SMSes for years, it can't be the sheer number of them...
Nope not to do with size as it happend to me and i only had 300-400 texts altogether before it happened. Btw when it happened to you did ur messages app FC then u have to restart only to find no texts?
Whoa this worries me, how should I go about backing up my messages? I'm all synced with HTC Sense, won't that keep em backed up?

Elaborate on the question a little bit for me, I didn't quite understand you!
I received a SMS, and I just wanted to send a text back, pressed Messages only to find it's completely blank.
Restarted the phone and nothing still blank.
I also had an issue with it today that it didn't store calls I made in Call History, after I restarted it, it started working again though.

SMS Backup & Restore by Ritesh Sahu...it's avalabile on the market...HTC Sense can only back them up, but not restore them back to the phone (not that I know a way to anyway)...
http://android.riteshsahu.com/apps/sms-backup-restore
This presents a real problem for me, as it makes it a useless phone...I need a phone for calling and SMSes primarily...everything else comes second...
This happened to my Desire Z today, at around the same time as the OP.

There is an app in the market that you can use to backup and restore messages to and from ur gmail acc. this app also has an setting to backup an sms right away when it receives one. dont know the exact name (phone battery empty) but i found it when i was searching for backup sms in the market.
Hope this helps you.
Sorry for my vague description, here it is again in more detail
I received a text message from a friend and i received a notification in my noti-bar
I pulled the bar down and click the message, it then tried to open the messages apk
it force closed saying htc.messages.apk or something hast FC'ed...
I thought lets just restart and it will all be happy days again
I restarted and open the text fine, but when i pressed back to go into my inbox i noticed there were no other text message!
And that's exactly how it happened

Ah ok, now I got it!
As far as I can recollect there was no app crash on mine, just pulled up empty file.
I thought maybe when I restart the phone things will get back to normal (like they did with call history), but it didn't...Messages were still blank.

Hmmm...this almost makes me wonder if this is somehow not related to HTCSense.com...
It's just weird that it happened to both of us at about the same time...
If it happens again I'll disable syncing with HTCSense (it's more or less useless anyway, I have local file backups of both), and see if it happens after that...
My HTCSense message log is completely empty, too. I don't think it ever worked.
I had this happen a few weeks back. I opened a new text message and the messages widget crashed. All my messages seem to have been deleted. I was quite concerned as my messages contain important information (I did got to the trouble of migrating them from my old phone)...an email from HTC to see if the emails were deleted (or just not visible as some have reported on other forums) and if there was a way to get them back elicited this response:
Thanks for contacting HTC.
We appreciate your support for our products.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for bringing your concern to our attention. With regard to your question, unfortunately, once messages are deleted from the SMS widget, you can no longer retrieve it, unless you have a back up from your SD card or to your SIM card.

Needless to say this jumble of standard form responses did not answer my question. A further question about how I could possibly avoid this situation in the future; their response...
We appreciate your support for our products.
Thanks for the update. With regards to your concern, please be advised that this is a rare issue that happened to your phone. We will forward this concern to our technical support team for future developments. We advise you to perform a soft reset on your phone. Rather than bash my head further against a brick wall, I downloaded an app to forward my SMS messages to my gmail as a safe guard and copied what messages I could from the only part of HTC sense that was partially working for me.
I had the same with my HTC Desire Z
I received a SMS, and when I opened it, all my messages were gone, except for the received message.
I read in the official android bug-forum, that this might be a issue with sqlite, but it has not yet been fixed in android 2.2. luckily I just migrated everything so most of my sms are in a backup.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=5669
I have had the same issue a few times with the Desire HD ROM running on my HTC HD2...this is ridiculous.
Guys, I experienced these as well. I realised that when this happens, my messages are actually in HTCSense.com... The weird thing is, before having my DHD I was using HD2 with DHD rom... Then when I got my phone 2 days ago, those sms' which were not supposed to be in this phone reappeared... All the histories I had in my HD2 were in... I suppose this is an act of HTCSense.com...
me too!
This happened to me a few days ago..
I went to reply to a text message that I'd forgotten about and my list was blank!
I went to create a new text and it popped up saying the messages app had crashed.. I killed the process and no luck - crashed again.
Restarted the phone and the messages were still gone..
In terms of non-stock apps/configuration that may be worth mentioning I have:
Android Task Killer
Superuser/VISIONary
Titanium Backup
The only other thing I have done is enabled usb diagnostics (recommended in another thread to stop the occasional lag).
Anyone got any ideas?
Now it happend to me, too!
Performed a hard reset on tuesday and everything went finse since than. SMS were automaticly backed up from HTCSense. But 10 Minutes ago all my text massages were gone... They are still on my HTCSense account - but how to restore???
Thats a mess...
Tough luck guys!
I guess I won't be logging in to HTC Sense anytime soon
Tried to restore my SMS with my SMS BackUp programm. Got the notification "Successfully restored 119 items (2663 dups)."
But on my DHD are only the 119 sms...
Seems that there are still some left-overs the massage widget cannot read.
Ideas anyone?
Nobody an idea? or the same problem?
Hey guys...
Got a weird one here... I was using my phone earlier, and had all my sms messages in there. I sent a text about 1:30pm, and all were still there then. I received a phone call at a little after. After the call, put the phone down, and didn't look at it for a couple of hours. About 3.30pm, I went to send a message. In the messages, it was all empty. A bit confused, I restarted phone. Upon restart, still empty. So, sent a text, and then I'm the only message in there?!
So, what gives. How come this all deleted?!
A bit fed up, since the last backup I have dates back about 2 weeks ago... I guess there's no way to get them back. But, how come they would just delete like that?

Maybe u wiped it??
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Other people reported this issue on the Z here and here
It seems no solution or explanation was found for the moment.
So the best is to backup regularly your SMS until a fix is possibly released someday.
Thanks for that missparker... At least it's not just me going crazy...
Now, I'm wondering whether it might be something to do with the htcsense.com website and the syncing?!
I used to be able to get the messages showing on htcsense when I first signed up for it. But then, I had to factory reset the phone. When connecting up to my sense account, I Had all sorts or problems. So, I deleted my sense account, signed up again. After this, they had disabled the messaging etc. But, when I went in to htcsense yesterday, it looked a bit funny (i.e. the locations was apparantly disabled, which I had after I first had problems with it). So my guessing is htc sense deleting all the messages as it synced?!
Also, I got a message when restarting phone saying something like background searching de-activated... Couldn't find this on google?!
Have now set sms backup & restore to do a daily backup... Had that before, but when I ran the latest update, it messed up, so had to run full ruu, and forgot to setup the schedule for backup and restore! More fool me
Not sure that it's got anything to do with htcsense.com.
When it happened on my DZ, I got an FC of the SMS app then when I restarted it all my messages were gone.
Maybe there's some sort of reinitialization that it does if it detects corruption in the messages?
Does anyone know where and in what format the messages are stored?
R.
Hi androids.
I have a HTC Legend. CM7 gingerbread..
And i have had troubles for the last months now. 2-3...
Its about sms. Some of them come all at once, like 10 minutes ago. I got 7 text/sms messages from my sister, all at once. (That she sent like 6 days ago...Diffrent days. I wondered why i got no answer, and she said in the phone if i did not get her sms, and i did not. until now...And this is not the first time this has happened as i wrote in the beggining.)
This is starting to get really annoying. And i bet its not the provider either.
We have the same telecompany here in sweden, and this must be the phones software. Is it to much sms in the inbox? Because i can recieve sms from most directly, even with 2000 + sms in the inbox...
I could try to delete all sms, but i prefer to keep them.
What could cause this issue? I appreciate all help.
Thanks
I updated the CM from 6 to 7 last week. Same error. But the same sms in the inbox..
Should i try a diffrent ROM maybe? Have anyone heard/read about this wierd/annoying issue?
I personally haven't ever heard or read of this issue pertaining to CM7, and it likely isn't being caused by it if it was happening before moving from CM6 to 7. I would try installing a different ROM first and if you still have the same problems try contacting the service provider. Another idea might be to use a sms backup app to back up all the messages and then delete them, if having them deleted doesn't make a difference then you can easily restore them.
yeah. I bet its not the rom. Or provider...
I could try and delete all sms after backing up them. That should fix the issue...
Or on another forum, they said that i could uninstall some apps. Because i only got 18 mb internal storage. So many apps that i can not move to my sd card.
Thanks for the reply, and sorry for a late reply. Arigato.
I know that there are plenty of threads talking about mybackup and titanium back but I"ve had an issue with this app. It stops and force closes randomly or if it does restore it deletes all of my current sms and then restores my saved sms in a strange order. I didn't particularly like it.
I'm constantly having people texting with new information. So after I flash a rom I might have new texts right away and I need my old texts as well. The only one that has worked was sms backup and restore (haven't tried the pro version yet) but this one worked great. It didn't delete my new incoming texts, restored my old texts in a nice orgranized way, and didn't crash. But it took over two days! for this to restore my sms and once you click menu or change the screen you can no longer see the progress bar and once you get see that the app force closes
sorry its super long but I need something that can keep all of my new incoming texts (after I flashed the rom) and restore my old sms in a somewhat reasonable time. I know its a lot to ask for (and I"m willing to pay for an app like this) but I just need some recommendations.

You can try MyBackup Pro. I'm not sure if it will overwrite your new messages, so try at your own risk. My best advice would be to just flash a new ROM when you're not expecting to be contacted anymore, like later into the night or something. That's what I do.
Is there any quick way of restoring a large number of text messages, either from flashing somehow, titanium backup, or any other method? Maybe manually index all the messages so my message app(s) don't lock up, my phone doesn't lag, and my phone doesn't get forced to reboot? Or maybe restoring it by parts? (not sure how to split my conversations, one of them is 18k messages).
I just went from 4.4 to 5.0 recently (still rooted), and used SMS Backup & Restore to back up my texts. After a few hours of restoring, I managed to restore nearly 35k of texts. However, it's taking forever for the messages to be indexed. I would get unresponsive "do you want to wait or close the messages app" on both the stock Samsung and the Messages+ app. If I knew for sure that it just takes time and I should just keep the messages app open, I'd do it, but I've had it open for a few hours with nothing to show for it. The reason I did this was because the Messages+ app from Verizon only restores the past 90 days, when I wanted all of my existing texts ported over. Any suggestions?

35k text messages? For real? Lol
Titanium can definitely do it but I have a feeling once you climb to that sort of a number any app use is going to take a while and the ROM is probably going to think its choked. Does it eventually finish if you wait an hour?

Yeah, according to SMS Backup & Restore.
The restore finished after a few hours. Actually indexing the texts which I thought should have been done with the restore process? For a few hours, it's been stuck saying I have the same 19 unread messages, has been locking up both my ability to navigate anywhere (locks up sometimes), and sometimes even reboots my phone.
I'm trying to figure out a way to either flash all my texts back (flashing my backup with those texts intact works just fine), or somehow restoring them by splitting them up in chunks maybe a few thousand at a time (no idea how to do this).

If you have a backup of all of your texts then why are you trying to use SMS that seems to be locking up and causing you pain. Titanium may do the same thing, just got to give it a shot. I don't have 35 thousand texts to F around with and tell you what my results are. Good luck!

So I've used SMS quite a few times in my rom charades. My suggestion would be that when you do a restore do the restore for the last 6 months and then a second restore earlier but skip duplicates. At least then you're splitting it in half? I don't know how many months 35000 texts go back but that's worth a shot.

I did something like that, Messages+ synced the last 90 days worth of texts, but 35k is from a little over a year's worth?
I tested restoring data only from FlashFire, which does properly restore texts but I'm getting screwed because I restored from 4.4 onto a 5.0 rom, so a ton of apps aren't happy with me, and I'm not sure if I've screwed anything up. I do know I'll need to re-install my xposed for 5.0 at the very least.
Edit: am currently trying it in smaller chunks. No idea how I'm going to do the one 18k conversation from the past 5 months though.

If you use Google's Messaging+ for your default txt app they are stored on Google servers, accessible on any device, tablet and your desktop and restore to any phone you activate automatically.

When you say google, you mean Verizon's? That's what I'm using. But it only restores up to 90 days maximum from the current date you start the restoration. Even if you have texts existing within 90 days, if the time stamp of those texts are not within 90, they don't get restored.
Anyways, as an update, I've been restoring messages ~6k at a time. There's little to no indexing after sms backup and restore is finished. So it seems it will work for the rest of them. Too bad I had to flash to a backup before my initial 35k just to be able to access my messages app once again.
Edit: Ended up fixing it by loading my texts 6-8k at a time.
