Maybe its just mine, but I am very glad that i decided to opt for the 60.00 3 year squaretrade warranty with my ebay purchase. Mine has started to wiggle side to side, as in how the kaiser slides, but we all know the touch dual doesent slide that way. I was thinking that maybe the little rails that guide the top part of the phone up may be began to wear, but I havent had the phone for a month yet, and not a single drop just normal pocket wear. Is anyone else experiencing the little wiggle room like I am? Its not bad by any means yet, but if its started doing it already, i can only imagine it will get worse over the next couple months.
Agreed - a slight side-to-side wiggle but also the looseness makes using the power button to turn off the screen a little fiddlier
Totally agree, mine started to have some vertical play as well, in less than 14 days... so I have sent it back to HTC - awaiting advise if they will try and fix or replace?
hmm, seems to not be an isolated problem....and now that you mention it, it does make the power button a little tougher. Now i live in the US, and purchased mine off ebay, would i be able to send mine to htc as well? if not i can always fall back on my squaretrade warranty i took out on it as well.

I can vouch at least for mine, it has never been dropped or mishandled in the least bit. I've definatly got some side to side motion. Heres to hoping that it only gets so bad and then stops.....but somehow i dont see that happening

This is actually my first slider phone, i've always had solid candy bar style phones, never even a clamshell type. I've just never liked the idea of having those kind of moving parts on my phone, seems like an easy break point. Now the touch dual has improved hardware specs from the touch right? or was it mainly just the slider keypad added to the dual? Im just curious because I love the interface on my dual, and honestly i dont use the keypad very much, i usually use onscreen keys. Maybe if i have to ditch my dual due to problems, i would just settle for a touch..... Actually i'd love to have an athena, I just dont know if the size would agree with my pocket heh.
it has umts. touch has only wlan. other than that it is the same i guess
got my replacement phone back and it is definitely more "solid" with little or no wiggle. The wifes is going pretty well after about almost 4 weeks.
mine is currently being checked out thru squaretrade, in the meantime I have since upgraded to an advantage!
Does anyone's Touch Dual slide loose vertically also horizontally??

yea, mine seems looser in both directions but still fully functional. the power button on top is now harder to use, which is somewhat annoying.
i, too, have the square trade warranty so may make use of it when the time is right.
i only have horizontal direction (the non sliding direction). the sliding direction keeps steady.
but it didn't increase since i got it. i will just watch it. maybe i use it to get a new device after a year
has anyone used the squaretrade warranty for this issue? how did they respond?

Touch has 200mHz processor 64mb of RAM, Touch dual has 400mHz and 128mb RAM. Don't downgrade.
So far mine still holds firm.. might be a problem on some models only.
mine wiggle too, doesn't line up perfectly. but having owned a stellar then orbit 2 (3 diff orbits) they all had build shortcomings. i voided the warranty on my touch dual by taking it apart to line it all up better. when i got to the slide screws, 2 weren't even tightened up properly, loose. so i relined it all up and it still off a little. i didnt venture into the screen case, and tbh, if im that bothered i could buy a new case with screen for about $80 USD and see if thats any better. but, i think it has it's own charm, and will stick... for now
mine wiggles, too, but since i have it under warranty, until it gets worse, I'm going to stick through it. hehe.
Just picked up a Snap. (Euro model)
The top row keys (menu keys, home, back, etc..) make a funny sound when I click them. They feel very "wrong". It sounds like it makes a click before I actually push it all the way in. So there is a sorta plastic-y double-click sound.
I rushed back to the store and the guy opened another box to compare and that was making the same noise too. He suggested it's new and will break in with time. (The display model was good but it has been "broken in" by a lot of customers.)
(QWERTY part of keyboard is fine.)
I'm inclined to think BOTH phones had a problem and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
I had a similar experience with a laptop's touchpad button once and it got worse over time. So this is why I'm pessimistic.
Has anyone else had this problem/issue?

Well it's good to know.... but also sad news because apparently HTC screwed up something.
After using mine for 24 hours the problem was worsening so I just returned it to the store.
I don't know how old is yours (and if it's getting better or worse), maybe you can also return it?
I didn't get another one because frankly I was not awed by the Snap.
Coming from an Excalibur (S620) and based on specs I was expecting to be blown away by the performance of Snap.
But with 3VOLUTION's latest 6.5 ROM on my trusty (and beaten) Excalibur I could not see any improvement. (minus, of course, 3G and GPS)
Maybe I will buy another Snap in the future but going to wait until this hardware issue gets acknowledged/fixed.
PS. It is important to point out, the phone they had on display -abused by a lot of people- was PERFECT. Strange.
@an.ghezzi - please let me know the age of your phone and how this issue develops over time.
i've bought the snap just a week ago and the problem is always here.
not worse, not better. let's wait, maybe someone can tell us what's wrong.

PS. the "funny sound" came only from the "call" and "home" buttons. the others sounds ok...
Just an update.
I picked up a second Snap a couple of weeks ago. Tried the keys in the store and they were not perfect but almost.
Lately I'm getting pissed off with them again. They are just as bad as the first one was. And I know this is a minor problem - probably not even a problem for most people - but I get so frustrated by it. This damn thing feels so cheap. Cheap crap plastic. My Excalibur is 3 years old but still rocking stronger.

Same with me. I have a T-Mobile Dash 3G and was wondering why this was happening. It's happening on my left softkey button and home button. I'm gonna take it back to T-Mobile on Tuesday.
Yeah I'm very pissed about this. This new phone (second one, after returning first) is just sitting in my drawer and I'm back on my Excalibur. Squeaky cheap plastic is my pet peeve.
Unfortunately I'm through the 14 days return so I'm stuck with it.
I have one of the first HTC Dash 3G's, got it from Customer service before they were even available for sale online or stores, I have no problems with the buttons what-so-ever, no clicking, just smooth presses. I wonder if there was a shoddy batch that went through to some areas.
Try some rubbing alcohol
On my Ozone, I've noticed a bit of trouble with a few of the keys on the top row feeling spongy. I used a alcohol wipe to kind of loosen up the keys which worked great. I also had noticed the battery cover recently started creaking, so I tore a business card in half and placed it over the battery, which tightened that right up.

Now i know why there are less stocks of snap in asia! i have the same soft key problem, even after one to one exchange! am really disappointed with htc on this, not sure how many others have this problem and if there is anything we can do to fix this? maybe even take it apart??? arghhh...
I ended up selling my second Snap too.
Besides the sticky keys I just did not like it :-/
ookba's custom ROM made it a lot nicer but I just could not get used to the device. Yes the keyboard looks great but the overall design is odd (screen too small compared to the whole unit), it just did not feel balanced.
I have a bad feeling about the fate of the "standard" WinMo (non-touch) edition. The new professional devices are getting nicer. They need to get a new finger friendly OS and a proper capacitive touch screen - once they do that, non-touch will go extinct.
I guess it took me until now to see how Microsoft ignored mobile development for so long. What was killer technology in 2006 is just a mess by now.
I still love my Excalibur, I dare to say it was the best phone I ever had.
Here is how I imagine the perfect phone: Blackberry makes the hardware. Ookba joins Microsoft and they release WinMo 8, or so. XDA community builds GUI.
I really wonder how many people are facing this issue... sigh.
So far, it seems its happening all over the world. I have tested and changed 3units. The current one is a bit better ... at least the call button does not creaks as much. But I miss the e71 in terms of built quality. I was hoping there is some hack we can perform to fix this.

I bought my HTC Snap from Singapore. Experienced the same "weird" feeling, but only on the Call (Green) and End (Red) buttons.
Seems to be getting a tiny bit better after using it for a week (or maybe i've become accustomed haha)
Agree with you on the screen proportion thingy. I still love my old E61. Keyboard + Screen was spacious and lovely. Fast forward a few years and this is the best HTC could come up with?

I got an A43 in part because it's got a resistive touchscreen so I can use it with an ordinary stylus (for instance, I am developing an astronomy app and want to be able to select individual objects on screen from a crowded field without any zooming, just as I can on my Palm). However, I've found that the A43 has the same problem with its resistive touchscreen that my Palm TX does: sometimes, when a touch is released, it registers a largish (0.25 to 0.5 inch) movement. This causes problems--it makes button presses in on-screen keyboards get registered in the wrong location.
Anybody else notice this?
On the Palm TX, the user community eventually figured out what the problem was and a third-party vendors manufactured a hardware solution. The problem was that Palm skimped and made a substandard plastic digitizer, which made it distort on release. The solution was that someone manufactured replacement glass digitizers you could install (you can still buy them for about $25) and those who got them were quite happy with them.
My A43 has a plastic screen, and not a very hard one at that. (My Clie stylus would scratch it lightly, so I had to switch to a softer-tip HTC stylus.)
With a good quality resistive touchscreen, it would be worth my while to put some effort into modifying AnySoftKeyboard to support sweeping a stylus through hexagonal keys in an an ATOMIK layout, with all the ASCII symbols available together, like in my PalmOS myKbd app, even if I end up being the only user (I get the feeling a lot of people don't like using a stylus).
not sure what to say about this, besides the fact that my current screen (Archos 43) is annoying because it doesn't allow me play emulators that require multitouch, pewpew, etc. (not that pewpew is a good game anyway). I kind of like the stylus because it feels more ergonomic than rubbing my fingers all over the screen, but I do have the same issues. I typically use Swype or Smart Keyboard Pro because Swype is _the best_ at predicting even if you swyping half-asleep texting your friend for no reason. Smart keyboard pro lets you configure swipe gestures to switch between regular keyboard w/ suggestions, arrow keypad+space (for time-wasting flash games), compact (two letters in one key), and T9, like an older phone's crap keyboard but with really nice prediction. Overall, I can't complain because my Archos has twice the features (camera, android, external speaker) of my older media device, for about the same cost ($230), even though it doesn't have a sexy AMOLED screen and days of battery life (still pretty nice though, and it doesn't feel so flimsy).

also, I use my nintendo ds lite stylus just because it works and I made a scotch-tape holster on the back of my Archos so I wouldn't use the black piece of cheap plastic. ಠ_ಠ
I sent my A43 back for RMA, and the one I got back is amazingly better. I can actually type with my thumbs on the on-screen keyboard. On the old one, even if I used a stylus, I'd get spurious keystrokes, sometimes even on keys that aren't next to the one I was pressing. I still get that on the new one, but less often.
Maybe it's because I'm keeping the screen protector on?
I also wonder if the issue isn't that a stylus is actually bad for these screens?

I have much less time than I did when I was involved PalmOS. But I've made a few simple apps (you can search the market for "Omega Centauri"), and am planning an astronomy app.

I had a PMID701i which came to a crashing demise recently.
Dropped onto a ceramic tile floor, the touchscreen cracked a hundred ways from Sunday and is
now totally unresponsive. So I've got a project-tab now.
The PMID701i supports usb hosting, and I've got a usb2go key that I made so I can plug mouse/keyboard into it.
If I could get some kind of decent screen replacement I could have a nice little experiment box to toy with.

Is it worth it to try and replace the lcd screen? Any hints on where I can get such a replacement part?
Did anyone have good luck hooking up a tab (of any kind) to another display?
What about hooking the board into another type of display, like an lcd screen or something?
I was out to the local compu-franchises today and they just don't sell/replace tab screens at all.

btw, I know it's a cheap tab that's why I got one. It's good for learning with. Now I'm waiting for a Tegra4 device.

A week ago my hd2 stopped working, the touchscreen was dead. I didn't know what the problem was so I flashed another rom on the phone but still the touchscreen didn't work ( I thought it was maybe a software problem ). Even in the ClockworkRecoverymod screen the touchscreen doesn't work.
Is this really the hardware and does the touchscreen need a replacement or can I fix it by doing something else?

I wish i had have been sensible and post here too, when my hd2 touch screen stopped responding. Mine would be on and off. One day it would work and then the next it wouldn't. Like all my old electronics i have which i have replaced with more modern technology, i pulled it apart (with no care for the internals) just for the fun of seeing what was on the inside.
I miss that phone. I now use a Motorola Razr HD. I hate it. Actually, since the good ol' Hd2 days, i've grown to dislike most Android phones. They're too big, lacking physical buttons and Android apps have become overloaded with adds. sigh i miss my hd2.

Spot on & unfortunately so true with Android platform. It is nothing but an advert platform & current design & quality of handsets is poor in general. Amazes me it so popular as is a huge step backwards in basic function compared even to wm5 ...
