I'm assuming you used the ./gfree method to root your phone?

Rooted Phone...but Superuser access is dennied

SO i rooted my mytouch 4g today. I was trying to install Cyogen mod7.
But i have a problem. I am Already rooted ( i know for sure) but when i go into termal emulator and type "Su" it keeps giving me permission denied. Now my question is can i continue to go into rom manager--> And flash CM7 from zip?
Will it work and would eerything work once om on Cm7?
Are you compleatly sure? Go to hboot and check that you have s=off just in-case. Sorry if im not much of a help, im not exactly a pro.

If terminal gives you that message then you are not fully rooted.

The recovery will not tell you if s= off. The engineering scree will however.
Tallestspoon how do you "know" you are rooted.

Look up MT4GROOT, and download it, it's the easiest way to root the MT4G
This is what I used and it was my first time ever doing anything on a smart phone. Plus it unlocks everything.

Just getting s=off is not enough. S=off will allow you to full root by allowing non official recovery versions to be flashed. Basically s=off means you have disabled the security system that checks the software you are installing is official versions. It does not mean the ROM itself has root. There are specific files and functionality that must be installed to have root access. The SU app can be installed but not functional without these essential files and functions.
Basically there are two kinds of root. Root on a stock device, which inserts the SU functionality into the existing software, the other is root with custom software. The second option requires s=off. (or at least an exploit that gets around it) Temp root is a process in which the system files are copied into a temp location and the software is tricked into using the copied files instead of the real files. That means that rebooting erases the temp files and the software uses the originals again. This is useful in that with these files copied and root enabled through them, they can be used to trick the software to allow the real files to be altered.
After you do get s=off, you must run visionary to temp root again, and before you do, check the box to ensure that system is R/W after temp root completes. This is where you trick the software to allow you to change the real system files.
Remember, if you reboot at any time before perm root is achieved, you will loose root and SU functions.
After temp root you should run visionary again to perm root. I had issues with the app not wanting to start the process for perm root. I just ran the temp root with R/W enabled, downloaded ROM manager from the market, then used ROM manager to flash clockwork recovery. Then I put a ROM zip on my SD and rebooted into recovery and flashed the zip and BAM running on a rooted custom ROM.
Make sure you pick a clockwork version that will work for your intended ROM. You must pick the "all clockwork recoveries" option to select the correct version, as the default version installed is 3.0.0.5
If you want CM7 use 3.0.0.5 if you want any froyo based ROM get the one ending in .12 (as the version .14 never flashes properly, for me at least and that is on 3 different MT4G I have rooted) Now that you have a custom recovery, you can install any ROM you want. (keeping in mind the froyo/gingerbread recovery compatibility)
Remember that just installing a custom recovery is not root either, you must install a new ROM or use visionary to gain perm root.
I am rooted, and s-off. I actually have some restores/ and backups that will take my phone back to unrooted through ROM manager. I can always go back to another backup though, and I am rooted again. Strange but it works somehow. I am using Royal Ginger and love it now, but I could still go back to s-off, unrooted through Clockwork, so I don't understand that.

[Q] S-off but no root?

First time posting although I've been lurking for quite a while so hopefully I don't get flamed out of here on my first attempt.
I tried posting this under another thread in Q&A but was not getting a response and I'm anxious to try and get to where I could start flashing some ROMs . As far as I know I've done everything correctly but I'm sure I'm missing something. I don't mean to double post this but like I said I'm really anxious to get started.
First I did root my Evo using unrevoked 3, all seemed to go well and correctly as I ended up with S-OFF, superuser app, etc. I created a backup and everything, (still running stock Sense ROM.) Do I need to try using Unrevoked Forever now?
I started reading posts about backing up RSA keys and WiMAX partitions etc and when I connected the phone (yes usb debugging and charge only); opened a command prompt and browsed to the ADB directory I never get the # confirming I have root access. (I only get the $)
Now from what I'm reading Clockwork mod backs up the WiMax anyway but I still wanted to walk through the process to get more familiar with it. I guess my first question is do I really need to back up the partition and keys if I have a successful nandroid backup?
Also I installed root check and the under the basic setting it said I had no root access, and then under the advanced setting it said I did.
I tried installing Ti backup and clicking under problems to install busy box thinking that may be the problem, but I don't see the setting it describes there where I can change to install busybox.
Finally I also downloaded the busybox installer. It gives two options of where to install it in either /system/bin/, or /system/xbin/....does it matter? Will installing it this way be ok or do I need to push through ADB? If I need to push through ADB then obviously I need to get my # root access figured out.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can try and help me make heads or tails of this situation.

I would recommend your next step would be to flash over from clockwork to amon ra.

Download the PC136IMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card. Update it through HBOOT. Once that is done do a nand back up of your wimax keys. Then proceed to download a rom to your liking and flash.

Yes, flash over to the Amon RA recovery. You might need to delete the PC36IMG.zip file after installing so that it will not ask you again to update.
Then you could just download the superuser app from
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.2-efgh-signed.zip
copy it to the root of your SD card, and then install that from RECOVERY in Hboot menu.

Verified, ran August GB RUU and phone re-rooted

Okay I verified that if you have s-off you will be able to get root back on your phone if you run the RUU.
As expected the RUU did unroot my phone but it didn't touch s-off. So I downloaded CWM 3.0.0.8 from dougpiston.com and changed it to PB31IMG.zip (this has to be a flashable zip file to work) and it loaded from hboot no problem. I then downloaded the latest superuser app using ROM Manager, version 2.3.6.3 efgh, older versions will not work, and just flashed it through recovery. Superuser does not need to be renamed update.zip you can just leave the name as is and select let me choose zip from sdcard and it installs just fine.
Took a while for me to get superuser running again as I had an older version and I could only find the newest version in ROM Manager.

You can also get it from here
Thanks to you both. I didn't even click on the Download ROM because it's premium and I'm still getting my feet wet with the whole root thing. I'm off to try the GB RUU w/radio and then re-root.
What if you have s-on?
You can only re-root if you have s-off. S-on blocks you from replacing the stock recovery with a custom recovery and blocks the installation of superuser into the system folder.
Eventually the Unrevoked team will come up with a new way to root phones but this most likely won't happen till the OTA actually starts to drop and people report how they lost root. And then who knows how long it will take them to do it. Could be a few days to a few months.

I ran the RUU with all expectations of not being able to re-root my phone just so I could test if the OTA would change the security settings on my phone. I also still wasn't sure if I could even get root back if it was still s-off so I was willing to experiment with knowing full well what could happen. From past experience with the Eris and losing root for about 3 months you have to flash these leaks with all expectations that it will break your phone and not sweat it too much if it does as eventually someone will find a fix.

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt in my mind someone will come up with a way to root 2.3 on the INC
Alright, I've got s-off, downloaded the superuser 2.3.6.3 efgh app from the ROM manager butttt... now what? I've tried to boot into recovery but I just get an icon of a phone with an exclamation mark inside of a triangle, which I'm assuming isn't good.
Flash clockworkmod recovery first, then the superuser zip.
I tried that but it gives me an error saying: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
If you flashed the GB RUU and lost root and/or s-off.
Someone correct me please if I'm wrong but couldn't you download the froyo RUU and load it then root and s-off?

How are you trying to flash it? I'd recommend getting the 3.0.0.7 (AMOLED) or 3.0.0.8 (SLCD) recovery from www.dougpiston.com. Flash in hboot. Or is that how you're doing it?

The Eris had a manual method (race method) for rooting the phone but I could never find one posted for the Inc. It involved having the phone connected to a pc with adb running and then taking out the sdcard and rebooting, at a certain point of the boot process you counted to 4 and then pushed the sdcard back in. If you did it correctly adb was able to connect to the phone and you could slip a custom recovery and su in. It was rather complicated and only a handful of people ever did it correctly myself included and it was eventually replaced by a one-click method. The one-click method still pretty much does the same thing you just don't have to manually remove the sdcard or have the phone connected to a pc. In some ways the Eris has a lot more support from its community than the Inc does probably because it was Verizons first android phone.

I second this it has to be a flashable version (contains android-info text file + the recovery image) to work. I used the 3.0.0.8 file from doug pistons website which is already to go just needs to be renamed PB31IMG.zip and make sure it isn't being named PB31IMG.zip.zip as file extensions can be hidden especially if you are renaming it on a pc. I downloaded it directly to my phone and renamed it there so the extension wasn't hidden.

I beleive that is becasue you stil have the stock recovery? Did you flash the clockwork recovery from dougpiston.com?
I flashed the clockwork mod recovery 3.0.0.7 from dougpiston via hboot.
I tried several different ways to boot into recovery to flash the superuser app but it isn't working. When I try to do it from the clockword mod app it says the same error: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
I tried to manually download the superuser .zip and boot into recovery from the hboot menu, but it still gave me that same phone icon with the exclamation mark and triangle and then nothing.

First thing are you getting into recovery from the hboot menu? And you can't get into recovery from ROM Manager because you need superuser installed to do it that way. It still sounds to me like you don't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Maybe only version 3.0.0.8 works I'm not sure but that version is for both amoled and SLCD screens. So either try reflashing your copy of 3.0.0.7 or try flashing 3.0.0.8. I do think I had to flash the recovery a couple times to get it to stick.

Downgrade to HBOOT from 1.02.0000 to 0.52.0000

Hi, everyone who have been waiting for a way to downgrade their HBOOT so that they can get S-OFF, cause they upgraded to the Official RUU Rom... I think I found a solution for you!
Also give you permanent ClockWork Recovery!
I haven't test it on any other Slide, cause I have only one. So, sorry if it didn't work for you.
Here is what I did, in case you're wondering, I downloaded the Official RUU from HTC Support website, extracted the 'rom.zip' file from Windows Temp folder that it creates, replaced the newer 1.02 HBOOT with 0.52 HBOOT, that I got from 'ESPRIMG.zip' (the Stock rom).
And also replaced the recovery.img with ClockWork Recovery img file.
Then I just renamed the 'rom.zip' file to 'ESPRIMG.zip'
Put it in the root of my memory card, powered off, rebooted into BOOTLOADER, and it detected the file and asked me if I wanted to update, I chose YES, and it went on without a hitch. Next thing I knew, I had 0.52.0000 HBOOT, with permanent ClockWork Recovery(so I dont have to use 'update.zip' anymore), and also the Official Latest 2.15.531.3 unmodified rom, (I like stock Espresso, that's why I bought it ) but you will LOSE ROOT but SuperOneClick method works for me to gain root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Method:
1. Download this 'ESPRIMG.zip' file - http://www.mediafire.com/file/cuemg74en7kk0a3/ESPRIMG.zip
2. copy/paste it to your memory card, in the root, not on any folder.
3. Make sure your card formatted to FAT32 file system, or it won't detect it.
4. Do a Nandroid BACKUP, if you can, cause I don't know if this will work for you. But it will wipe all your data and setting. SO BACKUP!
5. First you need to wipe data and factory setting, and wipe cache and wipe davlik cache (Otherwise it bootlooped for me). So boot into recovery first!
You can do that by going into BOOTLOADER first then selecting Recovery ( for that remove memory card from mobile or else it will start update) or if you have ROM Manager then you can use that to reboot into Recovery, any recovery will do stock or clockwork.
6. Ok, so after Wiping from recovery. PULL battery, then insert back the memory card with ESPRIMG.zip file on it. Reboot into BOOTLOADER, and apply the update.
It should do a reboot automatically to downgrade the HBOOT.
You will see the change if it worked. After applying the update, reboot phone normally.
And if all done correctly, you should have 0.52.0000 HBOOT, and also a permanent ClockWork Recovery. Now you can root by using SuperOneClick method. And also get S-OFF (I didn't need it, cause I have permanent S-OFF! , at least that's how I explain it)
Im guessing it worked for me because I have a factory unlocked S-OFF HBOOT from HTC. Because, to try this out first, I updated my phone via the OFFICIAL RUU from HTC Support Website and it showed S-OFF on my 1.02.0000 HBOOT.
Then I tried this method and it did downgrade my HBOOT and I still had S-OFF without doing the AlphaREV method.
So I guess I have a kind of permanent S-OFF??! :S :?
Hit thanks if it helped.
I am no developer but I am learning
Any feedback would be appreciated.
And yes, my major is CS and I LOVE IT!
any one test this yet?
If i try this and it does not downgrade my HBOOT will my phone be bricked? Will I lose root? I would love to try, but would like a little certainty.....

I don't think that you phone will be bricked, it would just not downgrade it but the HBOOT will remain. Yes you will lose root, but that can be gained easily by SuperOneClick Root Method.
I not certain myself about the brick. Flash at your own risk.

I'll be trying it once the download finishes for me. I'll update you guys on whether or not it worked for me.
I'm using a full stock phone btw, factory reset and blank sdcard as well. Hopefully this works for me.
UPDATE:
Looks like this was a dud.
I applied the update 3 times to my phone, but my Hboot still didn't downgrade. It's still on 1.02.0000. Also didn't flash the permanent Clockwork Recovery that we were hoping for either.
I'm guessing your permanent s-off is what let you use this successfully. So for anyone who has S-OFF already this would probably work fine.
On the plus side, it didn't brick me =)

Well thanks for the feedback, yes I think its the permanent S-OFF too. So does that mean I have a phone that was permanently UNLOCK my T-mobile or HTC it self for testing purposes? Is there some way to use this to unlock that 1.02.0000 HBOOT?
any updates on how to downgrade?
i need to downgrade my Espresso, i have the latest official t-mobile update.

[Q] Installing ClockworkMod Recovery

Greetings all.
I have a HTC Tattoo still running with the original Android 1.6 that came with the phone. I am trying to install the latest CM7.1.0.1 but have run to a few issues due to how old the Android version is.
I had some issues here, but I was able to install Universal AndRoot and Superuser. So, the phone is fully rooted at this point.
Since the phone is running Android 1.6, Rom Manager Free will not install, since the current version does not support this version of Android. Therefore, I am unable to install ClockworkMod Recovery in this way.
I tried finding older versions of Rom Manager that support Android 1.6, but when I tried installing them, the message I got was "com.koushikdutta.rommanager could not be installed on this phone". I could not get past this...
So, I tried the manual way through adb, using Cyanogen wiki. Through this way, I am only able to get up to the point I try gaining superuser rights using the "su" binary provided. At this point, I get the following error: "su: permission denied".
My question is: is there any other way I can flash ClockworkMod Recovery?
Thanks in advance.
Hi all,
I am stuck with the same problem.
I used the one-click-root app provided in this forum -> worked.
but due to android 1.6 am not allowed to install the rommanager app.
and with ADB I am stuck- -> getting same error as above: su permission denied.
I hope anyone can guide me though the installation of the clockwork recovery.
thx
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update:
i think i am one step further now. i installed rommanager 3.0.1.7 (found in the internet), which installed the clockwork recovery.
when i go to "download rom" it says i need a newer version
i downloaded the rom manually, coppied to sd and selected in rommanager "install from sd"
system rebooted and showed my phone and a triangle (with power+home i come into a menu)
anyone can help me here to flash the rom?
Rommanager did not install clockworkmod, i think there was a su issue...

and nice work developers! thumps-up XD
So, finally you can download normal apps for android 2.1+, 2.2+ 2.3+
Hi again,
I finally have some time to try this again. But before I do anything, do I have to create the goldcard? Because the htc is already rooted, so I was thinking maybe I only need to perform the last part of it, which is installing ClockworkMod.
Thanks again!
No, you dont need to create goldcard again
Goldcard
Hello lemmymet,
You said I don't need to create the goldcard again. But I never created a goldcard... I have superuser through Universal Androot... unless this creates a goldcard automatically for you.
Regardless, the attempt to install only recovery failed. It gave an error saying it couldn't copy 'su' file, probably because there already is one.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again.

Following post and the messages around it, should help you flash clockwork with universal androot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18225026#post18225026
goldcard is needed only to overcome CID check
[CID - Carrier identifier, used in locking a phone to a specific carrier's SIM cards]
with goldcard you can flash unbranded RUU, so that you can get rid of mobile carrier specific junk (for example in my case orange junk).
and you dont need it for rooting and recovery flashing.
