[Q] Internet for navigation? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Do you really need a working internet connection/Wifi in order for a navigation application to work properly?

No copilot and many others have onboard maps

IGO uses no internet/wifi but you need to download maps. PM me if you want a link.

[Q] Offline GPS Navigation App

Anyone know if such a program exists and specifically for car navigation (unlike the offroad one currently on the market)? Kinda like Microsoft Streets & Trips but for Android. I am hoping to use my Xoom as a offline GPS since it is Wifi only model.
There are several. The cheapest is CoPilot. I have it as a backup for when I don't have data. The US only version is normally $4.99 (but I got it on sale for $2.99). I find it OK, but I prefer Google Maps Navigation.
Another is Navigon (it's quite a bit more expensive). A market seach should turn up some more.
Don't forget that Google Maps Navigation will cache the map and route for you . So you can start Navigating while you are in a WiFi hotspot and it will cache all of the maps to finish your navigation. Of course, if you get too far off route then you will have a problem.

Yeah that's kinda what I'm worried about. I need this to be a 100% offline app with full stored maps. Also obviously to be compatible with the Xoom.
which phone do you have, you could enable your wifi hotspot using your 3G network. (I do it on my desire Z/G2)

I have a Blackberry and has no option for Wifi or Bluetooth tethering. I can only do Dial-Up Networking but android doesn't support it as a client.
Have you tried Aura Sygic? if it works on XOOM and Honeycomb?

And you can find it for free on a site for Pirates.

I used Sygic back when I had a WinMo. Was a good app. I'll check this out.
Found several apps:
Aura GPS Navigation
MobileNavigator USA
Locus Free
CoPilot Live USA
NavDroyd
Anyone try any of these and know which works with the Xoom?

[Q] Navigation apps

Are there besides Google Maps, other navigation apps that run good on Honeycomb tablet? I'm thinking of Sygic, Ndrive, Navigon, ...

The updated NAVIGON-app has Honeycomb-support build in, I think ...

There is thread exists about Navigation apps already:

I using NavDroid app (~$7).
uses OpenMap.
Not as good, as Google Map, but works completely offline.
Co-Pilot was crashing on me all the time.

Navigation not used stored map

I'm using the standard (stock?) ROM 2.3.3 UK tmobile.
Previously when I used navigation, it used the map on the phone. I noticed recently that now when I use navigation, it uses Google maps instead. I re downloaded the UK maps, but no luck. :-(
Any idea how I make navigation used the stored map?
Thx in advance.

Using the stored maps for HTC Locations is not free. Have you paid for the service?
using the stored maps on my dhd has always been free, any extras like traffic cams and such require payment but not the preloaded maps, otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose.

mpathan did you go into locations in your settings. there´s a setting in there to integrate google navigation into htc locations, i´m guessing that you have that clicked. if not i´m not sure why you´re having problems
The maps are free, it's the turn by turn functionality you need to pay for.
I had google navigation integrated, however, the on phone map use to work. I have unchecked it now, but it makes no difference.
thats strange , i dunno what to say then. it sounds like my personal problem... my stock web browser used to work in desktop mode no problem but lately its just mobile web pages only whether its checked in settings or not. it pains me to have to use dolphin browser or opera, they work fine they just annoy me. sorry i couldnt be any help, hope you find a solution
No worries, thanks for your reply.
Just tried using Google maps. That doesn't pick up gps now.
Using gps test tool, 7 satellites are picked up, but not used by Google maps

Use iGo, much better.

I paid for the license. Now things are fine .
I thought you could use the stored map for navigation without the turn-by-turn function, but I guess thats not the case.
Thanks for all the replies
whether there is an offline application folder?

GPS-app like glympse that do not needs g-maps

Unfortunately all apps like glympse, runtastic, endomondo ...needs access to google maps that doesn´t work on my ROM. Therefore I am looking for an app like glympse that doesn´t need maps (like navigon does not need maps).
The same problem with tasker that I cannot install either.
Anybody an idea?
Try Waze, its a fantastic satnav app, that doesnt need maps. Linkable with foursquare and facebook (if you wish) and u can calculate the fastest way to ur destination by avoiding heavy traffic! (With help of other waze users)
Great navigator!

GPS questions.

I guess this is phones in general, but I have a G2 atm so asking here. I've read multiple times in the past you don't need a data connection for GPS to work on map apps and such. I was out of service completely last night and I tried using Google maps but it said cannot connect to data, so I couldn't even use it. I'm just confused as I didn't know you needed data to use GPS.

You need data to populate the maps.

You either need a navigation app or download from Google maps for offline use.

There's no offline navigation with Google Maps. You can pre-load the maps, but it won't tell you where to turn.
TomTom works while in airplane mode with driving navigation directions though. That's what I used in Canada last week.
