I guess this is phones in general, but I have a G2 atm so asking here. I've read multiple times in the past you don't need a data connection for GPS to work on map apps and such. I was out of service completely last night and I tried using Google maps but it said cannot connect to data, so I couldn't even use it. I'm just confused as I didn't know you needed data to use GPS.

There's no offline navigation with Google Maps. You can pre-load the maps, but it won't tell you where to turn.
TomTom works while in airplane mode with driving navigation directions though. That's what I used in Canada last week.

Anyone know if such a program exists and specifically for car navigation (unlike the offroad one currently on the market)? Kinda like Microsoft Streets & Trips but for Android. I am hoping to use my Xoom as a offline GPS since it is Wifi only model.
There are several. The cheapest is CoPilot. I have it as a backup for when I don't have data. The US only version is normally $4.99 (but I got it on sale for $2.99). I find it OK, but I prefer Google Maps Navigation.
Another is Navigon (it's quite a bit more expensive). A market seach should turn up some more.
Don't forget that Google Maps Navigation will cache the map and route for you . So you can start Navigating while you are in a WiFi hotspot and it will cache all of the maps to finish your navigation. Of course, if you get too far off route then you will have a problem.

Yeah that's kinda what I'm worried about. I need this to be a 100% offline app with full stored maps. Also obviously to be compatible with the Xoom.
which phone do you have, you could enable your wifi hotspot using your 3G network. (I do it on my desire Z/G2)

I have a Blackberry and has no option for Wifi or Bluetooth tethering. I can only do Dial-Up Networking but android doesn't support it as a client.
Have you tried Aura Sygic? if it works on XOOM and Honeycomb?

I used Sygic back when I had a WinMo. Was a good app. I'll check this out.

IGO uses no internet/wifi but you need to download maps. PM me if you want a link.
For some reason I tried to use the new download maps feature and downloaded the maps but when I turn data off and try to use navigation it doesn't work am I doing something wrong?

You will have to manually look at the map. It looks like turn by turn doesn't work.
Even with all the tiles downloaded, Maps and Navigation still query the server to find routes. There is a long-running search to find ways to get Nav to work offline. So far, the best people can do is get map tiles offline, and even that is hit-or-miss.
Other offline navigation programs are out there, but if you're like me, you just want Google Nav to work with no connection.

Don't you think Google map tiles would take up just as much space? There are some programs that let you download only the tiles and detail that you want (Locus Maps, for example).
I really like this new feature, lots of potential. One big disappointment is they limit you to 10 tiles. I'm not sure hire big the tiles are exactly,b it would take 5-6 to get all of Louisville... but I can only download 10?
As soon as I saw this I imagined filling up several of my sd cards with maps of my state.
I always wanted to have those maps on my sd card.... Im on mikg 2.2 n i don see any options to download any maps.... What rom r u on ?

My understanding is that the directional data comes from the Google's servers, so I don't think this will work. I have not actually tried, but I imagine that since it has a GPS, that you may be able to see yourself moving via offline Maps data, just without directions. I'm curious and will try this when I drive home from work in a few mins.

Yes you can, it won't be as accurate as GPS + wifi, but as long as you can see the sky, you should be okay!
(I used maps with no data connection in Geneva a few weeks ago!)
Navigation will give you an error definitively saying that it cannot work without a data connection.

There's another thread on this. I've tried it. As long as you set up your route while you have wifi and you are within maps you downloaded, navigation will work fine. The only "issue" I've found is that if you make a wrong turn, while it is trying to reroute you it will only tell you where to turn, not say the actual street name.
So it's not perfect, but it works.

Stand alone navigation app work just fine such as "co-pilot"....etc
The app doesnt find location unless wifi/mobile location is turned on in phone settings. And then navigation mode shows exact location while map view doesn't.
I've Google the issue it looks like there wasn't a sure fix for this. I'm on stock with the latest OTA update. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I figured out what the issue is. I used app ops and disabled location access in google play services, thinking it's related to Google play store. That somehow disabled google maps gps but not navigation's GPS. Everything's goog now after i turned location in Google play services back to on. Hope this helps anyone that runs into similar problems.
