MT4G screen not working. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My wife's rooted MT4G touch screen is not responding to touch anymore nor is the trackpad working. I don't know what happen but I'm going to try to get a warranty replacement, but I need to unroot and turn s on before I send it in. My question how can I do this if the screen and trackpad are not working? Is it possible through sdk and if so, anyone can provide me instructions ? Thanks on advanced.

Sounds like a defective digitizer. Considering it's a hardware issue the warranty would still apply

Hmmm, yeah but don't I have to unroot it first? I thought if you sent it in rooted, it voids the warranty ?

Rooting voids the warranty when it comes to software. Defective hardware is still covered. Doesn't hurt to unroot though. Toss pd15img on ur SD card and restore it

Ah okay, thanks. I search forum for pd15img, will that turn s back on or does T-Mobile not care?
Oh if the trackpad is not working, how can I restore it?? Possible to do it from sdk ?

If you got s-off, i don't think unrooting it will undo that. there are specific guides to turn s back ON but i doubt you would be needing that.
Good luck though.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V4NAODYZ
that is pd15img, the link shared by theunlockr so pretty good source. It will revert all parts of your system back to stock, so it should be s-on after.
This isn't meant to fix the screen, and the touchscreen isn't required to use pd15img. It is only for extra protection against getting your warranty rejected even though it's a hardware issue.
this guide will help

Hello,
Thank you, I was able to get the phone to see pd15img and is started doing it's thing, and I went to reboot it. Now I get hboot screen that kind of looks like this:
GLAVIER PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0-86.0000
MICROP-0429
RADIO-25.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Sep 27, 2010, 11:12:59
[FASTBOOT] <--- Shaded red with white letters.
<VOL UP> to previous item
<VOL DOWN> to next item
<POWER> to select item
[BOOTLOADER] <--- Shaded blue with white letters.
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
I tried all the buttons and it is like they are not responsive, I know for fact the volume buttons work because I had to use them to select for the .zip file. I also uses the key tester in clockwork recovery to check and see if my keys were working or not. I have tried pulling the battery out, so I am not sure if I missed a step??
Thanks,
Kei

EDITED:
It seems I forked up. I didn't realize it but it is my own fault for being in a hurry. I did use the gfree method on my phone by moving the gfree files to where the guide told me and then used a terminal emulator to execute gfree. Since I already flash PD15img.zip, and I am screwed or is there something I can possibly do so that I can properly unroot by undoing gfree? If I got to learn to use adb, I will! I appreciate your help in advance!

well with that I assume you did gfree to root. I may be wrong but I think you need to use to touchscreen to revert that completely. Just try to get a replacement with the current setup.

Guess what, the screen started working but track pad is not as far as I can click but not move. So with that new development, anyway to get out of hboot?
Thanks for all of your help.

well... you can just reboot normally, right? in that case, put the part7backup file wherever you're supposed to. I didn't do the gfree method, so i dont really know how to do it. that guide i posted earlier should have proper instructions, though.

Help *bump*
Still having issues, I am hoping someone can help me please!
I got hboot to respond by reseating the sd-card, it just continues to detect pd.zip file and will flash it successfully but after it reboots, it just goes back into hboot.
Would this post help me fix my problem? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12899770&postcount=4
I want to get this phone back to stock so I can replace it via Warranty due to the trackpad & touchscreen failing.
Thanks a bunch in advanced,

Bump.
Please help...

The only thing I can think of is, buy an sdcard reader if your pc doesn't already have one intergrated. Take out your sdcard, put it in the card reader, plug it to your pc and format the sdcard. Redownload the pd15 zip via pc and copy it to the sdcard.
Insert back your sdcard. Boot into hboot and let it do its thing. When its done press vol up for yes to update and when that's done power to reboot. If it reboots fine then you're good to go.
If that still sends you to hboot after reboot, the last thing I can think off to do is just remove your sdcard and boot into hboot. That way the phone won't read anything and let you choose and boot into the stock recovery(it should be blue lettering) from recovery just wipe data factory reset and reboot again see what happens then.

super slow after rooting

i used the method mentioned here
hxxp://theunlockr.com/2010/11/15/universal-android-rooting-method-visionary-method/
and it shows i still have SU permission... but everytime my phone re starts, it opens visionary and says rooting phone...
but the thing is, my phone is snail slow now... and when i go back to the main screen, it takes forever and says loading... then my normal screen shows up... its also taking forever to do simple things, such as open text msg's
any suggestions on this problem?
Lol i think you didnt properly s-off and prem-root your phone. Go to G2/disireZ android dev... locate the thread about prem rooting. There should be 3 methods. 1 gfree(safest) 2. Unforgivens method( fastest) and 3. Rage method( dont know) well yea... hope u get rooted and if anybody sees my post can you guys better explain lol thanks
Edit: lol just go to stickes and there should be a thread that talks about guilds and roms.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
shows my phone is rooted, and su lets me access it, also just tried to dl setcpu and it has access as well....
just the phone is still stupid slow.. and i want to fix that
Okay... what rom are u using?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
stock, i have not touched anything yet, tryign to get input on which is the best sense rom to dl...
basically i just want to clean up the phone, remove all bells crap from it, and speed it up a lil bit....
Quick thing i want u to do. Can u turn off your phone and hold vol down + power and tell me what it says on the upper left of the screen
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
ya it says s-on still.... whats the easy way to get rid of this... and as i said i just want to speed up this phone a lil bit
Lol do you want full root? Or just speed up your phone?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
both, id like the option to upgrade to a nice optimized sense rom, and to speed up the phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965 ( 1st method of prem rooting) (fastest)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...Subsidy_Unlock.2C_SuperCID.2C_and_Radio_S-OFF
( this is the gfree method the safest) i advice to follow this sinces its the safest
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
but since it says my phone is rooted already, can this cause problems? or can i un root and re do it?
Lol alrighty. When you get prem-root/s-off you should flash virtuous Rom(sense) or cyan RC1 Rom(stock android feel).
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
No lol you are not rooted. You have temp root. If your hboot says s-on then your not rooted. I advice not to mess with the prem root button on visionary.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
no no what im saying is that since my phone says its s-on still, but it says its rooted... how can i start fresh, by say unrooting my phone, or is there some way i can just hop in the middle here....
im new to all this and i dont want to screw up my phone lol
Your using visionary right? Since you have s-on after you reboot your phone it should be unrooted again. Just make sure you turn off the start at boot thing on visionary
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Dont use visionary, use the other two. There have been to many problems with Visionary.
i did turn it off, and setcpu still has access it says.... so where can i confirm on the phone is it is or is not rooted....
Does h-boot say S-Off?
Like i said before. Turn off your phone hold vol down + power. If it says s-off on the left top of the screen the your rooted. Well i used unforgivens way of prem rooting and no issues. S-off (security off)
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
nope says s-on

Perm Root not working

I followed multiple steps for installing perm root on a friends Mytouch and for some reason we could not get the s-off feature to work. I noticed too we do have SU access via adb or terminal but I still never could get s-off. After we got root we used rom manager to install clockwork and after the fact it installed 3.0.2 i believe it completely borked the recovery. I stepped it down to 3.0.0 and still had the same issue. The main reason i wanted to get s-off was to adb flash the recovery but I got a signature fail. Any ideas or suggestions to get this working correctly? Rom Manager will not let me install 2x cwm basically stating it can not install it period. I also tried the batch file root method same issue. Thanks for your help in advance.
Please look at the "True permaroot and S-OFF" thread in Development section, and execute step-by-step.
If your friend's MT4G is running Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3), you'll need to use Gingerbreak instead of Visionary+ to get root access.

If you are following the ./gfree method step by step it will root your phone.
If you are using the root.sh script and it's not working chances are you may have a bad eMMC chipset and it will not root properly.
I know HTC said they would be pushing a update to close the exploit hole that is used to root our phones but i don't think it's been pushed yet.
Im not sure but it said something about not being able to back up partition or something but either way nice HTC is becoming a motorola nice

HTC isn't "becoming a Motorola". HTC, is completely different. We do have a locked bootloader. But it's easily unlock-able whereas Moto's aren't.

I don't know what to tell you. There are several threads out there regarding how to root your phone. Both in a .gfree form and a root.sh form. One of those 2 work for 99.9% of EVERYONE.
You might try finding someone who put together a .zip that can be flashed through the android recovery(white screen with boot options, etc.). Otherwise you can get the RUU and return to stock. After that follow the directions step by step and DO NOT mix methods. This should result in an S-OFF root, if you did your homework correctly.

As someone already explained before, when the security is on, no matter the amount of flashing you're going to try - it won't get you anywhere, since it won't be written to the actual ROM, and will be gone on restart.
Unless you pick a guide, follow it exactly, and post here everything that doesn't look proper - I don't think the forum can help you much.
Here's one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Follow it and post anything that doesn't look good. Including your bootloader version.
The root is sticking on reboots but still no soff that's what i have been saying and i followed the guides to a t its not my first picnic rooting or roming a phone this one just has me stumped

What does your bootloader show when you boot into it?
For the root to stick after boot, you had to have S-OFF, otherwise the eMMC wouldn't have been written to.
Having no info from you, as I said, it's impossible to help. If all this thread is just a complaint - by all means, but in that case there's no point in helping you. If you want help - you need to provide enough details for people to help you. Obviously, nobody can figure out anything from "I can't get s-off".
I do a adb reboot bootloader and i get us fast boot up top it says s-on but if i reboot to the os i still have root access for instance in titanium backup or Rom manager of that helps any

Mytouch 4g

I know this isn't the right place, but I am new, so I can't post where needed. A few months ago I watched a YouTube video and rooted my phone and put CM7 Rom on it. I guess the video didn't do the backup part and since then I have lost all other back up options besides one I created last month. Is there anyway I can get my phone back to the original mytouch 4g before ginger bread? I used the gfree method, but as stated I can't restore before that because a backup was not done before the cm7 flash

Yes you can post where needed. New members can post in General and Q&A forums. You probably tried to post this in the Development forum...which was the WRONG forum, and indicates why we have the 10 post rule in place
So I've moved it to where you should have posted it.

just flash the stock PD15IMG.zip file in bootloader.
PD15IMG.zip Android 2.2.1 Froyo
follow these instructions:
1) reboot to bootloader/hboot using power + volume DOWN buttons
2) bootloader will find the file
3) follow the onscreen instructions to flash it.
4) hit the thanks button.

There is an app on market called quick boot that you could try. Hope it doesn't boot into fastboot too. Otherwise just try to flash an unrooted stock rom, that might work for what you need.

I use an app called Widgetsoid, which includes the ability to make a widget that can reboot your phone, Can be set up so that you choose how to reboot (Recovery, Power off, etc).
Requires SU access to reboot with the widget, and please be aware that when I had a couple different roms, the widget simply failed to reboot at all -- for example it works fine when I'm running Darkside Sense 4.0, failed to work at all on meXdroidMod Ghost Chili's rom.
Hope this might help ya out
I found an app called button remapper thanks to I forgot who.
It will remap power,but...
It will not work to turn the phone on,and once you use it to get to recovery, you will need the power button to scroll through,so you'd still be in trouble if its completely broke.
Pm me and I could send you the file when I'm on the computer tonight.
If you want to try.
Or search for button remapper on xda.I don't think its in the market.

Can't you use the trackpad in recovery to navigate?

Oh come on.
How about if you go to install zip from sdcard,or wipe/reset,did I miss something where you can use the trackpad to go back, when there is no go back option?or like I was saying, you would need to hit that trusty power button to ho back.
I don't know,I might have missed it after flashing about 500times.
But pretty sure I use the power button all the time to go back after wiping data, then cache, power to ho back, wipe dalvik, power to go back, install zip from sdcard, power to go back, then reboot system.
Have I been doing it wrong?
Btw,this android keypad on tdj's 7.2 just fast.whoohoo.

You do realize there's an edit button, right? And power button does not function as a back key (or at least never has for me..

Getting a bit sidetracked here, I am trying to revert to stock ROM and cannot because the Power button is broken on this piece of crap and I cannot get to bootloader.
• adb reboot bootloader and that sends me into FASTBOOT, NOT bootloader and does not load image
• no option in Settings > Power or Settings > Applications to disable fastboot (I have gingerbread)
• using CWM recovered > Install zip from file does not work
Can anyone advise a way to revert to stock image without HBOOT, that actually works and does not require the power button?
P.S. this whole thing has really made be disenchanted with the mess that is android right now. Since it seems that it really android is not open or owned by google. Instead owned by the carriers. I should not feel like a criminal for wanting a basic android phone. Makes me almost want to scrap and get an iPhone.
Firstly, its not the Android OS that's the problem. Its your broken ass phone so calm down. If your thinking Android is not open, go ahead and get an iPhone and you'll see what a not open OS is really like.
Secondly...
I read you have Clockwork recovery installed. Flashing this image through Clockwork will at least make it look stock. It is said you will lose root but probably keep S-ON.

@ajm
Why are you trying to revert to stock if you don't mind me asking? Are u sending it to HTC for them to fix it? They wont care if your rooted they will just wipe your phone and put in the mysense gingerbread rom. I highly advise u to contact HTC and check your warranty. I sent in NY CM7 mt4g and they fixed the power button for free.

Sending it to t-mobile, not HTC for return (they already sent replacement); I thought they would mind??

Thanks, frustrated is all. Taking it out on Android OS, but really peeved at GOOG
- for having caved into the carriers by letting them bastardize the OS with their mods, forcing me to feel like criminal in modding and jumping through hoops to get a vastly better experience
- for not outbidding verizion on that wireless spectrum and becoming a carrier themselves
Was original N1 owner (first week) and will prob sqitch to galaxy nexus (as soon as they get on more carriers)
Thanks on the suggestions, tried to reflash through CWM several times and keeps giving me installation aborted.. will download again (in case is corrupted) and try again; Interesting other suggestion, will take a look at, but not much time, have to send back replacement tomor
Thx again
You can also try this. It is a nandroid restore somebody made. It seems a bit more involved because it looks like you need to use an older version of clockwork recovery. If I am correct you can find an older version of the recovery and flash it through rom manager, but dont quote me on that one.

When I had a MT4G and the EMMC chip died I hooked the phone to a 12 volt battery and fried it. I then called and told them I plugged the phone in to charge one night and the next morning it would not power on. They replaced it no questions asked and I never heard anything about it again.
My mom's power button went out as well. Tmo and HTC flat out refused a replacement MT4G, Saying it was a "known issue". I called them about 10 times total about this problem. They just want to sell me another phone. Full price. Since i've called them so many times they wont even do a Insurance claim.
If this is a "known problem" why the f isn't it being taken care of properly?
Has anyone else had this problem with customer service?
