That's great and all but we're on Sprint, remember? I expect to have this by mid-February/March.
(sorry, couldn't resist)
Good news. Can't wait to see it. Would love to just use stock TW 3.0 to speed up my phone (ADW slows it down a bit.)
Considering GingerBread is supposed to drop next week some time....this really kind of blows. We really need a good CM6 then 7!
I can't remember exactly but I think Hero didn't get the 2.1 update until after code dropped for FroYo...Sucks being a version behind. And considering track record its the only OS Update we will see official. I highly doubt we will actually get GingerBread from Samsung/Sprint.

I agree. Everyone getting their hopes up for Gingerbread for the Galaxy S phones, I think are setting themselves up for a big let down. I haven't seen any phone (besides Droid and N1) receive more than 1 official update. And considering Samsung's update history, I definitely don't see them supporting this phone beyond 2.2

Not just tablets - Just better than 2.1 was with large screens (over 4.5 inchs).
GingerBread should add native video calling, a new UI, and a few other surprises.
And suspected release of Google Music.
Hopefully the ball keeps rolling until it gets to Sprint. Post any rumors you hear on this thread so we can keep track of this "gradual" rollout.
I agree that its unlikely we will get anything after 2.2...it seems like every Android I buy this happens to me lol. Oh well

I believe the reports for gingerbread are 4th quarter of 2010. That's probably why everyone thinks it's coming soon. Other gingerbread info was from the last IO (they showed the music player streaming music from cloud) and just general quotes from google engineers about trying to get rid of carrier skins and what not.
Having said all that, didn't they just hire that webOS designer a few months ago? He's supposedly the lead designer for gingerbread, so could it really be coming in q4?
As for support, i think it'll be awhile but it will be supported. I feel like sammy has to support the galaxy line at this point w/ their 5 million handsets sold and the imminent galaxy tab (which they already stated will have gingerbread at some point). This is my first sammy phone and it's pretty apparent people have gotten burned by them in the past, but it would be a customer relations nightmare if they did this w/ the galaxy line.

Gingerbread supports large screens which suppose to go on tablet pads...I dunno where they get the idea that its gonna come out for phones
Maybe it will be a good reason to upgrade galaxy s phones because of the name similarities, now whether they have any similar parts inside I doubt but kind of gives us some of that 'hope' it will come out for phones also.
They have a development center here in Irvine, ca..... I will mission impossible into the facility and retrieve the release date in the laser protected vault room.

Actually it will be released with phones that have a 1Ghz Processing chip and at least 3.5 inch screen or larger.
Google themselves stated that gingerbread will require ATLEAST the N1's specs bare minimum. I read that a LOOOOOONG time ago though so idk...
But ayways, sammys rep for the tab mentioned honeycomb...
What if honeycomb is the start for android tablet OS and gingerbread is the continuation for the phone os?
I mean, tink about it...honeycomb isn't a sweet snack...atleast one that I know of...

Honeycomb is both a delicious treat as well as a continuation of the alphabetical nomenclature Google has chosen for their OS's. If they were going to branch off and make a separate lineage for tablets alone, I doubt they would interrupt their alphabetical naming scheme for phone based OS' to do it.

Mmmmm honeycomb is delicious! I got a chunk of white chocolate covered honeycomb from a local confection shop and it was DELICIOUS.
But I agree.... I dont honestly believe that any of the Galaxy phones will get anything past 2.2.
By the time 2.2 is FINALLY pushed to all the galaxys, new and better phones will be out.
I've never seen ANY android that had more than 1 system upgrade that wasn't a leaked developer made upgrade.
posted from a EPIC4G.
This isn't a rant or anything, or I won't try to make it one. But I just came across on Android Central that the Droid is getting 2.2.1.
Now this is just so depressing already that we have a phone that's been out for about 5 months now and haven't seen Froyo (only in Unoffical leaked builds). The Droid has been out far longer, I know that. But Samsung is really dragging their feet. Froyo offically, when it comes out, better knock our ****ing socks off or it was a waste of time to wait for them to deliver.
I'm just saying, this just makes Samsung look that much worse.

I didn't mean to bash or knock it. There's nothing wrong with the builds, it'd be nice to have an official build though I guess..
Okay, but is it not ironic you started your non-rant post stating that the Droid was getting 2.1.1 and how it looks bad for Samsung, but you completely ignored the fact it ALSO was a leaked build?

There's really no debate that Samsung is WAY behind here. Yes. the Droid has been out way longer, but the Incredible and Droid X haven't and they've gotten Froyo a long time ago. Incredible got it around 8/30 and X around 9/21.
Assuming that Samsung does get it out this year, that puts them anywhere from 2-4 months behind the competition, depending on when they do finally release it.
That's really bad. Sure they didn't promise 2.2 at any particular time, but that doesn't mean I don't factor it in when making my next phone purchase. I hope everyone does. If not, it'll give the manufactures even more reason to withhold updates in the future and try to push new phones instead.
Just heard from Cyanogen's twitter that CM6 is finished for the G2. I'm sure the new my touch isn't far behind.

Yeah, but you seem to be ignoring the fact that the Droid already HAS an official Froyo, and the leaked build is a second generation update.
The Vibrant does NOT have an official build, and the way it's going, the Droid X may have Gingerbread before we get an official Froyo build.
How can you even begin to defend Samsung?
Yes, it is "just" another Froyo post. +1 Ignore!

Geez, people, of course Samsung is going to be behind. Motorola's and HTC's phones all have the same OMAP and Snapdragon cores they've used from the first Droid and Nexus One. No wonder they've all gone to Froyo before Samsung.
How many phones used the Hummingbird before the Galaxy S line? None. But I'll bet you that future updates will come faster now they've got Froyo figured out.

Designing the chip and modifying the software to work with the hardware are two different things. Just because you know the hardware, doesn't mean it's easy to make the software work with it nicely.
Only thing wrong with these threads is they are always full of hearsay. Rarely anyone states fact, just opinion. Who says sammy is holding it back? The leak came from tmo right? this pessimistic view is what makes ppl always have that "omg I have froyo & I hate it, its not perfect.... I want gingerbread" mentality. Life lesson, you'll never be happy with this attitude.
I, myself, try to look at the recent events of the "rumoured nexus s" that engadget posted pics. If this does happen to grace the GS community think of how fast, far, & easily we may make it to 2.3! Im no tech & I may be way off, but id like to think that this would give us the OPEN "NEXUS" development base we'd need to achieve that level of vanilla android base w/ drivers, code & hopefully working gps ;j (minus the new chipset, obviously).
Just be glad that we do have devs who do what they can & hope that sammy doesn't do anything else to screw us. I will be hoping (but not holding my breathe) for a nexus $ gingerbread port.

Now thats fun!

How come none of the people that rant about not having an official Froyo release remember that 1. we have they best hardware of any phone out, I can't recall how many times I've heard owners of other phones complain that they've run out of room for their apps because they only have 2gb internal storage, and 2. this site is XDA Developers not XDA stock software release news. If you want to rant about the official release go over to the T-Mobile or Samsung forums and do it.

He is not only new to XDA, he is new to the Fascinate area. Maybe he should have searched first, but perhaps just saying no, see this thread, would have been a bit nicer.
Not to offend my fellow Fascinate users, but if I were buying soon and wanted Froyo, I would want someone to tell me to either suck it up, or hold out for something else.
Being a pessimist, I'd say that updates to this phone are being sat upon for commercial reasons. To sell more devices at the right timing. But that is likely bitterness for naively convincing myself that there'd be a major patch in November.
Being the eternal optimist that I am, HTC is due for a new android phone. They are blowing our the old incredibles, free in some cases. With luck whatever it is will launch in two months. It would undoubtedly have a more current OS than 2.1.
However, Eclair is in fact pretty nice. The biggest thing that would change for me is the ability to run a handful of updated apps.
Bottom line, no need to take it out on the new guy.
Swyped on my repeatedly flashed i500.04 using XDA App
way to turn a new guys question into a useless thread.
all variations of the galaxy devices have received updates to froyo in various parts of the world, however no galaxy device has seen the update yet in the USA. The majority of creditable websites list the fascinate, along with the other galaxy variants as a device very likely to receive the froyo update. However, nobody knows when that will be, for a long time everyone thought by the end of november, now they think by the end of december. Personally I would say youll probably see something by march, but thats just my own personal speculation.
With that said, people are less likely to help you out if you dont search first, as you can see haha
Like most ppl are saying on the forums, I also think that the froyo update in the usa is always delayed because of the carriers customization and bloatwares. And knowing verizon, we're probably going to be the last one to get the phone as we were also the last to get the phone.

Verizon is slow to test, they always have been, nothing new. They're gonna load their crap on it, you can bet on that (although there are rumors flying that 2.2 will debing the phone), but they gotta get it tested ok first.
I could see commercial reasons, in that they don't want to compete with the Droid line during the holiday season, being valid. They might have a better deal in place with the Droid branded phones as opposed to the non droid ones.
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/03/24/samsung-mesmerize-android-2-2-update-now-available/
I check back here and poke through Google News 'Samsung Fascinate' searches pretty much daily and at this point, I'm pretty sure we're one of, if not THE last Galaxy S phone, to be on 2.1. At this point, we just have to laugh about it, right? Then I read articles like this and it makes me remember the angry "WTF " feeling... but what's the point in being pissed off. It'll get here when it gets here, right?
We don't need Verizon anymore. The Mesmerize's code is compatible enough with the Fasicnate that we don't need an official release... plus, their source is already out. Hell, we've been using their leaked kernels for a while now (EB16 and EC10 are both mez kernels).

Well, not to lessen the Continuum state, but you guys do have that funky Ticker thing with all of it's own settings I can actually understand something like that holding up the Verizon/Samsung ability to push out an update. But the Fascinate?
It's just mind-blowing that two multi-billion dollar companies are such a miserable failure in this department. The Froyo SDK came out over 10 months ago. Some team, some where, should've lost their jobs ages ago and been replaced with competent individuals.
Ok, back to laughing
True.. its gotten to the point of being so ridiculous that I really do almost laugh out loud at the whole thing these days. Still though I do feel extremely frustrated at the fact that the two big companies involved just seem to refuse to give a straight answer regarding an update - if an update is coming out for sure.. ETA.. status.. etc.. That part of it just drives me crazy.
Very true. I am waiting and hoping for ASOP or MIUI to be fully functional now.
So why the hell did Samsung drop this phone, essentially, and all the other phones are fine? This is a great phone.

EB01 Superclean 2.4

If you didn't notice the froyo versions that leaked have all had their own issues and caveats. Knowing Verizon, they would never allow a release of flawed software so I refuse to be angry about the lack of an official release. Those of us knowledgeable enough and willing to tolerate have been using it for months and with Kaos, Adryn, JT and our other AMAZING Fascinate devs we will have GB, MIUI and AOSP as well as all the wicked kernels we could possibly want ahead of anything we would ever get from sammy. I'm not one to correct, but wasn't the next to last official VZW release the one with the 911 puzzle lock bug? VZW has always been a pain in the butt for updates, but never, NEVER, this nad. IMO, this all falls on Samsung and their incompetence. I get done what I need done just fine from my SC 2.9.2 and stopped waiting for anything official a long time ago. All owning the fascinatehad done is solidify the fact that Sammy won't get another dime of mine. What actually makes me laugh is the BS that Samsung PR puts on here to attempt to make users happy.
From what I understand, Samsung has already released the update to Verizon, but it didn't have Bing integrated...so then Verizon's one guy in some back room closet has to integrate Bing before they can release it. Of course, any dev on here could do that in a day....
I wouldn't go stock if they did release it. I am digging Launcher Pro on SC 2.9.2 Voodoo. I have my wifi hotspot and google and NO VZW crap. Everything on my phone is working better than before and I have no lag, waits or FC. I honestly don't mind the UI of touchwiz but the implementation is piss poor in the quality department and I don't expect that to change with the next rev. I'm a happy man going to save a few duckets for Adryn he is a deserving soul.
Yep I'm with Joey - at this point even if they do come out with an official release, I dont think I could go back to a stock 'bloat rom' after trying out a rooted phone with a fast cool SC-Voodoo setup developed here by the dev community. AWESOME!
running DR v3 voodoo
EC10v
launcher pro plus
loaded the apk's that i like
battery life is good / to GREAT
Samsung / Verizon = i will be voting with my money when it comes time to upgrading my phone & service
because of leaks i am currently happy with my Fascinate
Imo I would say this definetly falls on samsung and verizon not giving the ok on an update that would have its own issues. Ive never been a fan of samsungs touch wiz interface, but I think this is a really good example of phone makers tweaks on android really effecting users getting to experience there devices as they should. Sammy has always been little slow on updates to there phones. Love there displays and there TVs are the best. I just wish they would pay as much attention to devices already launched as they do pushing out new devices. Seeing that droid x is on the verge of getting gingerbread it makes me sick thinking that fascinate is still on froyo. I keep.secretly hoping that thsy will surprise us all and just skip froyo with the vzw update and push out gingerbread for it. If they do.end up putting a froyo update out for the fascinate I guess a gingerbread update would be out of the question because who knows how lonh that would take
Samsung , has a bunch of bs programers, and poor project management. If our devs out code theirs, why haven't they been hired? Because, they'd have to eat humble pie. My guess, is that if you paid close enough attention, you find that samsung borrowed quite a bit of code from our devs. Why else would they "leak" code? They are having problems solving their own, self made hacks of miss placed code and purpose built convolutedness, so why not get someone else to fix it for free.

So have been thinking. As we did a pretty good #NeverAgain campaign way back to get Froyo to our Vibrants we could try a new approach.
We may be waiting for Samsung and T-mobile to come out with Gingerbread for the our Vibrants. I don't know what the chances for this is. But if they are planning on retiring the Vibrant (or already have) than there shouldn't be anything that keeps Samsung from releasing the sourcecode for the Vibrant. The good press that Samsung would get by releasing the source code (and I'm talking about the kernel) for the Vibrant, can be tremendous. If they are not planning on using it, than great if they release the source. If they do plan on releasing it, but also hand it over to the developers like the CM team, how much more grateful will we be as their power user group.
Keeping on the developers good side should be important for Samsung and the other manufacturers, as that also leads to a very happy power user group. Which in turn refers their products to their friends and families.
So just checking to see what the interest would be for us people that are left with the Vibrant would be involved in making a campaign like this to succeed?

I agree. The first campaign worked because it was something new and half way legitimate. If they are working on GB for us, a year after release, I don't think we have much ground to complain. Not that you can't, feel free, but now people are starting to hit the down hill slope of looking forward to their next upgrade.
Just my opinion.
Edit: I am 'tarded
The Vibrant is powerful enough to maintain a long lifespan. There really are only about 2 phones I'd consider a strong enough upgrade to even consider jumping ship.
Ice Cream Sandwich isn't far away. Since it's meant to work on all devices (phones, tablets, pc's, etc)... I really hope drivers aren't the reason I can't use this phone for long time to come..

I know we can't ask for the update. Don't really care. But we know they are sitting on the code and if they are not planning on giving us GB at least they could give us the code. Especially the kernel so that CM can get a perfectly working CM7 for the Vibrant.

The problem is that if it's not finished (which is very likely) and we use the code a lot of misinformed people will complain about how we were given buggy code. Then the conspiracy theorists will assume that Samsung sabotaged the code just to get people to hate their phones and want to buy a new one.
All of this will go back to Samsung and they will be labeled as bad for not knowing how to program, or hurting development, or being evil, or ...
Perfect world they could just make all their code transparent for us all to see as soon as it happens, but they would rather be like every other company and hold out on giving out source until they feel it is ready than risk being hurt by trying to help out.
If the code was finished they would be pushing for an update. I doubt they have anything complete for the vibrant.
