As previously reported, we all know that the Google Nexus One will be the first to get the Android 2.2 update OTA. Our guess was that Motorola Droid and HTC Incredible would be next but now new information has come to light that shows another contender.Bill from Android Forum has just informed us that his contact at Sprint has revealed that the HTC Evo 4G will be second to receive the Android 2.2 update. So basically Sprint will be rolling out the update in the same month of the Evo 4G's release ( release date rumored to be Labor day or after speculations that the HTC Evo 4G will come with 5GB to 8GB ROM OZCAR will be attending the Google I/O event this year and will report back on Android 2.2's ong list of goodies. At the moment, we know that it includes Flash support and will free up additional RAM. Furthermore there is now news that since Google bought BumpTop, Android 2.2 could even bring your phone a 3D home screen!

Credible source, or random speculation?
What do Nexus owner's have now? Sexiness, developer support? We still get Froyo first - but not as "first" as people thought.
I'm trying to figure out why you're upset? Because EVO is going to get 2.2?
Exactly what OS would you propose the EVO get? Are all devices supposed to sit at 2.1 and the Nexus only get upgrades?
The Nexus gets it first, I'm thrilled, and it's all a Nexus owner can hope for.
I'm glad the EVO will launch with 2.2. I want to see Android do well, HTC too.
Oh, and what do I have now? The best mobile device I've ever owned, that's what.

I'm not upset lol, I included the last part in order to cause frustration among people who thought the Nexus was going to get updated months before the Incredible, Evo, and other Android devices. Google is slowly stopping fragmentation though, and we only know that the Evo is possibly getting it so soon.
In order to start conversation, you must include controversial, irritable, or suspicious questions. People start to talk then..
People were using Froyo coming to us quickly as an excuse to not get the Incredible, or Evo - that can't be used for long.
very sad.... rooted nexus one can't get update for froyo even if u revert back to original stock rom ... right ?? i am very sad lol

dont be sad because even though you wont get the actual OTA someone who did might be kind enough to post it. root or not rooted users will both end up with the update. the only difference will be how you get it.
Nah, the stock 2.2 rom may very well be available to flash before the unmodded guys get the ota. You're not going to miss out on anything so no worries.
XDA will see it before EVO
A) No, ozcarguide is NOT a credible source. I have my news Widget set to check for "Android" and ozcarguide often pops up with news posts that are totally garbage.
Basic rule of thumb: don't trust lesser-known websites that post articles and don't have comments. If they don't have comments, that means the site isn't popular enough and may just be filled with BS in order to get page views. Also, don't trust news "articles" that are 2-3 paragraphs long.
B) I too don't understand why you're upset. Android has been absolutely blasted by every news source on the internet for fragmentation issues.
Google's goal is now (or should be to quiet people down) to have every SINGLE device running 2.2 the day it's released.
C) Stock Android devices will get 2.2 working MUCH earlier than Sense UI devices. Even if the article is true (which I'm betting it's not), it only says the Evo 4G will receive 2.2 "second". Nowhere does it give a specific time frame aside from "the same month" it's released.
2.2 could come out June 1st for the N1 and hit the Evo on June 30th. And remember, the June release for the Evo is still rumor at best.
D) Like galaxys posted, the N1 will be running 2.2 within minutes of it being released (or leaked)

You did notice I said I wasn't upset it like the third post?
I know that Stock Google Experience devices (as I have started calling then instead of Vanilla) will get Android first, that is obvious.. it kinda irritates me when people explain things that are already blatantly obvious to me in the first place, I honestly don't know why I posted this myself considering how sad the site looks.
Though, if it was true (which I think was my point), then the Nexus having Froyo quicker than other devices won't matter regardless since they will be getting it hypothetically in the same time frame. Even if we get it a few weeks earlier than everyone else, I wanted to make it known that the Nexus will not be necessarily the only "next gen" Android device that will feature Froyo in a timely manner. Putting statements such as "I will be laughing at you as you're waiting months for the Incredible to be finally updated" to shame. Which I have heard, here as well, trying to make it as if he Nexus is better the other Android devices because it can get updates more quickly. This is all hypothetical of course.

guys, cant believe you never checked this Sticky Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614850
I don't understand why people get upset when more devices come out. my nexus is just as solidly built and beautiful looking no matter what comes out next. incredible? looks worse, same specs. this is Google's phone until Google releases the next "Google phone", and that isn't the evo or incredible or desire. nexus one is the top dog, flagship phone until the nexus 2 is released. so enjoy your phone in the present!
Its an operating system update on a mobile phone. No one is getting laid because they got froyo first. Supermodels will not fall all over themselves when you show them your about screen. If others else gets it soon or at the same time, I say more power to them.

Not a reliable source and just speculation. I would say Droid gets 2.2 same time as N1 since Google is using both as dev phones and they both run stock.
I was confused as to why you said that in the OP, and then later on said otherwise.

That evo is taking that long to launch ?? Good lord.
Im glad Android experiences will be similar across all devices. Stupid sense UI slowing things down for other phones.
Only thing to be excited about is flash though. Ram and Colorballs etc is already on custom ROMS. I did like the "always update" on market apps.

Yeah but those of us who haven't rooted yet get lots of goodies. Colorball will be new for me
I personally will not use the always update option. Some of my apps work perfect and I've been burned before by updating and it either breaking the app, or it takes a feature I love away. Now I backup using astro and wait to see what the update entails.
Samsung should take notes from Motorola.
The Droid 2 is breaking records in sales, mostly due to
marketing the Android 2.2 software and UI. Samsung has to hurry and get Froyo to the masses of Galaxy S owners and sell the hell out of it.
They have to keep up with the Jonses in order to sell these phones.
I think T-Mobile should step in and push this with their partners and have a huge re-launch of the phone. The vibrant is a great phone It just needs better marketing and cutting edge UI.
What do you think?
That's why it's called Samsung and T-mobile.
I'm thinking Samsung will announce something at IFA, which starts September 2nd. Their twitter keeps saying they're making a lot of big announcements. I'm hoping to get a definitive date for froyo then or at very least, the GPS fix.
Yeah I definetly agree with you. These Galaxy S phones have the hardware, but not the killer software to match it.
I was set on buying an iPhone, because I had no clue a phone like this even existed on my network.
But Samsung is by no means stupid and have been making some really indicative suggestions that we will be seeing some big changes in software in the next couple of months.
I'm more than sure that we will get Froyo, GPS fixes, and more by the end of September.
WHAT?!?!
FIRST:
the X doesn't have froyo. They have a leaked version with piss poor benchmarks.
SECOND:
the galaxy is always having a commercial on tv.
Their also selling very well.
He's referring to the "Droid 2", not the "Droid X."
I think that us techno gadget geeks here on xda certainly care about Froyo. But out of all the people I know that are in the market for a new smart phone, or actually have android phones, they don't care about froyo, or even really know what that is if you mentioned it. I think the masses care about getting on facebook and taking a picture with their phone, etc... I think the silly things like having avatar on it are a bigger selling point to the masses compared to which version of android it has on it.

Ha. Same here. People at work ask me questions about my "droid phone". My co-worker said she almost bought a droid the other day. I asked her which one and she said, "you know, the droid phone," as if there's only one. I've explained to them before what android is but it clearly doesn't sink in. I think its safe to say most people that aren't tech nerds are clueless. Even my iphone sporting friends don't know what Android is.
Pretty much they only care can about the surface stuff really. My brother in law has a news girlfriend who had a hero and didn't even know about the market on it at all. She didn't even know it was android.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yea I will have to agree that the mainstream consumer isn't going to know what version of android they're running/if they have an android phone/care about updates. All they're going to see is the big screen and avatar on the vibrant and want to buy it. The tmobile store demos has a little sign listing the specs like 1ghz processor but a good mass of people won't have a clue what that even means.
Hopefully froyo comes in September because I decided to not go the rooting route this time and just patiently wait it out. I would be annoyed if they waited until the fascinate came out to release froyo.
Where do you see the Droid 2 is breaking sales records? Have you seen the numbers for Galaxy S phones? They expect to sell 10 MILLION over the next 12 months. That's more than iPhone 4 by itself. Samsung has got the Galaxy S on pretty much every provider in every country, I would have to call that pretty damned good marketing. The fact that a few hundred or every a few thousand people are chomping at the bit for Froyo doesn't even begin to move the needle enough for them to even care. The fact that they are moving forward and will be pushing updates and Froyo soon enough means that all the gearheads like us will be recommending the phone to everyone we know.
Missing the boat? I beg to differ, I would say they built the damned boat this year and are fully in charge of its direction.
I really don't understand how the OP says that Samsung is missing the boat with Froyo. They already announced that it will be released in the early part of Sep. A few extra weeks won't KILL YOU!

No, it won't kill us, but it will make me think about getting another Samsung.
If Samsung wants to add TouchWiz on their phones, then they should be prepared to react quickly when a new OS upgrade arrives. They've certainly had enough time before the Froyo original announcement.
The fact that they are lagging behind with what is supposed to be their flagship device, makes me nervous about how long it will take for the upgrade to OS 3.0, which will be a much more significant upgrade.

They just launched the Fascinate, and now they have their phone on all carriers. Sure, it would have been great to have Froyo by now, or launch the Fascinate with Froyo, but I don't think they'd want to fragment their US Galaxy S so much. I'm sure it will come, especially now that all the phones are out. I have a feeling they are going to develop Froyo for all the Galaxy's at the same time. Whether the carriers decide to push out Froyo as soon as it's ready is another question.

Seriously I can understand peoples frustrations but venting on the forum isn't going to change a thing. The OTA for Froyo is speculated to be released in September and its still September isn't it? Not to be an ass but, why don't you use the advanced version so we can see the CPU gain and not just the lagfix gain. The lagfix makes some things faster and other things slower...the original lagfix that is. I haven't used the voodoo one, so I can't comment on it. I know there is a CPU gain on yours as the most I've seen just with lagfix is in the 2200's. So I assume you have a different rom and/or OC'ing.

2. the galaxy s line does have hacked froyo on it, just look through the forums
3. idc about this comment
anyway, we'll get froyo soon enough, look at the evidence, it's been confirmed already, maybe not for a specific one in a specific country, but hey, once one country is out, others follow quick, besides, the galaxy tab, which is basically the same hardware as the galaxy s, runs froyo, it's probably the bug fixes thats taking them a while, be patient and you'll get it
edit: forgot to add, you can use skyfire, you got a galaxy s, skyfire will not lag at all, its a browser that has full flash capabilities, and actually the video button thing is better than having youtube playing a video straight out, at least you can control it that way, but yea, skyfire, look in tha market
So I was thinking.....
With all the Nexus S rumors floating around I ad a thought. Why would Samsung put much effort into 2.2 when 2.3 is coming soon. Maybe we will skip over 2.2. Also I am hoping a Nexus S will allow us have have a good shot at getting a stock Android build or a stable cyanogenmod version because it will be based on Samsung hardware.
One can only hope, or maybe me thinking is not such a good thing after all.

Samsung's efforts are complete for the most part, regarding 2.2. They have released it to (all or most, no confirmation) Galaxy S carriers. It is now up to the carriers to accept (as has been done by several) or reject (which is usually the case with VZW).
We've, of course, gotten zero verification that VZW has received anything, but based purely on the fact that it is already *out* on other SGS devices, one can logically assume VZW is the one holding the process up at this point...again, as usual.
Sounds like buisness as usual for VZW. Reminds me of my good old BlackBerry storm.
the nexus S will likely be a much a different phone while being very similar, it will likely not use RFS filesystem as it is garbage, and it will be a GSM model, while one would question why put out froyo so late in the game to your flagship, what makes you think they could have gingerbread ready if froyo still isn't ready, im primly on the same boat as everyone else and am getting tired of being jerked around while older, slower, less selling phones receive an update that we can't even get a date on.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Why are people so upset about the Froyo delay? The Motorola Backflip that came out in March just got updated to 2.1. The Fascinate was released 2 months ago and shipped with what the Backflip was just upgraded to. It would be nice to have Froyo on the Fascinate, but is it really that big of a difference between 2.1 and 2.2 that people can't just be patient and wait for it?
I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think an upgrade from 2.1 to 2.3 can be done while completely skipping over 2.2. Not an OTA at least.
Actually most people think that if Nexus S is indeed Galaxy S that means that all Galaxy S will benefit, this is not true. Even if all other Galaxy S version receive 2.3 and fascinate doesn't, we can't do anything about 2.3 because the 2.3 kernal isn't here. OS and kernal are two different things. We've had OS sources for the longest time because it is released by Google, that doesn't mean anything if we don't have the working kernal. Devs tried to build 2.1 kernal from the ground in the past with Droid Milestone(?) but that was hell and no one would even try to do that ever again.
So stop with Nexus S = Galaxy S. Even if that is true, unless it is exactly same as Fascinate, we won't benefit anything from that, just like we can't benefit from Internation version, Vibrant, Epic 4G, and Captivate Galaxy S. We need specific "Fascinate" kernal code.
You are exactly right. We couldnt have gingerbread for the exact same reason we can't have froyo now. Think about. I think the fascinate is doomed. Thank God for our good devs, they can keep us up to date, til LTE, At which point, im out!!!

Im probably the most impatient guy around here , i mean the ONLY reason i care at all about it is so development picks up on it . I could care less about playing videos in a browser without an app haha .
I know there is a little more than flash .But there isnt really anything WRONG with 2.1 . Just lack of development ... and even with that said , new kernals are popping up , new roms ,etc . I think this phone is far from dead. i just think we are really impatient haha .
im def being pessimistic but i'm just getting flashbacks of having a blackberry tour last year and being on crackberry forums like wheres our update? and the tour being like the redheaded step child of verizons phones and i jus got deja vu w/ this delayed 2.2 situation...
and then its like gingerbread is coming out now, so there will b phones on 2.3 while we JUST get 2.2.... how long is it gonna take us to get 2.3. im fairly positive it won't b as timely as it should... so i kinda feel doomed lol... i love this phone but dam
while it may have only been two months since this phone came out froyo has been out since may 19, 2010 to be exact. That puts us at six no that behind the current OS, which In a week or 2 will be the old one. However, with that said, I think there are some things in store for everyone that will make this phone MUCH more enjoyable and hopefully we can get it soon.

I think that we are spoiled users, if we look to the dark side, the iPhone gets a mayor update about once a year, we have to chill out a bit and enjoy what we have now

I had froyo on my droid it really brought nothen major to the table imo. Im fine with current setup but i just want the fixes/patches for bugs and im happy. Main being gps and button backlights.

I have to agree. I remember going through this when I had my Droid and being unimpressed with 2.2. Other than Flash, which for me isn't even a huge deal anyway, I didn't see what all the fuss was about.
I definitely am DYING for a GPS fix though. As for backlights, not sure what's wrong with them unless you're talking about how long they stay on but I thought that there is already a mod for that anyway, no?

Other than flash and Google making applications not work on our phone I am totally happy. (flame suit) If it wasn't for those things I would be happy if we never got another update.
I am using JT's non- voodoo kernel and system.

I am taking about the app's that do not work on 2.1 period, not specifically the Fascinate. Like "Voice Actions for Android", new gmail app, etc.

i agree with u except fo the fact that, A. anyone with an iOS developer acct get the OS way in advance. B. when they release an OS update all their stuff gets it.
Canadas Fascinate isn't getting Froyo till January. So let's not get hopes up folkes. I don't see officisl froyo coming this month unless its a leak or a port of some sort.
Anyone ready to jump ship?
I've only had this Epic for almost a month and am very satisfied with it so far. But its getting pretty old looking on xda everyday to see someone new complaining about not having Froyo. You got what you paid for people, you bought a epic with 2.1 eclair on it, do you buy windows xp and then when windows 7 comes out you complain they won't upgrade you for free? There will always be something better and something new out there or up and coming you can't expect companies to sit there and keep working on things of the past they have to make money as well and they have to compete with each other and try to stay on top. I'm not saying I don't think they shouldn't release it for us I'm just saying you realy can't blame them for moving on with other phones as well. And if you think 2.2 is gonna make your phone that much better then go get a vibrant from tmobile bc I put 2.2 on my girlfriends phone last week and it didn't do much of anything for it, its just software sure your battery is a little better or the system runs a little smoother your not changing what you physically have the hardware is what it is and you knew all of this before buying the phone and if you didn't then you had 30 days to do some research and return it to sprint.

Alright, I'll bite.
most of us did not buy our epic's having seen a forum full of people dissatisfied with samsung's ability to upgrade their phones. I for one bought my phone on launch day. August 31st 2010. It was a sunny day, there was a nice breeze. I was young without a care in the world. I saw a phone with very formidable hardware and better yet, a promise from samsung that the device would see 2.2 in the very "near" future.
Now I don't know what you paid for your phone, but I paid retail price plus tax. If I had known I was actually paying for an education about what it exactly it means to buy a samsung phone I would have looked elsewhere.
that being said, theres one thing I can't stand and that is people such as yourself who waited until after people bought the phone and realized that and official update in a timely fashion not likely, accepted that risk, and then come here to rub it in the face of those who care about things like kernel sources, and custom roms to tell us about how we should all be as smart as you with your divine phone selecting savvy. I can't say that I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself when I tell you sincerely to gtfo.
yours truly, cozmonot
Ok to someone like yourself I understand that you did not know what you were getting yourself into and I'm not trying to say that someone such as yourself that bought the phone right when it came out doesn't have a right to be mad. I never said I had waited to buy this phone for any reason its just when I see ppl on here that say they just got the phone and now are mad they don't have 2.2 yet its disturbing. I understand we need kernals and source to make better roms and things, I myself am running Nebula and have been since the first week of owning this phone, so as with the rest of you I myself would like it so my rom can be further upgraded. The main thing I was trying to get at is that complaining about how we don't have it isn't getting us it I did not mean disrespect for someone like yourself and I don't think I have any better taste for phones than the rest of us we all chose this phone for whatever reasons but I don't think anyone chose it bc it was going to have 2.2

I agree in that people complaining here doesn't really accomplish much. Apologies, I probably shouldn't reply to threads when I'm angry and tired.
I think we need to make our voice heard by sprint and samsung if we want things to actually happen, and complaining to people in the same position can't make things any better. just look at the vibrant owners who threatened a lawsuit and got the mainstream blogs to post about the vibrant not having froyo, didnt they get the update like a week later? I agree with what you said in your second post and I wish I had known about what I was getting myself into back in August when i signed on the dotted line.

Actually, I did. Also, because of the slide out keyboard. If I wanted a phone forever stuck with Eclair, I'd have kept my Moment.
EDIT: I am not stuck on Eclair, but there are people who don't know about rooting and custom ROMs.

I bought the phone because of the hardware and because it was stated that 2.2 would be coming soon. I don't understand how people like you can just accept that You have the phone with the best hardware specs on the market at the moment and not be pissed that it doesn't have 2.2. While I agree that coming on xda and starting multiple threads on if FroYo is out is not the most productive way of dealing with the problem, bending over and submitting that because you paid money for the device and knew that it had 2.1 on is just a cop out.
To answer your question on what does FroYo add, here is just a few.
- What about all of the people who spent $30 to $50 on official samsung docks and can't even use it to the fullest without FroYo. IT EVEN SAYS ON DAMN PACKAGING THAT FULL FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE UNLOCKED WITH THE 2.2 UPDATE.
- What about bluetooth voice dialing, JIT, flash, and the updated google apps that come with 2.2, not to mention the speed increase. The FroYo update for the Vibrant doesn't count in this case because everyone knows that update was rushed because of the lawsuit business, and that lead to a bugged release.
And if none of that convinces you, the fragmentation of the market is the best example I can give. Do you know how annoying it is to find an app that you know your phone has more than enough power to run, but it won't even show up in the market because it only works on FroYo and up? IT'S THE ****ING PITS DUDE. For example there is this game that some (ex-sony I think) devs called Lame Castle that I really want to play, but it won't work on galaxy s phones without FroYo. Look it up on the market with Epic, it won't even show up. Now go on appbrain and its there clear as day. There are numerous examples of this, but this is the one that affected me that most.
So when you say that we should have know better and should not be upset, all I can say is that I hope you continue to enjoy the anal that samsung and sprint have given you so far. There's a lot more to come.
It was my first Android. It was cool at first, but just wanted FroYo and refused to get the Evo because the screen sucks and no keyboard.

I would have to say my favorite part about what you said was when you said Froyo for vibrant was rushed and has bugs. Because that could be us, we could have a rushed crappy edition of froyo. I understand that it makes it better and we can't do somthings without but if your life won't go on because you can't play some game on your phone (unless somehow you've got a job doing mobile gaming) then it might be time to look at some new hobbies or just pay your way out of contract so you can go get a phone with froyo that will make you happy as a little kid in a candy shop. But it must not be that bad if your willing to wait it out and hope one day you will wake up and see an OTA.

you never [/rant]
Anyways android is a grey point right now as with your reference to XP you could pay to upgrade to vista/7 (driver / hardware supporting of course) where with android everything is kept under wraps so by the manufacturer until weeks or sometimes months after their "official" software is released and only then can some reverse engineer everything to get what they need to develop.
Hopefully the future of android can be like computer operating systems. Manufacturers only make drivers that way google can push out their own updates or at least give us the ability to do our own.

About the Vibrant, their is no excuse for that buggy release at such a late push date. The carriers have had FroYo since November and and have taken their own sweet time working on it. To add insult to injury, Every other carrier with a Galaxy S phone has pushed out FroYo since November. They even started getting 2.2.1 about two weeks ago. Even the number five carrier in the states, U.S. Cellular, has had FroYo out for its captivate out for about a month and a half now. And guess what? That update went off without a hitch. I also like how you were able to boil down my argument into the my statement about Lame Castle, which in my circles is very important because I'm going to school for that kind of thing, and Vibrant update which I would have even if I didn't have months of knowledge on the situation here and everywhere else that Galaxies are sold. You just get your phone and feel like preaching to me on how I should just take this ****. I bought this phone months ago knowing I would be with it for two years and expecting on Samsung to hold up to their statement of by the end of the year. Its a month into 2011 and still nothing. If you find your epic fine on 2.1, all power to you. But their are people with docks, people that want to make hands free calls while on the road, and people who just want full access to the market, who have all the right in the world to complain over this mess.
Note: Make multiple threads on XDA is NOT the way to go about it though people.

I decided to get THIS phone for the desired features AND the promise of 4G and 2.2 before the ed of the year. While you are entitled to your opinions, I certainly don't appreciate labeling and especially not when you do it from the safety of your keyboard. It just isn't called for.

I didnt read the majority of the posts, I apologize....just want to put in my two cents and I guarantee it'll still be on topic.
People here have the right to rant. They have the right to be angry. They bought a true high end Android phone and are still on 2.1. That's not right... I have an Evo and an Epic...and the difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is really just the Flash (I'm not including what Samsung through in there based off of the leaked roms. Because some of what they through in there was just polishing up the UI and stuff). And Flash isn't really that big of a deal, its just one of those things that is nice to have. But thats beside the point. It doesnt even matter if the only thing different between 2.2 and 2.1 was a damn ringtone...a high end Android phone should be updated. If you don't update these phones, then why would someone shell out extra money to buy another high end phone that will share the same exact features as a low end phone? True the High end will be faster, but it really needs to have something to separate itself from the low end phone and that something should be the fact that it will always be supported...
And this is the problem with Android and this is what makes me sick about it. Android is great...but dammit...they need to relax on these phones and focus on the ones that are out now. They just keep on taking our money, and its going to get to the point where no phones will be updated, they will just keep releasing phones with the new update. And they know people will straight up go buy the new phone just for that update, just to realize that it aint even good. I started with the Evo before the Epic and if I wouldve went from the Epic to the Evo just for 2.2, I wouldve been pissed the hell off. 2.2 is not worth it at all...well, lemme put it like this: 2.2 by itself is not worth it. Although it aint worth it, this high end phone should still have it. If the Evo has it...the Epic should have it. The Evo will probably get Gingerbread and that'll be a damn shame...it won't benefit from it at all...
I mean, when you look at this 2.2 update from different angles, you can see why people rant and get mad. They have the right to...now if we could just put all of it into one thread that would be a lot better than multiple threads...but its w/e.
Also, does anyone else think that nothing else will top Android but Android will "destroy" itself? Android has already destroyed itself with me, if the iPhone hits Sprint, I'm jumping ship.
