Unlocking baseband? May want to think twice.

I have just got off the phone with HTC since I am sending my nexus one in for repairs with a intermittent screen thing where there is faint flickering every so often. I asked them about the warranty and unlocked basebands. Once the baseband is unlocked there is no warranty on the phone then at all. Not even if a physical button is stuck trackball not working or anything. So once the baseband is unlocked you are on your own.
I have never had insurance on any of my phones before and I know I will probably unlock mine when i get it back but I would recomend, if you are with t-mobile to get their insurance on the device. Per asurions page at http://www.phoneclaim.com/t-mobile-program they are going to be covering the device. just a heads up for everyone.
Um yea.. I guess you didn't read the disclaimer before unlocking..? Lol..

Just called care to add insurance, specifically for the N1. Had them add it to my account memos. She wouldn't do it at first, and was going to transfer me to Asurion, but I had her conference them instead and they told her it was covered. Lo and behold, my N1 is now insured.

you mean the Bootloader.
Tehran sorry about that. I meant bootloader. I r dum LOL brain fart. And can't edit on nexus. I figured sure software's warranty but what would that have to do with a button not working and should be covered. But such is not the case. Makeing sure I get that insurance.
There may be precedent to fight this if htc, t-mobile, or google give any problems when trying to get warranty repair for hardware defects even after you've unlocked the baseband. Apple had to give in to repairing hardware problems for jailbreakers, unlockers, and people who never even started a contract with AT&T.
If there is no link between a user modification and a hardware defect, then I think it would be worth organizing and fighting a case.

Sending G1 in

Hello, sorry for this question, but i just recently switched from the ATT tilt 1 and got a G1 from my friend, but its severely messed up and i took it to a repairman, and he said he couldn't do anything about it. I was wondering if i could send it in to HTC or something since there is a 1 year warranty. I did it with my Samsung phone which i got from a friend, just wondering if it would work for this G1
Thank you
Depends on what was severely messed up about the device. If it was damage that your friend did, I doubt HTC would repair it for free. (Assuming it is still under warranty. You can call HTC to verify the warranty with the serial number.)
i baught ny g1 off ebay and it was cheap. the buyer said it had connectivity problems... i baught it and tested and it did iin fact have problems. i called
htc wondering the same thing if it had a warrantry or not. surprisingly or not it did... and i told there where i baught it and that i had it unlocked and rooted. they said as long as the void sticker isnt broken, water damage, or dropp damage, or custom roms installed the would fix it...which they did
Should be able to revert to stock and send it in then. That's good news for you.
thank you all! the problem is, lol it doesnt liek even start up, i dont really know how it works, but it vibrates and goes to a bright dark screen and just stays there. There was no physical damage and the sticker is still there, guess i can send it in! wooohoo

Dead pixel warranty?

This is depressing, out of nowhere this big ugly glaring green pixel is here and won't go away
I've only had this phone for 2 months (The AT and T build sucks by the way compared to T mobile, screen atleast)
Now I wanted to ask, ive unlocked the bootloader so technically no warranty, but as this is a hardware problem ...nothing due to unlocking would cause this right
nothing on CYanogen..nothing on set cpu (which installed just 2 days ago and started using , that's why I suspect it)
but its not like my phone was over heating
Any ideas...does anyone know how nice HTC Support will be over this..or am I stuck with this
Thanks
PS: Is there a way to relock the bootloader, that is get rid of that unlock logo at boot?

eesh sorry to hear that.
Your two options are...
1. Claim warranty exchange without telling them it's unlocked. I've read some cases of people getting away with this. My only concern with his is that I'm afraid someone at HTC will charge me for a motherboard replacement on the old phone once they find out it's unlocked. But again some people have gotten away with it.
2. Be honest and tell them it's unlocked...which is what I did BUT it was a very long battle with HTC to get my phone under warranty. They automatically will try to charge you $196 to replace the motherboard because of the unlocked bootloader. A new motherboard technically puts you back under warranty but at the cost of $196. I had to start a case with a better business bureau and after about a month of fighting on the phone on daily calls they finally sent me a new phone without even telling me they were. I guess their way of telling me to shut the hell up.
Unfortunately, there's no way to relock your bootloader. And because of my horrid experience I never unlocked my second Nexus. I'm glad I didn't cause my power button broke a few days ago and the warranty exchange was a lot easier with a locked bootloader.
Good luck.
Some people with unlocked bootloaders have had better luck conacting google about the warranty exchange. There's a thread around here where someone details the process.
That is big/bright! I had a defective pixel and it was way smaller than that. That looks almost like a cluster of them.
If you had tmobile I would say file a lost phone claim if you had the insurance on it.
Since paying 130 is cheaper than 200 lol.
Like the 2nd poster said, just call and don't tell em and see what happens.

[Q] MyTouch 4G Frying SIMs???

Hey guys I am kind of freaking out here. I would consider myself to know a good amount about CM but I've never heard of an issue like this before.
I just got new MyTouch 4G's for my family during Tmobile's deal a couple weeks back. I promptly put CM7 on all of them. This week though all of a sudden both my mom's and sister's phones starting having problems showing either no signal or no sim card inserted. I'm not with them right now because I'm in college and I'm staying in my dorm so I can't actually get a hold of the phones until this weekend. I had them test the SIMs on another phone and they're still not working. I had them go in to the Tmobile store yesterday and get their SIMs replaced but all of a sudden today one of them was having the problem again. The SIM still doesn't work on the other phone.
I had my stepdad take the phone in again and the tmobile rep claimed it was because of CM.
I have no idea whats going on. I picked one up for myself as well and I've been going strong on the nightlies with only minor annoyances, nothing like this. My mom is getting pissed off because she's a doctor and shes on call this week and she needs her phone. Can anyone help me out here??
For people like Dr's and such, reliability is KEY, there should be NO reason to have a rooted phone.
That being said, I'd say go back to stock.
I'm not convinced that its due to the rom, and I have CM on there so that she can use VPN with her office network.
If I believed Stock would fix the problem though I would switch it back.
First of all WTF did you put CM7 NB or RC on her phone? If she is a Doc chances are she is not tech buff and won't have time to upgrade the BS we flash addict due which is normal. So for her best thing would be Ice Glacier v1.1.6 and that even goes for your sister also. So flash IG v1.1.6 for both of them and for you as you seem to be aware of XDA which I am sure they don't even know what it is then you can only use CM7NB/RC. Far as signal goes stock are known to emulate signal that is not there, hence the iPhoney fiasco? and the AT&T network faking signal status? Where I am I did see signal fluctuate little coming from stock> IG> CM.
Did you make a nandroid back up before and after root ing?
Send them a tutorial and restore to a point where there were no issues. Them you can look your self we. you have time. Don't forget to do have them back up of data with titanium back up or my ball up or something simple before they restore, so they can drop their data back onto their phones when the restore is over.
My dad and I have similar issues, as he has no time to mess with his phone, but wants the functionality, so because he is out of town all week, I keep a nandroid back up of a point in time where all was stable and running good, have him keep refreshing his back ups of his data so as to not lose wine. the inevitable glitch occurs, at which point in time I right him a tutorial to fix I it, if is complicated, simply having him restore from the stable nandroid backup.
He this helps our gives you an idea.
G ood luck
Yeah I've done that already, they're back on the original root but for some reason their sims are still frying. I can't find any record of anything like this happening to anyone. I even asked Kmobs and he said he hadn't heard of it either
My MT4G fried my original SIM. Since using the one that came with the phone, all is OK. I believe there is a difference between older SIMs and the newer ones?

Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

OK so first off let me say I LOVE THE MYTOUCH 4G..that being said I'm pissed I've had the phone for a month and then one day i get up and theres no signal bars just an x above the signal bar. I call tmobile customer service and after an hour they tell me i have a defective phone, so sorry, holla back, so I get the bright idea to root the phone so I can use another carrier...I achieve S=off and perm root, and have flashed a custom rom( Iced Glacier 1.1.6) I've backed up on nanodroid, and the phone operates excellent actually overclocked at 1.7 ghz but no service bars...then i pay for an unlock code which i cant even input because my phone wont recognize at&t sim card ARRRGH!!! the phone is rooted so my warranty is void and i cant send it back!!! plz any suggestions...
I had a SIM card I got with my hd2 put it in my mt4g and it did the same thing. T mobile Rep told me I need a new SIM card a special one for 4g so the made me a new one well 3 of them I got 3mt4g

I had the same problem. As long as you unroot your phone and go back to stock rom, you should be fine with the warranty. Unless you told tmobile you were rooted. In that case, call htc and request for a repair and send in your unrooted phone.
Even if you root the phone, manufacturer defects are covered. the only part of the warranty that goes away from rooting is software and some internals that you can mess up by rooting (aka overclocking)
id say go back to stock completely and get the phones exchanged. my brothers STOCK MT4G fried 3 cards before T-mobile said screw it and sent him a new phone. he hasnt had a problem since.

Umm, I don't think so. Altering the software and security settings on your phone automatically voids any semblence of a warranty you had. You can unroot and get s=on again, then send in for warranty repair and be ok. But if your buttons stop responding or something, and you send it in and they see s=off and CM7 on there, rest assured they will be billing you the price of a new phone, even if that problem would have arisen regardless of you being rooted.

[UK]X force , accidental root?!

Hi,
My wife has a 1 month old X force, which developed a problem where everything on the screen was green.
So it's gone back into the uk service centre and the first thing they've said is that the phone is rooted?! and now they want over £200 for it to be repaired as the warranty is now void.
We got them to check on the system and apparently the phone was rooted on the day of activation.
Now, this phone is not rooted, my wife uses it, she doesn't want anything other than how the manufacturer intended.
It 100% hasn't been modified, rooted, unlocked etc yet motorola claim that the IMEI number on their servers, show the phone as 'rooted'.
Can anyone think of an explanation to this? It seems absolutely absurd a 1 month old phone bought new from motorola directly has an issue like this?
You mean bl unlocked, right? Reboot and check is it really unlocked. If not, maybe someone just entered IMEI of your phone by accident. You should not lose warranty if you did not really unlocked your phone. Another crazy idea is that seller unlocked it or you bought open box and previous owner unlocked it.
Sent from my XT1580
Thanks for the reply.
The warranty center have the phone right now so i can't check things myself.
They've turned round now and said they'll fix the phone free of charge - but they have not, yet, said if the warranty still stands or if the phone is still 'rooted' (their words, they haven't mentioned anything to do with the bl yet)
The phone was made with the moto maker on their website, then shipped from china so the seller unlocked theory is a lesser likely one imo
