"One OS that runs everywhere." There you have it, folks! Google intends to meld its Honeycomb tablet wares and Gingerbread smartphone software into one delicious Ice Cream Sandwich. Maybe that's why the "sandwich" bit is in the name?Either way, it'll be a universal OS that runs on everything from teeny tiny Android phones to 10-inch tablets and will intelligently adapt to each form factor with things like a resizable status bar. Some other fancy new additions are being demonstrated right now, including face-tracking and camera focus shifting based on voice recognition.

As The Gingerbread Man says, this definitely won't officially be coming to the X10.
You are just being mislead by it being a "universal OS". It's not universal in the sense that any phone currently available will be able to update to Ice Cream Sandwich. It's universal in the sense that it works on both phones AND tablets without having a seperate OS for each.

Sony ericcson have already stated that the update to 2.3 will be our last OS update and concidering they were going to leave us officially on 2.1. The only way you will see this on your x10 is by a custom rom by our devs, its that simple.

You mean "could be bothered" to port it. I'm sure that someone _could_, but an OS designed for a tablet on a 4.3" screen would be a bit average.
Wait for the Cyanogen guys to port IceCream Sandwich (Android 4.0?) if/when it turns up. By that time Samsung will have dropped the SGS2 like last weeks spam sandwich and will be pushing the SGS3 instead.
Of course, that won't be until around Christmas sometime I'd be guessing.
God dammit, this is about the 3rd topic on the same thing. SDK does not equal the whole os, google have only put out the source for the gpl bits and a lot of android is apache.
And a 3.0 port wouldn't make much sense on a 4.3inch screen
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
this is the exact reason why Google hasn't made honeycomb open sourced.
Honeycomb is only meant for tablets. Until people learn to accept that it will remain closed. We've already seen android ruined by sub-par OEMs putting android on their **** hardware.
I hope not, honeycomb looks so messy at the moment
There really is no point putting honeycomb on a phone, the optimisations are mainly just for larger screens. If there is something nice in there it normally gets ripped out and cooked into a ROM or app anyway, its just a waste of time doing a full port IMHO.

So, I just got Android 2. 3 on my x10, so I naturally googled Android 2.4. I came across an article that said that google was trying to get rid of the fragmentation of they're operating system, so I have a few questions. What does that mean for us? Does this mean that google will try to make it very easy for devs to give us an update. Should we expect an update from se(ha-ha)
Also, they're making it an open source OS for laptops and stuff apparently. Will I be able to install Android on a spare pc? LOL this all is quite intrigueing

ICS basically Honeycomb for both smartphones and tabs.
About the OS for laptop, that would be Chrome OS or Chromium OS(Open source). Its kinda old news already.

I read somewhere that any device capable of running gingerbread would be updated to ICS
I don't see any reason they won't provide an update to ICS... after all this phone was produced merely about a year ago, and is still one of the best (despite the fact that Samsung completely messed up with the RFS file system...) .
Ive also heard that any device capable of running GB will be able to run ICS, however the only thing that may hold the phone back is the limited ram :/
I do however hope we get ICS!!!

Maybe here ?
"At Google I/O I asked the Android team if Ice Cream Sandwich had any special hardware requirements that would prevent it from running on existing smartphones. They didn’t name specific handsets, but we were told that most phones which could run Android 2.3 would be able to handle the update. That doesn’t guarantee anything for current Android smartphone owners, but we expect Google’s own Nexus One and Nexus S will be some of the first devices upgraded to Android 4.0."
source: androidandme.com
This is interesting too:
"If you are a fan of custom ROMs, then you will be happy to know that Google plans to release Ice Cream Sandwich to the Android Open Source Project. Google typically releases the source code to each version of Android a few months after it debuts on a new device, but they chose not to do this with Honeycomb. Andy Rubin said Google wanted to prevent developers from putting the software on phones “and creating a really bad user experience. We have no idea if it will even work on phones.”
Ice Cream Sandwich will be available for the development community to hack to their hearts’ content and I’m sure we will see CyanogenMod 8 a month after the source code is public."
...............And maybe that Samsung could surprise us with a ICS firmware for i9000...
I think our SGS will get ICS officialy, btw I don't think it will bring any major improvement (as happened with gingerbread).
However it would be better to be updated because some new apps probably will only work on ICS.

You'll be happy to know that the head designer of WebOS switched teams to Google during the development of Honeycomb. The "theft" from Palm is entirely public, not that I mind. It will do a lot to make Android easier to adopt and really separate it in function from iOS.

More ICS News are coming from Samsung mobile, the Latest rumor informed that Samsung Will Upgrade all Gt-I9XXX series to the Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwhich in the Upcmoing period Which Includes Samsung Galaxy S, Nexus S and Galaxy SII, Google also announce that all android smartphone which already got official 2.3.3 update will also work with ICS like any other Update. Also Matias duarte said that most gingerbread devices will be able to handle ics but here the site is saying that Google believes that all 2.3.3 devices can handle ics properly.
But isn't that opposing their own announcement that nexus one wont get ics. Its either the news is fake or Google are not sure themselves or are rethinking on nexus one.
