Android 2. 4 Ice cream Sandwich - XPERIA X10 General

So, I just got Android 2. 3 on my x10, so I naturally googled Android 2.4. I came across an article that said that google was trying to get rid of the fragmentation of they're operating system, so I have a few questions. What does that mean for us? Does this mean that google will try to make it very easy for devs to give us an update. Should we expect an update from se(ha-ha)
Also, they're making it an open source OS for laptops and stuff apparently. Will I be able to install Android on a spare pc? LOL this all is quite intrigueing

ICS basically Honeycomb for both smartphones and tabs.
About the OS for laptop, that would be Chrome OS or Chromium OS(Open source). Its kinda old news already.

Once the bootloader is cracked for sure. But they'll have a hard time making camera drivers and they'll have to wait for Sony to release multi touch and reverse engineer it for 2.3, but everything else will be able to run fine.

Yes it was released and my oldest son's Motorola Droid on Verizon already has the upgrade installed OTA when he booted up yesterday.
Isn't it grand waiting for SE and AT&T to get their collective heads out of their asses and push an upgrade out that is two revisions and eleven months behind.
Pathetic.
Are you sure about that? The sdk was only released a few days ago

Just pried it out of his hands and sw info states 2.2.1. Must be a small 2.2 upgrade. My mistake. Still doesn't provide an excuse for the ridiculous delay w/SE & AT&T.

Google announces universal OS Ice Cream Sandwich

"One OS that runs everywhere." There you have it, folks! Google intends to meld its Honeycomb tablet wares and Gingerbread smartphone software into one delicious Ice Cream Sandwich. Maybe that's why the "sandwich" bit is in the name?Either way, it'll be a universal OS that runs on everything from teeny tiny Android phones to 10-inch tablets and will intelligently adapt to each form factor with things like a resizable status bar. Some other fancy new additions are being demonstrated right now, including face-tracking and camera focus shifting based on voice recognition.

X10 wont go further than 2.3 and we're bloody luck to get that off Sony. I'd imagine a dev will make a custom rom of this so we shouldn't miss out ;-)

As The Gingerbread Man says, this definitely won't officially be coming to the X10.
You are just being mislead by it being a "universal OS". It's not universal in the sense that any phone currently available will be able to update to Ice Cream Sandwich. It's universal in the sense that it works on both phones AND tablets without having a seperate OS for each.

Honeycomb 3.2 for SGS2?

The SDK has been released, will we see this on the SGS2 soon?
If not by Samsung by the rom gurus?

You mean "could be bothered" to port it. I'm sure that someone _could_, but an OS designed for a tablet on a 4.3" screen would be a bit average.
Wait for the Cyanogen guys to port IceCream Sandwich (Android 4.0?) if/when it turns up. By that time Samsung will have dropped the SGS2 like last weeks spam sandwich and will be pushing the SGS3 instead.
Of course, that won't be until around Christmas sometime I'd be guessing.
God dammit, this is about the 3rd topic on the same thing. SDK does not equal the whole os, google have only put out the source for the gpl bits and a lot of android is apache.
And a 3.0 port wouldn't make much sense on a 4.3inch screen
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
this is the exact reason why Google hasn't made honeycomb open sourced.
Honeycomb is only meant for tablets. Until people learn to accept that it will remain closed. We've already seen android ruined by sub-par OEMs putting android on their **** hardware.
I hope not, honeycomb looks so messy at the moment
There really is no point putting honeycomb on a phone, the optimisations are mainly just for larger screens. If there is something nice in there it normally gets ripped out and cooked into a ROM or app anyway, its just a waste of time doing a full port IMHO.

Google search is your friend. No need to start a new thread.
Honeycomb is Android 3.+
Ice Cream Sandwich is Android 4.0
2.4 is still Gingerbread. It is a minor branch.
2.0 and 2.1 were both Eclair as well.

Question I have is what will the next android number be? Afterall the tablets have 3.0 so will it carry on from 2.4? Or go to 4?

As it's not a major update it will have3.1As opposed to the current3.0
Like I mentioned in the post earlier.
Edit:
It will probably be named 4.0 for the 2.3.4 update on the Xperia's

ICS Upgrade

Thought id start this thread to create a bit of build up to the upgrade, im a regular arc user so ive still got another month or so to wait but il feel good if the arc s gets theirs on time, which being the end of march could be any day now. Sony seem to be quiet on this, anyone heard anything?
I'm hoping they release the ICS for arc s by the end of this weekend, the suspense is killing me slowly lol. I check this forum and sony blog post every morning.
As they said late March to early April, that could mean the update would between 15 March and 15 April.
Would love to get an update from SE on the progress for the first phones that are due upgrades.
Clearly feeling a little bit left out now that Samsung are releasing theirs.
Hasn't HTC also updated a device?
Sony is behind - again
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
I'm very enthusiastic about ICS too but doesn't it mean that we won't have our devices rooted anymore? I've linked tons of apps via Link2SD and my Arc don't have enough space to hold them all.
I'm worried when we will have to upgrade to ICS, AFAIK a lot of apps out there is not yet compatible with ICS, until the developer will upgrade the app.
But I'm also Excited because lots of optimization and features will be available to us, specially that Adreno 205 Driver will be included(I read it somewhere)

I think otherwise. Almost every app I tried is fully compatible with ICS.
Also, Sony has announced the neo L in China and it launches with ICS on board. It uses the same chipset as the arc (MSM8255). Perhaps we could port it when someone gets and uploads the filesystem dump, that is, if the device comes out sooner than the ICS update.
There's nothing on PTCRB yet and updates usually appear on here well in advance of the update actually being pushed. So it could still be weeks away assuming they haven't had any serious issues they need to fix first. It's been 4 weeks since the beta and not a peep from the Sony devs here on XDA which is a shame.
