Trackball problem :(

I have problem with trackball.
Down cant move. Left, right and right woks good.
Whats a problem?

I have had the same issue at times. I use a pre-moistened lens cloth to help clean it up and remove any debris.

How do you mean? did you open all?
I have 2 years guarantee!

Same here. I've received 2 replacement handsets (TMo Dash 3G) because of the trackball. Does the moistened wipe help?

Reminds me of the well-known problem on the HTC Tornado back in the day. A lot of people suffered the same issue on that phone too.

I have had the same issue at time too..if you still think about your warranty then go to local service center..and clean the phone..
or...

Wal-Mart sells these individually wrapped, pre-moistened lens cleaner cloths (kind of like the hand cleaner packages you get at some restaurants).
Anyway, they’re called Zeiss Lens Cloths and they sell them in the Optical Section, up front where they sell eye glasses. They clean the BB from top to bottom extremely well and help brighten and clean the trackball. Package of 50 is like 2 bucks.
I find with the q-tip method the cotton sticks to the trackball. my 2c
xavier – thanks for your post, i tried your suggestion for the Zeiss Lens Cloth premoistened wipes and it worked perfectly and I did not have to open the Blackberry Bold to solve the problem. I keep these wipes around for numerous uses in dealing with eye glasses, lens, or other similar uses. Thanks again.

If you have the warranty, might as well just take it in, but I have the cloths all ready, so I just clean it.
The pre-moistend lens cloths are used with the device intact. I just wipe down the trackball real well, rotate it a bit and continue cleaning until it rolls freely.

It happened also to me couple of times. Just blow quickly at the trackball using your lips or presurized air for computer keyboards. Not sure about any wet "ass wipes" which may leak into the phone inside. My method always works (so far) Service repair is last instance. Good luck!

The wipes don't help, the track ball opperates on a magnetic principle (the pick ups are soldered on the main board, the movment is controled by magnetic cylinders.) I had to send my phone in to htc after about two months, they replaced the main board and trackball assy. I had it appart also, there was nothing to clean, nor to fix. All sold state. (except the little rollers)

Blackberry technology is using magnetic cylinders too.. hmm quite strange...i was going to htc care..wait for 2 hours..the cust service said, all they do is just clean my trackball..and everything is ok...till now

So..... wat I did is I took a straw cut it long way down (hotdog style if you remember how to do that from 1st grade haha) it into a very small size, about just enough to wrap around the trackball half way. Then I inserted the straw into the slot between the chrome and the trackball (this part can take some time so just be patient) you will be surprised how deep it can go, I went all the way till it stopped. Now you will have the straw sticking out of the BOLD. Bend the rest of the straw down so it is now folded parallel to the bold but still sticking in it. Now wat I did is I spent it clock wise for about a minute then yanked it out and you will notice a ton of lint/dirt pop out, after this you will want to blow on it while rolling with your finger in all directions. You should be seeing a lot of dirt rolling around by now, and also the straw will have a tiny bit of wear on it. Proceed to do this as much as you like but doing so in 1 direction will produce more dirt. I went clockwise about 5 times then counter clockwise about another 5. Then viola it was like brand new. Hope this works for you crackberry heads out there. Deuces!!

well, i suppose you could get some dirt in between the cylinder and the pickup chip... unfortunately the ball is not removable on the dash, it only comes out if the phone is taken appart.

yes the htc care guys opened my phone from back..pull the ball and the container..clean the ball with some liquid...i think thats quite easy todo..
i will do above by myself some day after my waranty finished

Did u get the ball out?? I tried, the only reasonable way was by opening the case. The outer ring does not remove as it can be removed on dinle berries..lol.

nope this method is to clean the container of ball inside from outside without to open phone case...
to pull out the ball you must open the snap case totally.

I Just disassembly my HTC Snap s522 to clean the trackball today,
I can confirm you now guys..the htc snap s522 trackball is same type like blackberry 8310 trackball..so you can replace your trackball with BB 8310 trackball.
I just tried my friend Blackberry 8310 trackball and tried to running it on my snap..and it worked well.

our snap use same type like blackberry trackball and sometimes the trackball will stop working till 6 months of use..(base on report at BB forum) the ball will become slick after 6 month.
you will need to know how to replace the ball (after 1 year service guarantee expired) anyway..thats why i concern about the trackball..
For me Being to know i can use the bb trackball on my snap is great..because cheap aftermarket BB trackball is everywhere in my country only $4 (include trackball house) compare to costly oem ball (will cost you about $20)
My tips:
You just need to keep the OEM trackball house and use the cheap aftermarket ball on it, you willl still has HTC OEM trackball performance on your snap.

Clean the DUST out from under the Screen! UPDATED W/ PICS

For those who are/have/and still experiencing specs of dust underneath the touchscreen....
... I will endeavor on a journey using iFixIt.com's Nexus One Teardown Guide. There will be no need to document me taking apart the device, however, I will be taking pictures of the dust, the location of the leak, me cleaning the device, and an attempt to seal the leak. I bought the essential tools from ifixit.com: Phillips #00 Screwdriver, T4 Torx Screwdriver, iPod Opening Tools. This came out to a total of $12.85. I then used a $5.00 coupon code (11221FIXIT) bringing me down to $7.85. There is no sales tax unless you live in CA. Shipping was $3.17.
Long story short - I was tired of looking at the dust, tired of the HTC folks say "sorry, you voided your warranty" and "sorry, we only send you a refurbished device, not your own or a new one". So, I spent the $11 and I'm going to fix it on my own. WISH ME LUCK.

*******UPDATE*******
Alright folks - I took the time out of my day to open my Nexus One and clean off the dust underneath the screen. I took pictures. Here is my assessment after completing this daunting task.
PROS
-NO MORE DUST!!!!!!
-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MORE DUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!!!!
CONS
-Takes a lot of time (2.5 hours)
-There is now a smear on the bottom of the screen now - it can only be seen in direct sunlight
-Putting it back together is an ASS-PAIN. Such a pain in fact, by the time I was finished there were still 2 screws left, and 3 weird rubbery pieces that I left out.
The phone is back together and in excellent working shape
All in all, only do this if you have the amount of dust under your screen like I did. I am happy with the results but I think I want a BRAND NEW PHONE. Oh well.. Enjoy the pics.

Ok, most important thing to do. Make sure you are in a clean room! Maybe even a Clean Room. Otherwise you will end up putting more dust in than you take out. Cheapest way is to run a hot shower and let the place fog up and then settle to get the dust out of the air. But probably not a good thing to open your phone while it is still fully fogged up as you'll get condensation inside it

Yes, of course I'll take pictures of the dust BEFORE I disassemble the device. And then I'll take the AFTER pictures when it's reassembled.

yeah i cant stress enough to make sure you do this in a claean environment. i tried doing this with my nokia e71, and i never could get the screen lcd clean no matter what i tried! as i put it back together, little particles would just gravitate to it no matter what. i would wipe and try to quickly put it together, more dust. tried again, more dust. over and over.
here at work we have cleanrooms at a extremely high rating. if only i could use them to disassemble my smartphone.

if you get a nexus just press down on the bottom by the capacitive buttons. If the screen creaks or feels like it gives just follow what Uansari1 did and heat it with a hair dryer for a few seconds from like 5in. away and the press firmly around the screen. It will help to reseal.

Weird. I have called HTC. I am on my second exchange from them with the same issue. Dust under the screen. I have yet to be asked if my bootloader is unlocked and they have not said anything about my warrenty being void. I am getting my second replacement phone tomorrow from HTC. I called them last night about 6PM PST.

i dont think it was a common problem at all. but then i have seen threads with many people havng this issue. so far my nexus has not had this issue at all and its over 3 months old. so i dont know. but i DO know that if you look in the iphone forums, dust under the screen threads are all over there too. even windows mobile forums have the same threads. so it seems like its a problem with most touch screen phones.

They put a $500+ hold on your credit card. They won't tell you that you will lose that money if you've unlocked your bootloader. My guess is, they're hoping you've voided your warranty, sent in an unlocked phone, and now they keep the money. I also asked them how much it would cost to repair it... They estimated $179. BULL****.. I KNOW.

Nah. Theres alredy a big thread about this. They do put a $530 hold on your CC. But the hold is gone once they receive the phone. If they WANT to charge you the its usually a $28 repair fee or you have a choice of sending back the replacement phone.

I have my nexus for 3 months and there no dust under the screen. I have also a hero for 9 months and no dust there also. I saw the threads to maybe people work in dusty places or they have a loot of dust in their pockets

If it's any consolation, I've had my replacement N1 since the 3rd week it was out... as someone said, as soon as I got it, I heated it up and pressed firmly all around the screen to make sure it was tightly sealed. It's still dust free today.

I will have to do this when I get my replacement N1 from HTC. I didnt do it with the first replacement and now theres just after 4 weeks of use.

I have been selling a couple a week at the cell phone store I work for, and haven't seen this on a single one of those. I would say all in all, I have sold about 20 Nexus One now.
Personally, I think the issue goes back to these shipping out during January during the coldest period of the winter, even having freezing temps all the way into Texas... I suspect that that phones got cold enough that through contraction and added brittleness of the adhesive in a cold state, the seal broke.

FIXED: G2 Hinge Teardown/Repair

So, I decided to fix my G2 hinge which was a little on the loose side but didn't want to use magnets because it would affect the Compass. If you don't think magnets do affect the compass, i invite you to open up HTC or Google Navigation GPS app and wave a magnet around your phone and watch your direction change.
In any case, I looked for a teardown online in hopes that it would show the actual spring mechanism for the Z-Hinge...but all of them seemed to have skip that part. So...here's a photo of the ACTUAL MECHANISM responsible for the "snapping/springy" action of the phone. As you can imagine, assuming you can get to this point in terms of disassembly, tightening up the mechanism is SUPER EASY. All you have to do is take out the spring, stretch it, put it back in. I think the only way they could have made this mechanism smaller and more reliable is to have used a tiny hydraulic piston in place of the spring, but since I'm an EE and not a Mech Eng. well, what do I know!

Assuming you could find a spring small enough to fit you could buy a spring with a higher tension. That's what I did with my Ruger LCP to help the feeding cycle.
You could have taken a couple dissemblely pics to help us get to that point.

You only need to tear it down as far as PCB Removal to access the spring mechanism in the hinge (its the top side near the power button). BE SUPER DUPER careful with PLUGGING IN the micro-SD ribbon cable when you reassemble. One of the spring tension pins (its a flip up type ribbon cable clamp), broke off on me. I was like OMFG for about 2 minutes until I realized it was just the tension pin NOT an actual connection pin.
Oh yeah, and for anyone that hasn't figured this out already...WARRANTY = VOID!!! Oh, and the normal CYA (cover your a$$ clauses) apply...I'm not responsible for any damage etc. etc. etc. that YOU might cause doing this fix/mod.

Now I havn't tried magnets on this phone (or any other).. but I do know that the magnetic strength of magnetic tape, such as was used in the other "fix" is not very strong at all, as it barely strong enough to work as the fix it was intended to do, for this reason I could believe that it had no effect on the compass.
However sure, if you use a proper magnet it will mess things up.
However, very nice job on this but I doubt many will want to void their warranty when they could just send it back under warranty and do it that way.

However sure, if you use a proper magnet it will mess things up.
However, very nice job on this but I doubt many will want to void their warranty when they could just send it back under warranty and do it that way.

You are correct about the warranty. Although there are a few stickers on the torx screws that say void... they won't refuse your phone and claim that your warranty is voided. Its bs. They just check for eextremely obvious things like water damage and physical damage. I was a cell tech forever... they hardly care about that crap like is its rooted or whatever. Just don't make it too obvious like a phone stuck in a boot loop with cyanogen logo flashing over and over, lol!
But it does depend on the tech... if he/she is an asshole and dont root their own phones or hack... they could reject it. personally, I think those are the type that have no buisness being a tech nor would understand that rooting a phone is going to cause any serious damage to it. unless you flash the wrong spl/hardboot but at that point... 90% likely it wont even boot into bootloader in which there's no way to tell what happened whether it was a custom flash or a bad board. those are instant replacements as long as there's no physical/liquid damage. well, sorry for hijacking the thread and my poor spelling. good work with the hinge, OP! those ribbons can be a pain to reseat!

dude great find....but way toooooooooo deep for me....If my hinge continues to drive me insane, I'll just start calling tmo like crazy until they give me a anew phone.

Stretching the spring is a good temporary fix. The best real fix would be to find one the same size but with a higher spring tension. Good find none the less.

So I HEARD something interesting today. TRY THIS....
1st: Turn Off Unlock sounds if you can.........
2nd. Put the G2 close to you face, open the screen (top) very SLOWLY.... when the screen is parallel to the keyboard (halfway) push it a little bit more and you will HEAR a CLICK..... im guessing its the spring... but my understanding is that if spring stays stationary (in one spot) and just twists..... there shouldn't be a click sound..... which means something is mis-aligned (maybe the hinge part that is connected to the spring)... my hinge came in good condition, still stays intact when I hold the phone upside down.
Those of you with loose hinge... I encourage you to try this....

Um .... click? misaligned? i think that if it twists, then it should be in good shape as it's doing what it ought to be doing.
Either way, my hinge sucks, and there is no click....

I was just thinking about what the teardown again. Now that I really consider it, I don't think that I had to unplug all the cables, just unscrew the PCB. I think there is enough slack to carefully maneuver the hinge out..maybe. LOL. Where do you get replacement springs? I guess I should really have measured the length...maybe I still can from my photo and a couple reference points.

Ignore the click...its not a "misalignment" of the spring or stars or whatever else. Look at the photo I posted, it doesn't matter if the spring twists. In fact, I'm pretty sure it does swivel and move in there. The back end of the spring is simply braced against the metal side. The other end against the actual "pivot" (2 pieces of very smartly cut plastic) is "centered" in place with a small pin jut like most other hinge/spring mechanisms.
Now if someone could tell me where to get a super strong spring...I'll be all over that! LOL. It was already really hard to get the spring back in after I stretched it but a mega strong one would be worth the hassle...

So just to be sure....the stretching of the spring worked for you....you actually got it to be tight?

So I found a used Nexus one on craigslist for a great deal and everything works perfectly fine. The previous owner had his email engraved on the phone, but that is not an issue. The screen also has some minor scratches, but none are visible when using it. However, there is one annoying problem. A speck of dust on the bottom left of the phone. I don't know how it possibly could have gotten there.
That is the most annoying part about it. One, white, speck. Should I ask him to take it back, or am I being too picky? Does your N1 have a speck of dust?
Finally, I am worried about how this will affect resale value. I know they are currently going for $200+, but with a speck of dust and an engraved email, I don't know how much it'll be worth.
Should I get a case for the phone?

if that's the only thing, I'd say keep it. The sealing around that area is a problem on (all? most?) N1s. I have quite a lot of dust near that corner (and I've been very careful), if you read around you'll see it's fairly common.
It's even remarkable that it's only one speck of dust enjoy your N1!

I don't have any dust under my screen, but I remember that being a common complaint here during the first few months they were available.
If you want to risk the getting more particles in there you could take it apart using the ifixit guide and hope for the best.

Yep, as far as I can tell, the spec of dust, one minor scratch on the back, and the email engraving are the only problems. I really hope that dust particle doesn't multiply.
Does anyone think I should get a case for my new N1, or should I wear it "naked." Finally, as a new person to android, please help me get to know my phone. I want a weather app like in HTC Sense, but I don't want to install weather channel or something. I have the NYtimes widget, so I don't need the default news widget. What other kinds of apps should I have?
Finally, I will probably do a review of the N1, from a person coming from a iPhone 2g. The N1 is blazing FAST!!! The same apps on N1 load in less than 2 seconds, while on the old iphone, it would have taken 15 seconds. Heavy websites like head-fi load in 3 seconds, compared to almost 30seconds on the 2g.
Forgot to say that my phone runs 2.3.4 gingerbread, which the previous owner flashed before he sold it to me.

First thing i did on getting my N1 is get the hairdryer on to it. Warmed the glue behind the screen edges and then push it down to get a better seal.
Obviously a bit late for you now but may help to stop any more dust getting in

if it bothers you I'll take it off your hands for $150.

In any case, I just discovered this amazing thing called the "wifi never sleep policy."
So here's the deal. I have no mobile data (shocker!!). That means I shut shut off my data roaming and mobile data settings. Since I am often around wifi, I just use that. I notice that when the phone has been untouched for maybe 20 minutes or so, when my desktop client gets an email, my phone does not. So I looked around, and I found out about the wifi-never sleep policy.
What exactly does this mean? The description says that it will never switch to mobile data, but I have NO mobile data. To have maximum battery life, what should I do? Effectively, if I set to off when screen is off, wouldn't it effectively turn off ALL data (wifi and mobile data, which was never on to begin with).
Also, I could opt for 2g networks only, but I don't know if that's useful.

Still you should set wifi sleep policy to never. Its super efficient even with wifi on.

I have some dust on the bottom left corner if my screen as well. I wish I knew how to get it out. It's noticeable when there's sun shining on the phone.

I opened to clean my n1 before, but new dust came back two weeks later. Just like I didn't do anything.

I don't have any dust under my screen but i do have one hair under the screen. I leave it there to remind me of the 7 year old sweat shop worker who built my phone in China. I imagine him playfully giggling with the sweatshop child worker seated next to him, then with a firm swat to the back of the head, echoing from the taskmasters whip behind him. Then franticly and quickly pressing the digitizer on my nexus into place. But not soon enough for the single hair to fall down into its final resting place. This single storyless tear , frozen in its technological tomb for eternity .

I don't know where the previous user engraved his email, but if its on the battery cover, then why don't you get a replacement cover from cnn.cn?
The N1 has been one of the best smartphones I've ever had!

Get a screen protector. No need for a case.

I'd take it. With mine, i dropped it a few times so I have dings on the darker gray plastic bit but othe than that it's great.
The resale of the phone is probably most affected by the email engraving.

[Q] Advice needed !

Hi fellow xda-ers,
I smashed my N4's back door yesterday, in a very eccentric way.
I was riding my race bike really fast, when I noticed something awkward in the balance of the bike, it felt kind of loose.
Cycling on a cobbled street, I didn't think more of it. Suddenly the rear wheel just hopped off, and stuck itself in the frame.
As I was pedaling standing, i was projected forward and almost fell. The upper part of my thighs struck the handlebar or the stem so hard, that it totally crushed my barely 2 months old N4.
Now, the back door is totally destroyed. It wouldn't be so much of a big deal if there wasn't dead pixel cloud on the screen...
The touchscreen is however fully working, tchecked it under developper options.
I am now wondering what to do. Either repair the back, get over the dead pixel problem and cross finger hoping nothing else has been damaged. Or repair the back, RMA the phone arguing about the drop connection problems (which I truely have been facing) and hope a new one comes. One last solution, which truely repels me, would be to repair the back, sell the phone and get a new one.
My question is, would a tiny grey cloud on the screen and a different backplate be noticed, if I RMA the phone ?
The spot is almost only visible on grey & white.
Please kindly spare me with the moral issues it raises. I am a student, I waited several months to get this phone and broke it out of bad luck, not even mishandling it. Plus the phone had dropouts problems ...

If you had bad luck, why is it the responsibility of Google to foot the bill of your bad luck? When did Google enter the business of insurance?
I understand that you're a student, but think about the above. And if the phone truly had substantial drop-out problems, you would have replaced it a long time ago. Your choice to keep the phone suggests that the "problem" is not as dire as you're making it out to be. It's funny how the phone breaks, and suddenly your phone had a "problem" all along that you "lived with".
Repair the phone, sell it off if you want, and disclose that information to your buyer.

Couldn't you call up LG customer care and send it to them to fix it for a cost?

A backplate is an ok cost. Backplate + Display is definitely not worth it...

So you don't think they would notice the damage to the phone once they get it back and not charge you?

The accident is through no fault of Google so they wont repair it for free. Even though you started the RMA procedure, they wont accept a damaged phone like that when you send it them. Most likely the hold they put on your card will actually be what you end up paying.

Under no circumstances should you sell the phone unless you tell the person what happened to it and sell it as-is without trying to fix it yourself. Some people are into fixing phones. Sending it to Google under the assumption that you are trying to fix a different problem so you can get a new phone is just plain dishonest. Karma is real and doesn't let people get away with dishonest actions for very long.

If you can live with the screen issue, fixing the back is a simple $10 thing. Go buy a DBrand skin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095261 they will stick to broken screens and now you can't tell. No fancy pattern but you lost that anyway now.They are pretty thick and the black leather I have feels nice.
I keep thinking about bringing my N4 with mne when I ride but avoid it for this reason. I have hit my thigh on many things, I would rather pop out the SIM and use my HTC desire, but I generaly just ride without a phone or use the Desire as an MP3 player.

No one on here knows what Google is going to do even if you repair the phone. Its all just speculation as to what their process is for inspecting RMA'd devices. I believe the back glass runs around $100 and not sure if its an exact copy of the original or not. But if you repairs look original I say RMA it.
