8525 shuts itself off!

I have a 8525 that is 14 months old and has been working wonderfully all this time. A few days ago it started to shut itself off at no repeatable times. I pull it out and it is off! I try to load something and it shuts down instead. Today I did a total wipe and reinstalled from a back up. The same problem occurred. I wiped it again and installed a 2 month old backup and the same thing occurred. I have changed the battery. The memory is fine. The only thing that I have not tried is a wipe and a reinstall from scratch, but obviously would prefer not to do that.
WM 6.1 is running

Check to see if your battery connection isn't lose. If the power keeps shutting off for no reason in your pocket it could be that its not making proper connection. If you bought another battery that wasn't a HTC original then it may not be Quite the right size. I had this problem with an extended battery I bought. It was about 1/2mm less width than an original but that was enough to be a problem. A piece of paper between the battery and the casing fixed this.

Thanks, but the battery is not the problem as the spare battery is one that I have been using for 6 months and the other one that I tried is the factory battery. Unfortunately, it is more serious than this.

I'm having similar problems with my Hermes...and I bought it ~14months ago too, refurbished, it's a Voda v1605, uk ebay seller.
Actually mine stays powered most of the time and it's not a SW problem: I'm trying various ROMs and I'm 100% sure the problem is HW-based.
Well it's much I have this prob and don't have any warranty, so I opened it and tried to "manually" solve this matter: I put a page between my qwerty and the motherboard, and this, together with some paper under the battery, solved the problem at most.
Now it switches off less frequently, but still not enough to safely bring it in my pocket and always find it switched on after taking it off
I tried to get it repaired but they told me they'd change the motherboard for +/- the price of a "as-new" 2nd hand one
I hope you solve, but if you don't....then I think we have to sell it "as-damaged" (or return it in warranty if you have)...I'm actually looking for a Diamond or TyTn II (see hard choice... thread ) and leave this dear mate

This is what I was afraid of. No warranty here so have been thinking of moving to the Tilt, but I am leaving town in a day and have no time to get and set it up.

Its also possible if you dropped your Hermes you may have cracked or bent the battery connectors.... May need to be fixed with soldering iron but is a pain if you can't solder really tiny joints...

I'm ready to go, I want my Hermes back
Can you point me to some photos to understand where to solder the connectors better?
I mean, I've already seen them (so many times hehe), I also have that cool yellow gauge that could be useful to understand if they don't "touch" correctly, but I'm not sure I understood where are the soldering points
A photo with some arrow could be useful (or something similar lol).

Guys, just to let you all be near me...with my hearth that cries at every Hermes black screen...I've opened it again, did some tweaks - again - and did a complete photo-report and a short video too!

Sorry was feeling a bit sick yesterday and didn't reply.
Having looked at the pics an video, I am begining to think one of two things:
1. There may be a crack in one of the battery connector soldered joints
Or
2. This has nothing to do with the battery connector and may have more to do with the general condition of the phone.
Number one could probably only be checked by re-soldering the contacts.
Number two is quite unspecific. You see when I look at the pics and see the gaps in the casing, and some damage to internal plastic, I get the feeling that the circuit boards etc are probably not be firmly held in place. In other words there is likely quite a bit of movement internally and between the two halves of the phone.
This in itself could cause the battery to move around. It could also cause the rigid flex cables to move at their connectors.
I think you need to check each and every connector is well inserted AND try to firm up all the looseness and movement internally and in the casing . I'm not sure that wlll be an easy job given some plastic parts appear broken.
I think it's going to be difficult to give further advice (not being able to see and feel the device directly.)
However, I'll have a look at my Hermes this weekend, and try to establish a link between pressing certain areas of the keyboard and a total shutdown.

Anyway, I have the WORST news for you....my Hermes has gone, completely.
After the mail I sent you the other day, don't know why really, perhaps for the spray, I don't know, it didn't switch on again.
When I connect the battery charger it comes red, and if I remember what I read somewhere here red means it doesn't feel the battery at all.
I tried to leave it outdoor these 2 days to see if magically that spray which left a film everywhere would have evaporated but this didn't help.
I'm having a very "rude" welder as I said, it has a cutting tip just to make you understand, anyway I've just toggled the battery conn with it (I had nothing to loose) and I have the 2 centered one which took away a dark "film", and on the motherboard I have the 2 silver connectors on each side, which touch 2-by-2, and the 2 centered one which are completely black...don't know if I damaged something that way...
I think tomorrow I could try to weld 4 wires (what are the centered one for?) and see what happens...what do you think?
I'd like to try everything to even explore the 0,01% possibilities to see it working again...

Yes it means the battery is not charging - which suggests the connector is now disconnected even if it wasn't before.

Anyway. To be honest, given the general condition of the phone and it's various problems - I think you should start looking for a new phone - you will never be able to rely on the one you have there.
You could also consider making a small amount of money ny selling off parts from the one you have. Folk here are always looking for difficult to find parts.
Sorry to be defeatist about the phone, but I think you realise that it's condition is getting worse not better. Assuming money is no problem then it's time to get yourself a present

Well I will, as soon as I can...currently I can't, that's why yesterday my father wanted to help buying 50% (200€) of a Nokia N95 8gb to let me use it and wait better prices for the HTCs out there...and take the Nokia for himself when I decide (what a profiteer haha!!)...BUT of course the shop finished them ([OT]there's a long story for N95s here, everyone wants it but noone gets! In short, my sister got a new bricked one (DOA) and is waiting for a replacement for 2 months; my dad bought one on ebay and got cheated for 270€...now I damage my phone and want to buy at the shop with him and it ends two days after we had seen it there...if this was a film I'd call it "Nokia N95-8gb: the nightmare"! [/OT])!

Well you have nothing more to lose by continuing to try things out on the Hermes.
A couple of points regarding your pictures. You know you can upload the pictures to photobucket and then using the direct link that photbucket gives you below the picture you can then post the picture on XDA-Dev. You use the little "insert image" icon when writing a post. As shown here:

I'm not sure what that black film on the central connectors is. Perhaps it's melted plastic from the connector housing. In any case you should be able to melt it off. (Be careful though because excess heat may be transferred into the board and start loosening other connections. The Hermes has a multilayered m/board and some connections are "sandwiched" between the layers).
I see the picture of the spray - I assume it is a metal polish? It may or may not conduct electricity - if it does that could cause serious problems even after it's cleaned off.

I just realized the "rude" adjective refers to a person, I used it because in Italian saying something/someone is "rude" or "rudimentale" means it/he is simple, old, rudimentary or primitive...and here we use it for both things and people...think you'd say unkind if it was a person.
Speaking of the Hermes, those 2 black ""connectors"" you see on the board in that photo have not something "more" comparing to the others, but something LESS! It's sort of scaring after having read about the layers, because under the gold connectors, after having removed them, I could detach just a sort of LAYER (that's what I meant with film), which btw didn't seem conducting side-by-side

I have had the same issue at times. I use a pre-moistened lens cloth to help clean it up and remove any debris.

How do you mean? did you open all?

Same here. I've received 2 replacement handsets (TMo Dash 3G) because of the trackball. Does the moistened wipe help?

Reminds me of the well-known problem on the HTC Tornado back in the day. A lot of people suffered the same issue on that phone too.

I have had the same issue at time too..if you still think about your warranty then go to local service center..and clean the phone..

Wal-Mart sells these individually wrapped, pre-moistened lens cleaner cloths (kind of like the hand cleaner packages you get at some restaurants).
Anyway, they’re called Zeiss Lens Cloths and they sell them in the Optical Section, up front where they sell eye glasses. They clean the BB from top to bottom extremely well and help brighten and clean the trackball. Package of 50 is like 2 bucks.
I find with the q-tip method the cotton sticks to the trackball. my 2c
xavier – thanks for your post, i tried your suggestion for the Zeiss Lens Cloth premoistened wipes and it worked perfectly and I did not have to open the Blackberry Bold to solve the problem. I keep these wipes around for numerous uses in dealing with eye glasses, lens, or other similar uses. Thanks again.

If you have the warranty, might as well just take it in, but I have the cloths all ready, so I just clean it.
The pre-moistend lens cloths are used with the device intact. I just wipe down the trackball real well, rotate it a bit and continue cleaning until it rolls freely.

It happened also to me couple of times. Just blow quickly at the trackball using your lips or presurized air for computer keyboards. Not sure about any wet "ass wipes" which may leak into the phone inside. My method always works (so far) Service repair is last instance. Good luck!

The wipes don't help, the track ball opperates on a magnetic principle (the pick ups are soldered on the main board, the movment is controled by magnetic cylinders.) I had to send my phone in to htc after about two months, they replaced the main board and trackball assy. I had it appart also, there was nothing to clean, nor to fix. All sold state. (except the little rollers)

Blackberry technology is using magnetic cylinders too.. hmm quite strange...i was going to htc care..wait for 2 hours..the cust service said, all they do is just clean my trackball..and everything is ok...till now

Ok so I was having the exact same problem, and I used to do tech support for these devices so I kno that they work just like a PC mouse. So..... wat I did is I took a straw cut it long way down (hotdog style if you remember how to do that from 1st grade haha) it into a very small size, about just enough to wrap around the trackball half way. Then I inserted the straw into the slot between the chrome and the trackball (this part can take some time so just be patient) you will be surprised how deep it can go, I went all the way till it stopped. Now you will have the straw sticking out of the BOLD. Bend the rest of the straw down so it is now folded parallel to the bold but still sticking in it. Now wat I did is I spent it clock wise for about a minute then yanked it out and you will notice a ton of lint/dirt pop out, after this you will want to blow on it while rolling with your finger in all directions. You should be seeing a lot of dirt rolling around by now, and also the straw will have a tiny bit of wear on it. Proceed to do this as much as you like but doing so in 1 direction will produce more dirt. I went clockwise about 5 times then counter clockwise about another 5. Then viola it was like brand new. Hope this works for you crackberry heads out there. Deuces!!

well, i suppose you could get some dirt in between the cylinder and the pickup chip... unfortunately the ball is not removable on the dash, it only comes out if the phone is taken appart.

yes the htc care guys opened my phone from back..pull the ball and the container..clean the ball with some liquid...i think thats quite easy todo..
i will do above by myself some day after my waranty finished

Now wat I did is I spent it clock wise for about a minute then yanked it out and you will notice a ton of lint/dirt pop out, after this you will want to blow on it while rolling with your finger in all directions.
You should be seeing a lot of dirt rolling around by now, and also the straw will have a tiny bit of wear on it.
Proceed to do this as much as you like but doing so in 1 direction will produce more dirt.
I went clockwise about 5 times then counter clockwise about another 5. Then viola it was like brand new.
Hope this works for you crackberry heads out there. Deuces!!

Did u get the ball out?? I tried, the only reasonable way was by opening the case. The outer ring does not remove as it can be removed on dinle berries..lol.

nope this method is to clean the container of ball inside from outside without to open phone case...
to pull out the ball you must open the snap case totally.

I Just disassembly my HTC Snap s522 to clean the trackball today,
I can confirm you now guys..the htc snap s522 trackball is same type like blackberry 8310 trackball..so you can replace your trackball with BB 8310 trackball.
I just tried my friend Blackberry 8310 trackball and tried to running it on my snap..and it worked well.

you guys are looking too deep into this lol. this happened to me just push the ball in and move it around it will start working again

our snap use same type like blackberry trackball and sometimes the trackball will stop working till 6 months of use..(base on report at BB forum) the ball will become slick after 6 month.
you will need to know how to replace the ball (after 1 year service guarantee expired) anyway..thats why i concern about the trackball..
For me Being to know i can use the bb trackball on my snap is great..because cheap aftermarket BB trackball is everywhere in my country only $4 (include trackball house) compare to costly oem ball (will cost you about $20)
My tips:
You just need to keep the OEM trackball house and use the cheap aftermarket ball on it, you willl still has HTC OEM trackball performance on your snap.

There will be no need to document me taking apart the device, however, I will be taking pictures of the dust, the location of the leak, me cleaning the device, and an attempt to seal the leak. Alright folks - I took the time out of my day to open my Nexus One and clean off the dust underneath the screen. I took pictures. Here is my assessment after completing this daunting task.
PROS
-NO MORE DUST!!!!!!
-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MORE DUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!!!!
CONS
-Takes a lot of time (2.5 hours)
-There is now a smear on the bottom of the screen now - it can only be seen in direct sunlight
-Putting it back together is an ASS-PAIN. Such a pain in fact, by the time I was finished there were still 2 screws left, and 3 weird rubbery pieces that I left out.
The phone is back together and in excellent working shape
All in all, only do this if you have the amount of dust under your screen like I did. I am happy with the results but I think I want a BRAND NEW PHONE. Oh well.. Enjoy the pics.

Ok, most important thing to do. Make sure you are in a clean room! Maybe even a Clean Room. Otherwise you will end up putting more dust in than you take out. Cheapest way is to run a hot shower and let the place fog up and then settle to get the dust out of the air. But probably not a good thing to open your phone while it is still fully fogged up as you'll get condensation inside it

Yes, of course I'll take pictures of the dust BEFORE I disassemble the device. And then I'll take the AFTER pictures when it's reassembled.

yeah i cant stress enough to make sure you do this in a claean environment. i tried doing this with my nokia e71, and i never could get the screen lcd clean no matter what i tried! as i put it back together, little particles would just gravitate to it no matter what. i would wipe and try to quickly put it together, more dust. tried again, more dust. over and over.
here at work we have cleanrooms at a extremely high rating. if only i could use them to disassemble my smartphone.

if you get a nexus just press down on the bottom by the capacitive buttons. If the screen creaks or feels like it gives just follow what Uansari1 did and heat it with a hair dryer for a few seconds from like 5in. away and the press firmly around the screen. It will help to reseal.

Weird. I have called HTC. I am on my second exchange from them with the same issue. Dust under the screen. I have yet to be asked if my bootloader is unlocked and they have not said anything about my warrenty being void. I am getting my second replacement phone tomorrow from HTC. I called them last night about 6PM PST.

i dont think it was a common problem at all. but then i have seen threads with many people havng this issue. so far my nexus has not had this issue at all and its over 3 months old. so i dont know. but i DO know that if you look in the iphone forums, dust under the screen threads are all over there too. even windows mobile forums have the same threads. so it seems like its a problem with most touch screen phones.

They put a $500+ hold on your credit card. They won't tell you that you will lose that money if you've unlocked your bootloader. My guess is, they're hoping you've voided your warranty, sent in an unlocked phone, and now they keep the money. I also asked them how much it would cost to repair it... They estimated $179. BULL****.. I KNOW.

Nah. Theres alredy a big thread about this. They do put a $530 hold on your CC. But the hold is gone once they receive the phone. If they WANT to charge you the its usually a $28 repair fee or you have a choice of sending back the replacement phone.

I have my nexus for 3 months and there no dust under the screen. I have also a hero for 9 months and no dust there also. I saw the threads to maybe people work in dusty places or they have a loot of dust in their pockets

If it's any consolation, I've had my replacement N1 since the 3rd week it was out... as someone said, as soon as I got it, I heated it up and pressed firmly all around the screen to make sure it was tightly sealed. It's still dust free today.

I will have to do this when I get my replacement N1 from HTC. I didnt do it with the first replacement and now theres just after 4 weeks of use.

I have been selling a couple a week at the cell phone store I work for, and haven't seen this on a single one of those. I would say all in all, I have sold about 20 Nexus One now.
Personally, I think the issue goes back to these shipping out during January during the coldest period of the winter, even having freezing temps all the way into Texas... I suspect that that phones got cold enough that through contraction and added brittleness of the adhesive in a cold state, the seal broke.

Quick disassembly and potential touch unresponsive fix thread.

My Xoom has been rather unfortunate since I got it. I take it with me everywhere and that includes when I go out drinking with friends... It's taken many a fall. This has shown me what I deem a rather major flaw in the Xoom's design, internally. Allow me to demonstrate:

What you'll need to start... Pardon the crapola pics, I took more than this but the SD card on my Droid is going caput so most of them are just empty jpgs... Luckily the ones I salvaged were able to show the general idea. Anyways. The bit you'll use to take the back shell off is a T-5. The one I have is a T-5H but you don't need one of those, these screws don't have a pin in the middle. That's just for the first 2 screws and the screws that hold the plastic half on, you'll need a T-6 for every other screw in the Xoom. You'll also want some kind of sturdy plastic shims, I used clippings from an old debit card. The tool kit I have pictured can be bought at an auto parts store(I think I picked it up at O'reilly's).
Unscrew the 2 screws that hold the USB/HDMI/charging plate on, this will come off. Keep your screws in a secure location so you don't lose them!
That's what it looks like without the cover.
From here, slide the back cover down, you'll notice it stops at a certain point, just enough to expose the expansion card Moto will replace for the 4G upgrade. They've made this thing super easy to upgrade in the future. Slide the cover back towards closed just a tiny bit so the clips aren't resting on the stop.
Slide those 2 pieces of plastic into the grooves, as illustrated, until you can't push them in any further, you've disengaged the stops, now, with the plastic still there, slide the cover the rest of the way off.
Here's where my SD card crapped out but it's no big deal. Moving...
The touchscreen controller is located in the lower right hand corner of the Xoom if you're looking at it from the back. As you can see, mine is dislodged and there's nothing actually securing it inside the Xoom besides double stick tape. The Xoom has like 57 screws inside it and they couldn't screw the touchscreen controller down with even one? No, it's got an adhesive on the back and then it's just pressed onto the metal frame... Not secure in the slightest, even a slight drop can dislodge it. I've already tried to use a better double stick tape, but that came undone, hence I'm doing this write-up.
This is my new solution, using a thin piece of foam doubled over itself. It's about a 2" by 2" square, maybe 1/8" thick or so, couldn't tell you where I got it, I just had it laying around. From here, with it sitting there, it's kind of tricky to get the Xoom back together, what I did was start lining up the back cover with the foam squished down against the touchscreen controller, then slid the cover back to its fully closed position. My foam happened to stay in place during all of this. It may not be that easy for others, YMMV.
So I boot up my Xoom, test it out, touch works again.
I'm still not certain I'm going to stay with this solution but we'll see. For now it's working perfectly. Even exchanging your Xoom for a new one isn't going to resolve this until Motorola actually resolves it themselves, which I doubt they will. Hope this was helpful, I'm not interested in getting into the gory details of full disassembly, that's beyond my pay grade.
I also just realized this solved the problem I was having with the right half of my screen thinking any kind of touch was a multitouch and pinch-zooming constantly. Win.

edit3; so I took a deep breath and decided to investigate more... I have it open again, and holding down the actual connector seems to be improving the situation GREATLY. Im going to shift the foam from the controller to the connector and close it back up, and try again

EDIT: Following your "how to", I did exactly the same you did. The touch controller was a bit loose so I tight it with a small piece of foam. The hard part was putting the case back in place with the foam inside, but with a bit of patience I could eventually close the whole thing and now it's working again. Will see until when. Probably this device is one within many that fits in the planned obsolescence industry standard. FKU Mr. Bernard London.
EDIT 2: I actually have a big compulsion on acquiring new geeky stuff, but I hate to spend money because this is the industry standard. I hate to buy crap, and if I want to, I'll buy chinese stuff from Deal Extreme. Paying hundreds of dollars in goods from a well established and named company should be a warrant, at least, that it was built to last!
EDIT 3: I'l be moving soon to a Sammy Note 10.1. Hopefully not based on the planned obsolescence of the Xoom, but because I want it to!
EDIT 4: My XOOM "caput" for good. As I said before, I'm on Sammy note 10.1 and the XOOM will eventually go to repair.

Got my Xoom back, and it's great. Even after rooting, re flashing, opening, messing around, it was fixed for free, under warranty. It seems Motorola knows they have a case of premature obsolescence in this case.

Though probably not as easy as the S5, it still is technically removable and you can change the battery if you follow the directions, its in the Galaxy S6 manual on page 138

I wonder what's actually holding the glass cover on. It just says remove it. It can't just be laying on there. Maybe some type of adhesive that has to be heated. Either way, it seems that it will be easy to replace the battery.

Yeah I read it was some adhesive. I hear you just need to heat the phone to melt the adhesive (apparently there is a video someone doing it with a blowdryer [Not with a Galaxy S6 but with another phone]), the pull the cover off and go on from there...doesn't seem that hard to do

The battery is like this..... it is a non-removable type for you on street or newbies but if you do it carefully in home then it is actually removable.

Work in phone repairs.
Many phones require adhesive heating to get to the internals.
All the Sony's Z's, for example.

Thank god I can replace the battery relatively easily on the s6. I just saw a video of how to replace the battery on the HTC m8 and lol.

Yep any phone repair place worth their salt will have a precise setup already in place for this, I obviously haven't seen the new Galaxies but its about a 45 minute process on the Zs and they're considered by our team to be a real pain relatively speaking.

Two thoughts come to mind. First, I do battery-pull reboots of my S5 all the time (it black screen locks up due to a hardware issue) and I think most of us that flash ROMs have done the same a few times over the years. For instance, how would you get out of download mode if you don't flash anything? I hope that's addressed somewhere.
Second, I hope it comes with everything it needs for wireless charging out of the box. The S5 supports it but needs a coil inserted inside the back cover. I hope that all goes down easily because I've switched to completely wireless charging these days.

Ive used the one plus one, the LG G2, and the HTC one m7 all without removable backs. You just hold the power button. no matter where are you in the system partition, (recovery, system or download mode or fastboot mode) holding the power button will yield a reboot or a power off state. and to reply to this thread, its not an easy thing the average joe can do but i myself fix friends phones and have a heatgun so heating up the back glass to soften the adhesive and chnage the battery after the first or second year doesnt look like it'll be a problem. the problem i do have however is if the phone rejects the new battery. my LG G2 rejected the newer battery and that thing would die at 50% and not charge all the way. even after calibration. but back its original battery and everything worked fine again

(1) For phones with non-removable batteries, there are certain buttons held together to perform hard reset, which is pretty much the same as a battery pull. I think for Samsung devices is Vol Down + Home Button
(2) The S6 is capable of wireless charging out the box, but its confirmed it will not come with a wireless charger in the box. The wireless charger is sold separately for $59.99

The back will be adhered using some sort of adhesive, which is considerably difficult to remove by a user with little/no phone repair experience. As noted by the manual, those instructions "are only for your service provider or an authorised repair agent." By this logic, every smartphone (even the HTC One's sandwiched design) has a removable battery, just of varying process complexity.

If we're comparing Samsungs with Sonys, the S6 is more similar to the Z1 than it is to the Z3, because it also involves unscrewing a cover that covers the logic board. But in fact, the S6 is actually very similar to the S5 in that the back housing covering the internals also makes up the side bezel of the phone, albeit being disassembled screen-first, and it is not made of metal/glass. Otherwise, both the S5 and S6 have a mid-frame chassis on which the logic board is mounted on, covered by the back housing then the battery cover.

The Z3 in that video has been prepared in advance. Take a look at this video, and skip to 2:55:
The Z2 and Z3 both have that stretchy white adhesive holding the back down in the middle. If you expect the Z3's back cover to come off that easily, you're gonna have a bad time.

Out of curiousity, is it a special adhesive that cannot be purchased in stores? Say a laymen person was to remove it on his own by watching a YouTube video. How would he be able to put the cover back on tightly?

There are two ways of re-applying that adhesive:
1. Use a roll of black 3M tape, and cut it by hand and sticking it around the perimeter of the glass
2. Buy pre-cut double-sided tape that is made specifically for your application (recommended)
Pictured below is a typical roll of 3M tape, underneath a typical pre-cut tape:
The former may be able to be purchased in a hardware store, but the latter may not.
