[Q] How do you play Video?

This may sound completely stupid, but how do you play video on your xoom? I mean there isn't even a dedicated video app. How the hell do you release a tablet and expect it to compete with the I pad without a native video player or support for most video formats? I just transferred a couple of avi files that don't show up anywhere because there's no app to play them.

Theres an icon on your homescreen that says gallery. It plays movies as long as they are supported format. Try rockplayer universal it will play avis

QQplayer works for me too. Multichannel too. i havent tried mkv files yet
edit: it does play MKV files and with subtitles

Great just what I was afraid of. I have almost a 1TB of movies/videos/TV shows. So my only options are to convert them all or use a non tablet android app to play unsupported files. Thanks for the info though guys.

mkv high profile will not work on Xoom with any current player and I tried them all.

Ya i just tried a couple of files i had already converted for my moms ipad. a couple were DVDrips and those played pretty much fine using rocklayer. But one was a converted 1080p music video. The music video played fairly well but there was a noticeable difference in the frame rate from the standard def videos.it wasnt at all choppy but it wasnt as fluid as i would have liked. If this is what im going to have to expect from HD video then im definitely not sold on this tab.

It is certainly not what i expected. Hopefully it can be fixed with an update or app.

i downloaded dvd catalyst 4 online it was 9.99 (normally $20) and has a preset for motorola xoom
just load any dvd into your computer click go and when its done it will have you connect the xoom and transfer it
then click on the gallery app and there it is. the quality is great too

You can use Handbrake, a free video encoding program. I found that redoing h.264 high profile to h.264 main profile(see the link) and dropping motion estimation method to diamond, Subpixel ME & Mode Decision to 0, and avg bitrate to 4000 kbps makes for a lower encode time(20ish minutes for 1 hour on my i7 920 win 7 64bit). Excellent quality too vs original.

I'm attempting to convert a 720p copy of inception using handbrake right now. (6 hrs estimated time) what a pain in the ass. I set it to the APPLE preset. Which I'm hoping/assuming is what one would use for the ipad. Ill let you guys know how it turns out. If it does work won't be so bad as I can just set a bunch of files to convert in queue while i sleep.

Iceytea posted a handbrake preset for Xoom. I am trying it now and it is going much faster. 2 hour 720p movie took me 1 hour estimated with Apple universal preset and with this one 45 minutes. Can't comment on quality yet as it is still converting.

mkv works with stock player as well just have to convert it to baseline. High profile mkv works with nothing on the Xoom. I tried them all.

Dude, the SDK was just released this week. There will be a tablet optimized app within a month or so... your video files are not wasted.

im not sure im new at adding videos to android devices but if you download the software theres a manual in pdf form that explains everything it can do.

I have about 60 DVD's ripped so far using this same program. One thing to note though, The movies are a bit grainy when you do the preset Xoom setting. You might want to go into video settings and up the bitrate to 1750 or so if you really want your movie to look amazing on the Xoom.

Also you'll probably want to get AnyDVD. It breaks encryption and copy protection so that you can *ahem* backup your disks. It even fixes the disks that try to use false headers and what not to make the movie play out of order when you rip it. I've been using the 21 day trial version myself.

My first try at converting a 720p mkv high profile video is ok. It is not full screen like the youtube video indicates using the Xoom setting. The sound however is much louder compared to using the free handbrake application.
The application itself needs some work on the GUI. It is not very intuitive. Also, when it is running, it causes my computer to not be as responsive. Handbrake does not do that.
This is only my first test so results may vary with other files I try.

if you want better quality next to the xoom preset click modify and you can change the resolution and bitrate from a 1000 to 1750 like the previous post said. if a dvd has 2 versions there will be 2 different movies at the top one is for widescreen and 1 for fullscreen

What are you file sizes. Like example a 90 minute movie, 120 minute movie, 150 minute movie, and a 180 minute movie.

night at the roxbury was 600mb and thats 82 mins
but then inception which is 2 1/2 hours long is 1.1 gb
so maybe 500 mb for every 1 hour?

did you click manage next to the xoom preset and and change the bitrate or audio quality? ive burned 10 movies and all have had no problems whatsover

I did not do any dvd ripping but converted 720p mkv files into xoom format using catalyst. Quality was good and the file size dropped from 4.5gb to 1.2. No sync or stuttering issues. Really impressed.
Down side is it took the length of the movie to convert and like one poster said it lags my whole PC down.

Most common (non-DRM) video files, including MKV and ISOs. Just drag&drop them onto the program. If you drag folders, it will filter out the video files. Some MKVs might give some problems due to either having compressed-headers headers enabled (a recent change in MakeMKV, enable "fixmkv" setting in Global Settings > Advanced), or due to an unsupported (at the moment) audio format (truHD/e-ac3). Depending on the source of your MKV's most work though.

If you test-play your files on your PC, don't use Windows Media Player. WMP has sync-issues with MP4 files. if you use Quicktime or VLC, they will play fine.
As for the PC-slowdown, the conversion to h264 video is quite processor-intensive, and the software uses whatever power it can find. The faster the processor, the faster the conversions. If you use a single-core/cpu system, conversions tend to run at about the same speed as the length of the movie (select the xoom-fast profile to speed it up), but if you have a nice Core i7 Quad or 6-core, you can rip a 2 hour movie in about 20 minutes.

Why not provide an option to lower the priority? It sounds like the application is only usable now if you queue something up to run overnight.

It's there
Global Settings (enable "power user" mode) > Conversion > conversion priority.
By default it runs at "Normal" priority.

[Q] Local HD Playback and Clear.Fi

I'm still entertaining picking this up instead of the Asus Transformer but I saw two things recently on a video that discouraged me.
1) Local HD Video
I've heard MoboPlayer can tackle most formats so that helps a bit, but what is HD playback like on the device? Does it stutter? Does it have a hard time playing anything 720P or perhaps just 1080P.
For some reason, the lady had a really hard time playing 1080P on this thing.
2) Clear.Fi
I haven't seen a review that actually covered this feature. This is so important to me. I sold my iPad because I wasn't happy with it. I loved Cydia and having XBMC on it though because I could pretty much watch anything.
I was hoping Clear.Fi was going to make me forget about XBMC but I haven't seen any videos on Youtube or heard people discuss Clear.Fi too well.
What's your experience been like? Do you have problems streaming specific types of files? Does it convert on the fly or does it only stream specific file types?

I'm still considering buying the A500, one of the points I had noticed was a statement from Acer that 1080p playback on the device will be available via a future update. If I recall it's due June/July

to OP.....Yes no one has touched base on the clear.fi features but from my experience just mp4 files.......and it streams over your wifi network so there isn't any converting on the fly since it only plays mp4's but it will see avi's and wmv's but will not play it ....it says cannot play format unknown hopefully when rom developement progress may some how we would be able to watch other formats like video codec installs but it kinda sucks because all my vids need to be converted to work which is sad lol

Have you guys tried streaming with the help of a File Explorer and a video player like MoboPlayer.
I remember I was able to use the File Explorer on the Gtab to find videos on the network and then watch them with my choice of app.

Clear.fi is just a transport as far as I know. In essence, it's an app like upnp that sees shared compatible media across your network. It then allows you to use a media player on the device to view the file.
So for example, if you have Windows 7, media sharing enabled and put videos into your Windows 7 Video library, music in your Music library and Photos in your Pictures library, clear.fi will detect it all over your wifi network.
Because of this, I don't think it has any hard limits as far as what clear.fi will play as it depends 100% on what your tablet hardware and software will play. For now, that's just mp4s using a certain profile when it comes to videos. Some mkvs will play too as those are just wrappers. I've also seen a thread where someone has claimed to play some realplayer files I think. I myself have played mp4s that are smooth as silk in both 480 and 720p and I have had others that were extremely jerky. This has to do with profiles which I don't have the details on. I can tell you what I THINK it means, which is that mp4s come in several "parts" and that the newest one which compresses the most data is referred to as h264 which the device can't seem to play well at all. I converted a 720p movie and left everything in tact except for specifying the resolution needing to be up to 1280x800 and for it to be in MP4 format and it played flawlessly. I use a program called Freemake. I haven't attempted to convert any 1080p.
I have an intel quad core 6600 with 8GB of RAM and that took 40m so there's no way I'm converting my entire library however it's no problem converting a few movies and maybe a season or 2 of TV in prep to hit a roadtrip or do some sort of travel. I also have an Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll membership so I don't even really need to do any of this.
This isn't a brand limitation afaik, it is due to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. We know Tegra 2's hardware can support a myriad of formats, but we don't know if Nvidia has released a full Honeycomb dev kit yet and since Honeycomb isn't open like Froyo and GB, I'm not sure if it will be indicated on Nvidias site when it is released - for all we know it's already in the various tablet manuf. hands so we just have to be patient. So far the promises for updates in June by both Acer and Asus have me hoping that the 1080p upgrade is a sign of more supported formats and some fixes as well.

Yeah I've been having major problems getting HD files to play at all- converted 480p movie to mp4 had no problems, but can't get the same converter app to spit out a 720p to mp4 file except in mkv container format. Keeps insisting on 4:3 ratio on mp4 files. Once I get it figured out (if I do lol) I'll post the app & settings

Every Tegra2 device has problems with 1080p, 720p and anything encoded with h264 with main profile and high profile (so with almost any HD video out there). So it's a problem on A500 but also on Xoom, Trasnformer and other tablets too unfortunately.

Not every Tegra 2 device, every Tegra 2 device with Honeycomb.
Tegra 2 has been out since last year and a number of the ones shipped with Android 2.2 don't have an issue playing HD video in any format. For example, this is what the GTablet by Viewsonic supported:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Mind you, I don't know if the native resolution has anything to do with it as that has a 1024x600 resolution, I do know that it played 95% more files than my Iconia does.

Do you reckon the stuttering will be fixed with an update, and when do they usually come out?

I have been doing this to help stream content and it works like a charm.
1. Download UPNPlay from the market
2. Download Rock player from their web site (the one optimized for the tegra 2)
UPNPlay detects your server and will allow you to browse your contents and will play the video with Rock player. since Rock player supports a slew of codecs you should never have a problem playing anything. I even threw a .OGG file at it and the tablet played it with no problem. Also note that the quality (lag) of streaming HD content depends primarily on your home network.
The Clear.fi app sucks...

You still cant play mkv h.264 right? From what I have read on xoom and gtab forum its a hardware issue and not software.

Yeah I play mkv with no problem using this method. The problem is with honeycomb not with the hardware. Try it out and let me know if it works. Its been working for me.

I would agree on clear.fi sucking. I've been using Skifta with the standard WMP12 media sharing in W7 and it works great.

Its a hardware issue and every tegra 2 device has this issue. You source is not hd 720p if you can play it. Tegra 2 can only play substandard H.264 baseline profile videos and its still choppy. Most people are using MPEG4 to get reliable play back with tegra 2. Read any of the xoom & Toshiba tab forums.

I actually went to edit the post about it not being a hardware issue as soon as I posted it but couldn't because I had to wait due to me being new to the forum. I didn't have the proper information to make such a claim... Either way I have not ran across a video that I wanted to watch that I couldn't. I have been mostly watching anime on it (hi rez MKV) but I will try out an hd movie when I get home and report back.

ok so I checked out a few movies yesterday. All movies were in HD. 50% played fine while the other 50% played but with so really bad hiccups. The files I had less issues with were MKV that were displayed at 720 and were a smaller file size (probably not true 720P). 1080 video murdered the tablet lol. I have had 0 problem playing HD anime but again they are smaller file sizes. This method will play all non hd video without a hitch. Hopefully this issue is fixed shortly in the next update but that is me just being hopeful.

Hey guys this is a good video conversion program for virtually any device it comes pre-loaded with 1000's of device profilea. So if you want to convert videos to the closest possible specs for whatever device with good compatibility then try this program:
DVD Catalyst-PM if you need the program
*I also use it to convert 4-8GB MKV to AVCHD with no quality loss. It just remuxes the audio and makes it ready to burn to DVD or DVD-DL so its compatible in PS3 and other Blu-Ray players

Some "complex" MKV scenes doesnt play well with dice player. if they can solve that, I'd gladly buy the app. I've tried a lot of MKV files and none of them play smoothly without slowdowns for the entire duration of the TV show or Movie.

This used to be the case for me but since they released the codec on a separate app some mkvs play bad. Mx video player works pretty good with mkvs now. It's free and there's a optional paid version

Well I use this program to convert cause it gives me a smaller file size and compatible. So its just an option no one says you have to use this.

For Blu-rays I've found DVD Catalyst 4 inadequate because of sync issues. I've also read that by turning off Blu-ray Telecine will correct the issue but it doesn't. So, I had to look at other software to rip and convert my Blu-rays. Also DVD Catalyst 4 set my Kaspersky Antivirus Heuristic off and said it was performing in a way similar to a virus or trojan.
I've found that Aiseesoft Blu-ray Ripper works really well. It has video acceleration and will utilize you're AMD (app acceleration) or a NVidia video card with (Cuda technology). It's normally $39 but you can get it HERE for $23.40 with the coupon code 'SMRT-ADEK'. HERE is a guide as to what settings to use for the TF.
Another great software would be Pavtube Blu-ray Video Converter Ultimate which runs $65 but you can get it for $37.70 HERE with coupon code 'SOFT-K8TT'. It makes flawless videos for the TF using the XOOM settings. HERE is a guide on how. It has video acceleration just for NVidia video card. It will also let you select not only different subtitles but allows for 'Only allow forced subtitles'.
When I get home from work I'll upload some clips so you can test them on your TF. Also I suggest you use either Dice Player or MX Video for playback.
EDIT: This is the Pavtube settings. Right click on the picture and 'Save As' to download a short single chapter MP4 file to test on your TF.

I use xoom 1. A 4gb file usually gives a 2gb file. Great quality.

DVD catalyst is only for DVD ripping? I have over 3TB of movies 720p in my hard drive and want to have some movies on my xoom, the video format are for the most part avi but i also have others formats. Can i use DVD catalyst to decode mmy movies into a format that I would be able to watch on my xoom?

It does video files too.
Just try a few of your files to get your settings figured out, and after that, it is as easy as dragging your entire 3TB collection onto the program and tap Go to have dvdcat convert them all. It batches them automatically. With a collection that large, it might take a while before its done though.

I know but I will convert my video as I need them. I purchased the app and I tried to convert 5 720P videos to see how it would work. I used the option Xoom HQ2 because I am converting HD files and according to your post it is a faster option. I saved in my SD card and also in my Xoom's internal memory just to see which one would have a better performance.
What's happening is that when I tap on the video to play it looks like it will load but it never does, the video (all of them) would never load. The videos are about 2.3GB in size.
Any ideas of what I should do?

Actually HQ2 is (for 720p files) the profile that provides the best quality.
Based on your description I would suggest to switch video players. My guess is that you have a trial version of Dice Player installed that is expired.
The video files created by DVD Catalyst play great using the stock video player, and while there are quite a few market-players that have hardware support, some of their "plugins" can cause conflicts with the default video playback engine.

You're right, I had Vital player once I uninstalled work beautiful! Thanks for the great support. DVD Catalyst is well worth the money
