[OC] Tegrak Overclock v0.2.0.1 - Captivate Android Development

Hi Captivators!
Let me introduce a tool that helps to improve performance of your phone!
NEED ROOT!
Overclock can be harm to your hardware.
Use at your own risk.
I made a overclocking application for Samsung GalaxyS family.
It's designed to make overclock very easy on stock kernel and custom kernels (almost, not CM7, it has its own way)
Only needs to click 3 times to do it.
I know here is not app category, but based on kernel module.
so I chose "Development" category.
If I'm wrong, please move my thread to correct position.
Working perfectly on GalaxyS Froyo. already proved by many people.
I'm waiting Gingerbread for my phone (SHW-M110S).
App will support Gingerbread after I got it. Hey Samsung, give it to me!!!!
My wish is that all of GalaxyS users install this application on their phone... over 10 million..
But I know. It's just a dream.
Features
*Set cpu max frequency 1.0 to 1.3 GHz
*Show ARM core voltage at max frequency.

*Vibrant Plus (SGH-T959V, Froyo 2.2 / 2.2.1)
The maximum frequency that I found on my phone,
1.15 GHz, 1.25 V (stock voltage)
I experienced faster web surfing, more quadrant score, better Linpack result and more..
Hey, who don't want to make phone faster?
You can find a free version app in Android Market.
If you like it you can also buy ultimate version to help me (think as a donation ver)
UV(under voltage) and OV(over voltage) controls are only available at Ultimate version.
Sorry for that but I believe Free version is quite enough for most of you!
@1.43 Ghz, 1.375V + ext4 = quadrant score 2250, and fried my hands
Enjoy your enhanced phone with my application!

I have just read all threads that you told me. Yeah you are right at last comment. My app does not need custom kernel. In addition
no reboot, can change at runtime.
This is a big differrence from another apps.
Thanks for links anyway!

yes this app loads a kernel module much like voodoo control plus does. it adds overclock to any kernel instantly. unfortunately for the developer most of us have a favorite overclock kernel. but this will work for adding overclock to kb1 non overclock kernels that some members prefer to use for call quality reasons, and for people that love the stability of speedmod but want to experiment with faster clock speeds

onix is speedmod with OC/UV
EDIT: im just curious, ive traditionally undervolted my phone to increase battery life, what would be the purpose of increasing the voltage, seems as though it would be counter productive?

Well this is interesting. A good app for anyone who remains on stock and dosent want to load a custom rom but would like a little extra horsepower. The small percentage that people here make up may or may not use it, but to the rest of the world that is on stock, this could be really nice for them.

that is a gross over simplification. i believe onix has a lower kernel hz for battery life and additional patches though i never cared to keep track of specifically what features each kernel has.
also the ulk menu on speedmod actually works on all the options including jfs unlike onix

maybe you will have better luck in the epic and fascinate sections where there is no froyo source code so they have to choose between 2.1 overclocked and 2.2

Any chance to get this on 2.3.3?

yea but what are the values for 1.2ghz?
how long the battery hold with such speed?

Decreasing voltage increases battery life (obviously less juice = lasts longer) but also makes your phone less stable. The inverse holds true to a point. For every phone at every cpu speed, there is a range of voltages where your processor doesn't lock up and die instantaneously. Too much voltage makes it die, too little makes it shut off.
In the range where it works, however, the lower end is better for battery life, but if it's doing something towards the upper end of the freq range, it might still die, but the upper end of the voltage spectrum is pretty much good to go.

cant overclock my cappy at all raise it to 1.2ghz without any voltage change and
it says i need the full version...
whats the point in OC app that you cant use it?

[COMPARISON] Speedmod or Super Optimized Kernel

2 kernels for galaxy s froyo has recently intrigued me, namely [KERNEL][OC-UV-TINYRCU-BFQ-RAMZSWAP] Super Optimized Kernel (4_2 STABLE) (2010-10-19) by laststufo, and [KERNEL] SpeedMod Froyo 341MB RAM [K7 Test] [I1.2 Stable] by hardcore.
This is the speedmod kernel
and this is the super optimized kernel
I know speedmod sets the minimum clock speed to 250/300/500 depending on which one you flash and includes some fixes from voodoo and also the ULK, while the super optimized kernel includes ramzswap which decreases ram usage virtually, while adding the same implementations such as voodoo fixes and ULK.
So which one is better in your opinion? Do state your reasons.
-PS: I didn't really understood the meaning of Hz but now i kinda do thanks to Bos$. The 250/300/500 is not minimum clockspeed.
None of which. I prefer YA-OK, which gives me the most snappy feeling with a slight OC/UV that does not degrade system stability or battery life.

AFAIK, SpeedMod doesn't set the minimum clock speed like what you said. Read the thread for more info.
I would go for SpeedMod, haven't tried the other one yet.

I thnik you should read more about linux HZ parameter In this case HZ doesn't mean Hertz.
Great topic!
Guys tell me... Which one is better for better battery life?
YA-OK, SpeedMod or Super Optimized? (and best lag fix for stable and fast) all tweaks on?

well, here's mine for the day:
loads of emails, about 8 blutetooth phone calls, combination of 3g, wifi etc. i think the key is using superpower app which really makes a huge difference. mine is set to enable data every 30mins for 3 mins. also using BLN and noLED.
but most important is i've never had a crash or freeze with this combination of rom, kernel and baseband:
Samsung Galaxy S 8GB GT-i9000 (UK unbranded version), Class 10 16gb microSD
Baseband: ADJP3
Firmware: DocRomV8_Nude&Raw.ADJP5 (rev 4)
Kernel: zenkinz YA-OK build 30 OC 1.2ghz, Hardcore Tweaks, BLN ON, Overkill lagfix without binds, NoLED
Theme: JPA_V7_Androdena_Galassia_Proper_Optimised_AOSP_Ex tended_Circle

Sorry.. could U state exactly which lagfix U used in ULF?
There's 2 overkills.. JFS and EXT4.
I used JFS overkill and has freezes twice and moved down to JFS advanced.
I don't really like ya-ok. Looks like a more basic version of super optimized kernel.

Don't just look, feel it
Thx to tokyo, it's my fav kernel now.
Probarly the best kernel out there
Came from SpeedMod kernel from Hardcore, which is also extremely well functioning (I1.2 stable verison). However, on my SGS, the YA-OK kernel is way faster and the feel of the phone is simply astonishing.
I'm on DOC's 7.6.2 (WXJPA) and with adv. ext4 lagfix + IOsched tweak. Phone is truly flying and finally faster than I can press the buttons - awesome!
Can't say much about battery for YA-OK, but with Hardcore's SpeedMod my SGS typically lasted 2 days (best 2,5 day). And that is push email (work and gmail), 3G on, no wifi, no gps, no bt.
Let's see how this YA-OK will do on battery? I'll report back later on...
So far - extremly well done work Zenkinz

I'm using Speedmod K7-300Hz and with lagfix voodoo. (because of battery life)
There seems be a little laggy on my phone, I may think about other kernel, like YA-OK.
But battery lif is what I concern about.
Please let us know how about YA-OK on battery. Tks!
I've jumped to ya-ok, tried all the optimized kernels available. ya-ok feels the most smooth and balanced out, of course that's just me. you guys try it for yourself! lol
can't test battery yet until tomorrow
ps. shouldn't really post this in dev though.

[KERNEL] Clemsyn Version 11 PimpMyGtab Underclocking control

Releasing my kernel ver10 which has NO OVERCLOCKING but has Undervolting. I'm pretty happy with the speed of Tegra 2 and I think there are a few advantages in keeping our speed in stock. Advantages IMO are as follows
1. Better Battery life
2. Less heat
3. Stability (unless it is too undervolted)
Update 4/25/11
Releasing PimpMyGtab and My latest kernel ver 11 with no Overclocking, just stock Speeds..Underclock using PimpMyGtab
Here is the link on how to use PimpMyGtab
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1018411
** If you get a scaling_governor error upon starting PimpmyGtab. It means you need to set your governor by going to Terminal and typing echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor or by installing CPU Master and choosing powersave in governor.
BIG THANKS TO CPASJUSTE for the app and kernel codes.
BTW, If you like my work, don't hesitate to buy me a beer
If you ike PimpMyGtab, make sure you buy PimpMyCPU (Source) from the market by Cpasjuste
Thanks.
Nice. I'm not a fan of overclocking, however undervolting DOES interest me. As soon as I get an opportunity, I may try this out.
Curious, what's the stock voltage?
OK, LMK how it goes.

Well I tried it out real quick, it works well (haven't verified battery life changes), but I had some questions:
Is there anyway to set the voltages explicitly? SetCPU didn't work with it (couldn't even change the freq or scaling governor).
I forgot your kernel doesn't support mounting the internal SD over USB. Is that something that will be fixed soon (assuming it's actually broken)?
I won't have my tab for a few weeks, sending it in for warranty replacement. So I won't be able to do further testing.
Thanks for the great work!
Hello clemsyn,
Try it out and battery life is soooooo gooood ... lot better than the OC 1.5GHZ one, of cause it run slower, but it's where i came to ask, if you could release one with the same voltage but for 1.2Ghz (which i guess it's stock speed)?
Many thanks for your hard work

Thanks. Right now I'm tryingout the 700-900. Quadrant dropped from 2350 to 2150 going from ver9 to the UV.
I've been using the original kernel posted in this thread for a little while now. It has some strange slowdowns when the tablet first boots (from being powered off), but after that it runs great. Have not had any freezes, so it seems stable. Quadrant scores are ~ 2300.

so there no kernels to help oc, just use setcpu tor similar apps?
on other phones u need kernels to oc. just curious if this phone i different
The default kernel won't overclock, setcpu can perflock the stock HTC Sense based kernel and allow underclocking for better battery preservation.
You can download chad's incredikernel, lou's kernels or ziggy's for Sense-based kernels that can be overclocked.
I don't know about the widget but on setcpu I have mine set to the highest with performence settings.
wao im confused know,do i need a kernel.thanks...
A lot of kernels have oc capabilities, but you still need SetCPU to tell it what speeds to run at and such. CM7 has this functionality built right into the CM Settings.
It will depend on what ROM you're using, and what kernel you're using.

Depending on what version they are. IDK what version the new kernels are but the sense 1 kernels are 2.6.32-17. IMO overclocking an incredible doesnt offer that much of a performance gain, it can only be bumped up by about 150-200mhz as compared to the other devices which can do 300-700mhz.

All Froyo-based ROMs should be covered by those three kernel builders. Unfortunately those also are about the only active kernel devs that are supporting Sense-based kernels, the majority are AOSP.
Has anyone thought of tweaking with the voltages on the incredible kernels. I also own a Nook Color and they thought 1.1 was the max for us until dal messed with the voltages and a few other things under the hood. If it gets us gains with running features on newer roms (sense 3.0) it might be worth exploring the possibilities.
dont forget my post please. I need more information, thanks..

[Q] Is it possible to overclock above 768mhz?

just curious really as my phone never gets warm or anything running at 768mhz the battery life is also pretty good.
hey,
i don´t think so, because in the worst case your phone will take damage. But this ~770 mhz are about 250 more then before. Im happy with this xDDD
that is true haha, i just dont see it doing much harm if the phone will run stable higher at the same voltage or the tiniest bit higher
No, that's the limit of the MSM7225. (Achieved by adjusting the PLL to its max, any higher will overrun the limits of the chip, and cause it to most likely fail)
i would like to know, if its very bad for the phone, if you let it permanently run with full speed. Ok, if it will get very hot.. thats clear, but is it bad if you have the 77mhz and it is for example in silent mode, or when you listen to some music. Should you ever take some possible speed away, if its not need? (thx)
The hardware life will probably be reduced. By how much, it cannot be said definitively, but, I am pretty sure that by the time the hardware fails because of overclocking, the phone will have been retired long back.
What you are requesting (Dynamically changing speed) is exactly what Speed Governors (Performance, Internative, OnDemand etc) do. If you are on CM7, use Smartass Governor, because it's the "smartest". If not, then use Interactive governor.
i use ginger yoshi... and sometimes it sais that the sd was removed. Could overclock be a reason for this?
I dont think so. I got the same issue once, and formatting the SDCard fixed it.
ok i will try it thanks

To use overclocking and governers on sense roms, oc kernel and application like setcpu are must. Setcpu has governers too.

Yes, it does, and it is overclocked to 710 MHz, by default.

[Arrows - Guide] Best Aosp GB & ICS Roms [Updated - 1/22/12]

Feel Free to post and give feedback ^_^
Also feel free to Vote the thread ^_^
Q&A is in Post 2
_____________________________________
Hi Everyone, Arrow here and this is my guide to find what is the best aosp setup for your evo or android. It is true when people say "every phone is different." However there is an average of people that get similar results. At the moment people have different interest such as some people want performance and some want to improve their battery life. Of course certain people want both but only some get both.
*Remember what i put here is an average and may be different on your evo*
AOSP GB ROM'S: Ok so to start off, these are aosp roms still being updated as of now.
CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) - The most famous aosp rom out there, all or almost all other aosp roms are based off of this rom. This rom has a stable rom and experimental nightly builds. Anyone will tell you that you can't go wrong by choosing this rom. and believe me you will enjoy it.
CyanogenMod 7 Thread
Miui - This rom has the longest battery life and is very customizable. This rom is based off of CM7 and is an excelent rom. However unlike CM7 this rom does not have 4g so if you are willing to sacrifice 4g then believe me this is your rom.
Miui Thread
Gingerbread Evo Deck - Ok so although CM7 is amazing decks gb rom has said to be the exact same thing but giving off better battery life. other then that it is pretty much the same thing with some minor tweaks and some bloat ware removed.
Gingerbread-Evo-Deck's Thread
Xplod E4G - Team Nocturnal designed this rom and it is pretty much CM7 with the Sony Launcher + their apps. This rom will give your phone a nice cool feel that other people don't have. If you like a lot of eye candy then get this rom because it is CM7 just with a different look and feel.
Team Nocturnals Xplod E4G RLS1.2

using Xplod: there's a 50/50 chance the new tiamat kernels [4.0.7+] may not boot, in that case, they should use 3.3.7.

ICS(mod7) - Team Blaze designed this rom and you can consider this rom like Xplod E4G, a rom just like CM7 with some minor tweaks but with a different look and feel. None the less this rom has something very special this is the closest rom to being like ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich). I 100% support this rom because they are doing the best they can to make this rom look and run as smooth as ICS. so if you want to look like your ahead of the game definitely get this rom.
ICS(mod7) Thread
AOSP GB Kernels: These are three kernels that i know of, if you know of more please let me know and i will add them.
Tiamat 4.1.0 - This is the latest kernel made by Tiamat and this is the only aosp kernel still being updated. This kernel on average gives people great performance but lacks on battery life. The main Governor for this kernel is SmartassV2 which is a balanced governor, good to turn on your phone and good to use on a normal day to day bases. For this kernel i do recommend using this governor. It does have SBC and Non-SBC kernels. *Side Note* (Some people say Tiamat 3.3.7 works better for them and is also known as the LEE Kernel because it was awesome like Bruce Lee and looks like Lee backwards [337])
Tiamat Website I also put the Zips in the Attachment (At The Bottom)
Savaged-Zen - This kernel is no longer being updated, however it is still amazing this kernel seems to be Tiamat's competition. Where Tiamat lacks on battery Savaged-Zen does not. However it's performance is not as good as Tiamat. This Kernel comes in two version BFS (Brain F***ed Scheduler) and CFS (Completely Fair Scheduler). BFS is said to give better performance and CFS is the normal kernel. This kernel only comes with SBC however you may download "SVZ Manager" which will allow you to turn SBC on or off. The main governor for this kernel i believe is on demand However i use smartass and a lot of people us InteractiveX.
Savaged-Zen CFS sbc I also put the Zips in the Attachment (At The Bottom)
Savaged-Zen BFS sbc in attachments (At The Bottom)
SVZ Manager I also put the Zips in the Attachment (At The Bottom)
GoDm0de - This Kernel was made by toastcfh and is no longer being updated. It is non-sbc and in my opinion definitely the best non-sbc kernel. This Kernel has insane battery life and a pretty good performance. If you do not want to use an sbc kernel i recommend for you to 100% use this kernel. The Governor for this kernel is set on on demand (i think) however i got the best battery/performance using Interactive.
GoDm0dE Kernel I also put the Zips in the Attachment (At The Bottom)
AOSP ICS ROM'S:
ICS rom by: the_Plattypus and it is still in Alpha testing. however the development for this rom is moving really fast so hopefully a beta will come soon.
EVO 4g Ice Cream Sandwich from source
ICS-evo-deck: This Rom is by kushdeck, After testing out Decks ICS Pre-Alpha 4 & 7 rom i conclude that although it is a alpha it can easily be used as a day to day rom. extremely fast and very snappy. only thing that i found not working was the camera. (Now on Alpha5)
[ROM][ICS][1-11-12][WIP] ics-deck-evo [alpha5]
All Decks ICS Pre-Alphas
All Decks ICS Gapps
AOSP ICS Kernels:
Jaredthegreat ICS - jared has the most advanced ics rom which is in beta 2 but does not have a working camera to check this rom go here:
[ROM's] -ICS- 4.0.1-4.0.3>[AOSP]<--~B.2.0~
Will post them when they are released!!!
Rom Manager/Kernel Manager:
Rom Manager: This is an app from the android market and is extremely useful for pretty much anything. you can back up your rom, you may go into boot loader and you can check if certain roms such as "CM7 Nightlies" have been updated. However people do prefer Amon Ra for flashing, which is another plus of Rom Manager it allows you to flash alternative recovery, which will flash Amon Ra for you.
Kernel Manager: This app was working before but has stopped now, however if it does start working again what it had was pretty much all the kernels that you needed for any rom. this app would allow you to flash a new kernel immediately by going to the kernel you want to flash.
Reserved
Q&A:
Q: What is SBC?
A: SBC stands for super battery charger. SBC is trickle charging, It stops your battery from dropping from 100% to 90% right when you take it off the charger. Some say that it harms your battery but i haven't seen any harm and plus it only costs $5 to get a new battery on Amazon.
Q: How to set up and flash your roms and kernels?
A: well my friend "Crossrocker" made a guide for this with everything you need. so just click to go to his thread. [GUIDE||Oct/23]Best AOSP(CM7|Decks|MIUI) configuration.
Q: What is the difference between governors?
A: This Thread by "RJackson" explains it all:SetCPU governors (explained)
But if you're too lazy to click it here they are:
As explaind by RJackson:
ondemand - Available in most kernels, and the default governor in most kernels. When the CPU load reaches a certain point (see "up threshold" in Advanced Settings), ondemand will rapidly scale the CPU up to meet demand, then gradually scale the CPU down when it isn't needed. - SetCPU website
conservative - Available in some kernels. It is similar to the ondemand governor, but will scale the CPU up more gradually to better fit demand. Conservative provides a less responsive experience than ondemand, but can save battery. - SetCPU website
performance - Available in most kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "max" set value at all times. This is a bit more efficient than simply setting "max" and "min" to the same value and using ondemand because the system will not waste resources scanning for the CPU load. This governor is recommended for stable benchmarking. - SetCPU website
powersave - Available in some kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "min" set value at all times. - SetCPU website
userspace
A method for controlling the CPU speed that isn't currently used by SetCPU. For best results, do not use the userspace governor. - SetCPU website
Interactive - The 'interactive' governor has a different approach. Instead of sampling the cpu
at a specified rate, the governor will scale the cpu frequency up when coming
out of idle. When the cpu comes out of idle, a timer is configured to fire
within 1-2 ticks. If the cpu is 100% busy from exiting idle to when the timer
fires then we assume the cpu is underpowered and ramp to MAX speed.
If the cpu was not 100% busy, then the governor evaluates the cpu load over the
last 'min_sample_rate' (default 50000 uS) to determine the cpu speed to ramp down
to.
As explained by MDJ:
SMARTASS GOVERNOR - is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works - by taking over the idle loop - is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the "old" minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 245Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 245 - why?! - it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 998/245 kernel, it will sleep at 245. No need for sleep profiles any more![/QUOTE]
As explained by teh roxxorz:
Lagfree - like the performance governor. It will scale the cpu to higher frequencies when needed, but not to 100% like performance, so you'll get a lil better battery out of it
SmartassV2 - A smarter smartass governor. Code was re-managed/removed to make it more optimized, and have better scaling performances
InteractiveX - a better interactive governor I believe; low scale cpu settings, for texting, browsing, ect, nothing intensive. I wouldn't use it for emulators, ect.
Q: Do you need PRL/Profile/Radio updates? Do you need to go back to sense based to do these still?
A: No you don't have to go back to sense to do these and you don't have to do these because Rom's will come with what you need. None the less if you would like to update your radios here is a thread by "Calkulin" where he keeps the latest radios updated: [ Radios ][ 9-5 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions
Q: Does HDMI mirroring work on these roms?
A: As of this moment Miui and CM7 both have HDMI mirroring working, and sense all the other ones are cm7 with some tweaks they as well have HDMI working however from what i have read the only one that has not had problems with HDMI is Decks Gingerbread Rom
Q: Are all other major features (4G (except for Miui), bluetooth, front & rear camera, GPS, apps such as Netflix, Skype, Google Voice, Sprint Visual voicemail) all working at least as well as on a Sense or stock ROM?
A: Yes everything is working, however on CM7 and i presume on some others you also have to flash a gps fix which you can get from this thread: [GUIDE||Oct/23]Best AOSP(CM7|Decks|MIUI) configuration. and the Voicemail seems to have some issues for some people but works flawlessly on Decks with it's gapps + Voicemail which you may also get from this thread: [GUIDE||Oct/23]Best AOSP(CM7|Decks|MIUI) configuration.
Q:My wifi is connecting/disconnecting after a second, what should i do?
A: This answer was given to me by "teh roxxorz." This has nothing to do with your rom or kernel, do this:
Back up everything into Titanium Backup
Boot into recovery
wipe cache, Dalvik, and pretty much everything
reflash your rom, kernel and gapps (or if you would like to check out some other roms and kernels just click on the link in my sig)
once you've set up your phone download Titanium Backup from the market
in titanium backup restore all your apps ONLY!!! (don't get apps w/ data - only get apps, and do not get system data)
after this your wifi should be working just fine
Q: I am having wake issues?
A: Here is a Guide made by JBabey[FIX] Wake Issue (Android OS) - Combination of Radio/PRI/NV/Wimax/GPS !Solved!
Q: Can i make my 3g speed faster?
A: Yes, This answer was given to me by teh roxxorz:
You need to flash a sprint sense rom. I emphasize sprint because it won't work on the sense 3.5 roms, as they're all ports of other non sprint roms.
1. Flash sense rom
2. Obtain your msl, download msl reader from market, use it, write it down
3. type in ##3282# , input your msl (you can get this from the app msl reader)
4. Click edit mode > advanced
5. Scroll down to HHTD proxy port and address
6. Change the proxy port to 0 and proxychange the address to 0.0.0.
Q: How can I fix my GPS?
A: This answer was given to me by teh roxxorz:
- flash a sense rom
- open up the dialer
- Type ##GPSCLRX# or ##4772579#
- Your enter your MSL at the prompt
- Your phone will soon reboot > done
Q: Is there a guide like this but for sense roms?
A: Yes if you are looking for a sense guide rather than aosp then check out this thread by tropicalbrit
Q: What is your setup at the moment?
A: Rom - Decks 4.0.3 Pre-Alpha 7 ICS Rom
Kernel - Stock
Governor - Conservative
CPU Max/Min Frequency - 729/128
IncrediControl (app) - (-100) [I get to (-100) by first doing (-75) and leaving it there for 3 days and then I do another (-25)]
Car-o-Dope (CoD) setup
Nice setup. Thanks

And any reason you were gona message me?
