Returned My 10.1v

Just returned my Galaxy Tab 10.1v to Vodafone Ireland.. had it a total of 3 days.. received 2pm Monday by 9am this morning.. the glass was lifting from the body of the tab at the bottom Left Hand corner.. the glue wasn't holding up.. if it was that bad after 3 days there was no way I was gonna keep it..
I've asked for a full refund.. I might wait now for the 10.1 release or try the Eee Pad Transformer..

Unfortunately have couple a few of the same complaints about the screen popping out of the bezel with the 10.1 Google IO tablets as well.

I have done quite a bit of research and I get surprised that people are comparing the Transformer with the Tab 10.1. It appears to me the tab is a clear winner, but I will plead ignorance on this.
What are the reasons you would buy the transformer over the tab?

pros of transformer
1. keyboard dock with extra battery, ports and trackpad
2. ports on the device(usb, hdmi, sd card)
3. cheaper
4. not made by samsung(well okay, that's just personal preference I guess)

to me, the transformer is the clear winner. however, I got a tab for free at i/o and, of course, it's great. if I was going to pay for it though, I'd go with the transformer.

from what I've seen, the display on the transformer is pretty good. maybe not as good as the galaxy tab but still. and I don't know about the build quality.. my i/o tab is all cheap plastic(just like everything samsung makes) and it's already coming apart(see last post). however, it is thinner. I will give you that one. The 10.1v isn't, but the 10.1 is. I was kind of including that as part of the weight thing though. I don't see the thinness being a big advantage. it's not like I'm going to be keeping it in my pocket or anything. maybe that's just me though.

I had a Transformer and returned it in anticipation for the Galaxy Tab. However here are some of the pros I see with the Transformer.
+ $100 cheaper
+ microSD slot (might have to buy an expensive 3G Galaxy Tab for micro SD)
+ mini HDMI port
+ micro USB port
+ Keyboard dock converts tablet to netbook and extends battery to 16 hours.
I'm giving up a lot just for the Galaxy Tab's lighter weight and sleeker look. I think the Transformer is just ugly. I hope the Galaxy Tab is worth it.
But I'm about to cancel my JR.com pre-order. Think I might be safer just buying it from Best Buy in case this turns out to be yet another tablet that doesn't live up to expectations and has to be returned.
Hate to say it, but I want a tablet that feels like it's quality built. The Xoom felt quality, just way too heavy. The Transformer felt and looked cheap. The Samsung GT looks quality, but... crossing my fingers. Hope these Android manufactures don't make me go out and buy an iPad 2 after all this waiting.

I hate sounding like one of "those" people, but if I have a laptop then why would I want a keyboard for my tablet? Anyway, that's my personal preference and I understand it's a big reason people want the transformer, but for $150 more it's just out of the question for me.
Ports? The tab, while it does not have specific HDMI/USB ports, will have HDMI & USB connectors. Unfortunately you'll have to shell out some bucks (I'd guess around $30) for an HDMI connector.
The official (non-IO model) 10.1 may have an SDCard slot, but no one knows for sure, yet.
Weighs less and you missed that it is much thinner. Form factor is huge when it comes to a device that you're holding during 90% of its usage.
I dunno -- if the tab wasnt coming out I would be getting a Transformer. I'm just not sold after seeing the transformer in action.
And as an Android enthusiast it pains me to say this, but having TouchWiz layered over Honeycomb may boost the user-experience. I played with the Xoom for a week and really thought that if a manufacturer layered a UI/UX over top of Honeycomb it would have been a MUCH better experience.

So build quality issues like all the other tablets out there now...check

iPad2 here I come!!! Just gotta find a good microsoft office app and it is the perfect tablet! Definitely superior to all the current tablets or there now (please don't quote hardware specs, if the hardware and software worked well together there wouldn't be all these threads out on android tablet forums)

weighed mine on digital kitchen scales 574g.. anyway at the beginning of the thread i said was gonna go for the transformer... after watching hundreds of youtube videos on it.. I have changed my mind.. will wait and see what the 10.1 is like in terms of quality and price (3G version when it's out)

I have seen a few questions on this forum asking if they should get the TF or wait for something like the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Well, I made a video comparing the two tablets. In the end, it's still HoneyComb - what you get is a different hardward, style design superior to Ipad2, thinner, sleeker, lighter than any tablet in the market now...but the same price Ipad2
Anyway, I almost pulled the trigger and but...wondering what I'm doing here, first Gtablet, sold it for losing $100 (to use for 2 months), now TF,,,I'm very pleased with TF and with GalaxyTab 10.1,,,what will I get? probably little different CPU, graphic, and weight, form design...TF serves me well for what I need to do while in my couch or on my bed!

As a tablet there's not much between them,its the dock and the extra functionality you get with that ,which makes the TF stand out from any other android tablet,long form writting, extra storage,extra battery and use of usb devices are great but being able to charge my mobile from the dock wins it hands down for me

If you want the #2 iPad on the market the Galaxy is your best bet. If you want the best Android tablet on the market then the Tranformer is it. Why? Android is about an alternative to iOS for those who want more functionality from their tablets. Looks like Samsung shot right at the iPad2 on specs, and aimed just slightly higher but not too far. Slightly thinner. Slightly larger battery. 3mp camera? Sounds like a spec picked just so in 6 months they can come out with a new model carrying a 5mp camera, then 6 months later an 8mp camera.

what is up with ASUS screen? it is supposed to be IPS superior to any other? I think they did something similar with color profiles on AMOLED screens to Tab too. as reviewer mentions, colors look more saturated. do you think ASUS would step up the competition, and change it in future updates to match color profiles of Samsung?

Who is to say that Samsung's saturated colors are "better?" Ideal would be an end-user control like the one you get on your TeeVee set, but generally, you want your display to represent some kind of baseline reality. Samsung picks a more vivid one. I guess it's up to the consumer to choose.

I hope not the Samsung is oversaturated. It is unnatural. Try displaying a persons picture on the screen

Well, apparently the 10.1 Galaxy Tab is using new SuperPLS screens which is a step above the IPS panels.
Although, until three days ago this was completely unknown to me as well. Nobody seems to be excited by this screen, Samsung isn't even making a big deal out of it. I don't get it, the SuperAMOLED screens on the Galaxy S phones of last year were such a big part of the phone's marketing, but nobody mentions the Tab's screen.
But I agree with others, if SuperPLS is as saturated as Sammie's SuperAMOLED panels then I'm not sure I'd want one. The Galaxy S phones look amazing when your first pick them up but I actually dislike the overly saturated colours, it seems unnatural and hurts my eyes almost.

sometimes the over saturation is a good thing. but i guess it just depends on the consumer as someone stated. i remember that on the nexus a dev was able to build an app that adjusted the colors of the screen. maybe if there was something like that for the TF then we could tweak it a little. overall im pleased with the screen, you only see a difference when you put it right next to the galaxy tab. but on its own, it looks great.

Thanks for the compare, although I think to be relevant to most here, the Samsung needs to be updated to 3.1, as that's on the retail product. An updated compare would be helpful.
Also on many people's mind is the Tegra 2's lackluster performance on high profile 720p MKVs. Samsung has traditionally had strong multimedia support, as to wit its 5" PMPs as well as the 7" GalTab. I'm curious if Samsung has added native support for MKV for the native player, or is it still limited to only MP4 support. Again, a compare with a retail 3.1 version would be appreciated.

Meh the screen isn't that big of a deal. The only thing the Tab has going for itself is its size. But I need a MicroSD so I went with the TF.

I hope Asus never gives us the Vivid mode on the 10.1. I prefer the colors on the TF. Its like the TVs at Best Buys where all are in Vivid mode aka cartoon mode.....Nasty

I think the screen on the Transformer looks pretty washed out. At least next to the 10.1. I will be returning my TF for it. The TF is an awesome tablet but I like the idea of a lighter and thinner tablet. Will I miss the SD card slot? Actually, no. I took my 16GB out of the TF a couple days ago for some reason and have yet to need it. The remote desktop client has been more than helpful for when I want to watch a movie or netflix.
A few other reasons for me choosing the 10.1 are the fact that I can purchase an adapter today to use for microSD, HDMI, and USB. The USB adapter is most important as I already have a beautiful Acer Timeline 13.3 laptop. With the TF, I couldn't get a USB port without turning it into a laptop. One other reason off the top of my head is the fact that I will be able to USB charge it from my computer while I use it. This was a big let down for me when using the TF.
It may sound like I'm bashing the TF pretty hard right now, but I really do like it and for the price, it still can't be beat.

The thing about the GT is it's just another Android tablet, minus sd card slot, minus USB ports, minus full keyboard functionality.
The only plus it had is added saturation, but that's like adding saturation to a good photo just because you want to change it, not because it needs it.
All this and minus $100/£100 in you wallet.
I don't know why people would even consider one over a Transformer

Is that really a fair comparison?
The Transformer doesn't have a full SD slot or keyboard unless you pay an additional $150 for the dock, which will transform your Transformer into a thicker, heavier and decidedly un-tablet like device.
People need to dial down their fanboy tendencies up in here, seriously.

it's fair comparison and that's why the name is Transformer, but ppl are given choice not to unleash the 'beast'

Go for the Eeepad or wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1?

Im conidering a tablet but torn between the ASUS eeePad Transformer and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Without doubt the Samsung has the wow factor, but they're making such a hash of releasing it by all accounts. Hardware specs don't appear to be fully finalised, it appears the thing version won't have a memory card slot, the camera only 3MP and it's still not released and there's no release date for the UK.
The ASUS meanwhile according to the videos I've seen have excellent sound which should be good for media playback.
Im worried about the lack of 3G but remember I could use my Galaxy S as a WiFi hotspot for those times I need to use this on the go.
The ASUS is released, has 3.1, some decent features and a great price.
Is there any reason I should wait for the Samsung and not get the ASUS? Is there any other tablet that comes close for the price? I was looking at the Xoom, and the Flywer and everything in between, but they all seemed to be much more expensive.
What do you guys think?
Does the Eeepad also support DivX playback?

For divx it's ok but for HD videos all the tegra 2 tablets can't handle them very well.
Just want to be sure you won't expect much about it. That said, the transformer has a nice ips screen but with some bleeds (related to ips technology) and a microsd slot. The galaxy tab have no microsd slot.
The sound on the asus is not very good, I can't speak about the galaxy tab on this front.
Performance wise all tegra 2 tablets are more or less the same what you should look at are expansion ports, form factor and screen. So ask yourself what you want.
Hope that helps.

bottom line is if you want android but with an ipad formfactor in the sense of no built in expandibility but thin and light then go samsung.
If oyu want something that is less expensive, had HDMi and microsd built in, is cheaper, and has optional keyboard dock turning it into a longer battery life android netbook with usb ports and full sd card slot, then Go Asus. Asus however will be a bit heavier and thicker and from my experience the build quality will suffer a bit compared to the samsung.

I just read the Anandtech Review on the Galaxy Tab 10.1.The 10.1 wins with its thin form factor, weight and IPAD like contours, while the TF beats out the 10.1 on all benchmarks and battery life and the convenience of the dock.

I'm in the same situation as the OP with regards to the Samsung and the Asus (I've recently returned a TF), I'm now waiting for Samsung to release definitive specs and price here in the UK. I've just returned from my local PC World, they've no news on the GT 10.1 at all. Whilst I was there I had a look at the range of tablets on display and I have to say the Transformer looked better than I remember.

Yep, form factor definatley goes to Samsung, along with build quality.
As for Asus, its still a great looking tablet, and comfortable to hold in my opinion. Has the HDMI, memory card slot, ability to be docked, and is $100 less. Its sort of a no brainer for me, but depends what you want to do with it.

For some of the reasons mentioned by aibo I would wait for a tegra-3 tablet. This is especially true if you are interested in any type of HD media. The more I play with my TF the more I realize the tegra-2 is just underpowered trying to play any kind of HD content with HD sound. Don't get me wrong I love my TF and knowing what I know now if I really wanted to wait I would also wait for a tegra-3 Asus.
See the should I wait for the tegra-3 thread fo even more reasons to wait.

All the more reason to get the Asus. Get base model which is 399. Then next year give it to family or sell it for 200 and get a kalel tegra 3
This way you get to enjoy a tablet for a year and the 100 you save plus selling your used Asus will get you most of the way to the latest and greatest.

And +$100 more. Is it really worth it? The TF101 is pretty light as it is already.
With +$100 more you can get yourself a TF101 32GB AND A MicroSD slot whereas $499.99 Galaxy Tab 10.1 you'll get 16GB without a MicroSD.

Also, according to Anandtech, 10.1 doesn't have as much glare on the screen as the Transformer. I won't go into color saturation as that's preference of the user.
Too much speculating and assumptions in these threads. I doubt many here have actually had both in hand.

I meant more along in this specific thread. Perhaps OP should also post this in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forums as well as there are some users that have jumped ship from the Transformer to the 10.1 to get others opinions instead of Transformer users that haven't tried the 10.1 yet.

no expandable memory is a deal breaker!!! i can easily fill up 16gb and i don't want to pay the 32 gb price!!!

I've owned both and trust me...the weight difference is a major advantage for the Tab...MAJOR!

Not entirely true. It's just not built in. Sure you'll have to buy the adapter for it, but it is indeed expandable.

no hdmi is a deal breaker also.

I am considering to go for transformer.

price was the big thing for me. $100 is a good chunk of money for something of similar specs.

I feel the Transformer screen isn't very sensitive and feel i have to press pretty hard sometimes. Is the Tab any better?
Also I feel the Tab may have more of development community.

This is a question for the general area really, but we are also very nice here in the SGT10.1 threads, so I will also answer your question. Touchscreen is awesome in responsiveness in my opinion, and I like it a lot more than the transformer. Also, the devs we have here, a couple so far, have been working on other devices, like my Captivate, and they are all top notch. Lots of breakthroughs in the last 3 days and we are awaiting a brand new kernel which will make this thing fly

Yeah sorry to throw it in DEV but I figured it included questions regarding ROMs and such My bad.
I can still return the Transformer to Amazon and get the Tab but I want to make sure it's worth keeping. Have they fixed the lag issues and such with the 3.1 update?

I don't own a transformer but the tab is amazing. The screen is amazing. And the dev support is already pretty heavy after only a fee days. The update for touchwiz also looks neat. If ur happy with stock honeycomb I think there is an option but its always good to have more then one choice.

This is my list too. I owned it for about 2 weeks and returned it as well. I am not looking back. The speakers on the transformer suck compared to the 10.1. Display's are both good, but the TF has horrible light bleed, build quality is awesome. This will be the first device I've purchased in a long time that will not need to be exchanged or returned.

Same for me, sold my Transformer the day the Sammy came out .... my only gripe is the damned typing lag on ANY website. This seems to be a Honeycomb issue because both the ASUS and the Samsung have it. Qualitywise (build) the Sammy is far far better.
However I can also understand why the Apple folks love their iPads. I played with one today at the mall and the scroll speed flipping between screens is untouchable by any android device and the 3rd party hardware available everywhere from Walmart to Brookstone is endless. You'll never see that happen to android because there are just too many incarnations. Problem is I hate "square" screens, they are so 90's. If the iPad had the same widescreen form factor as the Android devices I might have had to make a tough decision.

To me these 5 reasons are well worthy to throw in an extra $100 and give up micro sd slot plus the mini HDMI slot.

I like them both
I own both devices and I love the tab so much that it is hard to put it down. The transformer get little attention now and will probably get sold, but I like it as well.
The colors and brightness on the tab are much better. I keep my brightness at about 30% and it is as bright as the transformer at 70%. Blues on the transformer are a little gray compared. The IPS display is great, but the view angles on the tab are still good.
The weight, thickness and build quality. The edges are smooth and feels nice in the hand. The transformer have sharp edges and tend to hurt after a while and is also a little heavier.
Sound quality is better and overall screen response is better
3.1 is smoother on the tab. I think Asus could have put a little more effort in 3.1 before releasing it. It seem they spent more time in adding the eye candy over performance.
I do like having the HDMI and microSD ports but in relity I never really used anything but the MicroSD slot, so I can live without them. I use online storage for my music file so the extra storage is no big deal. I don't need to keep tons of movies on the device and don't plan on using it as a media server for my home. It will be used to entertain me while away from home.
There a two apps on the transformer that I wished I had on the tab - MyLibrary and (MyCloud that include SplashTop - currently does not work on the tab).
The tab is about 1/2" shorter, but I think Asus added the extra length so that it matches with the dock.
The carmers - I am not planning on using the device to take photos or make movies, so the quality is no big deal for me.

Same for me, sold my Transformer the day the Sammy came out .... my only gripe is the damned typing lag on ANY website. This seems to be a Honeycomb issue because both the ASUS and the Samsung have it. Qualitywise (build) the Sammy is far far better.
However I can also understand why the Apple folks love their iPads. I played with one today at the mall and the scroll speed flipping between screens is untouchable by any android device and the 3rd party hardware available everywhere from Walmart to Brookstone is endless. You'll never see that happen to android because there are just too many incarnations. Problem is I hate "square" screens, they are so 90's. If the iPad had the same widescreen form factor as the Android devices I might have had to make a tough decision.

Switching from the Samsung keyboard to the stock android keyboard fixed alot of the lag. Switching to the dolphin HD browser fixed almost the rest of the lag. An overclocked kernel should take care of the rest.

I have to agree with everyone else here. Returned my Transformer and Dock for the Galaxy Tab. The weight alone sold me. But the camera quality and the display quality sealed it. You will not regret exchanging the Asus for this one.

GT10.1 > Transformer > iPad 2 > Xoom (We all know it).

I returned my Transformer after a little over a week of having it and ordered the Tab 10.1. I have absolutely no regrets at all. The Transformer had light leak issues on 5 places on the screen, 0 with the Tab. The rounded corners on the Tab are much nicer than the sharp squared corners on the Transformer. The tab weighs less, and is thinner which makes it feel much better in the hand. The flash on the camera is nice, and having vibrate functionality is very nice when typing and getting alerts. The overall build quality seems nicer, so I really don't think you would regret returning your Transformer and going with a Tab 10.1.

Second reason, samsung lags on updates!!!!!. I have a captivate, have been running Andromeda3 since samsung doesn't update. Anyway, my screen seems really sensitive, I barely touch the screen and it registers. Yes speakers suck but other than that the transformer is very good, battery life is amazing, dock is nice. I don't have any light leaks either. I was this forum to check out rom dev. Compared to transformer one. One more note. If you want an Ipad get one not a clone

I think that this thread has been tolerated as the development is just now stepping up. However, whether you are joking or not, its comments like yours that just make people mad.
Samsung lags in there updates? This we know. That's why we are here, hovering in the dev section, waiting for these awesome guys to work their magic and unlock the full potential of these devices.
Everyone here is open to comments from helpful users trying to help better the development community and make it a great place to learn and play with our toys. Your comment, and all of its opinions, need to be in the Section market "General" as it does not pertain to the Android development on the SGT10.1 platform.

I have a 10.1v and a friend has a Transformer...
The 10.1v bezel is much slimmer than the Transformer and easily to carry.
It is way lighter too, and it is very significant.
Only plus that the Transformer's screen looks sharper and brighter... at least to me.

I went from the TF to the GT and haven't looked back since. I also sold my iPad and haven missed it since getting the GT.
Basically, what it came down to is... If you already have a laptop or a netbook, get the GT. Otherwise, stick with the TF. Period!

I had two Transformers, each for a couple weeks at a time. Now I've had my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for almost a week.
I think the ASUS Transformer is extremely competitive against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it was an agonizing decision between the two. They have very different strengths and weakness.
What I love about the Transformer is it's low price, the micro SD and mini HDMI ports, and keyboard dock that turns a tablet into a netbook. But the Transformer has very poor speakers and the bezel is extra wide and has corners, the tablet is somewhat uncomfortable in portrait mode.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is super light, great rounded bezel, just absolutely wonderful to hold. PLS display has great colors. But no micro SD, the accessories are very expensive and suck big compared to the ASUS keyboard dock. You'll spend $150 on the Samsung keyboard dock and adapters and still get much less functionality than with the same priced ASUS keyboard dock.
I know I'll need more than 16GB of storage. With the Transformer I was able to spend $400 for the 16GB model and use the 16GB micro SD card I already owned (you can get them on Amazon for $18-25). Lack of micro SD means I had to buy the $600 Galaxy Tab 10.1.
So why did I think the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was worth spending $200 more on? I mostly consume content with my tablet, watch videos, surf the web, read ebooks and mangas. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a pure tablet, it's light and very comfortable and has a great colorful display.
The Transformer is awesome because it can be a netbook. But I decided as cool as that is. I'm not sure Android is really up to the task of really being a laptop or even Windows netbook replacement. I'm not sure I'd see myself actually using that keyboard all that much, as I'd probably rather just get out the laptop instead.
I'm pretty happy with my decision now. Just really hope Samsung is more punctual with it's updates. Because Android 3.x really needs some updating.

I got the 32GB version of the TF. I like ASUS products and have a few of their laptops and have used their motherboards for years. So when the TF came out I got it right away. After playing with it for a few days I noticed how cheaply built it was and the first time I tried to watch a movie in the dark I freaked out! The backlight leakage was crazy bad. I took it back and got another one and it was worse. The backing of the TF was loose and made a creaking sound. The light leakage was worse than the first and the power button failed after 5 days. I took the second one back and got a third. Went to my car and went over it before I left Frys and it had all the same problems. Walked back in and got my money back. ASUS you drooped the ball big time with the TF.
After all that, I got the Galaxy 10.1 and was blown away with the total quality of the thing. Not one issue. Its perfect.
I love this thing and have used it every day.
Good luck to whoever got the TF. Hope yours doesn't have the issues my three different ones had.

I ditched my TF, i can tell you why in one word, Comfort.
I loved my TF, but compared to the Tab it feels bulky and heavy to hold.

transformer or not??

I have a galaxy 10.1 right now but im not very happy wit it its laggy and the plastic back makes my hands sweat for some reason so my friend got a transformer and i fell in love with the tablet im thinking about returning the galaxy for the transformer what do you guys think? anything i should look out for or should i just keep the tab??
any input would be greatly appreciated! and thank button pressed

If your only gripe is the plastic backing, you can just get a case for your Galaxy Tab. The defining feature of the Transformer is its keyboard dock, as otherwise it is functionally the same as every other Honeycomb tablet, just with a cheaper housing. If you don't plan on using the keyboard dock, there isn't much of a reason to switch.

Of course, with the Galaxy tab, you can name your tablet "Andromeda" or "SR830" or something like that.. With the Transformer, you can name your tablet "Optimus Prime" or something.

we should turn "Transformer vs" threads into a drinking game..

Well, I can think of three additional reasons - onboard MicroSD and HDMI ports, and, in addition, Asus seem quite a bit better than Samsung in getting updates out too.
Of course, if none of these matter to you, and/or you don't plan on using the keyboard dock, then I concur there's little reason to switch as the current generation of Honeycomb tablets are all based on the same Nvidia Ventana platform, and thus mostly similar at their cores.

After splashing out £400 on a Asus Transformer, that doubles as a netbook and a tablet, I don't think I could ever splash out £400 on a tablet-only device (or £300 on a tablet-only device for that matter).
The Asus wins hands down. HDMI output, loads of ports and card slots, the dock (obviously), and the prompt updates by Asus are all reasons why the Transformer is a million miles ahead of the Tab.

Well, I don't have the samsung 10, but I own the galaxy 7 and the asus tf101.
IMHO, the galaxy is much better than the asus, but I think I can't compare a cyanamod rom with the stock rom of the asus.
But I was thinking that the asus was much better than this.

Someone posted on the Tab 10.1 forum asking if they'd swap a Tab for a TF, might help you out if you're looking for a swap.

Another consideration is the screen. My understanding is that the GT 10.1 screen is a tiny bit better than the TF screen in terms of brightness and such, but the colors are (like all Samsung devices) a bit over-saturated. If you want more natural colors and a screen that's still outstanding, then the TF is a good choice.

thanks guys ill look for that thread in the tab forum but i got to play with the transformer again last night and surfing the web is more smooth than the tab i dont understand why since they have the same hardware but im leaning more towards the tf... and all the ports is definitely a plus

My samsung fascinate got stuck on android 1.6 , twilight zonish. No more samsung for me.

so i got the transformer this morning... man this thing is great the screen isnt as bright but i feel the colors are a lot more realistic and the feel of the tablet just feels better to me... i got a revision b60 so hopefully i have no problems with it in the long run... now its time to root!
