Can I use the european HD2 in Japan?
They are the same, arent they?!
I ask, because last time I had a UMTS phone with me and I heard only UMTS will work. Data spec doesnt mention UMTS anymore.
Please forgive me my "no no knowlege" in bandwith..
If anything expect GSM will work, I am safe
Didnt look what kind of network it used last time..
Oh come on..
Somebody have to know it
Cant think of the possibility that this question is too hard for xda pros
I have used my HD2 in Tokyo with no problems. It is a quad band on the GSM freq 850/900/1800/1900, but the 3G (HSDPA) is on the 900/2100 freq. 2100 is what Japan and Korea use, and I have used it in both places.

Are all HD2 around the world 900/2100? It seems USA isn't using this band for 3G, or is it?
Do you get HSDPA in Japan?

No, USA doesn't use 900/2100.
See Here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
but there's no way to get JP support or input on HD2
What is the difference between the two and can you make an "a" an "i"?
the differences are the 3g frequencies that they support
i forgot the exact bands but i know that the x10a supports us atnt, rogers canada, and telstra australia 3g bands. the x10i supports asia and european 3g bands
The difference is pronouncation. Also a is the first letter in the alphabet while i is the 9th. I don't think you can make i into a and vice versa.
PS. You can make [email protected] and vice versa but it causes SEUS problems.
x10i and x10a both have the same GSM network frequency as 850/900/1800/1900, or you can call as as Edge network as well. As for the 3G frequency or UMTS bandwidth, here is the difference:
x10i
UMTS: 900/1700/2100 MHz
it will support Asia / Europe / and T-Mobile USA 3G network.
X10a
UMTS: 800/850/1900/2100 MHz
like dorifuto.boi said, it will support AT&T US, Roger Canada, Teltra Australia. It also support Japanese Do-co-mo 3G network as well.
You may wanna check with your current service provider and ask them which UMTS bandwidth they fall into the above category. Again, this is for GSM network only. If you are using Sprint, Verizon, etc they are in differenet as they are in CDMA network.
To further add to your comments
SE uses the a or I for country variants
A - America's (Canada, US & Latin America) Support these bands
I - International (Europe, Asia, Middle east etc) support these bands
thanks for the info. I received and "a" as a gift, but am not able to get on tmobile3g. Only getting edge, but it runs fine.

Bell and Telus have 3G (only) networks in Canada in these bands
By the way... it is technically possible to build a phone that works on all the 3G bands, so that it would not be required an "a" and an "i" version?
the Nokia n8 is like that. 5 band 3g. but the x10 is not

Yes it is - for some weird reason t-mobile was included in the international version, and AT&T was on the American version... But the facts is, that both versions have 2100 MHz 3G which is the most used 3G band worldwide... As I see it, you will just have to go into a secret menu and then check off some other boxes, and then it should be able to use the other 3G bands!
I'll post an image...
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
just because they both have 2100 doesn't mean ATT and t-mobile are using them. personally they should have made 1 model with quad band 3g. better for everyone.

Does anyone know if there will be desire hd 3g compatibable with at&t , rogers or fido , bell , telus ?
i want to know too
No news about it as of now. You can operate the phone on GSM networks in Canada, but you wont have 3G, only Edge.
On the other hand, the Z will be available on Bell, so you never know.
Yes, 3G will work in Canada.
3G 850/2100, 3G 850/1900, 3G 1700

There are some reports like this one around. And considering that the european Desire and Desire HD support the same networks, I wouldn't be so sure. Also, from what I understand not all carriers in Canada support the same network frequencies.
will UK version work with US t-mobile or ATT 3G? EDGE?
Only on Edge.
The 3G bands on the UK version are 900/2100 which will never work in the US.
whats the difference between EDGE and 3G?

Those are the 3G frequencies for T-Mobile US, so maybe Dell is producing only 1 version and that is what Clove expects they will get,and its quite possible the 900/2100 bands will work fine in Europe but that will have to be confirmed.
but UK version would work on both att and t-mobile edge?

The UK version listed previously only had 900/2100 3G bands, that will only give you EDGE on both T-Mobile and at&t.
What about the US version in the UK?

US version should work fine since its 900/1700/2100. It has the base 900/2100 bands.
so US version can work in UK 3g? UK version cannot work with US 3g .

yes. US version has the 900/2100 bands that UK needs.
UK version does not have the 1700, 850 or 1900 bands that US needs.

Well check this site out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
2100 works in: Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone AU, Three Mobile AU), Brazil
900 works in: Europe[1], Asia, Oceania (Optus, Vodafone AU, Vodafone NZ), Dominican Republic (Orange), Venezuela (Digitel GSM)
1700 works in: USA (T-Mobile, Cincinnati Bell Wireless), Canada (WIND Mobile, Mobilicity, Videotron)

I still dont understand. is 1700 and 2100 required for t-mobile or only 1700?
if only one, then clove listed 900/1700/2100 MHz should work.

Naw with T-Mobile you definitely need 1700. Guaranteed. I spent a lot of time googling it.
But oh wow, clove edited the frequencies on their website to 900/1700/2100. That is amazing. I could buy it from them now.
If you guys are in the US what aren't you ordering from Dell? And they have the 16GB too.

I thought it would be cheaper from UK. i still dont know the final price in US yet.
Change Base Band!
If you live outside USA and you are not getting 3G only 2G connections, you need to install a Base Band Switcher.
You can try it, I live also outside US and I installed:
I used China ME722 1.10 @ 850/1900/2100MHz and works perfect for D. R.
There was a guy from Jamaica who also try it and worked perfect.
Download
I tried this method, it does not work ((

Where are you from? The carrier you are using have to use the same frequency at&t uses.
My carrier uses 850 (claro dominicana)!!!
I can use also personal o claro argentina or brazil. This method should work.
I'm from Ukraine.
I was hoping that I can in this way to unlock the band 900/2100
But hardware is only supported 850/1900 right?

The operator works in 2100 range.
But 3g is not availabl for my phone.
I think the range of 2100 all the same is not supported by hardware.
Why else would my phone is not working 3G?
