Ok so I am getting 2 HTC EVO's from a buddy of mine, Im going to be putting them on metropcs for my girlfirend and myself. Im going to do the flash by following the guides I found below;
1. Go to metro store and have them do a port for $30 (unless somone know a cheaper way to get my ESN added to metro's database)
1.5 Update Phone to 2.2 Froyo (if its not already, im not sure what android version is on these yet)
2. Root Phone and Unlock nand by using the method in this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsoVzMadiQE
3. Get all the goodies working, by following this page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796257
Now this is where my questions comes in. First, Does anyone see a problem with my choice of guides? If followed properly should everything above work just fine? Second, I want to flash the custom rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795182
What are all the different downloads for? Are they differet builds or are they things that need to be installed on the phone after the flash? is there maybe a link to a guide on the rom itself?
And if I do flash a different rom, will all of the above settings still stick? SO is it literally 1. Install rom from SD 2. Boot rom and wait 3. Have fun? I wont need to "redo" anything after flashing?
Hope someone will lend me a hand here. Im not new to flashing phones, but I am new to flashing smart phones, For the most part the seems pretty straight forward.
Also I have the $40 MetroPCS Talk,Text,Web Plan, I do not live in a evdo market so I do not have 3G access, I will be using 1x and thats fine with me. However, do I need to upgrade my plan to beable to make this work? If yes then which plan would work best? if I dont "need" to upgrade, would there be any benifeit in doing so?
Ok I think thats it for my questions...Now I just cant wait to get the phones, he'll hopefully ship them on saturday.
try many roms and see what works best

I found a List of different roms, but do I need to use roms specific for MetroPCS or can I safely use any rom and everything should work?
Also is it safe to flash multiple roms? is it fixable if you get a bad flash?

That's an interesting question. I'm pretty new to flashing myself, but have been doing a lot of reading here and now have flashed 3 different ROMs. As far as the MetroPCS thing, someone else will have to answer that one. I only think of the EVO on Sprint. Can't think of a reason why any of the ROMs wouldn't work, other than Sprint specific apps, but don't know for sure.
As far as flashing multiple ROMs, from what I gather you can flash as many as you want. Of course you can only have one running at a time, but as long as you do your wipes between flashes, you should be good to go. If I'm wrong about this, somebody please let me know.

Your correct, but I thought the roms are specific to the carrier, look at the evo rom for cricket.

Ok so ill start looking around for MetroPCS specific roms. Does anyone know a good place to start looking?
as far as using sprint, I though about it, I also thought about porting to boost because with boost i could still get 3g, where with metro ill only get 1x. However Neither Sprint nor Boost have service within about 5mi of my apartment. Not only that but MetroPCS has actually been good to me for the past 2years.
Ok I found the Rom im looking for, but maybe im just slow, but IDK how to install it...

I want it with CM7, how do I accomplish this?
I recommend ACS or any EvoKings roms. Sick as hell and functional

okay so here is the question i have just bought a sprint htc hero i am going to flash it to metro pcs service... my question is this does anyone know if i flash it to metro pcs would me changing the roms as often as i do with my mt3g affect the flash of the service??? the reason i ask is becuse i work for metro and i know with the samsung instinct or even blackberrys if you upgrade the os after you have flashed the service you lose the flash.... understand?
I could be wrong on this but I dont belive it will affect it. With the BB and instinct if you change the OS you are actually UPGRADING the OS ie. 4.3 to 4.5. but when flashing a rom onto a hero you are not so much upgrading the OS as much as changing and tweaking it a bit.
Once again I could be wrong but thats what I think to be the case.
unless of course we get a fully working 2.1 going then the situation could be different.
thanks for your input
actully that does make sense but then agin when we flash our roms we do full wipes and alot of files and things that make the phone tick change well not change but they are reset everytime are they not? meanin that w.e i do has to be done agin in theroy being that i wiped the phone? and another question while im acting as a noob lol witch roms work with the cdma hero the same ones as the other hero phones? or only the two i saw in this section of the forum?

I am not a cell phone genius by any means, but I am pretty sure the way you move the Hero to another carrier is to change the PRL. Flashing our roms does not mess with the PRL as far as I know.

as they said DO NOT FLASH GSM ROMS!!
if you do you will brick your phone. for CDMA you have several different options. just check out the stickie wki at the top. also I forgot that Kcarpenter was right I belive you just change the PRL even if that is not the case, when you do a data wipe you are not reflasing back to stock all it does is erase all the user settings. anthing that is in the codeing for the phone remains.
edit: BTW the only roms you have to do a wipe with are the AOSP 1.6 the 2.1 v1.8-7 and the AOSP 2.0.1 the others should just flash over stock without any issues. I personally use Fresh 1.1 with the modaco kernel (love the setup very fast) links for all are in my sig also check out "Noj lockscreen" in my sig for some cool add ons.
okay okay

I have a CDMA Hero running fresh rom 2.4.0 by flipz. I am trying to put it back to stock cause i would like to sell it and get a EVO. When I go to put the stock 2.1 on there it says the phone is not connected to the computer. But I can charge and do everything else. But it will not put stock sprint 2.1 back on there. Can anyone offer any help.

I am PARANOID about updating my radio and pri, wimax etc because I CANNOT mess up my phone. However I don't want to be "left in the dust" especially considering that alot of roms advocate that all radios need to be updated.
How can I update in a way that wont mess anything up?
Is the safest way to update the radios by flashing the Sprint Lovers full package in the bootloader? If i do this will I be exempt from the side-affects that some people have had from updating (like 100% wake time, etc). Basically is flashing Sprint Lovers in the bootloader the safest and foolproof way ?
Thanks in advanced
Make a nand using one of the two latest recoveries.(clockworkmod or ra)
After that's done, flash calkulins combo.

Yes but alot of poeple bork up their evos by doing it that way.
My question is if I do it through the bootloader with SprintLovers am I pretty much guaranteed that nothing will go wrong?

I've used RA and flashed the combo. If someone screws up their EVO then they are not knowledgeable enough to do it. Find someone through the board and that lives near you and get their help. That's what I did and learn everything I needed to know in 5 minutes.

right. i recommend ra recovery. follow what i said in the post above and all will be fine. flashing the sprint lovers wont hurt though. just more time consuming.
I just installed the latest cm nightly on my new ns4g unfortunately it doesn't support cdma radios yet, like an uber noob I was so excited to flash cm I forgot to backup first. I need a stock image to get my phone working again.
/facepalm
I thought 2.3.4 had cdma and 4g built in. Have you tried one of those roms?
Try a rom built from source of 2.3.4. Cm just barely started to merge 2.3.4 in.
Or the problem is he doesn't have the correct kernel from what I understand.

The 2.3.4 kernel has wimax code in it. Whether that extends to full rom support I'm not sure.

im sorry but i dont feel one shred of pity for you. if your willing to take the plunge on testing things out before the phone comes out, then you should have at least made a backup of the stock files.. if you didnt know how to then you coulda asked.. or hell at the very least after flashing CWM made a nandroid

Actually a nandroid wouldn't have helped him, because his problem is that a rom he flashed was bundled with a gsm radio image. It's the cdma radio image he needs.
I'm not asking for you to feel bad or pity me. I messed up i'll take all the blame. yes i should have backed up to start off i knew i should have i was just too excided. i was a 8 year old on christmas morning with my new toy
I know there are people out there that can help me and i'm hoping by asking i can get that help. you can't blame me for that, if i dont ask i'm stuck here for days without a working phone. if i ask there's a chance i can get my phone working in a matter of hours, if the right person hears me.
no i agree there are people. what rom would bundle a gsm radio?
anyways if some one is willing to help all they need to do is just root, and dd the modem partition, they can upload it and then you can flash it. worst case im in EST and my sprint store opens at 10 am.. ill be making a total system dump when i get home. if you still need it by then you can download it.

hey my play comes in the 3erd and i will like to know is there any working ICS roms for it and how to go about doing every thing i need to. i use to have the lg ally running velocity v1.2 but by the looks of it with my new play i have flashing roms and recover look way harder then the ally was so i need some info guys and a guide and what roms are save to flash and what recovery do i need to have also and thanks for you help also!!!
I havent seen any ICS roms for the r800x but recovering/flashing roms is made very very easy with this from the android market "Xperia CWM Auto-Instaler"
You don't even need to unlock the bootloader, just needs to be rooted and then go about setting up the Xperia CWM Auto-Instaler and just make a nandroid backup. I would reccommend using Cola's rom or IT-ROM (which is based off of Cola's rom) for the r800x, they both have worked perfectly for me and I'm currently running IT-ROM which definitely makes the r800x run much smoother/faster.
Wifi, 3g, sms, ect all worked without any issues, and if you're somone who is worried about being able to overclock, I know someone is working on that with Cola's rom, but I dont think it's finished yet. But, those roms take care of basically any speed issues one may have with their r800x, it definitely did the trick for me.
Good luck

ya i know that as i have done all of this with the ally but what i dont know is with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14815942&postcount=4 do i root and then flash the recover and then install the rom because i know the recovery does not work with stock and thats what i will be on or do i install the rom and then the recovery if i have more info on this then im good
How are planning on installing the ROM without recovery? Seriously, read everything again so you don't brick your phone.
And make sure you're installing a ROM for locked bootloaders.... If you try to install that CM7 ROM it'll likely never boot again.

ok i looked up some info and i can not unlock my bootloader on the R800x i am so happy i did not try and flash the CM7 lol
you can unlock your boot loader it just cost $$ , someone with setool , a paper clip and not minding voiding your warrantee. I would not suggest it until you've gotten a bit experience under your belt but when you get there its worth having done in my opinion , many people vary on this subject and they're right also.
There is limited real benefit to unlocking the R800x, since the devs have been focusing on the locked ROMs... Not much out there, unless you're planning to develop it yourself.

There should be a modem somewhere you can request it from your fellow AT&T users. Just flash the zip or tar file then that should fix it

This is exactly why im hesitant to flash anything not for my specific carrier.
Yea i was testing to see if i cld. Did a nandroid and everything but installing that tmo rom overwrote my modem.bin file. So im waiting on someone to pull the modem.bin off of thier att device so i can get it back.
I would be hesitant to flash anything at this point. Lots of things are unstable, and it's not worth ruining a superb phone.

cld u do me a favor and run this real quick. it will pull ur modem.bin file i need. (if you're rooted)
In terminal emulator (or adb shell in cmd window)
su
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 of=/sdcard/modem.bin bs=4096
Pulls modem.bin
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13 of=/sdcard/amss.bin bs=4096
Pulls amss.bin (if that doesn't work its 0p12 but I'm pretty sure it's 13)
They'll be dumped to your sdcard.

Yes because xda hasn't had others brick their phones before installing roms they know little about, nor took the time to ask the simple question in the thread before flashing. For those people we should squash the idea of an improved and broader development group between multiple carriers.
Sorry if this seems aimed more at you, but in general I'm getting frustrated with this response. Developers should not have to worry about experimental test people run on their phones and should not be limited to a specific carrier just because the modem is different as far as development goes. If people don't understand what they are doing with their expensive devices they should not be flashing or messing with them at all and stick with stock or what they really feel comfortable doing AFTER an appropriate amount of reading and asking questions.
Theoretically, all of our roms will be interchangeable. Minus the radio. Your problem seems repairable. I can look at it tomorrow if you want.

Worst case scenario shouldnt he be able to flash stock rom through odin and get stock radio back? He would only have to re-root again.

I think that was the point in my comment. Being one of those developers you speak of
Its only going to be confusing though in the beginning until we figure out what to put in and leave out. I would imagine that eventually roms will be 1 size fits all. Just give it time.
I don't know if this will work, but it's worth a try, and I'd really like to know what this feature really does.
